Fish for the win.
My good friend and dining companion is quite the culinary enthusiast. Excellent cook. Appreciation for quality. And while on a trip together to South America found him pricing a boat ride from Argentina to Uruguay just to try a famous dish.
He knows his food. So when he says the grilled fish tandoori marinated with herbs and spices is good, it's good.
We were also big fans of the chicken meatball curry and the cauliflower stuffed nun. Both a little unique. Both delicious.
Prices were on the cheap side, service on the friendly side and spice level on the hot side. Consumed water as quickly as the food.
Trust the foodie and the yelper. You won't regret it.1 Previous Review: Show all »

San Francisco, CA
I have to change my mind about this place because of their consistency. Unlike other SF Indian/Pakistani restaurants, I have never suffered inconsistency from Darbar.
I've been to Naan N' Curry and had a korma that tasted like pure salt, but the Lamb Korma at Darbar, which I order about 90% of the time (I've been probably 50-70 times), is always perfect.
When a product is good, it's easy to overlook it because of its lack of mistakes; it doesn't seem memorable because there's nothing to nitpick. That was the mistake I made with my first review of this place. It's consistent, cheap, delicious, and overall pleasant, and for that I happily change my previous four-star review to a solid five.1 Previous Review: Show all »

My girlfriend and I took a friend to Darbar for her first Indian food experience, and we definitely made a good decision in coming here. We found Darbar through Blackboard Eats SF, and ended up paying only $30 for an enormous dinner for three.
Highlights: extensive vegetarian menu, awesome naan choices (we got 2 orders of the peshwari naan and I totally could've ordered another), and fantastic rice pudding. My girlfriend loves lamb and she really enjoyed the lamb tikka masala she had.
The servers were friendly and attentive. They had no problem customizing my friend's dish or taking off the discount we got through Blackboard Eats. We'll definitely be coming back here! -

Went to Darbar today for their $7.99 lunch buffet without expecting much since I'm not an Indian food fan, but I was definitely impressed. There were three different curries, deep-fried chickpeas, tandoori chicken with grilled onions, delicious and moist naan, a rice dish with a few vegetables mixed in, salad (fresh lettuce, cucumbers, tomatoes), chai tea, and rice pudding.
The staff was extremely accommodating and nice and the food overall was delicious, especially at such a reasonable price.
The one star off is for the dry chicken tikka masala, annoying front door that doesn't close automatically which lets in the draft every time someone comes in, and our party having to wait half an hour than the advertised opening time for the buffet to be set up. Small complaints, really. Can't wait to come back again! -

Bad service. Mediocre food.
Went with a Groupon and was turned away do to time restrictions on the deal. Went back during the proper time only to find the place poorly managed and understaffed. Since the line was out the door, we went and got manicures to kill time. The entire ordeal cost 2+hours and not worth it. -

I am a huge FAN of Chicken Tikka Masala, Nan Bread and Rice all together on one plate. I ate here two nights ago and the flavors and freshness came together as they should and I would say this is one of my Favorite go to restaurants here in San Francisco. The price was very reasonable and again, freshness is everything along with flavors that come out!
The owner is so kind and friendly as his goal is to make sure your dining experience is a pleasant one, and with his recipe's again, you can not go wrong here.
Thank you again.... -

First of all, we came here because of our coupon for $25. The waiter didn't happy. We placed our order then gave us this look since we didn't order more than the face value of the coupon. I made sure he know about our coupon. Eventually, we ordered more food to bring home. We had a hard time getting our check. Then when I got p to the counter, the check he gave me did not include the $25 coupon. If I had forgotten about the coupon I am sure I would have paid full price. Food was good but service can be much better

I have become very attached to Darbar because it has become my go to place to call when: 1) I'm too lazy too cook 2) get out of work to late to cook.
They have a delicious chicken tikka masala..paired with garlic naan and rice and I'm heaven. The masala is spicy and flavorful.
The staff is really nice and accommodating. I've never actually eaten at the restaurant, but they seem to be full every time I go in to pick up my order. I've stayed away from delivery because of others reviews on the horrible delivery service, but pick up has always been a great experience for me! -

Anyone who enjoys this restaurant has neither self-esteem nor taste buds.
Service took over 30 minutes for 3 simple dishes. The lamb samosas tasted like dry ground beef served in a defrosted puff pastry shell. The bangan bharta and chicken saag were both so watery and bland that given a blind taste test, I would be hard-pressed to differentiate between the two. Both were flavorless mush, the only difference being the 2 overcooked chunks of chicken in the chicken saag.
San Francisco, please try harder. -

