My quest to find the best mini cupcakes in the city continues. As of this weekend Kara's was the front runner. But after today, it stands no chance- move over Kara's, Delessio takes the (cup) cake. This place does mini cupcakes right. Their flavors are so creative- think chocolate brownie filled with mocha mousse and topped with cinnamon meringue...or banana with buttercream hazelnut filling and chocolate meringue. I can't even remember the other flavors they had but I wanted to buy them all! It leaves me wanting to come back, and indeed I will. Not only to continue to enjoy mini cupcakes, but also to sample their gorgeous and decadent chocolate tower cakes, which were calling out to me from under the counter below the mini cupcake assortments. These beauties are artwork. Yes, food can be art, and Delessio's cakes deserve a place at the Louvre.

Great food for a great price!

Had lunch with the girlfriend here and I was a bit hesitant at first. I never thought a cafeteria style bakery would be so good.

I ordered the chicken which was a bit bland and dry, but the mac n cheese was very good.  The girlfriend got some type of braised beef in a coconut peanut sauce which was really good.

For dessert she had a mint cookie which she savored in small bites until the very end and I had chocolate with macadamia nuts.

The food was great and price was decent.  I love a place where you can choose the portion of what you want and offers a great variety of food.

When I first moved to SF, I lived on Pearl Street and I would stop here all the time for coffee on the way to my horrible job.

Now that I'm more established, and even though I've moved out of the neighborhood, I still come back.

Great coffee and sweets.  Love the mini cupcakes even if a bit pricey.  Sometimes you don't *want* a whole cupcake right after zazen at the zen center on Saturday mornings, right?

But somehow you *DO* have room for a gourmet egg mcmuffin that you have to pry out of a big skillet in which it was baked with 7 of its brothers.  And you *DO* want some frittata, and egg scramble, and breakfast potatoes, and some heavenly concoction of an egg baked over greens in a skillet with cheese all over it.

And you *DEFINITELY* want BANANA BREAD FRENCH TOAST.

I think the price for this hot breakfast bar is expensive, but not prohibitive and actually....?  Totally worth it, y'all.  This is what I want my breakfast to be when I'm at home but I haven't had time or energy to create it for myself.

We came to Delessio for their hot food buffet, but came out in love with their baked goods.  My sister had wanted to eat here for a while now and so it was with some excitement that we made our way down Market and into the comfortably snug Delessio.

Once you enter, you're greeted with the irresistible scent of freshly made food- on our visit, the buffet table featured mac n' cheese, Cuban roast pork, rotisserie chicken, a potato casserole, Sichuan eggplant, and a few other dishes.  The mac n' cheese was sublimely cheesy and it was my favorite dish here.  The roast pork was tasty, though a little dry, while the chicken was decent- I wish the skin had been a little crisper.

You can get pretty carried away with how much food you're piling onto your plate, especially when they put down a new dish of mac n' cheese, so try to control your portions.  My sister and I ended up with a little over a pound of food each, which was more than plenty for the two of us for lunch.

We didn't have much room for dessert, but we had to check out their cakes and pastries anyway.  They had the most darling mini cupcakes- I got the red velvet, peanut butter, and orange creamiscle flavors.  I also couldn't resist getting some of their cookies, as well as a slice of their cake du jour- a well-spiced carrot cake with a layer of ginger cream cheese in the center.  The cupcakes were delicious- the cake was a little dry, but I did like their frosting, which was very smooth, not too sweet, and definitely not too buttery.  The cookies were okay- I liked the lemon one best.  The cake was good, but the ginger cream cheese had a little too much ginger in it.

Overall, Delessio made some wonderful food.  The items at the self-serve buffet were of a really good quality and some of the panini sandwiches (Cuban pork!) sound really good.  And they make some damn good mini-cupcakes!  I'd come back to try more of their cakes- the lemon cheesecake looks delish!

Best mini-cupcakes in the City.  And at $1.75 a pop, it's really a bargain, considering how much effort they put into the icing and other nice touches on top of each.   I can't vouch for anything else here because I couldn't pass those cupcakes every time I walked into the place.

For that last one star, I'd like to see a "low-fat" or "non-fat" cupcake option so that I can have a dozen of those, instead of two or three, with my coffee.

