I would give Deep Ellum 10 stars if I could! Over the past two months I have gone to Deep Ellum for brunch almost every weekend;that's how amazing this place is. The first time I was brought here by my boyfriend I was told the breakfast burrito/chimichanga(depending on how your arteries are feeling) would blow my mind, and oh it did. A crispy tortilla stuffed with homemade sausage, eggs, cheese, jalapeno peppers, and hot sauce... I can't express in words how utterly fantastic this meal is. After that first brunch Deep Ellum I have not been able to order anything else. Every Sunday I go in and tell myself I'm going to peruse the menu, try something new....and then the sight of a piping hot chimi, filled will spicy cheesy gooiness, pulls me back in.
In addition to the amazing food, Deep Ellum had one of the best handcrafted bloody marys I have ever had. Just the right combo of ingredients, with an amazing addition touch... get ready for this....they garnish this drink with a homemade pickled green bean!
Unique and deliciously enthralling beyond the power of typed text, Deep Ellum is brunch crack.

This is one of my favorite bars. For any time of the day. I'm usually there for lunch during the week, when it's nice and quiet, or brunch on the weekend, for my breakfast chimichanga fix. Love them. The combination of scrambled eggs, cheese, homefries, and some really good sausage. I'm not even a sausage kind of girl, but I can't get enough of it.

I'm never disappointed by their beer, and I rarely venture to their cocktail list. But I do love me some gin, and I'm a fan of each of the gin cocktails I've tried there.

I've read some reviews on less-than-stellar experiences with the bartenders and servers, but they've always been friendly and helpful, maybe because I'm rarely there on busy nights.

There are stretches of time where I frequent this place on a weekly basis, and it's definitely one of my default bars that keeps me coming back again and again.

Deep Ellum has a small menu, but everything on it is very good. The burger is super good, and i usually get that or the meaty italian Big Easy. The wait staff is pretty hipster, and sometimes can be a little flaky on service, especially on a busy night.

The place has a good amount of booths/tables inside, but there's also just as much seating outside on the deck. This place is either completely empty, or overfilled with people. I've been a couple dozen times, and it's never a comfortable amount of people. They play great music, and there's usually a lively, but not obnoxious, crowd.

Their beer list will put your knowledge to the test. I consider myself to know a decent amount of beers, having tried many many different imports and domestics. But when i come to deep ellum, I don't know what ANY of the beers are. It's constantly changing, and i've found some really awesome beers there. However, pretty much no matter what you order will be $7-8. Which is a pricey way to try new beers.

But the real reason i like Deep Ellum is their specialty cocktails. They have a pretty extensive list of old-school drinks. I've found a whole handful of new drinks/drink ideas that have now become some of my favorite drinks.

So basically: Lively crowds, great food, awesome cocktails, rare beers and microbrews, and a nice big patio out back. It's one of my favorite bars in Boston.

What is this, a converted mini-mart or some shit? Hey, I'm not asking for a place the size of a fucking JAI ALAI court, but, shit, you could barely get off a game of FOUR-SQUARE in here after hours. I'm certainly not taking the whole crew here for a few, it would be like a clown car. But it's alright for an after-hours one-on-one tipple.

And what happened to the OLD name? "Movie bar" or some shit? It had a film reel in it. "Deep Ellum" sounds like a goddamn crayola color or something.

I've been here more than a few times and it's always been great.  The food is exceptional and the drink selection is tops.
The place is kind of small, and it can be rather crowded on busy nights; seating is limited too, but no worries.  It's totally worth the wait.

It is a rather dimly lit, but it adds to the atmosphere.
In the summer, the patio out back makes for good times.

I think that Deep Ellum is the best place to get an imported beer, in Boston, hands down.

Additionally, their food is pretty top notch for bar food. They make their own pretzels, and the mustard dipping sauce is divine.

I'm over the crowd there, though.  They are pretentious, and make me feel self conscious because I don't have an awesome hipster haircut.

