This place received 5 stars from me because of:
Great location -- it's right next to Asilomar state park, which is a fantastic place to watch the sunrise or sunset; it's also a five minute drive to the Monterey Bay Aquarium.
Awesome free breakfast -- Kashi oatmeal, Yoplait yogurt, Seattle's Best Coffee and more!
Connected --Free Wi-Fi in every room
Value - excellent Price compared to nearby hotels.
Clean -- Our room was spacious, clean and had a little balcony.

Things that the Deer Haven Inn is:
- conveniently located to the Asilomar camp grounds/beach
- nearish to the little town and aquarium

Things that the Deer Haven Inn is NOT;
- contrary to some adds, this is NOT a B&B
- fancy or really worth the price (145+ a night)
- organized, they didnt have our reservation on file and tried to double charge us.

I stayed here because some friends of mine got married on the beach nearby. It was really the only hotel around and it had to do. It wasnt anything I would ever seek out since the amenities are slim to none. If you're considering staying in Monterey area, try some place closer to the downtown area.

Stayed in room 121, with one king size bed and a fireplace, upstairs, and the only room with a view of the ocean...The place was clean, and I loved the gas fireplace, but the walls were a tad thin, and the old pipes would knock like crazy everytime the room next door would turn on the water...not all that peaceful when they wake up at 7am to take a shower and you want to sleep in.  I have no idea if the knocking pipes can be heard from other rooms (my bf had stayed here before and mentioned there were not knocking pipes in the room he was in), and if it werent for the lack of a couple hours sleep due to the noise I would have given this place 4 stars without hesitation.

Things to know before you go:

-The sheets, blankets, and comforter were also a little too thin for the chilly central coast evenings...I would definitely recommend asking for an extra blanket from the front desk before calling it a night...they dont provide you with extra blankets or pillows in the room without requesting them.

Stayed at Deer Haven on Oct. 3-4, by a good rate recommendation from a friend. In 2002, we used the same place for a friend/family reunion, with no problems. Great location for the Asilomar Beach, and close to a favorite restaurant, The Fishwife.

Anyway, our room was ok, and I mean, just ok with a small o. We had room 103. I would stay there again, but I know what I'm getting. Room 103 has an electric fireplace, that sort of works, but the electrical connections are worn (needs to be replaced) due to a thermal heat electric problem with the connection. You can run the fireplace but if you shut it off, the contacts need to be reconnected, ie. maintenance person has to fiddle with the connections. Kind of like a car with a bad starter.  In all of the rooms, the heat lamps in the bathrooms have been replaced with flood fluorescent bulbs not because they actually work to supply radiant heat, but to save money and look like a radiant heat lamp as opposed to an empty socket.  Hey, it gets cold in the morning.

Breakfast was limited- coffee, juice, yogurt and bread/cereal items set up in the small lobby.  It would be nice if they had some fruit and a hot breakfast in the morning. Then again, there are wonderful cafes in Pacific Grove and Monterey to find a morning meal, so it's not a big deal.

I overheard other guests with maintenance problems in their rooms. Mine seemed much smaller in comparison. Guests in #322 had cockroaches. Another guest had a room with a toilet that didn't flush very well. The same gentleman who fixed the fireplace to work with broken connections was trying to address these problems, but I just wonder how much can be fixed with a cheap roll of electrical tape. Staff was very friendly, even though there were numerous complaints from guests, which I'm sure they heard before.

I might stay there again, but there are better choices to be had. Would I recommend? Maybe with some caveats and if there wasn't much else. Pricewise, it was fine. Qualitywise, it is another case of you get what you pay for. Things need to repaired at this place, and I suspect the owner is probably being too cheap.  Alright.

Ok, so we were looking for a place to stay in Monterey for a few days, but everything we found was either a boring chain or close to the beach and significantly more expensive. We wanted to stay as close as possible to the beach so my search expanded to Pacific Grove and I came across the Deer Haven Inn & Suites.

We chose the Deer Haven over a couple of other choices in Pacific Grove because some of their rooms had full kitchens or kitchenettes. The best deal I could find ended up being through Deer Haven's website so I booked a queen suite with a full kitchen for three nights and ended up paying $80/night.

