We stumbled upon Davenport's after a 20 mi ride on the Blackstone River Bikeway (a fantastic and beautiful trail for all you riders). We had just checked out a nearby "family tavern" that received good Yelp reviews. The place was a dump. We did an about face and, tired and hungry, drove to Davenport's. The photo laden, laminated menus and homogenous look of the place -- mid-price chain restaurant all the way -- were off-putting, but things got much better from there. Our server, Craig, was excellent. He was good natured, efficient and had a lot of "character." We started with an ample portion of perfectly cooked fried calamari ($8.49) accompanied with banana peppers and a mediocre marinara. Wife and son each had an enormous chicken pot pie ($10.49) that looked down home picture perfect and, I'm told, tasted great. I had veal Marsala served over penne ($16.99), at my request. I don't like long pasta. The portion was ginormous. So much for the calories I burned biking. There were lots of 'shrooms, the veal was cooked MR, and the penne was al dente. Yum. All meals are served with a choice of veg, salad or soup. Last night there were six soup options. We each had Portugese Kale. They didn't skimp on the chorizo, kale or beans, but the latter were undercooked.

Davenport's has a solid list of beer and cocktails. My wife had a huge Margarita in a goblet (schooner to you Chicagoans) for $8. It was 3X the standard serving. I had a couple of pints of Sam Lager at $3.98 each. Junior had a private label root beer which he enjoyed. Dessert was an enormous slice of moist, tasty Heath bar cake ($5.99) that fed all three of us.

To be clear, this is not fine dining, but the food was very solid, the service was excellent and the restaurant was clean.

Davenports is old reliable. You know what to expect. You won't be blown away but the meal will taste good, the service will be fine and you can count on getting out of there in decent time.

Last night's meal was exactly that. No one's meal looked delicious but no one complained either. My soup and salad were okay. The server was attentive and sweet. And the bill was very reasonable.

It's a family restaurant to a T. Friday, Saturday or Sunday nights during the early bird hour expect to wait a long time.

My only complaint last night were the rolls. They tasted like something Pillsbury rolled out. Not good.

First of all, one star is better than what I would really like to give this restaurant. I had a party of 58 people at the east providence location. 20 of those people came down with the Norovirus the day after having the function. I called the restaurant to report the illness, 2 days later the department of health investigated the situation. Not suprisingly, the health department did not find any source of where the Norovirus may have come from. The owner, Gregg Davenport, was apathetic, smug, cocky, ignorant, arrogant and pompous with me when it came to the situation. He has denied having any involvement in the illness of his guests and hides behind the department of health's investigation and results. Norovirus can be spread from an infected individual touching food and then that food being consumed. This function was for a special occassion for my daughter. This was supposed to be a nice day where family and friends came together and celebrated. Davenports ruined that experience for my guests and Gregg had no intention of making the situation right. He is a terrible business owner. If you want to dine out, spend your money somewhere else. If you want to support a Rhode Island small business, DO NOT support this one. Bottom line: do not eat at Davenports. I never will again.

I love this place! It's very Chelo's or Gregg's ish if you're into that type of thing. Cute, family oriented, decent priced home cooked meals.

My grandparents' favorite lunch spot. Very nice service. Quick turnaround on orders. Food quality matches the price. Nothing great but never disappointing either.

Service was excellent for the type of restaurant; we were in and out in under 45 minutes. The place was pretty busy considering it was a Monday night -- albeit Memorial Day.

I ordered the lobster roll off the new menu, and I was pleasantly surprised when it arrived: lightly toasted, buttered roll overflowing with large chunks of claw meat. The curly fries on the side were perfectly seasoned and crispy, and even the pre-made cole slaw was decent. Lastly, at $16.99, the price was right.

This was my first time dining at Davenport's; I had previously ordered take-out from there, which was also good. This is a great, local restaurant for a quick meal of American cuisine. It's not gourmet by any means, but it is good comfort food.

While visiting my father in-law from California, he suggested Davenports. As we entered it felt as if we were entering a time machine back to the 70's

Ramsey's Kitchen Nightmares please help this place out. The decor was old and worn. The staff was non-caring and even said they don't eat at their. That was soon to be understood. We should have taken the hint, paid for our drinks and left, but instead we ordered the St. Patrick's Day special - Corned beef sandwiches and fries.

Someone needs to help the cook out and teach him/her how to carve the Corned beef. What we got were poorly sliced/peaces of corned beef with no fl aver, and very dry.

When we come back to R.I we will not be back to Davenport's.

Hands down. One of the best seafood chowders I have ever tasted in my life. I want to bathe in it. Seriously....the chowder was so full of seafood and was so creamy. It was an absolute delight. I went to Davenport's for a drink and a nibble with a friend. Aside from the seafood chowder, we split an order of stuffed mushrooms. I was impressed with the size (that's what she said) of them and the amount of cheese and seafood stuffing.

