I really don't know how to rate this diner.  Great prices!  Food is pretty decent.  They close very early and it had pretty good lunch business on Wednesday.

I guess the weird thing is that almost all the patrons on the day I went were of similar demographic: blue collar men in their 50's and 60's, giving the place a divey feel.  BUT, it had Star Trek paraphenalia everywhere!  You could choose whether you wanted to sit at a blue or red or yellow table, and the tv played original series.  There was even a large photo of the owner/cook with nimoy and shatner.

I felt like the patrons stoically tolerated the owner's homage to Star Trek.  Ever wish you could dress up like spock and enter a dive?  Well, you can do so here without getting beat up.

I would call this place the last bastion of independently owned cafes in San Jose. Located at the corner of Branham and Pearl and tucked neatly away behind the Weinerschitzel, it's often unseen by passing traffic. Make sure to visit before 3:00pm, since they only serve breakfast and lunch. My husband and I visited around noon on a Saturday, and the place was pleasantly quiet (I was also told that it could get quite hopping during weekdays).

DeAngelo's serves tasty, home-made style American food: grilled cheese, roast beef sandwiches, hamburgers, club sandwiches, eggs, bacon, sausage, etc. I ordered the grilled cheese for $5.95, and that came with a good-sized salad that included lettuce, tomato, garbanzo, and kidney beans. I'm not usually a fan of the kidney beans, but the freshly made bleu cheese dressing made the salad absolutely delicious. My grilled cheese arrived next, with a tangy dill spear on the side. My husband ordered a roast beef au jus (just $6.50) and that arrived soon after, stacked high with roast beef as well as a hearty portion of French fries on the side. We could easily have ordered spaghetti, raviolis, or any other number of delicious items from the "Star Trek"-themed menu.
And now we come to the best part: the restaurant's decor. The eating area is a complete homage to "Star Trek" throughout the years: everything from the original series to "Voyager," and a thankful omission of "Enterprise."  The tables are color coded by section, each symbolizing a different uniform shade on the original series. We sat in the red section, although we easily could have chosen gold or blue. The owners have shelves of bobble heads, posters, ornaments hanging from the ceiling, action figures, play scenes, cereal boxes, TV guide covers, imitation phasers, "Star Trek" crossing signs, and the like. Our server was very sweet, and our food and drinks arrived promptly. The drinks are generously sized--each comes in a jar-sized container. My iced tea was perfectly strong and managed to kill off the headache that I'd arrived with.  If you're looking for something home-cooked, pleasant conversation from the regulars, and generously sized drinks for only $1.69, then you know where to go. Treat yourself soon--just don't go on a Monday, since they're closed that day. Happy eating!

My friend and I just had breakfast at DeAngelo's this morning. I live in the area and had always been curious to try it. It was well worth it. The food was wonderful - very tasty and extremely generous in terms of the portion size, including the drinks. The decor is the coolest. Even if you're not a trekkie (I happen to be one), you can still appreciate the time and obvious devotion the owners have to the series and get a kick out of the incredible collection of memoribilia they have. This is definitely a wonderful family owned cafe that I will recommend to everyone I know.
