Great style! I loved this place. The environment was very nice, and so was the coffee. The Tres Leches cake was good - but it wasn't the best I've ever had - I like mine a little more milky/wet and less creamy/thick.
Great place though - nice service, too.
Ordered food here for an office party for 25 people not too long ago. A little pricey but very tasty food. I ordered their salad, chicken, ribs, salmon, cookies and their veggie sandwich. They were a big help in planning the menu and making sure we had the right amount and mix of food for everyone.
Picking up the food was a little more hectic. Street parking and luckily I found parking nearby. They were trying to pull everything together at the last minute while I was trying to get everything load into the car without missing anything.
At the end, everyone loved the food!!!!
Cuban sandwich - awesome. Could be a bit larger, but w/e. I haven't had such a good Cuban since my days in Cambridge, MA, where Chez Henri's Cuban is still #1 for me.
Muffaletta - good stuff. Tasty bread, fresh meats, and a nice slab or olives. One of the best I've had.
And damn - the vanilla brioche was off the charts! Add perfect pastry exterior, glaze with just enough sugar like a light donut, and then follow up with a vanilla custard filling. What a great finish to an already great lunch.
The rest of what they have? All looked A-MAZING. I can't wait to return for the rest!
I've been to Delessio Market & Bakery 2 times now; both times I enjoyed the variety of dishes and desserts. Both visits ended up with me running to the nearest bathroom. The first time I ate here I thought, no it can't be Delessio. The second visit proved that it wasn't a fluke.
Delessio is a little on the pricey side for lunch, and its pay by the pound. I recommend buying a sandwich and staying away from the buffet unless you have an iron stomach.
The food was yummy, though not as low-fat as you would imagine. You have a buffet of choices to choose from, and then you weigh your plate to pay.
Good options for vegetarians and choco-heads! So many bakery items.
My bf and I used to come here all the time and still would be if it wasn't so expensive. Keep in mind though that all the food is organic and made with love...oh and VERY delicious. I can't help but splurge on delicious goods such as mac 'n cheese, creamy veggies, salad, chcocalate, tarts it goes on. If I continued to go here as much as I want to me wallet would shrink and my belly would grow! So now I limit myself to once (or twice) a month.
The location on MArket is my favorite, but I live closer to the one on Broderick. For some reason the food here taste better. Both locations have a lot of selection, but the other location seems to run out of food quicker.
Be sure to grab dessert for after dinner, or better yet get a cake for yours or someone's B-day. You will be coming back for more!
This review is for the catering aspect only.
I ordered a week in advance, deli platter, medium salad basket, 2 german chocolate cakes. ALL were amazing.
The quality of the meat on the deli platter was outstanding, niman ranch roast beef, diestel turkey, and bocalone salami, I didnt have the ham, no one in the group wanted ham. They had no problem adding more of the other meats.
I am still dreaming of the german chocolate cake. Thankfully they also sell it by the slice, will be back!
Customer service was excellent.
Only problem, its not cheap, but I knew that before selecting them.
I've been coming here for a while and always like it, though either I'm getting there later, or they have more "brunch" type entrees nowadays. Either way, the food is great, and I love the concept of just loading up and paying by the pound. Kind of like some places I've been to in NYC.
Their cakes are also great, the service is always friendly. Solid place to get a quick and awesome bite.
When I first moved to San Francisco, I'd gotten a job in a SoMa office not far from Delessio. Once I'd discovered the Tres Leches cake, Delessio quickly became an after-work tradition for me and some co-workers. We'd come in to share a square of that fabulous dessert, accompanied by a glass or two of white wine and sit outside watching Market Street in all it's bizarre glory.
Delessio gets big ups for serving dishes with a lot of organic ingredients. Their menu is diverse and creative, and their desserts and baked goods are high-quality. You taste it, and you'll want to go back. This is the sort of place you take your out-of-town foodie friends when they visit (I've done this several times and more than once, said friend comes back and says "can we go to that fancy deli on Market again?").
While talking on the cell and walking down Market the other day, I noticed I was being trailed by a stumbling, mumbling figure who was casting furtive glances my way. In an effort to dodge this fellow, the kind you might often find on that stretch of Market St., I ducked inside Delessio. I had no clue what it was, but was immediately taken by its bright, colorful interior, chalkboard surfacing scrawled with daily specials, towering cakes, homemade pastries, industrial-chic espresso machine, and the like. Most impressive, though are the buffets of organic and sustainable entrees, salads, and appetizers that gives Whole Foods a serious run for its money.