I'm starting to wonder if they know that it's a beer house, and not a safe haven for people with bad hair.

First to get the bad out of the way:

It's in Allston (which means bad haircuts, hipster doofuses (doofi?), ugly plaid, people that don't understand a giant backpack only takes MORE room if you refuse to take it off -- ever).

It is TINY -- (hence the aforementioned backpack issue). You will be pushed...stuff will be spilled (happened to us twice -- neither time our fault)

Now, the GOOD.

Prices.  The food is pretty damned cheap. I was a little surprised at this and very pleasantly so since the quality is good as far as pub grub goes. Some highlights:

The burger: Seriously tasty -- good meat, good bacon, good swiss. (My friend had this).

The best wurst plate -- The sausage was savory and meaty without being at all greasy. I didn't like sides.

Salad -- poached egg on fresh greens with tasty apples and bacon. NOM.

Truffled Gorgonzola fries: Still could taste the truffle over the gorgonzola. That is pretty impressive since gorgonzola is so very strong.

Fancy charcuterie plate for pretty little money. (My companions loved this).

Soft, not overly salted pretzels with GOOD beer cheese :) You can definitely taste the beer which is a total win.

The real winners though were the cocktails:

1. El Diablo -- taco seasoned salt rim (yum!) with smoky mezcal and terkillya. Tasty margarita indeed!

2. The aviation -- I love this drink and get it at almost every fancy cocktail places I go. This was mixed properly without the heavy hand on the maraschino liqueur that can make this drink go from awesome to floor cleaner in a hurry.

3. Old Tom Collins -- tart and refreshing!

4. The Germination -- lots of places use St. Germaine now. I love the stuff. However, too many use it like a limitless amount makes your drink better. It doesn't, It just makes it sticky sweet. That wasn't the case here. It provided a nice hint of sweet and floral to some very good gin (I subbed Old Raj for whatever they used for the usual -- yeah it cost more, but totally worth it).

Over all, I would come back here since I had a very good time. Friday night might not be the best option since it was MOBBED, but I will definitely be back.

As far as I can tell, every guy on Yelp is on Yelp to pull the abundance of easy..-going ladies on Yelp. Which brings me to my next review.

To me Deep Ellum is the perfect example of the perfect bar soured by avoidable douchebaggery. What I refer to is of course the wait staff, who perhaps because they are trying to be hipster or perhaps because it's in Allston, prefer to serve their customers with the same treatment as I would serve Karl Rove at a colonoscopy. If i was a trained medical professional, of course.

Other than that, the food is good, however sometimes unreliable, as to the still-frozen pretzel once served. But really the mainstay here is the beer. They have done just a great job pulling together an ever-updating list of fantastic beer of all styles from all the world. But the best part-- even with the abundance of hipsters that Allston brings, they've managed to keep PBR off the menu. And for that in itself, hats off to Deep Ellum.

I'll never drink here again. After a heavy night of drinking at home we thought we'd check this place out. I loved the beer selection and the atmosphere but when i went to buy a couple of beers i handed the bartender $100. He gave me back change as if i had handed him $20 and i put it in my pocket after tipping him and didnt really look. When i went back to the bar i noticed what had happened and said to him only for him to start laughing in my face and say "Oh yeah thats right".

You are a scumbag and i hope you get haemmerrhoids

I normally wouldn't toss in a review when the place already has almost 300, but i had to comment on how great the drinks are at this place. The service was a bit blase- maybe it's the hispter allston factor that y''all are referring to- but the food and drinks were great.

I'm not in the Allston area all that often, but it's worth a trip just to check out the cocktails. I had a chartruse flavored martini and it was marvelous.

I can't comment on how packed it gets- I went with a friend on a random afternoon/early evening, but i can imagine that the place gets mobbed because it's so tiny!

Deep Ellum has everything you could want from a good bar. I almost don't want to let anyone know about it. Upon arrival we were politely told they had reached capacity and to wait. I think to myself, so they don't pack them in, good sign.

