Pretty good brunch place serving large portions.  It's pretty easy to get a seat here and there are a lot of good choices.  I loved the shirred eggs, with bacon, cheese, and greens.  The perfect combination!  The Ekuri was deliciously spicy but beware if you don't have a high tolerance for spicy food.  The duck confit hash was also a winner, a hearty combination of tender duck, potatoes, and swiss chard topped with two fried eggs.  The side dishes were ok; I would suggest saving your stomach for the main courses.

West Village! Let me just throw in that by the time we got here for lunch, I was feeling slightly ill from all the restaurant-hopping we'd done prior to this. So I remember this as a sort of glazed hazy experience.

The waitress was rather understanding, and was okay with us (well, me) not meeting the $10 lunch minimum since they weren't very busy a the time (it was around 3-4 p.m.?). The salad my friend ordered was heavenly. This may also have been due to the fact that it was probably the first leaves of vegetables I had consumed the entire day. They were also really nice about ordering things that weren't on the menu. :O I ordered the tiramisu creme brulee, which was really freaking good, but really sweet. I couldn't eat too much of it, on account of everything I'd eaten before I'd gotten there. I was basically suffering from an insane sugar high and twitching.

I really loved the salad though, and given the chance, I'd like to go back there to try other foods, when I'm not stuffed to the max on desserts, bagels, sandwiches and coffee.

Last week, the boyf and I were wandering around the West Village, determined to find a really good place to have lunch.  We didn't want to go to a greasy diner and were getting hungry enough that splurging on a really lavish place seemed like a viable option.

We walked right past Deborah only to return a minute later.  The menu looked good, a little out of our range, and we were tired.  Perfect spot.

J. ordered the fish and chips, which he said was probably be best fish and chips he'd ever had.  (And this boy has done his fair share of sampling.)  I had homemade farfalle pasta with squash, zucchini, and other delightful additions.  This tasted AMAZING but made my tummy go crazy afterward--I'd ordered a pasta with cream sauce knowing full well I don't digest that very well.  My fault.

After lunch, we decided to splurge on an $8 dessert.  I was swayed by the note on the menu stating that all desserts are made in house daily.  We ordered a sundae, complete with caramelized banana and homemade strawberry (or was it raspberry?) chocolate sauce.  The dish was HUGE and well worth the price.

Our waiter was very professional and helpful without being overly friendly.  (It can be quite annoying to have a super-smiler in your face asking how things are every five seconds.)  The place was small, but we got the front window and enjoyed people watching.

Ate here once a while ago and it was literally one of the most awkward dining experiences I've ever had. I found a hair in my food, the cook got yelled at when I sent the food back and then another cook got fired when the manager brought him out to the table next to mine (not sure if it was hair-related).

All in all, just awkward and weird. Avoid.

this place is just fine, and I mean that in the best way.  I don't usually like brunch because of the waiting and the non-relaxy vibe most NYC brunch places have.  We came here when Grey Dog was just too stressful.  Had brunch - food was not spectacular but definitely good enough.  We didn't have to wait in line to get a seat and we didn't get sweated to leave when we looked to be 75% done eating.  We were allowed to loiter a little bit after we were done eating and were even told to "take our time".  The benefit of not being a trendy brunch place makes Deborah - to me at least - a better brunch place by far.

One of the Best Brunch Places in NYC!
I went with a group and the restaurant gods must've been smiling on us, six of us got a table almost with no wait  on a weekend morning.

The food was fantastic!
Born and reared in the South, I had to try the Homemade Buttermilk Biscuit Sandwiches and Eggs (Choice of applewood smoked bacon or sweet fennel link sausage topped with cheese, two eggs any-style and mesclun salad). I was gratefully surprised by the taste (good as down home) and the portion size: very generous.

My friends had (and I did my best to sample):

Ranchero Eggs
Crispy red pepper tortillas, fried eggs, black beans, Pickled jalapeno, lettuce, pico, chipotle aioli and yukon potatoes topped with melted cheddar and sour cream. Heart attack-on-a-stick, but worth the trip to Mt.Sinai.

