This place is so awesome. I am always intrigued by all the funky foods in this place. They offer speciality gourmet cooking/baking/food items, and it just overwhelms me everytime I'm there. I can't resist their deli area either. The food is so damn good! The sandwiches, the salads, their house made pasta salads, the sushi! But oh so expensive.
D&D is EXPENSIVE, no doubt. Unfortunately, I can only afford to shop there every now and then when I feel like splurging. A small bottle of organic juice will run you almost 4 bucks. Yikes.
But it's so cute, cute, cute!

What happened to this place? It used to be on our "must stop" list everytime we went to KC but last time it was horrible. I had high hopes because it seemed as if they had changed a few things around and added some interesting items to the lunch menu but everything we ordered was very disappointing. I want the old D&D back!

Still have to give them at least two stars for the wonderful desserts and great selection of gourmet items.

I haven't been here for a while, and now I remember why.  The sandwiches, although very tasty and fresh, is very expensive.  I had an 8" baguette with salami, swiss, tomatoes and lettuce for $ 8.  The drink was an orange bubbly drink for $ 3.75.  Holy Smokes, what was I thinking, the place was packed, I bumped into alot of my clients.  If money is no object it's a great place to eat, there's even sushi.

Anyone who digs on the gourmet food knows about Dean and Deluca and I never realized there were any locations outside of NYC. Not sure how KC rates their own store, but I am not gonna look this gift horse in the mouth.

So if you're hip to D&D, you know that their stores carry high end food products. This location also has a bakery, deli and coffee shop. Score.

I'm all about impressing people with desserts, so I went to the bakery section to grab an assortment for a dinner party I attended. Of course, there were red velvet cupcakes to be had. I also picked up a few brownie lollipops, a few pieces of mini pink champagne cakes, a carrot cakelet, and the peanut butter cup cheesecake. Then I went to the deli for some cookies and we also ended up getting some gelato.

The gelato was eaten on the spot and was a perfect way to cool down. The fresh strawberry with chocolate is excellent. I also enjoyed the peanut butter banana.

Everyone at the dinner party could not wait to get into the desserts. We actually had dessert first. The red velvet cupcake was all me - the cake was perfectly moist and dense and the cream cheese frosting was thicky and creamy without being too sweet. I also had a few tastes of the cookies (all great) and a brownie on a stick. No complaints whatsoever.

Before I left KC today, I ran in there to get some lunch for me and a co-worker. I ordered the Italian hero - a bunch of Italian deli meats with provolone on a baguette. They sprinkle balsamic vinegar and oil on the bread to add flavor. It was a huge sandwich and very tasty. The meats were high quality (or course) and the balsamic was a perfect foil to the saltiness of the meats.

I know that most people would consider their prices unreasonable, but I have no problems paying for the quality of their products (whether or not I expense it or pay for it personally isn't a factor here.)  Love love love D & D and will be back every time I'm in KC.

What do I do when I find myself in Kansas City (Overland Park) for the first time, for work? Find the only Dean & DeLuca between the da east coast and da west coast! Not that easy to find in the far far SE corner of the Town Center Plaza (an upscale shopping center, but still not as nice as some).

Not that big, but apparently they're moving to a new larger location just across the street early in 2009. Well, they've got the fancy packaged goods, cheese & deli counter, compact but wide selection of pastries/cupcakes, upscale chocolate, prepared foods, made to order salad and sandwich bar, sushi, cafe and gelato, and more. So they pack a lot of upscale gourmandary in a smallish space (hey, maybe I made up a word?).

High prices??? Check! Cupcakes are $4.25, Odwalla drink $4.50. However, there are some deals I spotted, less than or no more than Whole Paycheck: sushi prices, hot grilled chicken and sides by the pound, reasonable sandwiches. Look carefully.

So, do I need to check out the famous KC BBQ? Sure. But I'm a former New Yorker - I gots to make my pilgrimage to the D&D, one of the few that can really one-up the Goliath WFM, vying for yuppie cash.

My first experience and familiarity with Dean & Deluca came from episodes of Felicity (rocking show by the way) and the Today show. Visions of New York danced in my head and I was a fan for life without ever being to NYC or to D&D.

D&D has always been this iconic place to me that represented this romantic space with an organic and local flavor. D&D is no doubt great with their products and abundances of culinary delights. The location does seem packed with Country-Clubbers simply because it's cool to be seen there on the weekends. I digress. . .

This D&D store isn't so much a coffee shop as it is a kitchen store and market, having a great assortment of kitchenware and ingredients that would please any gourmet enthusiast. All of it being gorgeous and expensive but classy as ever. It's a treat to go there and spend money on great stuff.

Top 5 Favorites at Dean and Deluca (all ridiculously overpriced, but in taste alone, well worth the sacrifice):

1. Mac and Cheese, seriously good.
2. Rugelach, so chewy, so cinnamony
3. Sour Cream Apple Walnut Pie. Oh. My. God. Might I add, it is perfect for fall.
4. Sea Salt Caramel
5. Mint Malt Balls

My sister and I became obsessed with this place when we stumbled upon its catalog a few years ago...and then the best day of our lives: actually finding a D&D in our city.

Although neither of us can afford to eat here as often as we like, they offer samples of almost anything, so you can decide how much (no matter how small a portion) you want - which is the most cost effective way of going about it. Its also a great place to try new foods without the commitment of ordering it from a high end restaurant and running the risk of hating it altogether. Sampling is my best friend!

I love the market-feel of it, like its all been imported yesterday from France and everyone is there to pick up something unique, grazing the counters and enjoying the sights and smells of the different foods. I LOVE food...and Dean and Deluca is where I first declared it! Food is an art here, and as much a feast for the eyes as it is for the stomach.