Inside the positive vibes continue. Atmosphere was relaxed and friendly. I loved the decor with the huge longhorn on top of the bar and the fans on pulley system (particularly interesting touch).

The bar had an unique beer selection, with knowledgeable and attentive bar staff. I'm a big fan of Leffe, so they recommended a local beer called PRETTY THINGS "JACK D'OR" -- it was exactly what I was looking for! Food was good too, with an eclectic selection, from southern to German. I'm usually not a big fan of German food, but their THE BEST WURST PLATE was tasty. All-in-all, a great night out. I'll definitely be a regular.

Really enjoyed this bar in a college town minus the college kiddies.  It has a great outdoor patio and on a warm night, a fruity beer goes down so perfectly.  Actually, there are a lot of beers but I'm too big of a wuss to try them.  For appetizers, they have a "fries done four ways" thing on the menu which makes you think that for one price, you get at least two but the price is per style.  I split the fries with parmesan and truffle mayo ($6) and even though it looks as if you're getting ripped off, it was quite delicious.  Closes at 11pm on weeknights.

What a hole in the wall. We actually walked past it twice before we realized that we had finally arrived at our destination - Deep Ellum.

After 10 PM on a Saturday night, especially an abnormally warm night like the one we went on, this place was packed and noisy. But I liked the vibe of the people hanging out; my girl friend and I almost immediately made friends with the guy with a full tattoo sleeve and another in a full suit sitting next to us at the bar, whom we began debating the merits of geothermic energy over amazing drinks. Moscow Mules, what?! Points also awarded for making a Tom Collins with fresh lemon juice so it's perfectly tart, not sweet. Drinks are a little more on the pricey side, but worth it for the quality.

A bit of a snag in ordering our drinks off the bat; the bar seemed a little understaffed and I was getting frustrated in getting the bartender's attention, even though I was sitting directly in front of her while she tided up the bar. However, once I got a tab started she warmed up a bit.

After all that talk of sustainability, we felt like a bit of a nosh and ordered the pretzels and beer cheese. Amaaaaaaazing, just what I wanted, couldn't get enough - a return visit is needed for further indulgence in their menu and beer selection.

I really don't even know where to begin on describing how much I adore this place... The freakin awesome selection of beer, the sexy/cool atmosphere, the phenomenal food?! Everything about DE makes me feel warm & fuzzy. Love the patio space too..
I've come here the past three Sundays in a row for brunch (among countless other times for dinner/drinks) & am never disappointed. Smother me in their duck confit with rabbit sausage & bread pudding any day of the week... wash it all down with a Jack D'Or.
This place has been within walking distance of my last two apartments.. I dare say I almost never want to leave the area just for this place.

This bar is two different places during the day and the night. It is my FAVORITE bar during the day-big windows, back patio, not crowded, craft beers, and a somewhat old school French cafe vibe. It is perfect for relaxing and getting a slow day drunk on. The food is negligible.. actually, it's pretty bad.

At night, this place sucks a donkey's dick that is sucking on another donkey's dick. The joint is small, and it gets PACKED. It will take you an eon to get a drink from the bartenders who basically don't give a shit. The bartenders are ok. Yes they make old-school drinks, but not particularly well. By the time you get it, the last one will have worn off. You will probably not have a place to sit and end up standing in the line of foot traffic.

Came here for lunch with a friend... and I was very excited I could still order their breakfast items on a week day, at like noon. I could eat breakfast food for every meal - love it.

I opted for the Deep Ellum Breakfast Burrito: 2 scrambled eggs, pepper jack cheese, onions, tomatoes, spicy sausage, an and some hot sauce in a flour tortilla. Very tasty. Sometimes it could be a bit hard to cut... so it wasn't the most pretty thing to look at while I was slicing and dicing to eat it, but I figure it's all going to the same place anyway, how pretty it looks when it gets there is unimportant.

