I love this place! Thank you Yelp users! That's how I found it and it's now my go to place downtown.

The alteration was actually pretty damned hard. The fabric was stretchy and the finished hemline was perfectly straight. Awesome.

The only reason I even gave this place a star is because the sew job was actually pretty good.  Granted, I could've done without the d-bag attitude that "David", "Vlad" (whatever the hell his name is) likes to dish out.  Please don't throw my jeans at me just because I asked for a rush job... I work in your building, David and you were so highly recommended... It's too bad I will NEVER come back here and will tell others to stay away - unless they like to have clothes thrown at them with a nasty attitude to go along with! So very sad :-(

I went into "David's" yesterday based on all the good reviews. The weird thing is, depending on whether you look on the business card, the front door, or Yelp, it's variously called David's, Nadia and David's, or Nadia and Vladimir's. I'm not sure how -- or if -- 'David' is an anglicization of 'Vladimir', but whatever, it doesn't matter.

There were a few people in there being fitted when I arrived, which is kind of funny: everyone sits around watching everyone else have their clothes pinned back. And it was a very Rainbow Coalition mix, which was great. After about twenty minutes it was my turn, and Nadia, who is wonderfully sweet with a thick Russian accent, quickly and expertly marked seven pairs of pants for hemming. When I asked to get them back today, she made a sad face and begged for some extra time but after hearing the source of my urgency relented.

The price was extremely reasonable -- I consider $10 per pair on a rush order to be a bargain. My pants came out great; the length is perfect as measured, and Nadia did some special thinig with the jeans she called 'preserving the original hem.' I don't know what it is, but my friend who sews was very admiring.

Two notes: They're cash-only, and it's hard to park; the Metreon garage at 5th and Mission is probably your best bet.

For price, responsiveness, and personality, though, this place is tops.

Looking at other reviews it seems like they do a great job on hemming (even for me they do -- I've liked the work on my trousers) and the trousers I've brought to have taken in a little have also come out alright.  Unfortunately, I have to give them 4 stars for sussing up a great sport coat whose sleeves I wanted shortened.  Rather than taking it up at the shoulders (to preserve the button placement) they shortened it at the ends and did about a a 75% good job.  They really should've mentioned if taking it up at the shoulders wasn't possible.

If you've got something that's really complicated or dear to you, I must  recommend Franz Gutierrez (166 Geary #403, (415)298-0577) as a great sartorialist.  He started at Wilkes Bashford and then worked several years at Neiman Marcus before starting his own shop here.  If it absolutely needs to be done right, with a great eye, and you don't mind paying more for it go see him.

I'll add to the long list of raves for this place.
They did a great job on hemming 2 pairs of pants and are  conveniently located in the Flood Building for lunchtime trips during the work week.
Easy, professional, everything came back to me the proper length and looking exactly like it should.

*Most tailor shops will get four stars or below from me because you know they can do that shit faster and cheaper in Asia. I'm talking, in 5 minutes for free or less than a dollar. My stateside experiences are forever tainted. Boo.

Fairly good work, can be very fast, and it's reasonably priced, but not the second coming like some people make it out to be.  David and Nadia are very conservative in their tailoring choices, and they push back a lot when, say, you want a short break in the trousers.

Only one bad experience:  I had one pair of pants finished, and the hem is visible from the outside.  It was kind of a fussy fabric (a thin grey sharkskin), but that's still not very good worksmanship.

This is my tailor of choice.  I'm a shorty and must get my normal-people pants petite-ified all the time, and I can get them altered with the original seam intact for about $15.  It's a reasonable price to pay considering the professional service & results.

I do recommend coming in with your own pair of shoes to determine proper pant length.  And yes, I remember getting lost the first time I stopped by, so to help lessen any confusion, they're located above Anthropologie.

I dropped off a pair of jeans here to get them hemmed (with the original hem intact). And before I got them back, I was kind of worried because some  people were telling me about how its better to get your denim hemmed at Nordstroms ($18) because it is more reliable than a local mom&pop place...

But they were wrong!! I am in LOVE with the way my jeans fit now, the length is perfectttt. And it was 3 dollars ($15) cheaper than Nordstroms would be, which satisfies the Asian in me. The location is so convenient too, it's right above Anthropologie (which I wouldn't have known if I didn't read the other yelp reviews ... so thank you, because otherwise I would have gotten lost!).

I'm definitely coming back here if I need to get jeans hemmed.

