Had a great meal here last night. Used the entertainment card which saved me 15 bucks....seafood alfredo was packed with huge scallops fresh clams large shrimp and 4 crab claws. I must admit I did not know what to do with the claws. They were impossible to break but they looked pretty cool. My companion had the filet that was perfectly prepared and served with fresh veggies and nice baked potatoes.
They used team servers so refills on drinks were plentiful. Kind of a funky Lark street crowd with the typical tatooed bar staff. I will come back again if they still take the card in 2012.... -

I've been to DeJohn's about 15 times in various capacities over the years from a full dinner, to a drink, to a quick pop-in to use the bathroom.
Average bar food quality that's a tad overpriced. Order the basics (burger, pizza, wings, etc.) and save your money for the drinks. Don't order anything that looks too complicated for the bar-food "chef."
With that out of the way, I will say DeJohn's has a nice semi-professional feel to it and the waitstaff dress well and seem to be attentive. Eating at or in front of the bar is enjoyable and one of the better experiences in the area. Some of the waitstaff are a bit on the young side and a little too involved in their own workplace socializing. On one occasion for over an hour, it was a chore to get the bartender's attention for refills/orders while he was chatting it up with his coworkers.
I'd like to give DeJohn's 2.5 stars, but I'm stuck with 2 or 3. The food is really 2 stars and the overall experience is 3. -

I don't get down to eat in Albany much so when some friends invited me to DeJohn's it sounded like fun. I heard some mixed reviews between friends and other yelpers but I went in with an open mind and a hungry stomach. The first thing I noticed (after the homeless man asked me for money out front) when I walked in was the atmosphere. I love it. It has that Lark Street vibe with a just enough class to keep out some of the riff raff. The next thing I noticed were the prices. Not justified by the atmosphere at all. A pecan crusted chicken meal for 19 dollars?! Still, I'm starving and I knew I'd be spending a few dollars. I don't mind spending more money for good quality food.
I ordered a house Cabnernet which to my liking was still a $5 happy hour special (we sat around 6:30). Next came the bread. 2 thumbs up here. Fresh hot rolls with various butter flavors depending on the day. I try to stay away from the butter, but it was maple flavor. It's October. Who am I to say no to maple butter? Delish. I eventually decide on the Pecan Encrusted Chicken. Its description says "topped with fresh dill, sour cream, and mustard sauce." This is sounding great! After what seemed like forever (and 2 rolls), our meals came. What was on my plate appeared to be 2 fried chicken breasts with honey mustard drizzled on it. I went for the potatoes first as to not burn my tongue (which I subsequently did anway). They were reminiscent of home fries at my favorite breakfast jaunt. Loaded with butter. So they were good, but not what I expected at a restaurant witch claims to serve higher end food. When I got to my chicken it was dry. The pecan crust was tasty, but honestly I felt like I was eating a glorified chicken tender from TGI Friday's. Difference being at least TGI Friday's tend to be a little bit juicier. I make this comparison because there was a time in my life before I discovered "real" restaurants when Friday's Pecan Crusted Chicken salad was my favorite meal. And the topping? This "mustard sauce" really did further the chicken tender feel. Just felt like a typical dipping sauce, which was necessary to flavor the meal. I was disappointed I didn't have more. In the end, I brought one of the breasts home to my dogs. Anybody who has been out to eat with me has probably never seen me take leftovers, as I clean my plate!
The time between we finished our meal, were able to ask for the check pay and receive change, it felt like hours. Our server was attentive when he was around, but it was few and far between.
Overall I had a good time because of the company I was with and the restaurant's atmosphere. I will definitely go back to sit at the bar and enjoy a few cocktails, but I will take my food money elsewhere. -

This summer we visited DeJohns again for the Soba Noodle salad and a little patio seating. The salad was delicious as usual, but we had an issue with the service that might cause me to never return. I ordered a frozen margarita and was delivered a glass 3/4 filled with foam, and a good tablespoon of salt sitting in the bottom of the glass, making the drink undrinkable. We sent it back, and I told the waiter I would stick with water. Despite only taking one sip of the drink before sending it back, the waiter kept it on our bill. Bad form.