I want to love this place, because in theory I do.  In actuality, I despise it because:

1) I got the most rotten food poisoning of my entire life from their (dare I say overpriced) salad bar. To this day when I think about DeLessio my stomach churns & knots.  Over the course of the extremely violent cleansing of my entire digestive tract I regretted ever stepping foot inside.

2) The three times I ate there multiple items were mislabeled "Gluten-Free"  which I pointed out to the workers and they would switch out the food labels. But, really? Polenta with HUGE CHUNKS OF BREAD cooked into it HAS wheat in it.

If you have bleeding ankles as a result of trying to ambitiously walk home in a not-quite-broken-in pair of Doc Martens and you have no moleskin and no cabs will stop for you and you're about to go apeshit 'cause your feet are practically severed from your body, this is the place that will go out of their way to find you a friggin' Band Aid so you can actually manage to limp the 4 blocks home and tend to your wounds...

I started getting my Depth Charges from this place in the morning as a result of their employees' awesomeness.

Thank you!

While Delessio's is often busy (for good reason) the service is always fast. whether you're looking for a quick fix (double latte + vanilla creme brioche) or you wanna eat in/ take away a proper meal (fresh hot /cold food bars + yummy panini) ...your search is over.

plus of course they are the perfect place to turn to when you need dessert for a special party (crazy insane chocolate cake) or for your special self (mini cupcakes). on many levels, delessio's is divinely delish.

Delessio makes really amazing cakes! Any other bakery or shop that claims to sell cakes is a fraud.  Delessio makes real cakes and everything else is garbage.  I wasted the first 25 years of my life looking for really rich, tasty beautiful cakes.  Then I found Delessio.  Seriously. Hot!!

The secret to Delessio is its desserts. The Rabanada (Brazilian French Toast) gets me every time. I hesitate to tell you Yelpers because it's a hard item to come by (and I want to save it for myself). The other food at Delessio reminds me of a high class cafeteria: sandwiches as pre-packed and food is served buffet style, which is perfect for people in a hurry or a starving hipster after a crazy night out. If you're in the neighborhood, give it a try. Warning: parking can be tough.

I am not one to repeat things that often, especially when I live in a city full of new things to see and new places to explore.  While I have favorites, I am always up for trying something new, for having an adventure.

Delessio offers me the best of both worlds: it is new every time, so it is an adventure, and yet it is amazing every time, so it qualifies as a place I love to go back to.

As a brunch place, in particular, it rocks.  Start with the fact that if you are tired/hungover/hungry, there is no standing in line to be seated, nor any of this nonsense about placing an order and waiting for it to be brought to you.  Then, add on the fact there are two long buffets laden with all kinds of unique and innovating goodness: polenta with tomato jam, yes! Eggs with creamed leeks, ole!  So, when you go to Delessio, you're not going to get the fabulous French toast you had last time because it may be there, or it may be replaced by something else totally amazing.

Unlike every other buffet based place I've ever been to, Delessio labels what is in each of the items, so if you are a vegan, or have a dairy or wheat allergy, you won't have to guess.

You pay by weight, and can also pick up any number of coffee beverages, so the whole thing, from walking in the door to getting to your food (or coffee, whichever is more critical), takes 5 minutes.

There are small tables inside, and if it is a nice day, a small patio looking out at the excitement (?!) of Market St.  Apparently you can't leave your food unattended outside because there are pigeons waiting for you to turn your back before they dive bomb and steal your food.  It isn't a "quaint" patio full of flowering wheelbarrows, but a comfortable place to eat in the uniquely flavored downtown SF air.

I've heard Delessio does amazing things with dessert, but I'll have to report back on that.  Can't mix dessert food with brunch food, you know?

Five stars for Delessio being the brunch adventure I want to have over and over again.

A solid 4 stars.  The best place to eat in the Market/Van Ness area.  It's convenient for lunch and brunch, you get to eat a great variety of good food, including well prepared vegetables.  The pork adobo is really tasty when they have it.  On my brunch visit this past Sunday, the hot food on the buffet was a little less fresh than usual -- maybe a timing issue.  But overall, it's consistent and pleasurable, a way to make lunch on a workday feel a little bit special, like a real break.  Great coffee, good pastries, incredible bubble wrap chocolate, outdoor seating, genuinely nice service.

The sign that asks me to clean up after myself to help keep the place looking nice sticks in my craw a bit after paying $13 for a sandwich and a soda.