After my very negative tailor experience before, working with Norah on my bridesmaid dress was a breeze. She pinned my dress a couple of different ways so I could see which one I liked the best.  It was done quickly and easily. It was not the cheapest I was quoted, but I was willing to spring for good service!!

Update: CASH ONLY! Still 4 stars because of the quality, ease and speed of the whole tailoring transaction.

I agree with everyone's post here.

I have been coming here for a couple of years. They do a great job and are fast. The prices are very reasonable for the quality of work.

I went in there two weeks ago with a pair of pants around 1PM. She told me to go have lunch and come back in 15 minutes. Came back, the pants were done. Perfect.

Very pleased with this place...I got my jeans back in one day.

Although I found it odd that they asked me if I wanted original hem or just altered on my jeans, it's an industry standard now to keep the OG hem in tact.

Either way, they did a fabulous job and they are just so nice! I'd totally go back, $15 in this city is a steal.

This place sounded great from most of the reviews here, but my experience this morning was kinda weird. I went by first thing to drop off a couple pairs of jeans to get hemmed. There were two gentlemen there and it only took a few minutes for one of them to mark my jeans to my specs. The other man filled out my claim tag and asked me when I wanted them back. (Price was $14 per pair.) I wasn't in a huge hurry but asked how soon they could be ready. He asked if Monday was OK. I told him I was hoping they'd be ready sooner. Figuring two days was reasonable, I asked if they could be ready by the end of tomorrow. After A LOT of sighing on his part and some awkward silence, he said "OK, maybe." Um, WTF does that mean? Apparently although the hours posted say 9am-6pm on Saturdays, he wasn't sure if they'd be open. Eventually I got him to agree that if I arrive by 1:30 tomorrow he'll be there.

Update: My jeans were ready when I went back the following afternoon and the place was hoppin with a couple other customers, so not sure what all the fuss was about. They did a great job on the hem so it all worked out in the end. And by some funny coincidence as I walked down Market St. afterwards, a girl randomly stopped me and asked me about the length of my jeans so I was able to elighten her (and show examples) about the possibilities of restoring original hem.

The only tailor I go to now. No fuss service, just reliable, and very, very professional results.

Given my incompatibility with American sizing, I must have taken at least twenty items to them by now, and have had no complaints on any of them.

You can't beat the location either - next door to the Powell Street cable car turnaround.

Of all places I got quoted, this was the cheapest.  I had a bridesmaid dress that i payed almost 200 bucks for, so of course i wanted the cheapest alteration place.  They were the most reasonably priced, and did a great job with the dress as well.  Cute couple runs it and you can tell they put their whole heart into every item.

I've never had to take my jeans in to get them hemmed, but it seems like jeans nowadays are coming out a little longer in length than normal.  Either that, or I'm shrinking.  Since I doubt it's the latter, I decided to take my new BR jeans in to get them hemmed up.  I decided I didn't want them to hang past my shoes where I can drag and trample it.  I had heard about David's shop and decided to put my jeans in his (or Nadia's) hands to fix.  $13 to hem jeans with the original hem intact.  Sounds like a deal to me.  Nadia said that she could have it ready next day...wow!  I wasn't in any rush, but it's nice to know that they can do it.  Came back a couple of days later and found them to fit just right.  I'm sold.   Nice folks.  Very professional.

    david's is not that cheap!

after reading all the reviews, i split my giant pile of clothes to be tailored into two piles.  the easy jobs went to david's.  the more difficult/expensive items to ernesto's (also in the same building.)

sadly, i found david's to be only slightly cheaper.  they both did acceptable work but remember, ernesto got the difficult jobs.  (FYI he's amazing at suit jackets.)  the service at ernesto's was much, much better.  the russian lady here chatted with this other lady the entire time.  plus she really rushed me since they were closing couple hours earlier that day.

so now my official sf tailors are ernesto's and jacky.
    -----------------------------------------
ok, just knocked off a star in a fit of rage.  i finally got to re-trying this dress they worked on.  it was a super easy job, just needed to be taken in on the sides.  now it is so small it's biting me in the armpits, it doesn't drape right anymore and i'm not sure if this mess is even fixable.  to make matters worse, this is practically a one of a kind vintage piece.   i am PISSED!  now i have to bring it to ernesto and see if he can salvage it.