My bloody mary was thirst quenching albeit a little too peppery for my tastes but still solid. For a crock of soup, a few mushrooms and a bloody Mary, I paid about $16 including a 20% tip. I would definitely come here again for a lunch. My only complaint was the fact that my friend and I sat at the bar and had to wait 10 minutes for someone to come serve us. I've never waited that long at a restuarant bar for someone to come over. This wasn't due to lack of employees either. There were at least 3 other waitresses standing around hanging out truly not caring at all about their job...which I'll admit happens, we're all human but they need to work on their response time.

Friday after work.  In I walk, rather in a hurry because I have to attend a meeting later.  I order.  Sirloin very rare,  mashed potato with gravy on the side, salad with Italian on the side, bottle of beer.  Easily and simply requested.

Beer arrives, nice and cold.  Salad comes, Italian poured all over.  I send it back.  "Italian ON THE SIDE please - this isn't what I requested."  Server takes it back, albeit a bit huffily.  He seems to be carrying the weight of his woes with him.

Shortly after salad arrives a second time, steak arrives.  I cut into it.  Medium well.  WTF?  But I've no time to send it back.  Cold and lumpy mashed potatoes have gravy poured all over them despite my instructions.

Oh well, they got the beer right.

I call for the check.  Server brings it and having just come from work I give him a hundred.  He looks at me expectantly.  "Do you want change, Sir?"

"One steak, one salad, potatoes, one beer.  You know - yes. I believe I DO want the change, thank you."  The unmitigated cheek of the fellow!

Server returns with my change which I pocket to the final penny.  I stand, thank him, and begin to walk out.  He follows.

    "er....Sir? Aren't you forgetting something?"

I turn.  "In point of fact, I am.  Steak not cooked the way I requested.  Cold lumpy potatoes.  Gravy on the side and salad dressing on the side were not served that way.  You tried to talk me into giving you all the change from a hundred dollar bill.  Am I forgetting something?  Yes.  I'm forgetting to write myself a note not to patronize this place again."

To a scattering of applause, I stalk out to keep tryst with my appointment...

They have to have changed since then, folks.  If they were still that bad, they'd be hanging on by the skin of their teeth.

The food here was pretty good. cheesesticks, hamburger and sweet potato fries, and some cheesecake type dessert. It was crowded on a Friday so it must be somewhat popular. The staff is very nice.

'The restaurant your grandma eats at'

The emphasis here is on time-honored classics. Or, If you prefer honesty-- The same ol' shit. Pretty fatty too.

The food is cooked to a uniform mushiness- goes easy on those dentures. If you're prone to dumping your soup in your lap you'll be glad to know they don't serve anything hot. They take your personal safety seriously-- the food is soft, lukewarm, and lightly seasoned, and I think the ends of all the pickle wedges been filed down.

Our waitress was a total space cadet. She also had negligible short term memory. It was kinda entertaining and funny in an odd way. "What will she do next?" we asked ourselves.

Another funny feature: the restrooms. The men's room is located right where the host stand is--  where everyone loiters while waiting for their table. When I think about what men are capable of on the toilet, and considering my own personal triumphs in the crapper, I consider this an odd place for a bathroom.  "Duchaines party of 6 your table is ready PHwooooeewww! Here comes big Ed fresh off the can.

The ladies room is on the other side. You have to go behind the bar to get to it. Don't trip over the janitor's bucket.

It's not a dislikable place. Sadly it'll eventually get killed off by a big chain restaurant.

I have to say I was impressed. I was not expecting good food.

I had a club sandwich which was just fine.

They have a large selection for a menu ranging anywhere from steaks to salads and soup.

    Prices are extremely reasonable.

    A great family restaurant.

Awesome Seafood Chowder. Hands down best ever. Probably the only reason i'd go here.

Pretty much all their food is frozen, nothing fresh. Very blah menu, not innovative at all. A little like a watered down Chelo's. Service is hit or miss, the staff always seems to be changing. Never seem the same face twice whenever ive been in for the chowder.

But old people like the mushy, overcooked food, so at least they ahve a demographic they are clearly marketing to.

This place has great food, friendly staff and something for everyone.  I especailly enjoy their chicken/spaghetti dishes... The Italian trio wasn't anything special. On the plus side if you can't think of what to buy you "older" family members? Mine are always pleased with a gift certificate to this restaurant. You can always drive by and see that it's a popular place to be.

I brought my parents here, to treat them to lunch. It was our first time here. There weren't many people there because it was a sunday afternoon. When we sat down it took some time for the waitress to great us, and when she did it took quite some time to receive our drinks (water and tea). Once we placed our App and lunch order, that was when the nightmare really began. It took about 25 minutes to receive our appetizers(assorted tray). When we did get it, it was cold and thrown on the plate. The food was just plopped on the tray, no garnish..nothing and it was all obviously microwaved. It was definately not worth the $14 they were charging. The waitress seemed non caring and aloof when we complained. Then, it took an additonal 30 minutes for the entrees to arrive. My mother had the salmon dish that..again...was microwaved and cold, additionally it had cold water on the plate from the microwaving process. We had waiting an unusually long time for food that was just awfull. We complained yet again but not even management cared, they offered to give us the apps on the house, but they were unedible anyway. We were disgusted and I was embarrased since this was a treat for my parents. I'll never go back.