Nice little restaurant. I have gone there many times and their food is consistently good. Sometimes I have gone there just for soup and samosa when I am not very hungry and it is a filling treat that doesn't cost much.
I went to this place a lot when I lived in San Francisco. Good food good value. -

I have only experienced take out food so I cannot yet comment on their service.
My parents actually bought the Lamb Biriyani and the Chicken Tikka Masala. Plus some naan. The three of us shared and even had left overs.
The rice dishes were both very flavorful and rich in spices. Lamb was very tender while the chicken was less so. Out of the two, I liked the Tikka Masala more. Sauce was jam packed with spices and super creamy. Naan was alright, a bit chewy and not as amazing as other places I have tried. Chicken was also very tender. This dish is def one of the best Tikka Masalas I've had from the different Indian restaurants I've visited thus far. -

Best Indian food I've found in the city so far, and it's so close to where I live. Woo hoo!
I recommend two dishes: baingan bharta (eggplant curry) & vegetable korma. The eggplant curry isn't cream based, and I've had friends who hate eggplant like this dish. Vegetable korma is a cream based curry - kinda like chicken tikka masala, except vegetables instead of chicken.
The naan at Darbar is sometimes burned, and the curries are on the oilier side. But... if you can get over the fact that Indian food is oily almost wherever you go, then Darbar is awesome.
Also... $7.99 lunch buffet comes w/ 3-4 curries, tandoori chicken, pakora, rice, naan, chai, papardam, and chutney. It's a steal. -

I originally heard of Darbar from my roommate's girlfriend. She's obsessed with this place. We arrived around 7 and the place was packed except for one open table which we were seated at near the front register so there were people sitting rather close to us waiting for their takeout order. After decided on our food it took a little while for the waiter to come take our order. I had the beef vindaloo which was disappointing in spiciness but overall a good dish. The warm naan was awesome.
The dishes were average size. The two of us finished rice, naan & 2 main dishes with no problem. Good value, completely average indian food.Listed in: SF Lovin'

Just had them deliver to us --- my wife had the Chicken Saag and I had the Chicken Vindaloo. We both thought our dishes were pretty amazing, though my wife did comment that the Saag was a little spicy, even though she told them that she wanted it mild. Delivery was quick (maybe 45 minutes from the time we ordered via Foodler), and the prices were reasonable. Was a good Yelp find -- will definitely be our go to curry place.

This place gets one star because I can't give it zero.
- The curry had half an inch of pure OIL that was separated and settling on top of it. Imagine that. What, were we all supposed to mix the disgusting amount of oil back in?
- The samosas we got were dry and bland.
- The naan was burned to the point where it should not have been sold.
- The chicken in the tikka masala was very very dry and overcooked.
- Everyone got curry that had been overcooked until it burned.
- All three of us were physically ILL after eating here. We went right to bed due to stomach pain and nausia.
Do not bother with this 'rastaurant'; it's the worst indian I've had in San Francisco. Fans of the cuisine do not want to pay to get sick on very low quality inedible food, and that's all you get at Darbar. It makes me also wonder about their health rating. -

I have walked past here many times and always thought about going in, but I never have. So when I saw I could get $10 in food for $5 through SF Weekly's DOTD, I figured what better time to try it finally.
I wish I hadn't waited so long! The food was incredible. By far my new favorite Indian Food in town! I got 2 orders of the Vegetarian Samosas, Papadams, a Vegetable Wrap, & Gulab Jamun. I got my order to go and ate it about 2 hours later.
First, the owner & waiter were extremely nice. The place smelled heavenly, and had a nice atmosphere. I'd like to come back and eat here sometime. Second, the prices are extremely reasonable, the bill was just over $15. They also offer an all you can eat lunch buffet for only $7.99 (they want $9.99 at Star India or India Palace) but I was there in the evening so the buffet area was empty.
I got home, expecting to have soggy but hopefully decent food. And somehow, the papadams were still fresh & crunchy. They were the perfect consistency, I wish I had 20 of them! I then tried the wrap which was just a bit spicy, and full of yummy stuff like bell peppers, potatoes & peas. All wrapped in a piece of Nan. My 10 month old loved it too.
I tried the samosas last. I was very impressed that they were also stil crunchy on the outside and fried perfectly. I was disappointed that the insides were very bland. But the tamarind sauce added some much needed flavor. It was very sweet and light. Had a hint of plum flavor.
My 13 year old loves Samosas and he fell in love with these, he wants to go back, and soon!
Finally, the gulab jamun. The texture of the balls was different than I was used to, but that wasn't a bad thing. Just a bit less spongey than I expected. The rose water flavor was exquisite.
Overall, I'll definitely return, SF Weekly did a good job getting you a new customer! -