French Toast "Sweet Challah Style"
Caramelized bananas, toasted walnuts, fresh seasonal berries, maple syrup dusted with sweet cocoa powder
Mmmmmm!

Ekuri
Fluffy scrambled eggs with minced Thai Chili Bird pepper and sliced onion topped on grilled sourdough batard slices finished with truffle oil. Unusual but really good!

The service was fast & very friendly: the owner sat us and checked in on us.

This is place is worth checking out. Originally my friends and I were planning on going to Grey Dog's Coffee next door, but it was extremely packed we decided to wander around and see what other restaurants were offering brunch. We stumbled upon Deborah and for a party of 6, we were immediately seated (to our delight). The place eventually filled up too so we were lucky.

I got the Cajun Spiced Sunfish with slow cooked grits and two over-easy eggs. The sunfish was a bit peppery, but it was nice and tender. Not too flaky, and with the eggs, made a great combination of food. I'm not a huge fan of grits so I can't say that I really liked it. However, the salad dressing definitely added to this dish. Overall, not too bad though I would like to try their winter spiced pumpkin muffins or buttermilk biscuits.

I enjoyed my time there and seeing the dishes that other tables got, I definitely want to go back and try out more.

Decent place; the food was pretty good, and the staff was really friendly.  Service was on the slower side, and their beer selection was awful.  (Beck's, Bass, Grolsch?  Seriously?)

I had mahi mahi tacos which were definitely good; friends had vegetarian pasta and a chicken enchilada.  All the plates were completely cleaned off which is a good sign.

Also, I spilled my friend's soda all over the place.  Sorry for the sticky floor.

My coworker Deborah just had a baby and will be gone for 6 months, so I'm going to review this place to keep a piece of her in my heart.... not that she has anything to do with the restaurant.

My friend had his birthday party here, and it was super fun!  I sat across from this girl I had never met, and we kept encouraging eachother to get appetizers and dessert and especially MORE WINE.  (We racked up this huge bill and then the people at the other end of the table who ordered way less decided to split it evenly for simplicity's sake.  Chumps!)

Anyway, she asked the waitress for recommendations and details on the menu, and the girl was happy to oblige.  Everyone was really friendly, and the food was super good.  We had this bouillabaisse with all this seafood and spiciness.  It was huge!

Basically the food was great, the people were nice, the atmosphere was cute... it was a totally positive experience.

Oh, and eat the lasagna rolls.  You'll die of deliciousness.

Decent little spot, but overall not impressed. Bacon was dry and bland. Duck confit hash, which I read raves about, was inspired, but ultimately poorly executed. It lacked any real punch and the flavors didn't agree with me.

When I first came here about three years ago for brunch, I fell in love with the place.  I had a duck confit that was to die for.

I also came with a fellow GF (two years ago) and I had the fish 'n chips, which actually were a great deal and tasty.  The apple martinis were good too and had little apple candies in them.

But, recently I came here on a date (yuck) and then with my mom and it was all less than stellar and thoroughly inconsistent.  Plus, I feel like business might be bad...

I had the brine cured pork chop, which would have been excellent except for the fact that it was stuffed with cornmeal and jalapenos.  Don't get me wrong, got nothing but love for the jalapenos...But corn meal is gritty and totally took away from the tasty pig.  The mashed potatoes were orgasmic, truly, I wanted to roll around in them.

The next time I came I had the mussels which are steamed in sort of a tom yum broth, coconut milk, lemongrass sort of a deal.  This was really tasty!!  But, my mom ordered something that came with the mashed potatoes, and this time they had way too much dairy and not enough flavor, I was quite depressed.

We also got the triple scoop sundae dessert, disappointing as it was advertised to have caramel, fudge, oreo cookie crumbs (OMG).  But, barely had any except tons of fudge.  I love caramel, hence sadness ensued.

