I like local. I also like unpredictable. Safe, staid, prissy and pretentious bore me to no end, whether it be people or places.

So if you want things on the safe side with things that have to be "just so", avoid the Bahia Cabana Beach Bar at all costs. You'll just freak out over shady looking local characters, loud Southern Fried music and vacationers having a really good time. And the occasional rodent.

But if you're one of those folks that don't mind sharing your food with a flyby pelican, magpie, or possibly the dude on his 4th margarita sitting one table over, the Bahia Cabana Beachbar/Restaurant is a lot of fun. I've never gotten past the appetizers, especially the Smoked Fish Dip (with pickled jalepeos), the conch fritters, and conch chowder (red based and tomato-y). There's never any need to order more. All are PERFECT with cold Red Stripe and don't put a dent in your vacation budget.

The beachbar/restaurant is located in the back of the Days In Bahia Cabana Beach Resort, but we were just there for the munchies, beer and a view of the fishing and sportboats coming in and out of the inlet. The bar/restaurant is open to the air, with enough covering to keep from frying your hide in the SoFL sun and it has a great local feel, despite being smack in the middle of tourist central.

It was "rustic" enough for me to totally disregard the water rat scurrying along a nearby retaining wall, which may explain the lack of tourists. But hey, that happens along the water here in Southern Maryland all the time, no big deal. And he didn't ask for a bit of my Smoked Fish Dip, so it was all good.

Great location for a hotel and reasonably priced for what it is...a block from the beach and marina, close to the Galleria Mall in Ft. Lauderdale, and easy access to the freeway to go south to Miami or north to Boca Raton.

Free to park, even to valet...which is good.  Restaurant and bar as well as pool and spa are on the premises...also good.

The rooms themselves I'd say are so-so...nothing special but relatively decent.  Some even have kitchens and a dinette set if you want to stock up on grub to eat in your room.

The place is kind of run down and definitely NOT luxurious by any means but it does the job and is a great place to put your head down.