Delivery is unbearably SLOW. We were told approx 45 min so called 1 hour after we ordered and the guy on phone said order JUST left, in other words: we will be sending out your order in the next 10-20 minutes. Our food didn't arrive until much, much later.
The vegetarian entrees we ordered (the okra entree and spinach entree) were not tasty: luke warm, no flavor, not fresh. The okra was stale-ish. Everything seemed reheated and none of it seemed to be prepared with love.
We didn't have high expectations.. but our experience with Darbar was definitely did not meet our already low expectations. Lesson learned.
1 star for the extremely polite and friendly delivery person. -

Good Indian lunch buffet. Selection is not the best, but what they do offer, they do a good job of. There's always unsweetened chai (sugar available at your own table), naan, thin crispy bread with seed (fennel?), chicken tikki masala (they call them butter chicken here), saffron rice (I see the color, but don't taste the saffron though), fried chick pea, one other meat item (either lamb or beef), two kinds of vegetarian dishes, lentil, spinache, eggplant ... it differs, plus a salad, a rice pudding type of dessert and a few kinds of condiments (chutney?)
Flavors are good. Prices are decent. -

1. Review of delivery from Darbar Restaurant.
2. Easy to order from http://Grubhub.com.
3. Delivery - Order places at 6:05 PM. Order delivered at 7:07 PM. Delivery time of 1 hour and two minutes. This was pretty much exactly at the estimated delivery time. So, delivery was prompt but not particularly fast. There is no delivery fee. The delivery person was polite and professional.
4. Order Minimum - High ($25)
5. Chicken Vindaloo - This was a very poor Chicken Vindaloo. The sauce was watery. It was very bland. The pieces of chicken were cut in large. The chicken was pretty tender. The potatoes were cooked correctly. They still had a little crispness left. There wasn't as much chicken and potatoes as I usually expect in a vindaloo.
http://tinyurl.com/3n4...
http://tinyurl.com/3mc...
6. Vegetable Samosa - This was a pretty good samosa. It was crisp on the outside. The flavors were good. It could have been kicked up a notch.
7. Garlic Naan - This was not very good naan. It was spongy and soggy. There was very little flavor of garlic.
8. Darbari Chawal (Rice) - The rice was very good.
9. Prices - Their prices were slightly on the high side for Indian food delivery.
1 Garlic Naan $ 2.99
2 Soft Drink $ 3.98
1 Vegetarian Samosas $ 2.50
1 Chicken Vindaloo $ 9.99
1 Darbari Chawal $ 2.99
2 Soft Drink $ 3.98
Subtotal $26.43
Tax $2.51
Total $28.94
10. Overall with delivery the quality of the food rules the day. I just did not find their food to be consistently good. While, on time, delivery of an hour is a little on the long side. Their prices are also a little higher than some. -

Walked past many times and never gave it a thought.
Bought a Groupon $12 gets you $25 and two of us couldn't do it! It was all so tasty, filling and inexpensive. We're going to have to bring a 3rd person next time.
The onion pakora were particularly intersting. Not the usual cold, crunchy lot. These were fresh, hot and somewhere between crisp and tender. MMM.
We had spicy on everything, but one dish was a bit more powerful than the rest, maybe it was the veg biryiani. Don't be shy! -
Review from Mike T.
New to the hood and this has become my go to Indian place so I really want to give it 4 stars as I haven't found anything better in the Polk Gulch area. I've eaten both the buffet at lunchtime and numerous take outs. The Naan is usually fresh and pretty high quality which has usually been a problem for me at most Indian places in SF, so for Naan I'd give it 4 or 5 stars.
The Chicken Tikka Masala is good but not great. I think I'm spoiled from Pakwan in the Mission and Naan and Chutney in the Lower Haight. Those are truly amazing. But, I keep going to this place because Shalimar across the street never answers their phone an is on the dirty side.
So even though I only give it 3 stars, if you want a buffet or take out, it's a solid choice if you're in the neighborhood. -