And the Cuban sandwich I had at Arlequin's was better, I have to say.

First the bad catering job at my office party, now this.  Quo vadis, DeLessio?

I am with Grace P., I am utterly flabbergasted that I have never heard of this place.  A friend brought over the most decadent chocolate cake for a dinner party.  It was hands down the best chocolate cake I have ever tasted.

It was the richest towering specimen of chocolate goodness that has ever graced this household.  I was impressed that it wasn't too sickly sweet or over-chocolaty.  The cake itself was delicate and rich at the same time.  I'm not exactly sure what the name was, it was shaped in a big slice and had chocolate spires....I think it was chocolate sour cream cake.  I can't wait to go there in person and see what other goodies they have cookin'.

Hungry? Short on time? Not sure what you want to eat? This is the place for you! Delissio next to 'the flax' is good stuff. You just load up your plate with salad, warm comforting thai chicken, and various other hot dishes, get it weighed, and voila - you are done! I love the bubble wrap, chocolate that is filled with peanut butter or other flavors, that, yes, looks just like bubble wrap.

The other great thing about Delissio are their baked good. They have an insane German Chocolate Cake that will make you rethink that old classic dessert. Its the best damn cake I've ever had and I hate cake.

Its not a 'cheap' salad bar, but its worth the trip. I like the one on Market St. better than the one on Oak/Broderick.

If I could afford to eat a $12 salad here every day, I might just do it.
The salad bar is great....but pricey.
I don't recommend most of the hot food, its usually pretty cold by 1:30 or 2:00, when I get to lunch...but it might be good earlier, I just couldn't say. Its usually overcooked but tasty and different.
Once again, you need deep pockets to frequent this place.

I used to think this was a neighborhood gem. Now it's just plain icky and expensive. I went there with a group on a Saturday and everything felt dirty and the food looked like it had been out too long.  There seemed to be many employees around but nothing seemed to be flowing. It's off the list. Hey guys, a good spring cleaning should be on your to do list.

This place is great for 2-3 hungover buddies on a lazy weekend looking for that first good meal of the day and you've missed breakfast. You can fill up on their homemade hot food, sold by the pound, which is better than most of the food you can make at home. You can't go wrong here, you'll be full and out of pocket 9-12 bucks.

Or you take one from the pages of the duder and order the cuban pulled pork sandwich. Ladies, be careful, you may want to split this one with a friend cause its heavy. Duders, this one is solid. Quality ham, slow roasted pork, quality cheese, pickles, all on a french roll that they heat up in one of those panini cooking george foreman looking contraptions. You won't be disappointed, unless, which happened only once, some rook is workin the sandwich zone and doesn't heat up your sando enough. Throw in an orangina and feel that hangover go away as you sit outside in the sun and recap the night before. You're out 8-12 bucks here as well.

Apparently the sweets here are top notch too, can't rep to those, don't like the sweets. Also, I haven't been in the drinking mood at this place yet, but the wine is 10-15 bottles per, which is cheap for an eatery. A duder favorite.

Unique, easy, and mostly good food.

Love the setting, the concept and the people.

The sweats are always out of the park, and the buffet, is often great.

Downside, its a buffet so sometimes it can be cold.

It also has been inconsistent at times.  But, lately on the up-tic, and recently changed their coffee for the better.

Great lunch place on a sunny day, or with visitors.

Picks, well, if they have the coconut brisket, get it!

During my brief stint in law school (one whole year!), I swear I was here almost everyday.  I have tried just about everything in this place and I must say that their tres leche cupcakes, thai chicken, and hot chocolate are the best! Just about all of their desserts were good as well as their coffee drinks. I really miss being within walking distance of this place....

5 words extended to six just to stress the importance:

"red snapper po boy sand- wich!!"  wow.

don't let the loud red and yellow scare you from entering delessio. today i had the most expencive and tasty po boy sandwich i've ever had. who thought po boys even come with red snapper grilled in a panini press? doesn't matter cause it's delessious!

this place has pretty tempting food served buffet style and sold by the pound ($8.75/lb). be careful and you could end up grabbing a $20.00 lunch with no drinks! i did!

i have since learned, and focus my efforts on the sandwiches made for the frugal food lovers. i can't say the red snapper po boy will be there tomorrow as the menu changes from what i can tell. but the quality doesn't seem to deviate too much.

as my co worker would say "that was yummers!".