I've been coming here for years, but only recently have I started dining here. That being said, I'll likely be back here soon, but probably not for dinner.
My primary problem with dinner here isn't that any of the food is bad at all, it just doesn't stand out when you compare it to what is available in the area. For about the same price you can go up to the street to Wine Bar and get a far superior steak, or go down to New World and try some really imaginative dishes. Furthermore, I always feel like I'm on top of the people next to me when I do dine on the second floor (there are three narrow floors, with the third traditionally hosting an event of some sorts in my experience).
As far as food goes here, I'm going to stick to appetizers and drinks. If that's what you're looking for then this is a great location, with excellent bartenders. The back patio is spacious and kept clean, while in the colder months the first floor bar area is perfect for small groups looking to share a drink after work. -

Was rolling through albany and stopped in here based on reviews on yelp. It was sunday during lunch and we were the only ones there. They had an issue with soda and my hoegarden wasnt really that cold. We got quesadillas (a special buffalo one) and a wrap. Both were huge.
Prices weren't terrible, service was friendly and efficient.
Smelt a little funky, but food was good. Probably not good enough to come back though.
FYI google maps has no idea where this place is. They will send you about 2 blocks away on the wrong street. -

Had a mediocre meal here recently...the Brie appetizer and the spinach dip were not very good, the spinach dip was even cold in the middle! Entrees were good, and the service was OK, our server disappeared for a while after the delivery of apps so we could not inform him of our problem until it felt too late to fix it. Would try this place again.

Solid. I went into Dejohn's on a whim after Art on Lark today. The dark homey atmosphere was drawing me in all day as I walked by several times. I am glad we returned tonight for drinks and apps.
First off you can tell the staff is happy to be there. The handsome bartender took great care of us even though he was busy.
We shared two apps, crab cakes and the ginger chicken egg rolls. Both were good especially the crab cakes. I appreciated the unfussy preparations- the flavor was spot on.
I am glad we stumbled upon this place and I recommend it. -

Went here one day when I wanted good food, but didn't want to go through the effort of cooking it myself. I went early, around 4:30pm on a weekend.
As you enter the lowest level (bar) there's a aroma that can only be found in bars (not particularly attractive to the nostrils, but not so awful that you can't get used to it). I have been in bars that have been able to maintain an existence without this smell, so that's the reason for the 3 stars instead of 4. It's dark and dingy and loud.
I decided to go up a floor to the dining room, which is nice, well lit, doesn't have the smell, and since I was early, I had it all to myself. I did not go up to the third floor which I hear sometimes serves as an expansion of the dining area and sometimes as a reserved private dining room.
I ordered the duck, and I must say I was pleased. The amount of food that came out was huge (lots of orzo, lots and lots of veg, and the duck breast isn't small either). The duck could have been a little crispier on the fat side, but it was pretty good. The staff was attentive enough that I got my water refilled frequently. From a health food nut perspective, I think that the portions maybe healthier if they were smaller, especially less of the orzo, but I was famished that day and polished it all off, so the portion size was not so much that it's impossible or painful to finish.
As an appetizer they have hazelnut chicken fingers that I will try one day soon. I'm intrigued, and look forward to more meals there in the future (and possibly upgrading them to 4 star status). -

I've been to DeJohn's on at least a dozen occasions and will continue to go back but not for the food but rather the atmosphere. The bar has several high top tables and about 10-12 chairs at the bar. Its dimly lit and would encourage a romantic atmosphere but for the over abundance of young 20 something political sycophants having boisterous political conversations (snore and obnoxious, but what can you expect from the "me" generation). The patio out back is VERY nice and I've had many of enjoyable evenings with friends and dates out there; you forget you're in Albany. The dining room on the second floor is tasteful and there are a couple of tables in the front window that lend a certain something to the atmosphere (so long as you don't look down into the seas of wannabe hipster that plague Lark Street). The wait staff is professional, albeit occasionally pretension but not bothersomely so. The wine list is good, they have Guinness on tap, and my friends have liked the special martinis. People are dressed any where from jeans and sweaters/polo shirts to suits. They have a third floor that is used for large groups and reserved parties. The stairs are steep and scary if you're wearing heels.
Now you must be thinking Cujo is out of her mind with the 2 stars because she just gave a glowing review on atmosphere. The 2 stars is an average: 3 stars for atmosphere, wine list, and service and 1 star for food....Okay okay, maybe I'll give it 2.5 stars but that is only because I love the feel of the place.
Items that I've had: baked brie, fruit and cheese board, chicken ginger egg rolls, hazelnut chicken fingers, greens and beans, potato encrusted scrod, bruchetta and from entree: pecan encrusted chicken, seafood fra diavolo, smoked chicken carbonara, and several of the evening specials. None of the items were bad (except the pecan encrusted chicken) and i'll go so far as to say I've order the potato encrusted scrod at least twice and enjoyed every bite. It is exceptionally over priced for the quality. Come on, $10 for a tiny wedge of brie? $9 for 4 skinny ginger chicken egg rolls that are clearly sourced from the freezer section at Price Chopper. $8.50 for greens and beans that are drowning in olive oil. Almost $20 for pecan encrusted chicken with some heavy mouth coating sauce. my biggest complaint about the pecan chicken and the hazelnut chicken for that matter is that they leave a lot of big pieces of the nuts rather than finely grating the nuts which results in the nuts becoming very hard after being FRIED in a deep fryer (not pan or oven fried) and resulted in 2 very close calls with breaking teeth. I also find that they over salt everything....almost like they run a salt shaker over everything before it comes to your table. And nothing really has that "fresh" taste to it...it all tastes like its been frozen.
I do not discourage you from going to DeJohn's because of the wine list and atmosphere which make you feel like you're not in Albany, but just be ready to leave with a lighter wallet for generally low quality food.Listed in: Fancy Pants