I chose a hearty pasta dish that was coated just so in an artichoke cream sauce with tiny grape tomatoes. I added a nice little piece of eggplant parmesan to the top (soft with a bit of crispy breading to the outside and cooked in a savory tomato sauce), grabbed a salad with feta and olives, and a tiny bottle of Pelegrino. All in all it was about $14.50 to go, which seemed a little pricey, but the quality of the food was spot on so I found it hard to complain.
I'd love to come here for brunch or just to linger with a coffee -- maybe next time when I'm not outrunning goons in upper Market!
Pricey but delicious. They also have a col/hot food bar that leaves the bland, undercooked stuff at Whole Foods in the dust.
They would have 5 stars if the owner hadn't yelled at my wife and her co-workers when they were trying to purchase a large cake for an office function.
Purty darn good. Egg salad and creamed spinach. I'm sold. Bit pricey but worth it.
I've been here twice and always enjoyed the fact that they serve organic foods and even have vegetarian options. I do feel the buffet items are a little over priced but my mainly I wish they restocked on items more often.
Other than that what I really come here for are the desserts. I love their bread pudding with fresh bananas or strawberries with a rich and thick custard. It's a huge slice for under $5 bucks and always leaves me satisfied.
The service is always friendly and the quality is always high.
I've been here for lunch three times and it was tasty. The vegetarian selection was good (not amazing, but not just 2 things either) and what I got tasted great. The place is pretty much packed at lunch time but they manage to check people out quickly so the wait wasn't bad at all.
If you're up for a $10-$15 lunch this is a great choice.
Tres Leches!!!!!!!!!!
My friend had this for her birthday cake and I have never had anything so good in my life! YUM!
Thank you for introducing me to Delessio's Tres Leches cake =)
I'm addicted!
Mmm..Delessio, you little minx you. This is a charming little gem hidden away on the always filthy Market St.
Strong points:
- Excellent service. Patient and caring staff makes for a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
- Great food. From their quiches to their desserts, you can taste the pride they take in the quality and flavor of their food.
- Charming decor. Again, warm and welcoming like the staff. This place has personality, both in its food and its surroundings.
Definitely check this place out for lunch. It'll be well worth the visit.
I'm embarrassed I hadn't reviewed Delessio sooner! I really can't say enough good things about their catering department. Laura and her team catered my wedding at SF City Hall and they did a fantastic job. Let me count the reasons why I love them so much:
1) We didn't have a big budget, but they were great at making it all work for us.
2) They were willing to work with the extremely anal and frustrating rules that City Hall has for private events.
3) Their prices cannot be beat for the service they deliver.
4) Laura and her team were kind and fun while being very professional.
5) Our wedding was nearly a year ago and our guests STILL keep talking about how great the food was. In fact, people have talked about it so much, I often wonder if the food was more memorable than the actual ceremony!
I usually stay away from buffets because they usually suck. Cheap, greasy, unhealthy food that has been sitting out all day. Bleh. But two years ago a coworker told me I had to try this place, she actually said, "It will change your life".
She was right. Delessio is not a typical buffet. The food is consistently fresh, organic and very tasty. The Bakery is excellent; best chocolate chip cookie EVER. The carmelitas, mini cupcakes, Brazilian toast, and sweet potato butterscotch bars are all amazing. To top it off the guys that work there are super friendly and nice to look at.
Delessio, you make me happy :)
AMAZING food and baked goods! They have a large selection of food at lunch time - you can get food from the buffet style lunch bar, order a sandwich from the back 'deli', pick from a selection of soups... and then top off your meal with an overdose of chocolate bubble wrap in assorted flavors or with some mini cupcakes or other mouth-watering treats. It's pricey, but worth the money for some excellent quality goods. And the staff is very friendly and helpful. We don't live in the city so when we do come to Delessio we have to stock up!
The customer service at DeLessio is top notch.
My friend and I used Yelp to help find a nearby dessert place so I could pick up some treats for home. We chose DeLessio based on the great reviews and were not disappointed.
We walked inside and checked out the pastries behind the glass only to be told that the bakery was in fact closed, but the associate still let us order a variety of mini cupcakes to go. This shows a lot about their customer service. See, I've worked numerous retail jobs and I know that once the store closes all you want to do is leave, and you most definitely do NOT want to help a couple of dumb girls who don't check a store's hours before coming in.
To top it off, he gave us a bag of muffins for free just because it was the end of the day. Score!