FOR GOD'S SAKE BRING YOUR OWN SHOES. if you forget to bring the shoes you're wearing with the jeans you're getting hemmed, you MUST WEAR THE STORE SHOES. can you stand on your tip-toes to simulate wearing heels? NO, she said sternly. MUST. WEAR. SHOES. (*pointed at row of communal shoes*) i nearly fainted.

oh, but other than that, it was quite good. i had a nice pair of jeans hemmed, keeping the original hem, and it cost $15. and really, my failure to wear proper footwear was not their fault at all.

i LOVE jeans, i practically live in them! i remember the olden days when i had to get them hemmed w/o the original being left on...it just ruined the look of my jeans. luckily a few years ago a co-worker referred me to this tailoring shop. i brought in my jeans and picked them up hemmed with the original intact...perfect! (mental note: wear heels so length is prefect).

also, i have a tush. i'm sure a lot of girls know about that dreaded "gap" between your jeans and your lower back. one day david was pinning my jeans and when i lifted my shirt he must have seen the "gap". so he pulls on the back belt loop and says "i'll take in." i was skeptical at first but the next day when i put those jeans on, no gap! it doesn't even look like it was taken in either! so i have the original hem minus the "gap" for $12! SCORE! and if you're in a rush, they usually have it done within 2 hrs...on a Saturday!

After reading the reviews I decided to give this place a try. I had a blazer and a pair of pants I needed to get altered. I had to shorten the sleeves and take in the blazer. For the pants, I had to take in the waist/seat and shorten them. The total came up to be $122 which I thought was a bit expensive. I had all that done for $52 at the Men's Wearhouse for my last suit. We'll see how everything turns out when I pick them up tmrw...

My stubby legs love David's Tailor Shop.  Until a few weeks ago I only owned Banana Republic jeans because their petite size actually fits my legs and I had a tailor phobia.  No more!  I had a pair of jeans that I bought almost a year ago and could never wear because of leg  length that i finally had hemmed at David's.  They were very nice and my jeans look great.  So affordable too!

I must say I really love this place for its great service, quality work and very reasanoble prices. I come here for all my alteration needs. Recently, Nadja did a great job on the evening gown I was going to wear to a weeding. I recommended her to a bride, who came here with her bridesmaids. Bride's dress required a very detailed work. In the end, bride was super excited for a great work Nadja did for everyone in the wedding party. Vladimir is amazing when it comes to men's suits, shirts and pants. My husband comes here too and he loves the work they do here. Definitely The Best in SF!

i'm giving this place 2 stars because the hems they did were decent, but i have serveral complaints:
    1) the guy didn't ask me what kind of hems i wanted on my pants and just assumed i wanted original hems. one of my jeans was frayed on the end because they were too dang long so they dragged on the ground. instead of a nice, new clean hem, i got the original frayed nasty hem put back on.
    2) when i picked up my pants, there were 2 people ahead of me in line. i patiently waited my turn, then another girl walked in and jumped ahead of me just as the other two people were finished. i'm like, wtf?!! i say something and the woman (who acts like she doesn't understand a word of english) just looks at me like she doesn't know what my problem is. i start explaining that i've been waiting in line and then the linejumper calls from the dressing area, "if it helps, i was here before, but i had to go get cash, so technically i was in line before you." uh, honey, if you leave the line, you go back to the end of it when you come back. this isn't the post office. and again, the woman acts like she doesn't know what the heck i'm talking about.
    3) since i'm so pissed off about the fact that i've been treated like dirt, i feel indignant and ask for a receipt (since they demand cash for payment). after i get home and have cooled off, i start back on another tirade because i realize she's given me someone else's claim check as a receipt (probably ms. linejumper's, the big ho).

the price was okay and it's on the way home from work, but i could definitely do without the "i don't speak english i don't know what you're talking about" attitude. if you know enough to start a business, then you know enough to treat customers with respect.

wow...  i didn't think it was possible in san francisco, but the service i got bordered on hate crime.
i bought an airline stewardess outfit for halloween -- it's hilarious.  but for it to fit my linebacker shoulders, i got an extra large.  i had to get the rest of it tailored down.
looking back, i should have left immediately when the guy refused to give me service once he saw i held a woman's dress. i should have just left.  but he went and got nadia who came out and did the pins thing.
it was so obvious they didn't want to service me.  i can't decide if it was better for them just to say no, that they don't work on halloween outfits, that tailoring for gay people is against their religion, etc.  in any case i just went there today to pick it up.  since it was over $120 in alterations (really high price too for just taking the waist in) i asked to try it on.  when i did, they both went to the back of the room. neither stayed to check to see if it fit or if i like the tailoring.  they only emerged to take money.  no thank you, no have a good day.  it was one of the most unpleasant afternoons ever.  i can't believe it happened in sf over a halloween outfit.  needless to say, don't come here if you're gay.