Best cupcakes!! I'd never imagine that there's a wonderland in a tiny cupcake!! I've tried almost every flavors and I loved all of them. I used to think cupcakes are just the most disgusting things in the world besides the sponge cake with sugary icing from my college cafeteria. Even when I went to high end bakeries, I never got it just because the size is too big to have a try. But these little cuties are just the right size. It is a heavenly sin, but it's small enough that it doesn't take long to persuade yourself that it's OK to indulge. The bread pudding was very good too, very similar to the bread pudding from Tartine. Once I went there and got inspired by the eggnog bread pudding so I went home and made my own. Delish...

Never tried anything from the deli, but they look pretty nice to me.

This place is awesome. My buddy Meelan and I tride this place on our 2.9 mile walk home (for her) and my 5.5 mile walk home.
This was supposed to be an exercise excursion, but we both wanted dinner after work on our walk home.

So we ended up here.

They make a mean mocha. Everyone is correct about the tres leches.

Its extremely moist, tender, sweet, flavorful and one of their best desserts. She and I shared this one.

They also have a (pay by the pound buffet). The time we went, they had falling of the bone roasted chicken with wonderful spices,  frittata with roasted red peppers, grilled vegetables, sliced pork tenderloin, and a separate area for cold salads, soups and pork chile verde.

This place is wonderful because everything is freshly prepared, buffet style, and they have an assortment of chocolates, cakes, and cookies.

This is a place to have a nice lunch and dessert with a good friend and a cup of their nonfat mocha.

After hearing so many great things about Delessio from my fellow Yelpers, I had high expectations when I arrived earlier today for lunch. Too high, as it turned out.

To be fair, I didn't try the cupcakes or their sandwiches, and those could be what makes this bakery tick. I instead made myself a plate of the buffet-style pay-per-pound food. It looked reasonably tasty, but had all the flavor and excitement of a luncheon at an accounting conference. Bugger. Ok, I thought, I'll try the sweets. I tried the brownie. Too powdery, dry, and not enough flavor.

I'll update this again after I try the cupcakes and sandwiches. 3 stars for average.

This place will knock your socks off. The desserts are over the top and super creative, and the salad and lunch bar is a great option for a day when you want to have a wholesome and diverse plate of delessio-so food. They even have quinoa, for those of us who adore this protein-packed grain...

Dig it, a good spot for a healthy lunch finished with a rich, deletable sweet fresh from their bakery. And yes, they are frequently baking, so the place will fill with the aroma of chocolate cake or cinnamony caramelness. Mmmmm...

Why had I never heard of this place? If I were to forget about it, that would be good and bad. Good so being that then I could not crave their deleciousness - it is potent. It is enveloping. It is imaginativity and a culinary genius in tangible form. Bad because then I would not know the total pleasure of their goods.
Cast iron pans covet the food and insulate it so that you can pick & choose your own, and it won't get dried out and limp. Expert sandwich engineers compile scrumptious works of art and all the while you get to look at their fantastic baked goods. The only problem is deciding which. Which of these is going to get in my belly? I suggest the sweet potato bread pudding and without a doubt the banana tart. This sucker has almost a shortbread crust, a layer of ganache, chocolate pudding, butterscotch, bananas, crunchy peanuts all in a blanket of the absolute finest, and I mean finest meringue that ever there was.
Bread pudding is gorgeous with caramelized sweet potato on top of brioche & croissant soaked in vanilla flan custard.
Don't miss the eggplant panini. Don't pass by the maple yams. Don't leave the polenta in that skillet, don't even leave the meatloaf. It is all of it the best of the best. I am fully impressed.
There's a mattress shop next door. Are you thinking what I'm thinking?

He said I've a smile that sneaks up. Sort of a smirk at first.

He made that mistake: then I wouldn't smile at all.

"You're being too calculated," he said.

Who says stuff like that? So I laughed. Which made it worse, I tried not to pull my lips so tight-- seem as serious, as I thought I could.

"See, there you are. Open, and very pretty today." He bought us cake.

Underneath umbrellaed awnings at the bakery.

Aren't those the cutest little cupcakes ever? Yes they are.. and they also taste as good as they look. You don't have to feel bad for eating it since it's a two bite kinda cake.. Moderation is the key..  They have all these other good looking baked goods that I will go back to try. If dessert is not what you want, they also have a sandwiches and salads. If you have a party, they do catering too!

