Review from Jean H.
Irvine, CA
Just came back from spending over an hour in this tiny store...
After moving to Irvine, our place seriously needs some chairs for guests when they are over. We have two right now, one for me, one for my hubby. It's sad that we can't invite guests over to dine because of the lack of chairs at home. So after some research on yelp, I drove to Long Beach in search of some great vintage chairs/sofas/stools. I am quite particular about the vintage chairs I want-mod, mid-century, great bright colors, and affordable. I walked around E 4th Street (there are a couple of shops with great reviews on yelp.) Some stores had nice chairs/sofas but the prices cost arms and legs! Since we are desperately in need of them for a party at our place, I kept going until I came across the last store on the block...
There is this really sweet little furniture shop with TONS of hip vintage furniture. I don't understand why people write about all these other stores that are pale in comparison to this gem! I peaked around and immediately saw some chairs that I adore and will look good with our guests in them (okay, maybe with me in it!) Now comes second part of the test, I took a deep breath and looked for the price tags. WOW, NOT TOO BAD at all! I mustered up my courage and asked the sales staff about an orange chair in the corner of the room. It turns out he was the owner, and his name is Vincent. Vincent is not your average $$ sucking store owners. He is super friendly (though he's French, no offense to my French friends and comrades or any French reading this) and laid-back. We started chatting, and I ended up helping him clean my chairs (with his dirty sponge, Windex, and tissues.) I should also note that while I was sweating cleaning my chairs (it was such a warm afternoon in Long Beach,) a lady came in asking to cosign. Vincent took a look at the pictures of her products and pointed to her that the Victorian styles didn't fit this street's more modern furniture . He then went on to tell her all these other stores that might be interested. After she thanked him and was leaving, he called her back and recommended some websites for her to try. She kept thanking him, and said it has been a hard day for her. Vincent gave me a super sweet price that I could not refuse, but what's more is that it was just really really great to do biz with someone who was genuine as a person and as a furniture-lover, even to his competition.
Yes, now I am sitting in my cute-orange-mid-century-adorable-mod-sturdy-hip-li ke-new chair. What about my guests? -

Costa Mesa, CA
Deja Vu defiantly knows their stuff.. Unfortunately they didn't have a dinette set with six chairs. But they had the coolest selection of mid-century and art deco furniture and art. Redecorating can be fun but it is also a bloody pain sometimes. It sucks when you run across what you want and it is either A) the wrong color B) wrong measurements or C) way too over priced. I didn't feel that things were over priced here. The guy that was there was very helpful and I will be coming back soon to check again if they have the perfect table and credenza and shag rug that I am in hunt for.

Long Beach, CA
Deja Vu is a real treasure trove of unique and amazing mid-century finds.
It's clear that the merchandise is handpicked with an extreme eye for uniqueness, form and function - you will not find lots of cast-off generic 60's industrial office chairs, or even your old Eames armshells. That is too easy.
To give you an idea of the apparent care with which they select their merchandise, they have a Pierre Paulin Oyster chair - try finding THAT on eBay or Craiglist - you won't. It is iconic but rare and hasn't been knocked off. They have a Nisse Stringen mini-wall shelf system - those only retail in Europe (like for the last 60 years). A Peter Pepper patio sofa, that was anonymous-looking-but-so-cool was featured in the Palm Springs episodes of Mad Men. No, I swear I'm not affiliated but I just LOVE pretty much everything Deja Vu chooses to carry.
What makes me appreciate the store even more is Vincent, the owner. He's soft-spoken, friendly, knows a TON about mid century furniture and is happy to share his knowledge. However, his demeanor is not at all pushy, and he will often let you know he can work out a better price if a piece has been there a little while. Also, I always feel like I can try out the furniture to my heart's content without feeling like a proprieter is eyeing me warily - Vincent seems happy to see his customers at ease. This place really makes me want to go out of my way to spend money HERE and not anywhere else.
Re their website: it doesn't have the entire store inventory on it - definitely go in person!
Update 3/6/2011: This store continues to be an amazing gem in Long Beach - I keep coming back and I keep finding fairly priced, beautiful and unique pieces that I can't get out of my head (and then they come home with me....). J'aime Deja Vu LB!
