5 reviews for Del Mar Golf Center
I've been taking a beginners clinic at night. I think it's tough to have 1 instructor per 7 students or something. But for the most part, it's not bad. I think it cost about $170 for a 5 wk class (1.5 hrs/wk).
Adam has been our main instructor - super laid back and very knowledgeable. Tim substituted one time and he was awesome as well. They're all just nice unpretentious golfers (i know! can you believe it!).
I've only had the courage to go practice during class. I don't have the guts, just yet, to go there on my own and hit a bucket of balls. I told the instructor this and he was super encouraging - told me that there's nothing to be worried about and the skill levels at this place are really varied.
I've only been at night - and it's nice and quiet for the most part. Right now, the range closes at 8p, with lights turning off around 820p or so.
I went to play minigolf here...there are 2 - 18 hole courses.
Having played at a lot of other minigolf courses on the east coast and midwest, this was at the top for cleanliness and upkeep. The theme was alright, but I wish it was a little bit more difficult. Some of the holes are just way too easy. Personally even if I can see the hole in a straight shot (which I'm not sure why they do that), I play the hole the way it looks like it was designed to be.
For being so close to the 5, it was suprisingly quiet. There was a kids party going on, and a couple of crazy youngsters running around...this didn't really bother me (1. they're kids, 2. it was a nice saturday afternoon).
Cost: $9 / person, $4 / replay (another 18 holes)
not sure about the cost for kids, but it is on their website.
When I used to drive from UTC to Carlsbad every day for work, especially in the Spring and Summer, there wasn't a day where I didn't have the clubs in the car. Just in case I wanted to go hit some balls after work, this was my favorite spot. Even though you can see it from the freeway, there isn't too much freeway noise, or at least not enough to be distracting.
I liked the variety of being able to practice chipping, putting, pitching and hitting. Even though there are no holes, grass or flags, just nets and dirt, my favorite thing is that the range ends at the creek. I've judged that the creek is about 300 - 320 yards out. The best feeling is really cranking one and watching it disappear into the creek. Granted the creek filters to the ocean and the ball probably gets stuck in a whales blow hole then it dies, but I still feel good about the drive!

This is my favourite all-in-one practice place. There are four short game areas (no entrance fee). Both grass and mats. The buckets are fairly priced. Overall, it's well maintained and fun spot to spend a few hours practicing.
The one thing that this range fall slightly short on is the field is just dirt -- or in otherwords brown. So optically it's hard to discern exact carry yardages and there's virtually no roll.
The mix of beginners and players suits well for both the ego and something to aspire to.

Del Mar Golf Center has a new mini-golf course that is fun for families. There are two 18 hole mini courses, one with an ocean theme and the other with a surfing theme. I went there on a Sunday around noon with my kids and we had a great time. This is a great family place where you can take your kids to play mini-golf other than Boomers. I think they recently opened following a complete renovation. The place is clean and at a great location, right off the 5, next to the Del Mar Fair Grounds. The prices are reasonable also. The Golf Center looks fun too, with a nice driving range and a putting green.