If I'm in the area, I'd def go back for some food... and next time I'd like to try their dinner menu. I have my eye on a few items... *licks lips*

Great drinks Friendly bartenders...my only advice Is make sure Max Toste or Dave Cagle is making your drinks...it just taste better when they make it, I don't know why...The other bartenders are great but it just doesnt taste as good

Must try
Tommy noble(great pimms flavor)
Louisiana manhattan(tell them to use Rye1 or Sazerac instead of Overholt!
Bohannan sp? (for the true chartreuse lovers/ house made swedish punsch)
El Diablo(smokey mezcal and spicy agave )
Old Tom Collins ( they use old tom gin very rare...VERY GOOD)
Old Fashioned (They use luxardo marasca cherries yummm)

Overall Deep Ellum is a great bar.  The bar is small/dark/packed all the time. its like a High Class Dive Bar...i dont know if thats possible but thats what Deep Ellum is.

cheers

This is probably the most hyped and talked about "spot" in the area.  And thats all it is, hype.  Dont get me wrong, its a decent watering hole, but the drinks are very expensive, its ALWAYS crowded in there, its always about 20 degrees hotter than it should be (year round)  and the patio closes early.  This place needs to be about 10 feet wider.. i can't seem to walk to the bathroom without falling over everyone.

Other than that, the drinks are good and the servers/bartenders are usually pretty friendly.

Ate a late breakfast here today, we sat out on the deck.  That was great.  My favorite part was the wood burning oven and the great smell it provided the entire meal.

Our service was nothing to write home about, but it wasn't bad by any means.  Mimosas were good.  My meal was excellent.  I got the salmon plate, the fish was delicious, the bagel was soft, hot and tasty.  There were good veggies and decent cream cheese.  I'll be back soon.

A beer pro I know told me that I had to hit up Deep Ellum to experience some great draft beers. It took me some time, but I finally got there last night. Its a small place and quite loud inside. However, they have a cute little patio area that I really enjoyed! It was crowded and the server took forever to bring everything from our beer to our check. However, the drinks were good and the food was decent.

The menu has a large selection of beer but they had some great cocktails too. Next time around I'm going to work my way through that part of the menu!

I've been here twice for beers, and the simple, yet retardedly delicious soft pretzel served with beer cheese.

Based on these booze fueled times, I literally thought that's just about all they had to offer.

That is until I went there today and realized the following..

- They have a drink menu that would make Marliave (love that place btw) or Drink (incredibly overrated) jealous. It's now my mission to try every one on the drink menu, liver be dammed. Still though, I don't see it happening, considering that they serve MOSCOW MULES!
Holy shit, they've got Moscow Mules. Unbelievable. Do yourself a favor and get one.

- They also serve quite possibly the tastiest, crispiest, juiciest wings I've ever had. Yeah, I know. Sure. Wings are just kind of a throwaway app, but I'd be happy with these as just a meal.  Not TOO greasy, and very meaty. I was very impressed.

- A pretty decent, well priced menu.
My lovely gal nommed down a burger that looked to be cooked to perfection, and I had what equated to a Muffaletta sandwich (Italian cold cuts, Italian cheeses, chopped olive spread on a tasty, buttery roll) and both were succulent.

- An outdoor patio.
Granted, those two prior times I was here, I was bombed and probably didn't even realize it WAS here, but it's very nicely put together and perfect to sit out on an a nice Summery Sunday afternoon like today.

- Attentive staff.
Who in the hell expects prompt water refills at a bar/restaurant that's more bar than it is restaurant? I sure as shit don't. Granted, that's probably because I've become jaded from terrible service when I dine out (I'm looking in your direction, terrible Charlie's Kitchen) but let's just say I was pleasantly surprised.

I love this place, and I wish I had a place like it near me in the 'burbs.
My co-workers (and OOOOH, SANDBOX CELEBRITIES!) Fletcher and  Special Ed of the Sandbox (Mornings on WFNX 101.7. Yeah, it's a plug) are lucky bastards to have it right down the street from them.