I ate at Darbar while in town on business. The interior is pretty typical for a sit down Indian joint. About a dozen tables, sitar music etc. I was the only customer at first, though a fellow diner came in later.
The waiter was pleasant and bright me a carafe of water, a good thing to have at an Indian restaurant.
I ordered vegatable samosas, garlic naan and chicken tikka masala. The samosas were very good, perfectly cooked and nicely spiced. The chicken tikka masala was good, though not among the best I've had. It was neither too creamy not too oily. Tbe chicken was nice and tender. However, the spicing was a little bland for my tastes. The naan, however, was awesome, cooked just right.
The total cost of my dinner was $14 excluding tip.
I would definitely return. Good food, great price. -

I very much enjoyed this place. The person I was with was Indian and he said it was perfection and my humble taste buds agreed wholeheartedly.
The lunch buffet was not vegetarian friendly, but they have a very inexpensive vegetarian selection on their main menu! Lots of options and big enough portion sizes that two entrees and two orders of naan filled two hungry eaters to the point where we were waddling around town for the next couple of hours. -

I love this restaurant. Probably my favorite Indian in the city.
Their food is tasty (although I can understand why some people say it's oily...but it's still delicious), the people working there are really nice, and they're CHEAP!! My boyfriend and I can get two dishes with naan and rice, plus drinks and samosas for like $25! -

I hear this place is great.
Unfortunately I have now tried TWO times to eat here with no success. I'm beginning to think it's some kind of conspiracy!
The first time my girlfriend and I showed up around 15 minutes after their posted opening time and were told the buffet wasn't ready. OK, I'm a reasonable guy, any place can have an off-day. The second time, just to be safe, I showed up around a HALF-HOUR after the opening time, but, once again, no buffet and chairs still up on top of the tables from the night before. As we were leaving we saw them turn another large party away, we figured between us and them they turned away about $100 worth of business just like that. As a small business owner myself I'm always amazed that so many business take such a cavalier attitude towards people who only want to give them their hard-earned money.
I should also mention that I wouldn't have minded waiting a few minutes for them to get their act together but on both occasions they gave absolutely no indication that they would be open for business any time soon, it was simply "Sorry, not ready yet."
Reading over some of the other reviews I see that at least one other Yelper has had the same problem with these guys.
In spite of everything (I guess I'm a glutton for punishment) I still may try this place sometime if they actually decide it's worth their while to bother to serve me. I certainly won't make any more special effort to eat here but if I'm in the area already and feeling hungry AND they actually have some FOOD available I'd love to check it out and re-visit my review.
As for now, I'll give them a second star because, again, I hear this place is really good!
Hopefully I will find out for myself someday... -

Here's the deal:
I find it hard to complain on a $10 groupon for $25 worth of food....and the food was good. My only (and biggest complaints) are that the server had dirty fingernails (EWWW, but better the server than the cook, but I couldn't see the cook from my table and choose to believe he was super duper clean), AND the service was spotty. The table that sat down 10 minutes after we did got their food WAY before ours....Oh and one more thing: no booze-age (neither served nor brought in)
But the food was good and cheap. -

I came here for dinner once, and had an enjoyable meal. Standard Indian restaurant experience, basically. We shared the chicken tikka masala and the lamb paneer. Both were good, not phenomenal, but worth going back.
So I came back for the lunch buffet and I had a %50 off coupon, so I was very excited. The lunch buffet was very minimal, but good. I had about 3 helpings of everything and felt completely stuffed. In terms of quantity of options, this isn't the buffet for you, but it was again, pretty standard.
But we go to pay and they say the 1/2 off coupon isn't accepted for the lunch buffet. We both read every part of the coupon and no where does it say the lunch buffet is excluded. I told him since it wasn't advertised, he couldn't expect us to have known it wasn't accepted and therefore we deserved the discount (since we would've gone to a slightly cheaper buffet elsewhere had we not been wanting to use the coupon). He explained that his mother had told him they can't accept that coupon on the buffet and refused to waver. So we paid full price for the buffet and left disgruntled customers.
I've made mistakes before where I've misread coupons and not seen the exclusions, but this coupon very clearly did not have a single exclusion listed except for the expiration date. Since the food is no more remarkable here than any other Indian restaurant in the city, I will likely never come back. -

