When I flew out from LA to check out Wellesley College, people raved about how beautiful the campus is, and how Mona Lisa Smile was filmed here...blah, blah, blah.  Um...excuse me...remember?...I live in LA...where everything is beautiful and all the stars live.  This does not impress me.  BUT I was impressed by the collection of art at the Davis Museum.  For a college art museum this collection is amazing...AND it's free for everyone!  Woohoo!  Now THAT excites me!

Although I have often willingly forked over the money for airfare, both domestically and internationally, to a city for the sole purpose of exploring it's various museums, I wouldn't do so just to see this collection alone.  However, if I was in the Boston area I would certainly head out to Wellesley to check out the Davis Museum, even if I had to rent a car to do so.  It's worth your time and money, especially when you factor in free admission to boot.

Kudos to the first president of Wellesley College who founded the museum over 120 years ago, and to all of the generous alumnae and donors who have made their acquisitions possible.

Impressive...

I am a bit biased as I do some work at the Museum, but right now there is an incredible instatllation of contemporary Chinese art work featuring Zhang Huan and Xu Bing that everyone needs to check out.

It will be closing for renovations for a while in the Summer, so you should make an effort to get out and see if before then.

What a surprise this place was!

I went to see the Warhol stuff they had for an Art History assignment.

A very impressive collection for a free college museum.  It had a couple Warhol's, a De Kooning, and many other works that you would not expect a college to have it.

The virtual aids at the seats offer very good insight and are very well done.

Overall, a must see if you are an art appreciator and are in the area.

It's a fun museum, but I probably would not make a special trip.  The collection was recently remounted.  It's very organic- rather than by time or period, the pieces are mounted in groups by thematic elements.

Being at Wellesley, it often has temporary exhibits exploring female artists and feminism (past exhibits include Global Feminisms and Black Womanhood).  The museum puts on a lot of free cultural events and movies, so check the website beforehand.

The museum is small, only a few floors (there is an elevator) and usually very empty.  It could be very fun with children.  There's free parking next to the museum.  The cafe across from the entrance (Collins Cafe) serves lunch and coffee.

now that i've been to many museums post wellesley, i still think back to all the times i've been to the davis museum, for an exhibition i took for granted during that time, for events that i just went to without realizing the beautiful location it is in. maybe it's cuz it's inside my college but dang, this museum brings back a lot of memories.

Davis Museum has been reinstalling their collection over the past year or so.  And doing it beautifully.  It's an impressive collection, housed in a beautiful building.  And, as a college museum, they're able to do some really thought provoking/topical exhibitions.   Every fall and spring they present 3 or 4 small-medium special exhibitions.