Can they try and pack anything else into the space? Great selection- hit or miss quaity. The baked goods always look scrumptous. There is often a line and at peek hours can be challenging to sit or get warm food if you picked it off the buffet bar but waited in line 10 minutes to pay. Better than Cafe Trieste which is just across the street.

Yummy! Pricey,  but worth it. We enjoyed the chocolate triangle cake for Dave's birthday last night.

Thanks to my co-worker for introducing me to cupcakes at Delessio! The mint chocolate ones were like biting into a decadent chocolate brownie topped with mojito whipped cream. I still have to try the rest of my birthday assortment -- banana with ginger and pistachio because there were no more hazelnut ones left for me but I guess that means I'll just have to visit the bakery in person! Check out my posted pix of the mini cupcakes...

OMG!!! They have THE BEST cupcakes around!  The combination of flavors are unreal and just tasty as hell!  As far as the buffet items, some are hit and miss but that is usually the case.  Not everything can stand on heated tables (i.e. mac n cheese always looks on the oily side).  But oh dear!! Those pastries are unbelievable and the prices on the full scrumptous cakes are pretty reasonable!  Go here!

I love the pastry here!!!  It's different and delicious.

Apple strudel muffin - muffin top has the slightly crunchy and sweet strudel texture combined with the most inside of the muffin created a great balance.  The muffin wasn't greasy like some muffins you get.

Brazilian french toast - an awesome way to each french toast on the go without having to use syrup.  The cinnamon sugar coated french toast had a great balance of overall sweetness and flavor, good moisture inside, and a good, slight crunch outside.

Ginger pear muffin - light and not overly sweet, great balance of ginger taste so that it's not overwhelming.  Again, it doesn't taste greasy.

Warm turkey & cranberry sandwich - made to order made with real roast turkey (not processed meat).  It was good.

Service is friendly.  They have a great selection of other pastries that I will definitely go back and try.  They had a great selection of mini bitesize cupcakes which looks delicious and unique, which I will try another time.

What I like is that their pastries aren't super sized and it's about the quality, not quantity.    There's a certain point of goodness you can have before it feels gluttonous, if you know what I mean...  Don't forget to order a cup of coffee w/you pastry.  Their coffee is pretty good too.

I would agree with some of the other comments that their food is a little pricey.  But for good pastry, I think $2 or $3 is reasonable.  Their self service salad bar and hot food is definitely a bit pricey though.  The sandwich is still within reasonable price.

Someday I will eat something at this bakery BESIDES their fabulous Tres Leches Cake....but, thus far, the lure of that exotic, Latin American delicacy, laden in calories, butter, and three kinds of milk - evaporated milk, sweetened condensed milk, and whole milk or heavy cream - with just a touch of rum - is enough to suit me.  I can pass up all the other heavenly tidbits and savories and turn up my nose, knowing what awaits me in the sanctuary of my own home or, woefully, wherever I may be having to share my haul with friends or colleagues.  The toasted meringue on top hides the luxurious goodness underneath.  I hope I live long enough to eat fifty more....even thinking about it adds pounds, heck...it's the treadmill for me tonight...I'll have to keep running till dawn....ah, tres leches....

Yum-mo.

Not every place will inspire me to use Rachael Ray quotes, but seriously.  This place is THE BOMB.

And not every place inspires me to use a 7th grade terminology like "THE BOMB,"  but this place rocked my socks off.

We had a brunch that blew my mind.  It was humongous plates of warm egg-y food and a multitude of side dishes, including beets, noodle salads, roasted potatoes, fresh tomatoes in season, roast chicken, french toast, fluffy fritattas, vegetable medleys, mixed seasonal fruits...the list literally goes beyond the scope of my memory.  Whoa nelly.

I believe the "by the pound" price was $8.75, which is not Souper Salad in the mall cheap...but what you get is far worth it.

Just don't try to eat it all.  I did, and had there not been some sort of physical incapability to eat five pounds of food, I'd be a scene from a Monty Python movie right about  now.  I actually managed to gross myself out a tad.

My husband ate the Cuban sandwich, but lost his appetite watching me eat like Shamu.  And yet, we're still married.  Now that's love, people.
