Review from Matthew J.
Roseville, CA
I am a little late in this review because the service was actually done over a month ago however I needed to make sure this review was posted.
This shop stays busy!
I was pretty impressed with the fact that on two separate occasions (when I made the appointment and when it was done) I noticed the techs (different techs each time) and they were actually TORQUING the lug nuts... with an actual TORQUE WRENCH!!
I got the feeling that Paul is a true Subaru nut who is very particular about the way things need to be done.
Very informative and easy to talk to. I will certainly be back in the VERY near future.
Everybody who loves their subaru should be taking it to DB Tuned.
Thank you Paul and keep up the good work!!!
Edit * Have since been back twice, and have nothing but great things to say. Prices are always fair and the techs are all around good people.
@ Patrick No offense but if you were noticing that getting a hold of Paul was difficult, why would you wait weeks and months in hopes that he would call you back?
I will admit that sometimes Paul is hard to get a hold of... however I know first hand that it is because he is working triple time to keep up with the demand of his happy and loyal customers and their referrals. -

April 2011 - I spent $5k having DB Tuned rebuild my motor. Owner said they didn't have the right vent hose but used radiator hose for now until the right part comes in. Said he will call me when it comes in so he can install it. No biggie.
BTW, he told me originally it would be done in 24 hours. Then when I dropped the car off, he said 48 hours. I never received a call back saying it would take longer, so I drop off rental car and as I walk into shop, owner says I'm way too early. Hmmm, no, actually you're late. I dropped off Monday moring, you told me to pick up Wednesday morning. I show up Weds morning. I'm not early. You're late and a poor communicator. Own it.
August 2011 - Never got call from DB Tuned about hose that was supposed to take a week to come in from dealer. I called them. He said he'd get right on it, call the dealer, order it, and call me back in 24 hours to schedule an appointment.
October 2011 - No call back. I call DB Tuned and leave voicemail regarding vent hose and possibly installing a new exhaust. Two days later now...no return call.
I like the guys at DB Tuned, so it sucks that I have to write these things about them. I spent $5k and I cannot get a call back.
UPDATE 12-10-11
Paul has apparently closed his DB Tuned operation and moved to Rocklin under a new business name FW Motorsports, where he uses supporting troops KIA in the War on Terror as an excuse to raise money to build a race car and ignore people like me who have spent $5k at his business and received less than paid for service.
I sent Paul a letter asking him to contact me to fix the above issue and have received ZERO reply. This is the kind of service you can expect from DB Tuned/FW Motorsports/Paul de Becker. I loathe hypocrites.

Paul is my go-to mechanic for any major work that needs to be done on my WRX. Why only major work? Because I live in Oakland and his shop is in Roseville. But that's how much I trust his work. He's worth the long drive out there.
Even when I'm not at his shop, he's given me a lot of advice/information over the phone on minor stuff for my car.
On my most recent visit for my timing belt & water pump replacement, he even let me borrow his car to run some errands while I waited for the service to be completed. He also didn't mind that I had my dog with me. It's too bad he didn't get along with Paul's dog, Dyna.
Awesome guy (and crew!) and awesome shop. I just wish his shop was closer! -

If you have a Subaru, be it a 100% stock family mobile or a fire breathing, 500hp STi, you have one and only one legit option on where to take it to get worked on. And that option is Db Tuned. Sure there are other places that work on Subaru's in town, but no one will give you the straight up honest advice and quality work that Paul performs on the regular. He does all repairs, factory maintenance, and anything else in between that your car might need.
My only gripe is that the location is waayyyy out in the sticks. If this world was a perfect place, it would be much closer to midtown. -

Paul has been doing all of the service on my 05 Subaru Legacy, 00 Forrester, and other cars for 3 + years now. Too many good things to say so i will just talk about the two main times he saved my hide.
1.) drove up to Donner summit to deliver me a replacement oil cap (from one of his cars) and spare oil.
2.) waited around the shop for 4 hours on a Sunday afternoon while i limped my car back from Napa. Repaired the car with parts he had on hand and dealt with the getting the manufacturer to replace it after the fact. i didnt have to do anything.
Paul is a stand up dude, but there are some things he wont do:
1.) bullshit you
2.) charge exorbitant amounts
3.) steal from you
4.) sell you stuff you don't need -

Paul at DB Tuned is the pointman for a professional operation where the mechanics are not only knowledgable, but personable and straight forward. Honesty, problem solving ability, and communication ability all come in spades at DB Tuned. When I needed a mechanic for my Acura Integra after moving to California from Virginia two years ago, I took the recommendation of some yelp reviews and I haven't been disappointed since. Now that's it's time for me to move back to the East Coast, Paul and his crew have gotten my car ready for one last cross country trip. I'm excited for the trip, but sad that I'll have to go through the process of finding another mechanic as good and honest as the ones at DB Tuned.