We tried a lemon cupcake with a raspberry center and one that had an almond flavor (I can't find out exactly what it was). Both were great -- not the moistest cupcakes, but extremely rich and full of flavor. There's about an inch of icing on top of the cupcake, which kind of throws the icing-cupcake ratio off, but it was tasty nonetheless.
I'll give this store my patronage if I need any cakes in the future. Customer service like theirs should be rewarded.
It's love or hate with this location. When they're on, they're ON! And when they're off...well...they're just kind of off. HOWEVER...I spend a lot of time with some particularly wonderful people at Southern Exposure Gallery who oftentimes deserve special treats for reasons I will not disclose in this review. And DeLessio is the perfect place to bribe...er...suprise them with miniature cupcakes, cookies, and confections beyond your wildest imagination (oh god, I hope none of them are vegan and just eating this crap to be polite!).
I digress...I normally would give them 2-3 stars for food that reminds me of the many useless men I've had in my life: looks great coming towards you but has the personality of a doorknob, the intelligence of a fruit fly, and a zest for life that compares only to that of your comatose grandfather. In a nutshell: bland, boring, and more expensive than it's worth to keep alive and warm.
Today, they did it, though. And WOW, they did it in a B-I-G way. Three words. Braised. Shortribs. Lasagne. Get on with your bad self, DeLessio! And don't let mama down again.
I have been stopping by this location for take out dinner about 4 times per week for the last three months. The food is so fresh, the services is so nice, and they switch the menu around enough so as to keep things interesting. They say they mostly use organic and I say it always fresh and at least it tastes like its organic.,
Think Whole Foods, but better. Way better. Maybe I'm just bored with Whole Foods because I go there so damn much. Today I swung by Delessio because I was waiting across the street at the DMV (in what ended up to be a 2 hour wait). I was hungry and browsed the prepared foods: salads, lasagnas, roasted chicken, roasted turkey, sandwiches, and paninis! What to choose? Looked at the specials board and it sung to me... "Roasted Leg of Lamb Panini." It was @#$%ing good. Need I say more? I'll spare you the adjectives... I also tried a bit of the mac 'n cheese. I'm not sure what they put in it. There's goat cheese for sure, and it just makes it heavenly.
MUST HAVE: Roasted Leg of Lamb Panini... if they have it that day...
A friend of mine brought me here for the first time.. and all I can say is WOW!
Was able to sample a few of their (amazing) cheeses... First a delicious, firm goats cheese.. and second was the most incredible Brie that I have ever had. Smooth, like a thick whipped butter, but a bit sweeter. 'Delice De Argental Triple Creme- France'. Buy some! The employees are very knowledgeable and, you can tell, very passionate about what they do.
They have a gorgeous dessert bar as well-- and little dixie cups are provided so that you can help yourself to a sample! I tried the Tres Leches cake and almost died. Absolute cake perfection. You can buy it by the pound in take-home boxes of various sizes. Most, creamy.. without being too rich or sweet. They also sell cookies, brownies, cupcakes, etc. OH! And, full sized cakes are also available-- and very reasonably priced too! $25 for a full sized, gorgeous, organic-ingredients cake??
Love it. Will absolutely, positively be back. Again and Again.
HOT COCOA
Dame fine cocoa! And fresh made whip cream! None of that canned junk... Hell Yeah!
CHOCOLATE
From the house made"Bubble Wrap"chocolate series - Dark Chocolate with ginger and coconut. OOoOooooo SNAP! It is so dame good! And did I get charged wrong? I got what would be like a $9 bar from some "fancy" chocolate place, for like 58 cents. Yeah... 58 freak'n cents! Say What!?!?!? I'm glad I don't live near by! It was so tasty... I mean really, this is some good $hit. I'd eat it by the bucket.

The place is small, people are wandering all over the place like headless chickens. Not sure where the line starts and ends?!!!?
They do have a pretty large selection of food but then again, you probably wont be able to taste more than half of it because its never really refilled.
But then again, maybe you wont care because you will be too full from drinking your water or juice or lemonade or water.....why?!?! well because majority of the items here are just too damn salty. I know american food can be salty...but come on this is ridiculous.
Im going to try the other place and hopefully it will be better~ -_-

The buffet food is good and organic (that by it's name translates to more expensive). But it's worth it. Beautiful desserts and nice wines.
I really like the whole thing they have going on here. SO many things I liked to say. I have eaten here more times than I can remember.
I has all been good.
Mac and Chez
Potatoes
Vegies
Chicken
Meatloaf. I can't remember what else.
Oh Desserts. Kickin........Kickin.....