Albany, NY
DeJohn's is one of my favorite restaurants in the Capital Region.
I've been to DeJohn's over a dozen times, and have yet to be disappointed. My better half and I make it a point to return for special occasions (anniversaries, birthdays, etc). While the downstairs bar area can get a bit cramped , they have a nice patio area in the back that opens up during the warmer months. A minor ding based on a pet peeve of mine, is that the large flat screen televisions mounted on the bar wall appear tacky in such an establishment.
I suggest that those who find the downstairs too small request a table on the upper level (there are three levels, with the third being for functions). Each time we go for a romantic night out we request one of the two small tables for two overlooking Lark Street. The ambiance is perfect as much of the old woodwork has been restored beautifully, and those that appreciate brownstone interior architecture will find the look very appealing.
The menu is varied enough to have something to cater to everyone's taste. I usually order the steak w/ gorgonzola, which, served with a bed of fried onions on top, is delicious! But perhaps my favorite part of DeJohn's is the cocktails. Each season the bartenders create a new cocktail menu with their own "twist" on seasonal favorites. When so many other restaurants are simply willing to make do with what drink is popular at the moment, DeJohn's actually seems to care about creating new and exciting drinks. We have spoken to the bar staff on numerous occasions, and they do appear to take pride in their profession.
I've noted that a couple other reviewers have mentioned that DeJohn's is overpriced. I do not know what these people expect, but honestly $20 for a solid steak entrée with sides is not really overpriced when you consider that this isn't Applebees. True, martinis can run you in the $10-12 range, but I can name numerous places in the Capital District that also charge the same amount for inferior cocktails. That, and you certainly won't be skimped on the good stuff (i.e. if you've had more than one, don't even think about driving). They may have been seen as the upper end of the price spectrum a decade ago, but when you consider that the area is home to places such as 677, the Brown Derby, Yono's, Mcguires, and the like the prices at DeJohns seem downright reasonable.
Overall a wonderful experience each time. -
Review from Pete R.
San Diego, CA
You wouldn't know from the looks of this place how really scrumptious their food is. It just looks like a dark, appealing bar - a narrow, wood-paneled downstairs joint with a little patio out back. The kind of place you want to have a drink in, maybe watch some baseball and chat with the old salt next to you.
But the food is pretty outstanding! Way better than typical pub fare, this is gourmet stuff. Crab-stuffed salmon: mmmm! Served with rice and a pile of fresh vegetables. (I hate when places skimp on the veggies, or give you some overcooked afterthought on the side - give me some green to make me think I'm balancing out the gluttonous main course.) We also had some kind of potato-wrapped-pecan-crusted scrod thing for an appetizer, which is delicious and big enough to be an entree itself.
Service was pretty good; some delay in getting drinks and such, but more than made up for in friendliness. Our server was even nice enough to tell us we didn't need the large spinach salad because the small was pretty huge - how many restaurants have the courtesy to downsell you to a smaller portion when appropriate? Nice.
The meal was a bit pricey in the end, but I'd say we got what we paid for. (A couple rounds of custom martinis probably didn't help the wallet either, but they sure were good.)
Great spot on Lark Street! -