The place is within walking distance to the beach... A short walk through the Asilomar Conference Grounds as others have mentioned here. The queen suite is pretty sweet too... It's like a small apartment: you walk in to the living room, then there's the dining room and kitchen. The rather large bedroom is off the living room to the left and is a separate room with a door.

After our experience with rock hard beds in Santa Barbara on our way up here, we weren't sure what to expect when we turned in for the night. We were pleased with the beds. They weren't bad at all.. certainly comfy enough for a good night's sleep.

The only real negatives are that the walls and ceiling seem to be pretty thin.. whoever was upstairs made a lot of noise. It sounded like they were jumping around, letting golf balls bounce on the floor, etc. It wasn't a constant problem, but annoying for the hour or so it went on, until I went upstairs and asked them to keep it down.

Other pluses include a free wifi and free daily continental breakfast from 7AM - 10AM, featuring bagels, bread/toast, donuts, cereal, oatmeal, OJ, some sort of mango tropical juice, coffee, hot chocolate and milk.

Parking was also a plus... the queen suite included an assigned, covered parking space, but we were able to park right outside our window on the street.

This is a great location when visiting the Monterey Bay area... conveniently located and only minutes from all of the local attractions like Fisherman's Wharf, the aquarium, Carmel, the 17 Mile Drive, Cannery Row, etc.

for the price, this is a great deal. We paid $79 a night, it was a special rate, but i think they offer it pretty regularly.

there are some rooms in a row next to the office, they look like your typical motel type thingy, but we got rooms that were basically studio apartments, they have several buildings of these rooms on the property. it even came with a parking space below the room.

the decor i would describe as inexpensive gaudy. not tacky, however. just a little over the top. the comforter and curtains were the same gold brocade pattern, and there were tons of pillows. The kitchen is complete, with dishes included, and a small bar-height table.

the bedside lamps did not operate separate from the overhead lights, which was a bit annoying. there was another lamp farther away from the bed that i used that was separate from the bright overhead light when i read and my bf was asleep, it was unplugged by the maid both times we went in.

there is shampoo and shower gel, but it is not provided in those disposable bottles, it was in a dispenser on the wall in the shower.

the hot tub was a bit hard to find, i wouldn't have known it was there except that i read about it on yelp! the bubbles only worked for a few minutes, then they stopped, which was fine. You have to get a separate key from the front desk for the hot tub gate.

i'm pretty sure they accept dogs, as i saw a few people who were checking out who had dogs. the lady at the front desk was friendly and helpful, we got lost on our way there. they have someone at the front desk 24 hours, which is nice. there are a ton of promotional flyers for local restaurants and sight-seeing things you can do on the peninsula in the lobby area.

the complimentary breakfast was really good. there wasn't anything cooked to order, but there was juice, milk, cereal, yogurt, tea, hot chocolate, donuts, muffins bagels and toasters, etc. There are two small cement tables next to the front office, where the food is served, but no other real place to eat. many people just took their breakfast back to their rooms on a tray.

there were numerous deer grazing around, there is a empty lot across the street where we saw several.

Overall, i like the city a lot, probably more than carmel. there are tons of pine trees, it is small and the people are friendly.

While certainly not an elegant hotel, Deer Haven Inn makes for a great weekend getaway spot amid the wildlife and aromatic trees. The complimentary morning breakfast (pastries, Seattle's Best coffee, Tazo tea, cereal, yogurt, apples) is more than enough until lunchtime. It is right across from Asilomar Conference Grounds, which you can quickly walk through to get to Asilomar Beach for relaxation and hiking.

Parking was no problem in early afternoon, though by the following morning I noticed that every space was taken. I suspect the $49 rate got people into their rooms in a hurry, especially with the unusual warm weather. The walk into Pacific Grove downtown is about 30 minutes, and though it was a bit far, I felt completely safe and simply admired the variety of homes (and deer!) along the way.