Oh, and why not 5 stars if I loved it so much?

- Good luck finding a parking spot, ever.
- I mean, it's in Allston. Unless you're Brazilian or a College kid or my aforementioned co-workers, why in the hell would you ever go to Allston?

Quite possibly the only reason (besides the Grasshopper) I miss Allston, Ellum is a little too packed at times and the music can be too loud to sustain a conversation - but the beer, food, and service is outstanding enough to make me come back as much as possible.

The beer selection is always impressive as the bar staff and the new patio is incredible.

The drinks are a little pricey too but if you want cheap drinks - go to the Model next door. Ellum is more classy than that and usually has a better crowd too.
See you there. Unless you're a weirdo or something - then leave me be.

Three words: Bloody. Effing. Mary.

Holy crap, their Bloody Marys are spectacular. The perfect hair-of-the-dog (or not) accompaniment to an unbelievable breakfast burrito. Let it be known that I could put horseradish on just about anything, but there's more to this Mary than heat. Have you ever had a pickled green bean in a Blood Mary? I have. It's freaking fantastic.

So, brunch is awesome, but I really like this place at night, too. They have a great beer list, and the scene is hip without being too sceney (a common problem in this area).

I don't come here enough.

I had a really bad breakfast here, I was stunned actually at how someone could f' up biscuits so badly.  My friend said his Reuben and fries were pretty good, so I could give this place 2 stars. But the fact that I waited forever for a bad breakfast brings it back down. I ordered biscuits and sausage gravy with a side of scrambled eggs plus a side of bacon. The biscuits were hard outside, nearly raw inside and the gravy was bland as can be with tiny pieces of sausage.  The scrambled eggs were a small portion and looked wet and pitiful.  So far I've spent $8.  The 3 strips of bacon ($3 extra!) were like Oscar Meyer's, mainly fatty, and very underdone. If I'm paying $3 for bacon I want it to be good quality, or at least crispy.  Coffee ($2) was only so so.  So I spent $13 on a bad breakfast and that ticks me off.  The waitress was nice enough but offered me more coffee and then never came back w/the pot.  After asking me how the breakfast was, I came clean about the underdone biscuits.  She apologized and said she wished she'd been over sooner to fix it.  I'm not sure what they could've done to fix it though, aside from get me something else.  Anyway nothing was taken off my bill.  Which I guess made sense since I ate at least half of my really bad meal.  Guess I'll have to bus it 4 hours to get my excellent "Hungry Bear" breakfast fix at Enid's in Greenpoint - warm fluffy biscuits, organic, locally made sausage, well seasoned gravy, and fluffy eggs with a bit of fruit on the side, and it is freakin' delicious.

Cocktail-wise, this place is Eastern Standard's hipster Allston doppelganger. I am a huge fan of the vanilla flip, which has a whole raw egg in it, and their Manhattan selection, which features variations on the Manhattan from certain decades. Their bartenders are genuinely interested in how you like the drinks too, which is a shockingly welcome departure from typical Allston demeanor--the first time we went, my boyfriend ordered the Louisiana benedictine Manhattan, and nearly fell out of his chair when the bartender checked back in to hear his thoughts on the drink.

A hair less expensive than other cocktail bars (ahem), and with way better people watching. Though I love Eastern Standard, I can wear cutoffs here and drink a Sazerac at the same time.

Another Yelp win.  In search of a brunch spot nearby for a quick bite, yelpers offered up advice on hot pretzels with mustard, breakfast burritos, a rockin' beer selection, and an outdoor patio to soak up some serious rays on the first gorgeous day since arriving in Beantown.  They were spot on.

Even knowing where Deep Ellum was, I nearly walked past it - it's not a large storefront.  Stay sharp!