The quesedilla I got at DeJohn's the other night really put the ?Que? in quesedilla. It had all of the basic components of a chicken quesedilla, but they were far from what you would expect. I'm not sure what the kitchen was aiming for on this one; maybe an Italian twist to a Mexican classic?
Basic Component # 1: Cheese -- it was not cheddar. I couldn't identify what it was beyond the "dug out from the back of the fridge" odor / flavor it emitted.
Basic Component # 2: Chicken -- they were chunks that were more than bite-sized, which made it difficult to pick up the tortilla. They were seasoned with oregano. Not a hint of spiciness or Mexican flavor at all.
Basic Component # 3: Salsa -- well, they were diced tomatoes in a ramekin, which I foolishly thought would be the salsa to add some ... I don't know ... MEXICAN flavor to the que?sedilla. No. They were sitting in balsamic vinagrette.
To DeJohn's credit, the tortilla and the sour cream were not functioned as expected. The sour cream was advertised to be flavored with pico de gallo, but no flavor was to be found. I just used it to douse out the nasty taste of the cheese and the chicken (what can I say? I was hungry for goodness' sake!) -

"It's Nice to Look At"
by Josh K.
This review is meant to be for the restaurant side, not the pub/bar
Martinis and beer were fine...very good happy hour special (if that's your scene)...it's a nice looking place in the heart of the Lark St. nightlife.
However, I had the misfortune of eating here Friday night. The menu was diverse, but as other reviewers mentioned, very overpriced.
I ordered the Barbeque Pizza after it was recommended to me by someone I don't normally trust...and there is a reason.
He told me the pizza was a authentic Italian style- thin, crispy wood oven...He couldn't have been more wrong. What I got was chewy dough with air pockets, topped with flavorless chicken (not to say chicken has a lot of flavor), and just a touch of mozzarella smeared with sweet (I want tangy) grocery store bought bbq sauce drenched on it.
My friend got the large Spinach salad (also 9.99) but she had grilled chicken added to it (extra 5.50). A whopping 16 bucks for a plate of spinach with carrots, a tomato, cucumbers, and some grilled chicken (same as what was thrown on my pizza)...I'm astonished they can get away with this.
Maybe we should have tried something else, but I'm not going to. Nothing appeared to warrant a second trip.
Even the ambiance was a miss. Although the service was fast and friendly, our waitress was hovering over us. We had a nice window view seat and they wanted to keep business streaming rather than have us linger over a few drinks after the meal.
I will probably be back for a drink, but definitely not to eat. Fifty dollars for two could have been better spent somewhere else. -

Guilderland, NY
The food isn't anything to write home about. Nothing bad, however, it lacks any sort of originality. That being said, it's a cute place with an extremely friendly and helpful waitstaff. It's quiet and comfortable (at least the three or four times I've been there) and seems to attract an eclectic crowd. Again, not the best food in the world, but I'll continue to go back for drinks and to people watch.

For some reason the map shows this in the wrong place - it's around the corner, on Lark just S. of Hamilton. I had an excellent meal here the other night, out on the back patio. They have a good selection of wines by the glass. Started with hazelnut-crusted chicken fingers (more like palms) which were an interesting take on the dish, then a soba noodle salad. I was excited to see this on the menu, but I don't understand why they'd put shredded carrot and tomato on it -- it wasn't bad, just over-Americanized for the underlying dish. Steak with gorgonzola was outstanding.
They do let people smoke on the back patio, which may be a plus or minus.... -

Really overpriced food, which is not always great. Sometimes actively bad (hazelnut chicken fingers). I'd get the Soba Noodle Salad. It's tasty and reasonably priced, though sometimes over-sauced.
This place charges as though it was in nyc for everything. It's not. I love the pear martini, but sometimes it sells out.
They make a relatively tasty long island iced tea, but it is weak sauce.
The music is also hit or miss depending on the bartender. -

Review from Caitlin I.