Expensive specialty gourmet store.  Awesome place for foodies.  They have pastries, fresh meats, sandwiches, and a coffee shop.  If you need prosciutto this is the place to go.  A large selection of cheese as well.  I enjoy sitting outside on the sidewalk or patio in the summer enjoying a beverage and watching the people.

YES, Kansas has more than wheat fields and sunflowers.

Those guys at the sandwich counter are really nice... made me a sandwich that was half one, half another when I couldn't make up my mind.

Dean & Deluca is a good place for foodies to shop.  I'm not a foodie, but I am a fan for good desert.  This place has them!  While this location is not as cool or urban as the ones in DC (Georgetown) or New York (SOHO, ect) it's still great that the KC area got one at all.  They have a nice selection of deserts and prepared foods as well as an espresso bar an other groceries.  This location is pretty small, but I guess they are moving to a bigger one soon.  How about setting up shop in KCMO?...on the Plaza or something...they they would get 5 stars!  haha

Loooooooove it!  If Whole Foods is my wife, then this place would be my mistress.  Love how all the guys decked out in their sexy chef attire are dying to please you with their fresh culinary creations.

My favorite things to buy here are vinegar's, olive oil, cheese and those killer brownies.  They also carry hard to find 00 flour.  If you make your own pasta, you know what I am talking about.

I cannot wait until they open in the new lager space by Crate and Barrel...Feed me chocolate covered strawberries on a ultra suede C&B couch...

I hear this is "the place to be seen" on Saturday mornings.  That's not really my thing though.  There are plenty of great things to say about this posh grocery/deli/bakery.  But whatever you do, don't miss out on the freshly-prepared sandwiches.  The meats are wonderful.  The bacon is to die for.  I'm a big fan of adding avocado.  And they even have sliced brie, which is fantastic on a mile-high sandwich, custom-made to your specifications.  There are lots of different spreads (beyond mustard and mayo), too...

Sandwiches run about 7.50.  You can end up with a bill twice that if you buy their gourmet chips and over-priced beverages.  If money is no object, you should check out their baked goods and take a stroll around the store for exotic foods that you won't find at your local Price Chopper or Hen House.

One last thing...  The service is excellent!  Enjoy!!

Having been in the specialty food industry for years in SF, Dean and Deluca has always been mentioned as this mecca for gourmet at it's best.  I've drooled over catalogs, clicked my way through their website, but never entered a store...until I moved to Kansas, go figure.

I was almost giddy upon entering, this was like going to Disneyworld!  Except... wait, is this it?  It was tiny!  I mean, less than 400 square feet of retail.  Sure, they had all their bases covered with the prepared food--deli, hot food, cafe, desserts, but the rest?  Bor-ing!  I proceeded to where I was most comfortable, the chocolate selection.  Man, was I disappointed.  Next to Michel Cluizel, they sold Ghiradelli?  Whaa?  You can find Ghiradelli at any Walgreens, it shouldn't be at Dean and Deluca.  So then I went to the truffle case and saw some favorites (Knipshildt) next to some not so favorites (William Dean, who actually stole Christopher Elbow's recipes from when he apprenticed under him...hopefully karma will catch up to him).  Except, they were selling Knipschildt's Quail eggs, which are made seasonally for Easter, and um, it's almost Thanksgiving...(I really hope they're fresh).

Okay, besides chocolate, their cheese selection was outrageous (in a good way!).  Offering ANY type of gourmet cheese, with awesome descriptions of each, Dean and Deluca has hit it on the head with their selection.  You also have to love their olive oil selection and baking extracts.

They are opening a larger store across the street for cooking and baking supplies, which should be exciting (did I mention I love cooking and baking supplies too?).  It wasn't the store I thought it would be, a bit disappointed in their selection, but I'm glad I'm close to one regardless.  Now I know it's just another store, nothing to get too excited about but reliable in finding those hard to get ingredients so I can make my own extraordinary food.

I loved this store so much I took a part time job there just to use the discount. The desserts (especially the chocolate dipped macaroons) are orgasmic. Their daily selection of soups can't be beat - I especially recommend the cream of asparagus soup. If you need advice about meats or veggies, talk to Ric, one of the chefs. He's a wealth of information and easily one of the friendliest guys I've ever met. This is a great spot to buy a unique gift, drink a good espresso, or simply treat yourself. There are good deals, too, you just have to dig a bit. :)

I dont know whether to love you, Kansas, or hate you for having a Dean & Deluca.  I would give my left hand for accessability to this store in Chicago.  That said, the selection was a bit lacking here vs NYC but a gorgeous store nonetheless.  Do you folks know how good you have it there?

A bit pricey, but lots of variety here & the employees were actually helpful. There are samples everywhere. Their thin pizzas are good & so are the desserts. I haven't tried the espresso bar, but I plan to! :)

Dean and Deluca is located in Town Center Plaza on the corner of 119th and Roe.  This gourmet grocer and deli is one of the best lunch places in southern Johnson County.  If you're going to go for lunch make sure you do it right, walk in and go around the grocery store part first.  Walk around, pretending to look at all the delicious shelved items while stuffing your face with the amazing array of free samples located on every corner of every isle.  This venture will take you past the bakery, the meat/seafood counter and finally the prepared hot and cold counter.  If you still have room in your stomach you can choose between several sandwiches or made to order salads, if you're full- you can leave.  I recommend sticking around and giving the D&D club a try; it is huge and delicious- if you are a normal human it should last you about 4 days.  If you are a giant or a professional athlete, it should fill you up.  Dean and Deluca also offers a choice of fresh sushi, soups, pizza, and gelato AND cookies!  They really have it all, you could go for weeks in a row and get something different and good every time.