The service was fine, but she seemed a bit stressed.  Which, as a former 'server' myself I understand, but you never want to see that.

It's a nice place, but I think something is missing.

Deborah has joined my short list of favorite restaurants.  First of all, I like the feisty, bright Deborah herself, with whom we had some interaction.  I also like the design and what she's done with the really tight space.  But most of all, I like the menu and I love the food.  One of the rare instances where a restaurant features selections from such disparate roots as Mexican, Italian, and Asian, and yet all of it is prepared with integrity and comes together as a balanced evening.

I especially enjoy the salad of edamame, arugula, and mushrooms, and the calamari appetizer.   All of the entrees I have sampled were just wonderful.  I am less enthusiastic about the cocktails (those I've tried were too tart) and the desserts (conceptually fun, but not transcendent).  Overrall, though, highly recommended as one the best little restaurants around.

I don't know how I've managed to miss this restaurant over the past year I've lived in the West Village, but a friend of mine and myself stumbled across it while gamboling down Carmine this evening, and I'm very happy we did.

The food I ordered at Deborah was excellent. We shared a beet salad, which was probably the best beet salad I've ever had. The beets were warm and juicy and combined with the crispy spinach and nuts and the robustness of the blue cheese - well, the salad was amazing.

I had the mini-meatloaf and my friend had the duck. Mine was very good, the mashed potatoes were like mom used to make and the accompanying spinach was also excellent.

Tonight's meal was excellent. The wine was good, the salad and main courses amazing. The service great. My one quibble is with the noise level - because one wall is brick this restaurant gets loud, but it's something one can deal with.

Definitely come to Deborah if you can. Ask to be seated in the outside courtyard which I've heard is quite lovely. You won't be disappointed with anything here - the food and service are both way above par.

Regular macaroni and cheese will never be the same for me having eaten at Deborah.  The service was superb and I could see myself taking date(s) there for comfort food and conversation.  Unfortunately I live in San Diego, so I must resort to buying Kraft's "blue box" and imagining that it tastes a million times better.

Good brunch - I had the eggs rancheros and nearly ate myself into incapacitation (big portions!) but managed to stop. Small but lengthy, cozy space inside. Personal service. Interesting selection of restaurant-specific dishes (in addition to standard brunch fair). Little bit pricey.

This restaurant is one of the best in Manhattan. The staff is so friendly, and the food is great. You can tell that they put all of their homosexuality into everything they do there. You MUST try the macaroni and cheese. It is withdrawal-worthy. The sangria is the best I've ever had. They even give you chopsticks to get the fruit out.

They are quite expensive, but well worth it. It is weird because they are closed on Mondays, and I recommend making a reservation for any other days because they seem to have really random busy times.

The Review:
Dinner was amazing.

The cuisine is nouveau American, incorporating Asian and Australian flavors (don't ask me what that second part means, it just is).  One might expect this mixing of flavors to be totally out of control, but Deborah is a culinary chemist, just taking your palate to the fringe of delectable, and never crossing over to the "ugh! wtf is this?!"

The menu has something for everyone and is also slightly seasonal; the portions are large. Desserts were omfg fabulous.

Small, cozy space, don't try to get in here with more than 4 people without reservations; open kitchen, and cute bathroom.

Food: 5 stars
Service: 4 stars
Bathroom: cute and clean

The Drama:
Deborah pretty much had to kick this crazy-ass, scene-causing "customer" out of her restaurant.

She was short staffed for dinner that night, so she also had to work the 'front of the house'.

The "customer" complained that where she sat was 'too drafty' and being that it was a cold night in winter (and it being a small restaurant) there was a draft when the front door opens; even though there were 'door curtains' and 3 heat lamps strategically placed as not to set fire to the curtains or other people.

When the doors were closed, it was hot.

Deborah tried to ease her worries; she was already sitting in the least drafty table (aside from being in the kitchen), but she snapped back, "I don't need you to make me happy!", got up, commented how bad the service was, and prepared to leave.  She didn't leave silently, but I'll leave that up to your imagination.