For a similar price to Shalimar (across the street), you get a MUCH nicer dining experience. There's waiter service, and it has less of a "hole-in-the-wall" feel to it. The meat dishes here are less oily and still very tasty. I have noticed that the veggie dishes can be quite bland. What I absolutely love here is the chicken tandoori wrap! It's so good! Many of my evenings start with a call to Darbar on my way home.
Me: "Hello, I'd like to place a take-out order. One chicken tandoori wrap, please."
Darbar: "Ok, it'll be ready in 10 minutes".
Me: "SWEET!" -

Ive been eating at DarBar since I moved to San Francisco 4 years ago. It was always my go to indian restaurant. Ive spoken with the owners while I was there on many occasions and always enjoyed myself. However, this all changed about a year ago, when I started placing delivery orders instead of popping in for a sit down dinner.
Consistently when delivered the food arrives 1.5 hours after I order. Not only is it Ridiculously late its often stone cold, lacking in quality and substance. The first few times I just ignored it and kept on eating. Finally about 2 months ago after consistently receiving cold food I called to complain. The owner was helpful and offered to compensate me NEXT time for my horrible cold food that i got this time. What the hell, I gave him a chance (at his insistence), that next time was the ONLY time I have received food from DARBAR ontime, and warm (lukewarm at best).
last week was the last straw for me, i got my cold Chicken Tikka Masala and Cold Palak paneer 1.4 hours after placing my order via the online ordering service http://seamless.com. Then upon opening it, i literally had 3 pieces of cheese in my palak paneer, the rice pudding had a funky smell, and my naan was wet and soggy, not to mention cold and chewy. Upon calling the restaurant, i was told by the server that the owner/manager couldnt talk to me because he was eating... So i asked nicely again to speak with him, he came to the phone and started to scream at me on the phone that "MY RESTAURANT IS NOT THE PROBLEM, YOU ARE THE PROBLEM, I HAVE NO PROBLEMS, BUT WITH YOU!"
Yeah buddy, im the problem, its my fault my took 1.4 to arrive when i was quoted 25-35 minutes for delivery, and was stone cold.... Im just magic like that...
My advice, skip darbar, dont buy the groupon (that im now stuck with!) and go somewhere else. -

There's an excessive amount of Indian/Pakistani restaurants in SF. After a while, they all blend together -- kinda like a mango lassi.
Darbar stands out from the crowd.
Their food tastes fresher...there's a hint of lemon in the samosas. Their curries don't taste like they've been cooking for a week. Everything I've tried tastes much better than I've had at other restaurants. Pakwan on 16th comes a close second, but Darbar is much more elegant -- the food and the restaurant. I usually take it to go but their dining room doesn't feel like a "order at the counter and come pick up your food" place.
But, for me, that's really secondary to the food. If you're someone who swears by their competition across the street, do yourself a favor and try Darbar. -

They screwed me on my order. I ordered 3 Garlic Naans, but i only got 1!
Meal over all was okay. My search for amazing Indian food continues.
Chicken is all white breast meat, which is awesome. The spices and sauce is a meh, too little spice. The Naan was chewy and not very naan like.
I wanted to try this place for a while now, sad to say i wish i didnt. -

We ordered dinner from Darbar through http://Seamlessweb.com. Not only did it take 1 hour and 20 minutes for us to get our dinner but the chicken tikka masala was cold, the garlic naan was floppy and chewy, and the palak paneer was not only cold, but only had THREE small pieces of cheese...three.
This is the second time we have waited over an hour for dinner delivery only to receive cold, soggy, inedible food.
Very disappointing, I REALLY tried to like this place but it is just SO inconsistent. When you're hungry and in need of some Indian deliciousness, this place is too much of a gamble.
The search continues...... -

I came here because i had a vindaloo craveing. The food came out in less than 6 minutes, thats pretty awesome. Everything is pretty cheap compared to most other Indian places, but the portions definitely are smaller as well.
The rice was great, and the keema naan wasnt bad either. The chicken vindaloo was ok. Really nothing about this place blew me away. I think I will come back, but ONLY to try the buffet, -

Good cheap Indian food. Standard quality with lower prices.
Service got mixed up and gave us the wrong plates but they were very apologetic and threw in some free naan and rice. They were very nice and apologetic but then also took forever to bring us the bill.
Probably be a hit for take out.
