only eaten her for lunch, which was really good. The bread is really good. Both times I've been, I've had pizza. Thin, chewy, tasty crust with very flavorful toppings!
This place is great, that's been covered in the other reviews. All I have to add is that when I ate there, the lemon creme brulee stood out. It was absolutely fantastic.
Our recent visit to Portland proved it to be a place that beckons the foodie in all of us. David's, a restaurant that seems to have been around for a few years, proved itself to be a fine Portland institution. Although there were a few mis-steps with the food, it was quite good on a cold, wind swept Portland night.
I had their Maine lobster dinner that included a bowl of clam chowder as the first course, followed by a whole lobster, mussels, corn on he cob and mashed potatoes. The chowder was fantastic! It was rich and creamy, with a healthy zing from fresh herbs (thyme, I think). I was not the gloppy, pasty stuff that is the down fall of many a restaurant chowder. The lobster was perfectly done, as were the mussels, They were served in a bowl with a fabulous, rich broth with clam juice, wine (perhaps) and other ingredients. I don't know where they get corn on he cob this time of year, but it was okay. The down fall were the potatoes. They arrived on a place luke warm and go cold very quickly. Still, they were house made and studded with garlic. My partner had a duck confit tart that was the hit of the night! Savory with lots of duck on puff pastry. It was delectable and no greasy! That was followed with marinated spears of beef tenderloin, also quite good. The seasonal vegetables were beautifully presented but bland. The wasabi mashed potatoes were also good, but served lukewarm. As with my mashed potatoes, they got cold very quickly. For dessert, we shared their take on apple tart. It was slices of Granny Smith apples on a small disk of pastry, served with shaving of five year old Vermont cheddar. I different take on your standard tart.
We had wine and a cocktail. The restaurant sports a nice wine list and a well stocked bar. Their decaf coffee was fresh brewed an delicious.
The decor was eclectic. They've done their best with a ground floor space in a modern office building. It could be refreshed a bit, but offered a feeling on being a neighborhood dining establishment.
We enjoyed David's and can see going back on another trip to Portland.
Love the Pork Oscar! What a dish, great scene looking out to monument square.
Have just been to David's in the past week or so. My friends and I were looking for a place in Portland that had outdoor dining available but still had a decent menu, so we did some Googling and decided upon David's Restaurant in Monument Square. I'll have to admit I was impressed when we arrived. We were seated promptly, although we missed out on the outdoor table, and it wasn't long before a waiter came to take our order. I ordered an alcoholic drink from their drink menu, and the waiter seemed confused when I called it by name, and wondered what was in it. They were out of one of the ingredients anyway. He told me that if he could find any suitable replacement, he'd use it, and I placed a back-up order just in case. I still have no idea what he brought me back to the table. The seating was a bit cramped, but the atmosphere was nice. We were able to sit by the window, which offered a decent view of Congress St and the square. One thing I do have to say that I was quite disappointed about: portion size. I ordered and Avocado Caprese salad (which I paid roughtly 10 bucks for) and was shocked to find only 6 slices of tomato, avocado, and mozzarella on my plate. Definitely not worth the money for that. However, my friend ordered a small sized pizza for about the same amount of money and I would definitely say she got more bang for her buck. The three of us ordered dessert, which took about 30 minutes to arrive back at our table. Had we been in a hurry, this would've been terribly inconvenient, but it afforded us an opportunity to digest our meals and have some nice conversation. While we were dining, a waitress overturned a few glasses accidentally, which shattered next to us on the floor. It wasn't really a big deal, but it was a good 10 minutes before anyone came to clean it up.
All in all, David's seems like a very nice establishment with a pretty varied menu. I'd skip the salad and try a gourmet pizza, and maybe stick with a glass of wine instead of a mixed drink or cocktail.
Really good restaurant. They have a lot of variety on the menu, from serious seafood to vegetarian pasta. The service is good. Long wine list.

Five stars for food. Four of us went for a friend's bday dinner and were so intrigued by the apps that we decided to forego entrees. We started with a veggie pizza that we shared. It was amazing - one of the best pizzas I've ever had, and then followed it with a group of appetizers - tapas style. My favorite was the lobster risotto, though the wrapped goat cheese with toasted leeks was pretty phenomenal as well. We sampled multiple deserts - nothing beats Maine blueberries - would stick with the berry crisp. Yum!
Our waitress was pretty rude/abrupt to start off but warmed up. Maybe we just got her at a bad moment. Other than that everything was great.
Holy moley and wow. Best meal I've had in Portland, and that's a tough title to bestow in such a foodie town. Bartender was spot on and chef-owner knows what's up. I ordered vegetarian fettuccine - easily the most boring thing on any menu and the easiest to make gross. It was awesome! Boyfriend said the steak was in the top few he's ever eaten. A bit too much of the excellent Hendrick's cocktail the bartender served prevents me from recalling what our friends had, but everyone was fat, dumb, and happy by the time we waddled out of the restaurant.
Oh yeah, they serve garlic knots in the bread basket! MMM great stuff. The clam chowder was also the mac daddy. I can't wait to go back.

I got the Yankee BBQ pizza and it was delish! The salad my friend got was also good, it had very fresh ingredients.
We went for lunch, so I didn't get any rolls/bread. But, I saw the bread from afar and it looked reallly good.
The best restaurant in Portland by far! I have eaten here everytime I have been in town and each meal is better than the last. Try the Atlantic salmon -- it is absolutely wonerful! Last time I was there I had the fresh sea scallops and they were marvelous! Owner/chef Tom is a culinary miracle worker! The service is great and the staff is friendly. I love this place!
It's my favorite place in town! The food is always fab & the waitstaff
couldn't be nicer. You can spend alot more at other restaurants
in Portland, but you won't get a better meal. Oh, & the martinis are
perfect!
Seriously to die for! Great for dinner and a glass of wine PS they have tons to choose from.