Alright, this review is seriously late on my part considering the first time I was here was about two years ago and I made a return visit last month for a Valentine's dinner and drinks date extraordinaire with friends...but better late than never, right? Well, that's what I'm tellng myself anyways.
Upstairs, downstairs, drinks, dinner, it doesn't really matter where you are or what you're there for, DeJohn's is a great place for everything. The first time I was here was strictly for drinks. Friends and I decided to stop here before our 80s night out on the town (in full 80s gear including crimped hair, leg warmers and fluorescent heels) and while everyone and their mother gave us death glares and funny looks, the wait staff was actually complimentary towards us, got us our drinks and laughed with us. Score one for them.
I was also here about a month ago for a sit down meal (and drinks, can't forget the drinks) with friends and had the same enjoyable experience that I had my first time here. The staff was amazing, sitting down with us periodically throughout the night, regaling us with stories and conversation, but not in the overly obnoxious "get away from me while I try to eat" way I've experienced before. Dinner was delicious, the drinks were, well, incredibly strong to put it mildly, but no one seemed to mind while we all sat around, talking and swapping stories of our own and asking for glass of water after glass of water. By the time all was said and done, we ended up shutting the restaurant down and were left with an open invitation to come back anytime. A little pricey for my regular taste, but every now and then when you just need to treat yourself and escape, I highly recommend DeJohn's and everything they have to offer. -

I went to DeJohns following a graduation ceremony downtown. They were extremely accomodating and set up a private table for our large party upstairs. The waitstaff was very helpful and the food was good.
I've also had appetizers and drinks at DeJohns on their back patio. It's pretty cute and secluded but the chairs are a little uncomfortable and the tables were kind of wobbly. We ordered the fruit and cheese board and I wasn't extremely impressed. The cheese was good but not great and the fruit wasn't very flavorful or fresh. -

It's been a while since I returned to de johns and my experience was considerably better. The atmosphere was cozy, their seasonal drink menu was adventurous (and delish), the portions generous and the food exception. The service also improve significantly since the last time I went there. We tried DeJohn's for the first time last night. We arrived early so had some Paulaner at the bar. Very nice setting, with plenty of tables, bar seats, and patio seating. The bartender was very good; courteous and efficient. The hostess took us to the table upstairs. It overlooked Lark which stimulated good conversation. Our waiter, a wonderful guy from Macedonia, was great. He knew when it was ok to come over and make conversation and when to leave us to ourselves. He was friendly, funny, and well practiced.
We had the Greek Salad special which was huge and very nice. Excellent fresh veggies and the feta was creamy and rich. I had the Chicken Roulade and he the Shrimp Scampi. Mine was amazing, so good I ate it all even though I was pretty full. His was ok, nothing to wonderful but good enough that I brought the leftovers to work for lunch today. Just a note: I made the reservations through OpenTable which the restaurant knows means I will write a review, so that could explain the exceptional service!!! Definitely we will be going back. -

This place has something for every mood. You can sit at the bar, near the bar, upstairs or WAY upstairs- depending on who you are with and how quite you want it. When the weather is nice you can also sit on the cute enclosed patio. The menu ranges from burgers to 4 course dining. I have tried at least half of the menu and its all great. A few favorites of mine are the ginger chicken egg rolls and the pulled pork sandwich. My friends and I dine here VERY frequently. Its location on Lark makes it easy to start the night with dinner and drinks here and head elsewhere as your mood takes you..

I recently went here for dinner and was reminded how much I like this place. There really is a seating option for whatever kind of mood you're in - bar, outside patio, and a room for a nicer dinner. I've always been pleasantly surprised by the food here and think it's a great value. The gorgonzola steak is great, as is the linguine with clams and all of their specials. I actually prefer this place to Justin's where the food isn't that great and overpriced. Oh, and the appetizer with baked brie and roasted garlic is delicious!

I met a group of friends at DeJohn's and we were able to get a few tables on the patio, which has a great atmosphere. I had a pomegranate mojito--the "Pamajito"--and it was one of the best mojitos I've ever had. Our waiter was very attentive even though the patio was crowded. We'll definitely be back!

A long time ago, this place used to be good. It used to be one of my favorite places to go, but no so much anymore. I gave it several final, disappointing tries before deciding not to go back because I used to like it so much. The last few times I've been the food was subpar, unoriginal, bland and overpriced. Worse yet, my husband and I ordered our steaks to be cooked medium rare, and they came out cooked well. When we sent them back, something we very rarely do, she confronted us and argued with us that they were medium rare, despite the fact that the steak was grey all the way through. I've never been treated so rudely or had such poor service, and I know what I'm talking about--I waited tables all through college. Save your money and go somewhere else.