I think she was more pissed because her dinner date didn't offer to swap seats with her.  Oh the drama!

Stumbled upon Deborah while browsing the weekend street fair (on Saturday).  Popped in for lunch.  It was wonderful.

Got seated right away.  Place is small, long and narrow, but I didn't feel cramped or squeezed in.   Hot day so iced teas to quench our thirst - cool and fresh brewed.  I had the grilled chicken club, and my partner had the veggie burger.  My club was wonderful - absolutely perfect (and I'm pretty darn picky).  Bread had a great flavor and texture - it was grilled just right.  Chicken was tasty, not dried out.  Bacon was amazing - thick, sweet, smoky - and ideal compliment to the chicken.  Cheese was tasty - helped to pull everything together.   Simply wonderful.  My partner's veggie burger was fresh, well prepared, good flavor - I only had a nibble of it, but it seemed to be of the same caliber as what I had.

Bottom line - go, eat, you will enjoy.  Prices were reasonable.  Decor was modern, nice light, clean lines.  Bathroom was small but clean.  Service was prompt but not rushed.  We really got lucky with this place.  I will be back.

I had one dish here ..and it was downright ghastly.  So much so that I kept staring at it, moving bits around then looking up with a nervous half-smile-half-frown.  Can't remember what the dish is called but here are the ingredients: mesclun salad, bacon, some dressing not all too dissimilar to Thousand Island, potatoes, egg topped off with a layer of melted cheese.

Who melts cheese over salad leaves?
Deborah apparently.

PS I feel bad criticising a restaurant after just one dish.  But really, anyone who puts an entree like this together deserves to be smacked hard with a smoked kipper.  I give it two stars tho' it really deserves none, cos I don't want to be unjustly cruel if it was just an anomaly.

But I still want my $16 back.

Absolutely amazing! Deborah's personal philosophy is food that tastes great shouldn't cost an arm or a leg! Which is true, her food is affordable and wonderful! It is the only place I've ever seen with my two favorite desserts combined into one super dessert.
A Tiramisu Creme Brule. Just try it.
Or try a dessert sampler!

My husband and I had a delicious and fun Saturday night dinner here.  We just loved our food and enjoyed a couple of interesting cocktails.  Our server was very friendly and knowledgeable about the menu.  The only complaint I could come up with would be that the space is pretty tiny so a loud group nearby made it tough for us to hear one another.  Though we only happened to stumble upon the place by accident as we wandered around the West Village, we definitely want to go back!

good dinning experience.
went in at about 11am with friend for brunch.
waitress was very kind and attentive, not in an overwhelming way.
had ranchero eggs and duck confit with the chocolaye pon de creme as the finale.
very nice food all in all.
good portions too.
you definitely get filled up and satisfied in here.

extra note: i thought it'd be packed. but there was only another couple in the restaurant and we got to sit in the window corner.
maybe we attracted the business?

Brought a group of twelve people here today for late brunch after one of the group performed at the Soho Playhouse as part of the Fringe.  First, we were going to be four.  Then five. Then nine.  Then we showed up with twelve people.  The reason this matters is because Deborah is tiny.  I called every time but the last one and each time it was no problem.  To get us all in, we ended up with a table of ten and one of two, but the two oddballs wound up hitting it off like a house afire, so it all worked out.

Deborah, located across the street from the former Shopsin's location, is charming inside, with a warm, relaxed atmosphere that is both sophisticated and unpretentious at the same time.  I had the best bloody mary I ever drank while waiting for eggs rancheros unlike any I had ever had.  The brunch menu and the lunch menu were both available when we got there around 2:30 on a Sunday (today) and between the two menus, we had quite a representative sampling of their offerings.  Enchiladas, smoked salmon and spinach eggs Benedict, tiger shrimp salads, edamame salads, cobb salads, the most incredible French toast and sake sangria to die for all went over big with this foodie crowd who don't like overpaying and know what good food is.  Nobody had been there before and everyone enjoyed themselves immensely.  Prices were reasonable for exemplary food and friendly service of extremely high quality, with lunch and brunch dishes ranging from under $10 to about $20 for some of the fish and seafood offerings.