All of the doors and windows were open due to the gorgeous day.  It's not large, and most of the dining room is taken up by a long bar with tap handles for all sorts of delightful, obscure craft and import brews.  If there's one thing I've rapidly learned, it's that Bostonians take their beer extremely seriously.  My Bière de Miel certainly didn't disappoint.

Although my breakfast burrito was pretty solid at its $8 price point, packed with fluffy egg, savory sausage and satisfying potatoes, the boy's duck confit salad was just fine.  Considering that it was nearly double the cost of my burrito at $14, I was expecting a little more "wow" factor.

On a nice day like this, sitting outside on the sunny back patio was exactly what we wanted.  And that's exactly what we did when invited to pick any seat we wanted.  Combine a little sweating with some cooling breezes, a water glass that never ran low and an adorably cute waitress who took great care of us... I couldn't think of a more ideal spot to be on a Saturday morning with the boy.

Gorgonzola truffle fries + vanilla flip cocktail (yes that's raw egg in there, just go with it) + cute back outdoor seating = a great night out. Included as one of the stops on our annual 18-stop Bar Golf for these three reasons. (And no, after about 14 bars/14 shots, surprisingly the raw egg cocktail was not a bad idea... I was a bit concerned, but I assure you it was delicious and had no adverse effects 8)

Quite the outstanding beer, mixed drink and food selection here.

Soft pretzels and a semi-spicy mustard perfect the evening.

Noisy as a metal show.  That's the only drawback. They spin some killer tunes but I like to be able to hear someone four feet away from me.  "What?" "Huh?" "You did what to who?"

Classy for Allston.  I'm sold.

Deep Ellum has single-handedly redeemed the bar scene in Allston, in my opinion. If you're tired of watching bros do shots of Jager in between turns of Big Buck Hunter at Big City or White Horse Tavern, wander down Brighton just a little bit further to the beer sanctuary that is Deep Ellum.

The patio deck is great -- tucked away from the street and small enough to make you feel like you're in on a secret just by being there. The servers are super friendly and check in on you just the right amount. They seem to genuinely like working there and can happily recommend beers and/or munchies.

I've tried the cheese plate, which was awesome -- three types of cheese, including the "red dragon" with mustard seeds, and something called Drunken Goat Cheese. The selection changes daily, though. I also got an order of the vinegar/fleur de sel fries (addictive) and the best wurst plate, which featured a house-made spicy Southwestern style chicken sausage that was phenomenal.

Deep Ellum, I will be back soon...you can count on it.

Named for a section in Dallas, Deep Ellum brings the charm of the south to the New England shores.  The feeling in here is eclectic, and the menu reflects this.  The beer selection is one of the best in Boston.  Don't like beer?  No worries!  There is an amazing cocktail menu.  I strongly recommend the Hemmingway.  Not too sweet or bitter, and the blend of liquids drinks smooth without any harshness.

No good bar stops at the drinks - it includes food, and Deep Ellum does not disappoint.  Think bar pretzels are stale and a little shady to try eating.  DE classes it up by making it Bavarian style with amazing mustard or tantalizing beer cheese dips.  The french onion soup comes in a crock, and it is hardy enough to be a meal.  I was impressed with the cheese platter.  It's a market price because the cheese are from all over.  I was served Blue Cheese, Red Dragon (with stone ground mustard seeds), and an amazing goat cheese.  It's best shared though!

This place is good for a second or third date, but not a first - it gets a bit too noisy during busy hours to really talk.  Try going before 7 for the best atmosphere.

I like this bar - a lot.  It's very cool and laid-back.  Relaxed clientele with a very chill vibe.  Didn't hurt that there were some major cutie patooties here either!  An amazing outside patio is definitely a great amenity to this place.  Fantastic beer variety that will probably have something for everyone.  Their cask beer was particularly good.

I heard a lot about their food but I found it was a bit hit or miss.  I ordered the calamari and buffalo wings and my buddy ordered the wurst and the parm fries.  My calamari was all right but the wings had a really funny taste to them and it was not a good thing.  My buddy's wurst was delicious as were his fries.  They also had a full bbq special going on out on the patio that looked really yummy for $16.  Unfortunately, this glutton had to pass on it...this time around.