Talk to Paul for a few minutes and it becomes very clear that he is an auto mechanic because he enjoys the work. Paul diagnosed our vehicle, and was very honest and straightforward about the problem. We watched as he researched to provide us with options that fell within our budget.
We have found our new mechanic! -

Paul really does rock. We were looking at buying a used Subaru, and took it by him to check it out to see what all was wrong with it.
Even though it was clear he was slammed and busy, he took time out to check out the vehicle.
He knows what he is talking about, and loves what he does. He clearly is biased towards Subarus, but that's exactly the kind of person you want checkin' out your Sub. -

Paul is a good old fashioned honest mechanic. I've had him do thousands in work on my car, and I've never had to go back for a correction. - Even installing an item he had not handled before. It was right the first time.
This shop specializes in Subaru performance, and Paul is very knowledgeable on the subject. -

So it seems like all I've been doing is getting my subie (Christine) serviced more then ever. Well this time I went to Db Tuned to get a bj (brake job). Service was awesome. Paul (owner) is nothing but friendly, honest and straight forward. He'll tell you straight up when something doesn't look right or if something was installed incorrectly. If it's something that's quickly correctable, he will just go ahead and correct it. Always giving advice and tips on how to take care of your car.
Db Tuned primarily specializes in Subaru's but also does work on Mitsubishi's and other Japanese cars. Db Tuned is one of the few places I'll take Christine in for service. It's a drive for me, but well worth it. -

Stumbled upon this place when my Infiniti I35 started making a weird noise. Paul was able to identify the problem within minutes. He is a very technical guy and definitely knows his way around an engine. Needless to say, I've found my mechanic! Paul's honest, his prices are fair and I never have to worry about being duped. As a woman who doesn't know much about engines (and I would suspect a lot of guys out there don't either--but might not admit it) I feel very comfortable with my vehicle in Paul's hands and wouldn't hesitate to recommend him to anyone.

PAUL AND ADAM ROCK!! If you live in the sac area and have a sick whip, this is the place. I had Paul build me a motor for my STI and so far so good. Paul has been more than accomadating and a pleasure to do biz with.

I've never had an issue with these guys, they always do a good job, they're friendly and treat you like they've known you for years. I've had multiple issues with my car over time, and Paul is always reasonable. He's a smart guy, and definitely has helped me out when I've had car problems.

Paul, the owner, is a buddy of a friend of mine. He decided to graciously take on the project of fixing the AC in my Honda, which he doesn't even specialize in. It turned out perfect, and while under my hood, noticed that a couple other things needed to be replaced, so he replaced them and showed me the broken parts that he replaced. He's an honest and incredibly nice guy. Thanks Paul!

I came in to Paul's shop because it was highly recommended on yelp and other sites. My 100% stock 2003 Subaru WRX was running rough, and I could not figure out why. Paul said he'd do some diagnosis and then report back. He reported back that it was most likely a blown headgasket, and that it would be over $2,200 in parts and labor to fix.
He took roughly 1 week to fix the car, and when I got it back he said the issue wasn't the blown headgasket, but was actually the timing belt tensioner (roughly $300 to replace). When I've told this to other Subaru mechanics, they've said that's one of the first things he should have checked.
After I got the car back there were several other problems that weren't there BEFORE Paul worked on the car:
1. The headlights would turn on and I couldn't turn them off.
2. The emergency brake light would turn on, when I was driving the car. When I stopped and pulled up the emergency brake, the brake light went OFF.
The fact that Paul missed a simple problem and turned it into a larger and more expensive one (which he financially benefitted from), as well as there being problems with the car after I got it back are a testament to his workmanship.
I later took my car to Subaru Specialists (in Sacramento) and had excellent quality work done for a fair price. Apparently Paul (DBTuned) was a beginning mechanic there and then went off to start his own business because he wanted to do performance tuning, before he actually got a good amount of experience under his belt.
I am thoroughly disappointed with the work (and price) I paid at DBTuned, and I haven't been back since.Comment from Paul D. of DB Tuned 10/6/2010

Thanks to all you Yelpers, I found this diamond in the Rocklin. After reading the reviews and needing our air conditioning fixed in our Subaru Outback, DB Tuned was the place to go. I could not believe there was a place close to me that specialized in Subarus. After talking with Paul on the phone I was there that day. He explained in laymen's terms what could be wrong with the air conditioning. He told us if it was the O-rings it wasn't going to cost much. Of course if it was something else it would cost us. He then let us watch a $10 test that he didn't charge us for. The die was leaking out of two spots. Luckily where the O-rings were. Two days later, (we haven't paid anything yet) he fixed the problem. The air conditioning is working awesome and we let him know we would bring in the Subaru to him for everything!!!! Of course, I'm bringing my Honda Accord in to Paul next week to fix a door remote problem. Yes, I will trust him with all of our cars! Even if you just need a simple oil change give Paul a call!
