Owner has recently changed the name to "Chocolate City".  He felt that Deano's had too much  of a reputation of being for black people only.  He wanted something that would be more welcoming to people of ALL races.  (Seriously)  "Chocolate City" seems like the obvious choice to me.
Sorry, can't comment on the food or drink - I've only been in here on 911 calls.  The atmosphere is pleasant though - if when I say "pleasant" you think "violent and threatening..."

Also, if you are into crack or heroin please replace the one-star rating with five-stars.

Hottest crack spot in town!  However now called Chocolate City.  If you're not black, prepare for hard stares and a deafening record skip upon entrance.  Not for the faint of heart, but a guarantee winner when trying to score.  Although terrible selection of imported beers and micro-brews, still mildly recommended.

I'll be honest; I went to Deano's as a voyeur and to build my own credibility. I had to balls to go and I survived.
I'd lived in Madrona/CD for about 5 years and had witnessed the crack scores and whores from afar, with intrigue. I became a patron of the nearby Twilight Exit (formerly just next door) and while I loved the Twilight, I felt a little bit of a wuss partaking of yet another PBR or Scotch with all the white hipsters when I knew there was some hard core shit going on next door.
But one night, once the Twilight moved across the street from Deano's, I mustered up enough liquid courage to go. And I took a couple other caucasian friends, including a cute blonde chick, and stayed pretty vague on the dangers of our destination.
We arrived at the door and were given the ID check. The hip hop coming out of the bar was deafening. The bouncer informed me that there'd be a $5 cover. I turned to my crowd to announce it, with the tone of voice that implied that I understood if no one was willing to fork it over. The bouncer took my cue, tapped me on the shoulder and looked both ways before telling me he'd let us in for free.
Inside, we ordered a few Hennesseys and looked around. The record didn't skip, but my Jew nose sure looked out of place as I milled about. One of my cohorts, another Jew, was actually hit upon pretty quickly. He danced with a middle-aged woman with incredibly unfortunate breasts while I hung over near the broken video game machine. The music was loud, the speakers were blown, and while there were a handful of people dancing, they were all of the early 40s or maybe younger-but-higher-mileage crowd. Our blonde friend made it out without even getting hit on.
We came, we saw, we danced for a bit, and we didn't get killed. There was some sweet bling, there were some tragic looking people, and there were a few that were friendly and chatty over near the bar. We were respectful and the adrenaline stayed low.
Certainly not for everyone's taste, but it can be done.
I haven't actually tried to score there, but from what I see and hear it shouldn't be hard.
