Got a GolfNow deal for $40 p/player with cart and lunch, so figured get it in while our "winter" was on hiatus. Played here on Saturday and we were pleasantly suprised.

Played as only a two-some and although we seemed to wait for the two-some (who the marshall asked us to join on 11) ahead of us on every shot, we still finished in 4:15 after a 9:22 tee time...a four+ hour round is hard to find these days!

The course was actually in great shape. There was one green, maybe #7, where there were serious ball-mark repair damage on the front of the green but by and large we had no complaints maintenance-wise. We tipped it up (only 6200 anyhow) and although it's seriously short, I still found myself hitting a variery of shots into greens but mostly wedges of varying yardages.

Of the three in the area, I'd still prefer Roddy but Deer Ridge would be my #2 easily over Shadow Lakes. The course is fun, challenging and in great shape and very affordable.

Executive Summary:  Play the course you're on, even if it's a decent course with good variety and a few jerks on staff.

    Details:

Well, I really like this course.  Of the "Brentwood trifecta" (Roddy Ranch, Deer Ridge and Shadow Lakes), Deer Ridge comes in behind Roddy but well in front of Shadow Lakes in my mind.  I find the course a good challenge, the variety from hole to hole is refreshing and keeps us from getting bored (unlike, say, Diablo Creek...yawn).  Greens are generally consistent and read true...although like most municipals around here, there are always at least two greens in need of more attention.

There are difficult holes, strategic holes, and holes that reward smart course management.  Carts and facilities are well maintained as far as I can tell from my several rounds here.

There is NO real driving range - just a 130 yd. shorty range to chip and the like.  Green fees and rates are friendly and value-oriented, especially if you find a http://Golfnow.com discount.  I feel there is good value for the dollar here relative to other East Bay options.

What is the downside?  Staff.  Simply put, there are some real a**holes working here.  Now, that whole thing about one bad apple is certainly true - I've had great interaction with several of the older staff on course and in the pro shop here.  But there are a couple jerks here who either view DR as their own private fiefdom (and they deign to grant you the privilege to play there), or they're racist, or they're just unqualified to be working in customer service.  No, I'm not a regular here.  But I'm still paying you money and I generally would hope to be treated like a human being.  This snotty attitude is normally found at bad private clubs - and I've NEVER had issues like this at Roddy.

In addition, there is an odd idiosyncracy at Deer Ridge I've not run into at other local courses - both ground crew and marshals like to stop three feet from you at the tee box - while you're teeing off - to watch you.  Three feet.  I'm not kidding.  Again, it's a customer service issue in my mind.  Unless you're giving us the chance to win money, we're not looking for a gallery.

So maybe the next time I choose from the "Brentwood trifecta" I know where I'm favoring.  Which would be a pity - because DR is really a nice course.  But in this economy, we vote with our wallets and our feet.  I hope they make some changes in the way they treat golfers here - and I'm willing to give them a few more tries to see how things progress.  But to be honest, I'm not hopeful.

I played this course for a yearly golf tournament. This was the 1st year our group tried this course.

The course was well maintained and the greens were challenging. It was a good time had by all.

Minus one star because the Marshall was up our ass to hurry all morning long yet we were the fastest ones and finished first. He did help me look for my lost ball once but because he was on our ass most of the time, it wasn't as fun as it usually is at other courses.

I would go back but next time I'll tell the Marshall to get off our balls and let us play.

Played a full 18 holes today, weather was perfect, the pace a little slow especially on the back nine. We got stuck behind a three-some, but finished the round well under 4 hours. Note the practice area is great for chips & putts, not so much for long iron & driver shots (only about 150 yards).

    I'm conflicted. 3.5 stars
The course is awesome, weather was great, wind was light AND it only cost $20 to play (Including a cart! A special was sent out at the last minute.  Get on their email list!). So why the 3.5 stars?

SPIDER WEBS.  They were everywhere...on the course, on our carts, bags, floating in the air, on homeowner's backyard fences.  If it weren't for the spiderwebs everywhere, I'd give them FIVE STARS.  It was so bad, I found three on me alone, 4 more in the cart, and at least one on my husband.  Even walking to your ball you'd feel spider webs on your face and arms.  Yes, I may have played on the day of Halloween, but I didn't think I'd get the full Halloween experience.

3.5 stars, round up to 4.

Paid $30 with cart via golfnow on Saturday afternoon (2:08 pm teetime).

Overall, the course was pretty fun to play.  The pace was pretty good as we finished at 6pm.  Unfortunately, it was still 101 degrees at 6pm, and nice cool 63 degrees at 7:20 pm in San Francisco when we came back.

Plus for a relatively cute cart girl, but a minus for a range.  They have one of those where you hit into a net, which I don't really like... even that was broken, so only the "chipping" range was available.  Good thing we came in early as we had enough time to eat and drive over to Shadow Lakes where they have a full range.

The course featured some interesting holes, but I didn't feel like it was GREAT.  But to be honest, I might have a different opinion if it was 25 degrees cooler.  So maybe I'll try this or Shadow Lake in the fall.

You can play this course cheap when you sign up for online rates.

Great course. I would give it a 5, if it had a driving range. It has a 75 yard chipping area, but no range. You can drive across the street to Shadow Lakes, but I would rather stay where I play.

Is a challenging course from tee to green. Can play short and long. Not a driver for a long hitter on every hole. I often use an iron. Green are kept in good shape and the fairways cut well.

This to me is a better course than Shadow.

Friendly staff. Hmmm, previous yelp in 2010 mentions nets for the driving range weren't available - well it's 2011 and they still aren't available. That's a minus in my book and the other area for warming up was pretty bad if you like lumpy funky mats. I don't understand why such a nice club like this doesn't invest in upgrading the practice areas. Pace was slow. It took 5.5 hours to play including watching the foursome in front of us getting pretty wasted on the back 9 to the point that one guy threw his club into the weeds and the other guys used their cart to push the other cart (that had its brakes set) over to them - oh and did I mention them spitting lugis in the tee box? Glad I wasn't using those tees. Nice course despite the other stuff. I would have given it a higher rating if they had a decent driving range and mats.

If you don't mind playing the first 15 holes thru a neighborhood, you'll love this course....if there were no homes, it would be a 5 star. Great conditions, challenging, fairly priced (join their e-club for really good pricing here and at their sister course Shadow Lakes). The 3 closing holes are incredible- among my top 3 golf holes anywhere. Their weekend twilight rates make the long drive out here worth it, and the pace of play here is usually 4:30 or less. Not super long, but a real test for even the single digit handicappers. Enjoy.

Nice golf course. Very challenging and always well groomed. Pay no attention to the guys working at the register as they pay you none either. Just another golfer I guess.  No worries. Good course though.

Nice course in Brentwood. Green fees were  $75 on the weekend. In general, the course is on the shorter side (under 6,000 from the blues), but well layed out where every hole has some interest. Fairways and greens were kept in good condition. On the down side, there's a lot of area that is marked as "environmental hazard" and if your ball lands in these areas - tough luck. General facilities were nice and the food at the club house was good at a reasonable price.
