Sipping wine at Dee Vine's Pier 19 store made me feel as if I was accepting shipments at Al Capone's warehouse during prohibition. I was on the lookout for Eliot Ness hiding behind behind the cases of $374/bottle Auslese Rieslings.
Interestingly, their warehouse/retail store carries several wines bottled before the prohibition.: http://www.dvw.com/190...
As a distributor, their sales are mostly to restaurants, but they also operate as a retail store M-F 9am-5pm. I went to one of their special Saturday tasting event, where I learned about vintage Rieslings and tasted interesting bottles, including 1969 Schloss. You can learn about their upcoming events at their website : http://www.dvw.com/eve...
If you are a fan of German Rieslings, you have to check this place out. Staff is very knowledgeable and helpful. Most Asian food pairs best with Rieslings, so I look forward to learning more from them.

How cool are these people! I went in to pick up a bottle of cheap Burgundy, and they gave me a hefty pour of $300 Burgundy while I wait. I told them that I'm from Shizuoka, Japan, and they are like "oh, that's famous for Wakatake sake, green tea, and eel." Wow, not so many average Americans don't know that.

German wines. Alot of German wines. If you appreciate the difference between auslese and trockenberenauslese, get yourself to Dee Vine right away.
But it doesn't stop at great German wines. Here is why I fell in love... I happen to really like Burgundies, especially from Vosne-Romanee. There's a great producer from V-R by the name of Rene Engel. The winemaker (or owner?) passed away a few years ago, and the 2003 was the last vintage of Rene Engel made. At least that's the story as I know it.
So I'm at Dee Vine wines to pick up a case of Von Hovel 2005 Spatlese from Mosel Saar Ruwer (excellent wine, btw). It took me forever to find the place, but once I did, i thought i was in willy wonka's chocolate factory; nothing made sense, but i wanted some of everything.
There, lo and behold, were multiple cases of 1999 Rene Engel Vosne Romanee. Great German wines *and* Burgundies? I was floored.
Tip: they have several wine clubs, mostly focused on Germany. Good stuff. Even better, the club gives you a discount on all other purchases (10% if memory serves)

I tried to find you, really I did. I made a special point of trying to drop in while on vacation, based on your catalogs, products and website, I know I love you that much. But alas, the piers were just too confusing, industrial, and deserted feeling for this out-of-towner. I know that dude on the fork lift could have pointed me in the right direction, but I just didn't have the guts to bug him. Next time I'll give it another shot.
So none of that changes what a fabulous business this is. If you respect the amazing taste and value of quality Riesling, Dee Vine is as good as it gets. Make sure you get on their catalog list- it's beautiful in it's own right! And all the great information and knowledge they share will be sure to get you into some wonderful wine- and wine that lots of non-Germans (hell even many Germans!) tend to find extremely confusing (regions, praedikat, varietals, etc). Seriously, they blow me away with their knowledge here- a wonderful business.
Oh yes, I can't say enough wonderful things about Dee Vine Wines. I work with them in the wine industry and they really do get some great finds and great wines in general. Everyone there is friendly and knowledgeable and they all know how to have a good time too! I can't recommend them enough!! Plus, it's a fun little trip to a warehouse on the piers - how often do you get to do that?!
five stars for the best place for hard to find wines from Germany, Spain, France, and more. Bodegas Castillo de Sajazarra Rioja Digma
98 reserva 750ml $17...they are out wheep wheep....but get the 01 should be just as good...or pay a bit more and get the 500ml 98
Fantastic wine shop - suberb selection of german riesling - have a good selection of alsatian and austrian whites too. You can sometimes find the auction wines. Vintage champage and burgundies also. The staff know their stuff. They organize tastings too and the occasional wine dinner. Get on the mailing list.