There is a tiny patio in back, and additional seating right before there, so if it looks too full to go inside, don't worry, there is still a chance you might be able to get squoze in.  The co-owner David (of Woo Lae Oak fame) is on site all the time, as Deborah Stanton continues to recover from a  car accident that left her seriously injured for quite some time.  The convivial and friendly environment is sadly too rare these days, and was a lovely treat to experience.

A wonderful neighborhood restaurant warranting many trips back, Deborah was a delight for all of us and we lingered well after coffee and dessert to avoid having to say goodbye.

P.S.--The bathroom is adorable and cleeeeean!

Deborah ranks high on my list..
1.  easy to get to
2.  hugeeee portions
3.  good hearty food
4.  cute bathroom

Ok, so the last one isn't all that important but ... it's nice to know.

I had the buttermilk biscuits/egg/bacon for brunch today and it was good.. left feeling stuffed, satisfied, hunger pains long forgotten.  To round out the meal, the cappucino was awesome.  I luv that.. good meal, good caffeine, good place.  Great brunch spot and I can't wait to come back for the dinner menu.

My girlfriend had the eggs rancheros and again, it was huge.  It was good too.. but according to her, the Bloody Mary's are a NO GO.

Excellent brunch/lunch fare!

I enjoyed a burger, medium rare with an organic bun, the plate was presented nicely with a salad and many tiny fries, which were amazing. My companions sampled the fish & chips and the french toast. They said both were delicious. Our waitress was very friendly and quick, now I know I can come downstairs and get a yummy meal!

C. and I stopped here for dinner before going to a friend's house party in the financial district. If you look in the front windows and think it's too full up to try getting a table, step inside regardless; there are tables along the side you can't see -- and a seating area beyond the kitchen.

C. ordered the tilapia with spinach and couscous. The tilapia was rubbed with spices and fried, and the bed of couscous was perhaps the highlight of the meal -- mixed in with chopped tomato and other goodies. I ordered the center-cut pork chop served on garlic mashed potatoes and spicy collard greens. You can't beat garlic mash and collard, so the meal's worth it just for that. The pork chop, however, which was delish, was a little precious in its presentation.

The center-cut pork chop came in four little medallions surrounded by seaweed like a sushi roll. And on top of the medallions -- which sat atop the mash and greens -- was sprinkled more seaweed. All in all, everything was good, but the nod to Asian fusion was a little awkward and unconvincing.

For dessert, we tried their rendition of red velvet cake, a southern staple. While an excellent end to the meal, it's not what I'd consider real red velvet cake, and I'm not a southerner by any stretch of the imagination -- OK, southern Wisconsin. Worth a try, but a gamble if you're a purist.

The mind eraser martini is really, really good.  The wine we chose for dinner - eeh, marginal.  The opening salad we all shared was excellent.

We were four for dinner and each of us chose something different.  The kielbasa mac and cheese is delish. The ribs were fantastic, the pulled pork burrito fair to middling.  As for what I ordered, I don't recall.  I do know I ordered the mind eraser first.

Deborah is one of my neighborhood favorites. I absolutely love their menu.  My friends and I were very happy with all of our entrees (I had the chicken), but thank goodness we left room for dessert!  We tried the Red Velvet cake and sort of chocolate cake with nutella and both were amazing.  The service was nothing special (they had some trouble getting our drink order right) but the chef came around to greet the customers during our meal, which was a really nice touch.

I always forget about Deborah.  It's off my beaten path, so it ofetn goes overlooked.  It's a delightful little spot to dine, and they have a nice selection of Sake and a great menu of cocktails made with Sake.  The menu is healthy and light, and I enjoy the Asian flare.  It is difficult to get a table without a reservation, but I'll definitely be headed back now that I have it back on radar!