My one little gripe was that it was wicked cold out on Tuesday and the damn bouncer kept the door WIDE open.  Everyone sitting at the bar near the entrance was freezing their arses off.  Srsly, close the damn door, bro!

I definitely will be back here.  Great crowd, awesome bartender, great beer.  What more could ya want?

I gotta be serious with you.  Deep Ellum so does not do it for me.  You know, come to think of it, Deep Ellum never really did.  I think I sort of went through the motions of "liking" it and tried to incorporate it into my life.  But, this relationship just was not going anywhere.

Hi Deep,

It's me.  Yeah, you look nice with your bangin' back porch, but you kinda smell.  And, well, I don't like the fact that you don't serve the veggie pasta anymore -- especially in a high Vegetarian neighborhood. I liked the veggie pasta, why don't you wanna give me the veggie one anymore?  You like meat now?  Is meat really better than veggie?

All right, all right,  I tried to give you my time and money.  But, you did not treat me like I need to be treated.  I need to have jelly with my toast.  Hell, I even need to have toast with my toast -- none of this burnt crap sans jelly.  Not good.  I will take the high road and say a farewell to you, Deep, but it hasn't really been real.  It's been surreal and we both knew that this was not going to work out since day one.  Yeah, we tried, we kept up appearances.  But, when it comes down to it, I know what I want and I know what I like.   Deep, I don't want you.  I'm sure there are lots of other people out there for you.  In fact, I might see people lining up for you, but I won't be there.  I'll be at home, on my porch enjoying my pasta the way I like it.

Best,
Melissa M.

Jess P. took me here with promises of sinful sausage-based pleasures. She was right. Housemade sausages and craft beer = Decadent perfection.

For all intents and purposes this place is a very good gastropub. But then it is a heaven for sausage lovers. The devious minds in Deep Ellum's kitchen have put wonderful and often unconventional ingredients into the daily selections of sausages available here for you to buy and then put in your mouth.

Don't even look at the rest of the menu. I'm sure it's good, but really when was the last time you were floored by sausages? I'm just sayin'.

In the summer months, be sure to check out the seating in the outdoor patio in the back. The sky makes pretty colors over your head and the interior can be a little dark.

This remains a favorite spot for me and my omni boyfriend. Even though they don't have tons of vegan options on the menu, the staff are so accomodating and so knowledgeable about veganism that I always feel welcome. The veg version of a bloody mary that they do is one of the best, party all the time in my mouth, things I've ever tasted.

Last week while we were there one of the waitresses came up to me and recommended that I not order french fries since they're cooked in the same oil as the calamari and the chicken - I appreciated that she took the time to make sure that I was comfortable and not eating something that I wouldn't want in my body. High fives, always, to the crew at Deep Ellum.

I *heart* Deep Ellum. Knowing it can be busy on a Friday night I emailed DE and asked if they might set aside a large table for my 33rd birthday. They don't take reservations but were sweet enough to say yes!

They have a great selection of beer and cocktails, although despite that we ended up with a bottle of wine which was equally terrific.  The food is delicious - I almost always get the vegan burger  (I'm not a vegan - but can't pass it up!) and it is the best around.

Great patio and very helpful staff...I finally had that pretzel and it is hot, soft and fantastic!

I will say upfront I don't have much to review because we only had one drink each at this place.  It was a Saturday afternoon and we had already had lunch.  We had read lots of good reviews about this place and decided to stop in since we were right there.  We each got a pretty decent whiskey sour.  The problem with the place was that when we ordered, the waitress acted like we were the biggest alcoholics in the world for ordering whiskey and no food.  I've never been a bar where drinking was judged like that.  It doesn't seem like a good business model.