You can't go wrong with anything with chocolate here. They have the BEST chocolate cake!! It is very rich and creamy, and taste like authentic real chocolate that leaves a great aftertaste. Unlike those from Safeway or other bakeries which you can only taste sugar. Don't underestimate the petite size.. I ordered the smallest Triple Chocolate Mousse cake ($40), and i kid you not, it can serves ~20 people for a post-dinner dessert. A little tiny slice is all you need to satisfy your chocolate craving. Rich and delicious..
I also highly recommend their Strawberry and Chocolate mousse cup pastry. I need to go to the fridge to get a scope of the left over chocolate mousse cake again.. wait, I think I just had that for breakfast too. I mean a post-breakfast dessert. OM NOM NOM NOM NOM!
Delessio, you are now OVERPRICED!!!!
I am writing this review with extreme sadness in my heart: This USED to be my favorite lunch hangout, and now I fear I will never dine here again.
Here's the deal: the hot & cold salad bars, which generally have delicious dishes to choose from, used to be about $8.50-.75 lb. This is the upper range of what I'm willing to spend on lunch, but I did it because I loved the variety and found the dishes tasty.
But just a few days ago, I walked in and saw that they have suddenly upped the price to $12.50 lb!!!! They are claiming that this is because they've converted all their food to locally grown and farmed. Looking around the buffet, the same dishes as always greeted my eyes, except when I tasted my lunch (which rang up at almost $16!!! I used to pay only about $10-11), it was dried out, overcooked, and told me right off the bat that it'd been sitting around a long time on that buffet.
So, in case my writing's been convoluted and you haven't been able to follow, I'm saying that I just paid a LOT more money for something that tasted far INFERIOR to what I used to get here.
Ugh.
I'm so mad. And I'm apparently not alone. I complained about the price hike to the guy who rang me up, and he rolled his eyes and said that they were losing a lot of customers because of it, I wasn't the first to complain by any stretch of the imagination! I'm glad to know that the rest of the world hasn't lost its mind and decided that it's reasonable to pay much more for the same thing, or as it happens to be, something of lower discernible quality!!!
Delessio, what were you thinking?!! Do you WANT to go out of business?? Have you NOTICED that there's a recession going on around you, and possibly even a financial depression???
I for one won't be giving Delessio my business anymore. I felt like I was going to choke on that food for how much it cost!! It is, in short, ridiculous!! So, my dear ex-favorite lunch spot, SO LONG AND GOOD LUCK!!!
I realize that Delessio's Market Fresh Bounty buffet accounts for a disproportionate share of my food intake, and that without it, I would be forced to consume ramen, grilled cheese, scrambled eggs, or one of the other three things I know how to cook, but really-- i'm okay with that.
This is hands-down the best buffet in town, serving only the finest, freshest ingredients to create delectable dishes that all follow the slow food mantra (local, sustainable, organic, and ethical). I usually have a categorical aversion to any food involving a buffet, but for Delessio I gladly make an exception. Chew on that, Whole Foods!
Mini cupcakes.
Mind-blowing, stomach-snuggling, sweet-tooth-satisfying mini cupcakes.
If you haven't had the extreme pleasure (and honestly, it's an inappropriate sort of pleasure in that really good way) of having one of their mini cupcakes, let me expound the virtues of mini cupcakes over their larger brethren.
Mini cupcakes are about 1" tall with about 1" of frosting on top. This is the ideal size for eating, as most of the cupcake does not end up on your cheeks and nose rather than in your mouth and eventually tummy. Additionally, one can take a bite of a mini cupcake (preferably pumpkin spice with vanilla buttercream and caramel drizzle) and get equal parts of both frosting and cake, rather than being forced to take separate bites of each because the cupcake is too big and your mouth is too small.
Also, you don't have to feel bad about eating a mini cupcake because it's MINI, i.e. it has no calories.
... at least that's my story and I'm stickin' to it.
Prices are once again $9.95 per pound.
Like all "dish your own food places", be careful not to end up with 1 1/2 pounds of food cause you try a dab of everything.
We decided to get our wedding cakes from De Lessio and use them as our centerpieces. No one has ever tasted a cake like their malted vanilla and it's exciting and fun yet elegant look was exactly what we were looking for. We met with a cake maker, but decided we were so much happier with these. They delivered, were friendly and we couldn't have been happier. The next day people were telling us they wanted more of our wedding cake! Have a look at our photo.
They also catered my mom's surprise 50th birthday party and Laura helped guide us with what kind of variety and amounts of food we should have. Everyone loved it!