I went her yesterday around noon for brunch with two gal pals.  It's a small space that is narrow and long.  We walked in without a reservation and was promptly seated! 8D

One friend ordered the duck confit salad.  My friend and I ordered their French Toast with walnuts and strawberries.  We ordered a side of their spicy pumpkin muffins.

The service was prompt despite things picking up.  On the plus side, the portions are HUGE, esp the French Toasts! The slices were BIG and THICK.  IMHO, it was a bit soggy and may be because it was soaked in syrup! I am not a big syrup fan and usually prefer to "dip" my toast in it cuz I don't like my Frenchies too sweet.

The pumpkin muffins tasted a bit like banana muffins to me.  It was alright but nothing to die for.

Overall, the brunch deal isn't so bad for $14 (set price).  The portions are BIG and the Frenchies can be shared for 2.  The one irritating incident was the number of times various server's and bus boys approached us asking if we were done or still working on it.  It happened back to back and it was OBVIOUS we were all "still working" on our food cuz there was still a LOT of food left on it!  We kept being interrupted every few minutes having to inform them we weren't done!  We were so annoyed after the 3rd time, we decided to ask for the bill.  The bus boy had the audacity to ask us if we wanted to pack it to go?! WTH?!

It's a cute space and the service is good but I've had better in terms of brunch food.  Would I go back? Not anytime soon...Would I recommend it? Wouldn't be the first brunch spot that comes to mind....

Great laid back atmosphere. Great place to meet up with girlfriends and chat.  Delicious food, great portions, (some plates enough to share) an awesome brunch spot.  Love the food, great staff, can't wait to go back.

To date, the most unusual version of Huevos Rancheros I'd seen... This was more like nachos. It probably shouldn't even qualify as "Ranchero Eggs." And I don't think cheddar cheese is authentic. The cheese and chips made it taste heavier and more unhealthy than usual.

Talk about stupendous food! I am in complete awe at how simple and tasty these dishes are. My BF and I came upon this place by accident, the sign was askew and relatively small, so you could walk by it rather quickly. The bold RED is what gets you. Great use of color and it is consistent throughout the restaurant itself.

I had the crispy phyllo triangles with tomato, spinach, artichokes and feta. Lovely mix of ingredients and taste... it is so soft on the palate. The sauce with it (I think a basil, cilantro, citrus mix) was a great contrast. Not overpowering, but a great compliment.  As my main, I had the aged strip sirloin steak frites. OMG, what a wonderful piece of meat this was! Tasty, prepared medium rare as I wanted and juicy as all hell. Those fries.... dear god... I never thought I'd salivate over FRIES, but those things were damn good. The texture contrast was perfect. My BF had the lamb tenderloins, and you could taste the natural flavor of the lamb... beautifully prepared.

I reserve the final star for dessert, which we weren't able to consume because we were too full!! But... BUT... the strawberry shortcake looks nothing short of amazing. Piled high with lots of cream and strawberries and luscious looking goodness... *drool* I have to go back for it. Must, my friends, must!! No lie, it's not cheap and a bit on the pricey side, but oh is it worth it....

Brunch is much better than dinner.  Good ambiance and good hamburgers and basic food (biscuits are yummy) but anything more complicated seems to turn out a bit strange.

Best place for brunch or dinner when you can't make a decision.
Recommend:
-Mac & Cheese with Turkey Kilbasah
-the skirt steak with chimchurri sauce
-During brunch, the chicken sandwich with chipotle mayo or the eggs/bacon and buttermilk biscuits.
The chef's also a sweetheart!

Really yummy comfort food - awesome brunch for $13, which includes either fresh coffee or juice.  Pretty casual environment - usually there are lines out of the door, but it's worth it.  We went for brunch, and split the french toast 'sweet challah style" and the eggs with tilapia - both were amazing.  We both loved it!  The staff was so nice and competent.