I went here two nights ago for a friend's going away party from Boston.  I was very skeptical walking in, so bringing this up to a 2 star review, meaning "Meh. I've experienced better." was a stretch I wouldn't have even considered walking in.

I was surprised.  Not all pleasantly, but it was actually an excellent hour or so.

First, we arrived late into the going away event, but they had managed to finagle a corner booth for probably ten people, so that was a plus.

The second my boyfriend and I arrived we were asked for our order.  We didn't have to wait or anything.  The appetizer menu looked promising, but more about that later.

I got Diet Coke.  I realize it's a bar, but it was already late and drinking wasn't for me.  The Diet Coke was approx a 4oz glass, half filled with ice.  I had barely a sip before it was empty and the waitress came back asking if I wanted another.  I said, yes, if it is more like pitcher sized.  She was VERY NICE and brought me back a large pilsner glass full of Diet Coke.  THANKS!  Dusty was thirsty.

Boyfriend got something specially brewed for Deep Ellum, so he was happy, though I didn't hear any raves....

We chatted and chatted.  Where were our apps?

Oh here they are.  I will now use caps to quote the other waitress who brought our food.

her: DEVILLED EGGS.
us: here!
her: DEVILLED EGGS.
us: right here please.
her: WHO GOT THE DEVILLED EGGS?
us: uh... (raises hand)
her:DEVILLED EGGGGGGGGGGS??
me: seriously right here.  i got the devilled eggs (reaches for plate)

her: DESSERT, BROWN DESSERT, MAYBE CHOCOLATE?
her: BEER CHEESE PRETZEL.  BEER CHEESE PRETZEL.  BEER CHEESE PRETZEL.  BEER CHEESE, BEER CHEESE, BEER CHEESE.
her: (giant grin on her face like she might be crazy.)
us: (petrified looks of terror, all stopped in mid sentence)

I have no idea why she chose to scream our orders at us repeatedly even after we told her who had what.  I think she thought she was being funny, but we were all assured that she was a zombie.

Now that that awkwardness was over we looked at the food

$6 devilled eggs means to Deep Ellum Two hard boiled eggs, split in half, a little paprika over half to make them barbeque flavored and so much mustard that's all you could taste.  The eggs cost, what $.45 total?  A little mayo, mustard, a half a box of paprika?  Total: $1.  You should offer more on the plate, the price is fine, but not for two eggs cut in half.

$8 beer cheese pretzel. GROSS.  I hate beer, thought it was just me.  Nope, only 3 out of 9 people thought the cheese was good/great/decent.  The rest made the Renne Zellweger face because it was so bitter.  The pretzels had been previously frozen, I guess I was expecting something half-heartedly handmade at the least.  It was better than amusement park fair, but right at the movie theatre pretzel stage.

Luckily I had good friends to spend the evening with, or it would have been more of a one star rating.

Again, the service was amazing by the short, cute blonde lady.  (She was NOT the one yelling our food at us).

After another great experience here, I needed to check my original review and see if it still applied.

Only difference from last time - the bartender who announced her last day approaching wasn't there.  No shock.

The patio was open and we got to enjoy it and the cool service out there.

Food, beer, vibe all consistent.

Here, Deep Ellum,  the final star

When this place first opened up I used to go in and there was practically no one hanging out here.  Then word got around and the place seemed to EXPLODE.  The food is pretty good, although I wish they would offer at least one more vegetarian option aside from the seitan burger (which is good don't get me wrong).  Other than the food, the beer selection is great.  I wish they had more middle of the road beers so that I didn't break the bank drinking here.  I don't drink cocktails really but the ones I've had here are really good.  When this place gets busy on say a Fri/Sat night, order drinks when you can because service tends to slow down a bit at peak hours.  They play REALLY good music here although it's just a little too loud for me as I often find myself getting drunk and literally yelling just to talk to a friend sitting across the table.  I would enjoy this place a lot more if it didn't get so loud and crowded at night.

Don't forget, they close around 1am.