Coworker wanted to stop in for lunch since many places are not open at 2pm. This place is actually relatively small and was disappointing. I looked around at the selection and it wasn't impressive. I feel like paying per lb of food is a rip off, what if you like heavy food! They did have many desserts but I wasn't here for that! They also only had 3 different types of beers (in bottles). I had the Scrimshaw, which was tasty. I won't be returning to actually try lunch, I'm not into the buffet, pay per pound eating.
Roasted turkey and cranberry panini.... mmm-mmm-mmm!!!
I had lunch at this charming Italian bakery. It's a narrow restaurant, brightly decorated in red and black, with an eye-catching salad bar set up in the center, an amazing bakery case with irresistable, mouth-watering pastries and towering cakes and a very appetizing sandwich display.
It's a little cramped, not a lot of tables, but service is efficient and super-friendly. We sat on the patio until it got a little too windy.
My panini was delicious - grilled bread, nice and crispy, yummy flavors of cheese, cranberry and turkey. It's the "tear-your-mouth-up" kind of bread, but not to the extreme and any inner mouth injuries are well worth it. The bakery smells delicious and the flavors will not disappoint.
I went back on One's opinion that I hold high in matters of food. Mine.
It was after lunch, perhaps 2? I was so excited. I was back. At the new home of my taste buds, they could not WAIT for a mini cupcake, a pile of hot food from the iron skillets and most of all, the banana meringue tart.
Snatched a plate, ran over to the food bar and my heart sunk a little. Nothing really there. Potatoes, more potatoes, remnants and potatoes. Well, that's what I get for coming at 2, perhaps. No matter, I came for the dessert. The "real food" is simply my foil.
Dessert. Banana Tart please. Ooh. Oh no. WHAT did you do to my tart?? Not at all what I had that first, glorious day. No, this day's was soggy crust, NO peanuts, NO ganache!! where did my little piece of perfection go??
Determined not to let this experience be the last word, my Dear Mother has since gone back again, no wanting to let this be the end. Bad news was afoot. Another go at the tart, this "banana" was pear! and not nicely cut up pear pieces. No. It had seeds, it was essentially halved and put in the soggy crust. Only the meringue was familiar. She arrived at lunch time and was met with the same fate as I, nothing much but spuds.
Delessio! In the words of the chic in "Atonement" - Come back to me!

Why had I never heard of this place? If I were to forget about it, that would be good and bad. Good… Read more »
We came to Delessio for their hot food buffet, but came out in love with their baked goods. My sister had wanted to eat here for a while now and so it was with some excitement that we made our way down Market and into the comfortably snug Delessio.
Once you enter, you're greeted with the irresistible scent of freshly made food- on our visit, the buffet table featured mac n' cheese, Cuban roast pork, rotisserie chicken, a potato casserole, Sichuan eggplant, and a few other dishes. The mac n' cheese was sublimely cheesy and it was my favorite dish here. The roast pork was tasty, though a little dry, while the chicken was decent- I wish the skin had been a little crisper.
You can get pretty carried away with how much food you're piling onto your plate, especially when they put down a new dish of mac n' cheese, so try to control your portions. My sister and I ended up with a little over a pound of food each, which was more than plenty for the two of us for lunch.
We didn't have much room for dessert, but we had to check out their cakes and pastries anyway. They had the most darling mini cupcakes- I got the red velvet, peanut butter, and orange creamiscle flavors. I also couldn't resist getting some of their cookies, as well as a slice of their cake du jour- a well-spiced carrot cake with a layer of ginger cream cheese in the center. The cupcakes were delicious- the cake was a little dry, but I did like their frosting, which was very smooth, not too sweet, and definitely not too buttery. The cookies were okay- I liked the lemon one best. The cake was good, but the ginger cream cheese had a little too much ginger in it.
Overall, Delessio made some wonderful food. The items at the self-serve buffet were of a really good quality and some of the panini sandwiches (Cuban pork!) sound really good. And they make some damn good mini-cupcakes! I'd come back to try more of their cakes- the lemon cheesecake looks delish!
The best place for coffee - the mocha is better than any i've had, including the neighborhood favorite Blue Bottle. If i know i'm going to have a long busy day at work, i actually get out of the house a little early so i can swing by Delessio's and grab a mocha and something from their mouth-watering bakery section, so that the day starts right !!
Knocked off a star coz their food is nice but doesn't really match up to the coffee or the pastries. Also, (and this is more my problem than Delessio's), i have to say it's slightly expensive to indulge in everyday.
But a full 5 stars for dependability and quality !!
