Davies Manor started out as a log cabin in the 1830s, and gradually expanded over time to a two-story log-and-chink house that has been beautifully preserved with period furniture and other interesting displays.

We had an afternoon to kill in Memphis, so we thought we'd take the kiddos to visit a plantation (since we don't have too many of those in Chicago).  They had studied the Civil War and slavery in school, so they really got a lot out of the experience.  Our docent gave us all sorts of information about the history of the house and the family that lived there for generations, growing it into a successful plantation.

There are two or three small outbuildings on the grounds, but they are not open to walk through, just to peek in the windows.  There was a "sharecropper's" cabin, but no mention of how the slaves lived.  Is that a hush-hush thing in the South, or what?

If you are driving from Memphis, be sure to have a giggle at the "Morning Wood" housing development a few blocks away.
