The fried seafood is very good - although the best dish was the barbequed peel and eat shrimp.
You'll get damn messy when you eat those shrimp (as evidenced by the bits of shrimp and sauce on my shirt and in my hair.) It was somewhat thrilling, slicing the heads off with my butter knife. I am finding that I like it when my food has a face.
Agree with Thuy on the crawfish... it was tiny not worth it!
First time at Deanie's Seafood, the atmosphere is great... no frills.
Food: I had 3 lbs of puny crawfish, the boil wasn't spicy either. Hubby a non seafood person had the hamburger which looks normal... nothing to brag home about.
This place is the king of fried things! Don't bother with the wimpy, plain salad, go for the seafood platters. Deanie's is a local favorite and maybe the reason NOLA is ranked so high in numbers of obese people.
The atmosphere is a no frills family diner. The wait staff look, and talk, like they've been serving food for 30 years (no doubt they have). We've taken our fair share of groups here and always had a great time.

Post-Katrina: Deanie's in Bucktown is alive and kickin....
Still busy as ever (as all the rest of the dining establishments).
The only option here: get the seafood platter!!!!! It's a huge mound of fried shrimp, fried catfish, fried oysters, a few fried soft shell crabs -- ALL on top of french fries and their signature crawfish balls.
Down south, we love fried food, eh?! Their crawfish balls are unique and sensational, it's a Cajun version of hush puppy...enough spices to make you go "hey" and yummy enough to make you go "mmmm!"
I'm not really big on their crawfish...a few times it came out cold and metallic tasting (?!).
No reservations and they won't seat you until your entire party arrives. One hostess is the witch of all witches and snooty as heck! But the boiled potatoes they give you when you sit down is enough to make you forget about it....
Don't forget to order an Abita beer! Fried salty foods and Abita, yummy!