This is probably the worst place my husband and I have ever stayed. We had heard this was more of a B&B type inn, but we were definitly told wrong. The beds were very uncomfortable! We had two queen beds, one of which squeeked and wobbled not to mention the large dip in the matress as if someone laid in the same exact spot for years. The other bed was hard, although felt more stable on the frame. Lastly, I have a 9 month old baby and I had to wait several minutes for the water to warm up enough for him to take a bath and to warm up his food in the evening. In the morning the temperature of the water warmed up much faster. We will never stay here again, I did not feel their cleanliness was very good and it was not a comfortable stay. We considered leaving about an hour after we checked in, but since it was a holiday weekend it would have been difficult to get a room elsewhere without reservations.

We stayed in a king suite for one night here recently.  The location of this place is fabulous--across the street from Asilomar and a quick walk to the beach.  We found the staff at the front desk to be very welcoming and helpful, although they were intent on convincing us to go out to dinner at the Fishwife restaurant (walking distance to the hotel and you get a free appetizer coupon when you check in).  The suite had its own assigned covered parking spot and was in a building separate from the main hotel.

The suite itself looked like it had been recently remodeled.  Although the decor was not something I would have picked, it worked and the place looked clean and was in good shape.  The suite had a kitchen with a stove, microwave, and fridge.  It was supplied with dishes for 2, a few utensils, salt and pepper, pots and pans.  To cook anything more than reheated take-out you would probably want to bring a few of your own basics like cooking oil, a knife, etc.  But it was nice to have option to prepare some food and not have to eat out.  The bathroom was very clean and the shower had a nice dispenser with bath gel, shampoo, and conditioner.

Our main complaint with the suite was the very thin walls.  We could hear everything going on in the rooms next to ours including a couple arguing in the middle of the night.  Earplugs drowned it out and we were glad we had brought them.  The bed was pretty new and in good shape, but was very firm to the point that we woke up a bit sore and stiff.  With regards to the thin walls and the bed, the suite was more like a typical motel room.

The continental breakfast was somewhat better than the average hotel with Seattle's Best Coffee, Tazo tea and Starbucks cocoa, juice, fruit, yogurt, bagels, and pastries.  When we checked out the staff helped us get directions to our next destination.  Overall, given that the price we paid for the suite was significantly lower than most prices for motel-type rooms in worse locations in the Monterey area, we got a lot for our money and our stay was more positive than negative.

I stayed with you for 2 nights and thanks to your bowy bed my hubby and I both have back pains today.  We stayed patient with your crabby services from day one.  We didn't feel welcome to your Inn nor we felt comfortable.  I told you about the noise we were hearing but you told me the service man didn't hear anything.  Maybe it's your water heater maybe it's your pipes.  I don't know what it was but I woke up multiple times throughout the night during my precious vacation time.  Your showerhead was way too low I could not shower without bending my knees down.  The water pressure of the shower to ridiculously low I had to struggle to get the foam off my hair and body and I'm not that tall.  Thanks to this experience we cancelled the third night as you know.  We just could not bear the paint and sorrow we were feeling at your Inn.

My husband and I had a wonderful one-night stay here and had none of the negative experiences of the previous reviewer. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful, the room was cozy and clean (even though we were in one of the slightly older rooms), and we loved the amenities like the fireplace, the nice spa products, the tasty selection of treats at breakfast, in-room Seattle's Best coffee, etc etc. It was all very charming and we loved the location, just a block from the ocean in Pacific Grove, away from the touristy mess of Monterey. And for all this we paid well under $100. Check out http://Tripadvisor.com for other, more positive reviews.

We've stayed at several Moonstone properties and always had a good experience. This one's all right as far as motels go, but not on par with their other places. It's a row-type motel with the windows facing the parking lot [there are some nice trees but it would be such a killer view if they'd do up the rooms so the windows were on the ocean side]. Bed was fine though on one of those cheap frames which drive me nuts [Chad's a fidgeter]. Plenty of pillows but the blankets were chintzy. The second-floor walkway could use some insulating mats, passersby make the room shake. Bathroom needs new paint, ceiling is peeling. Sink tap had issues with making hot [our shower was fine]. Gas fireplace and gas heater both have electric thermostats so were unusable when the storm knocked the power out. Finally, we were not offered any kind of apology/discount for current or future stay when we checked out even though we spent the entire last morning without heat & power. I realize the storm was not their fault but saying "sorry our product did not live up to your expectations for any reason" is standard good customer service.
