Neighborhood: North ParkOne of the few places I eat when visiting San Diego. I used to eat there all the time when I lived in SoCal, and strangely enough I've found nothing comparable in the Bay Area.
It's all about the spring rolls with herbs (very fresh and tasty) and the vermicelli noodle bowls. You can't beat the price: roughly $12-15 a pop INCLUDING beer--- very nice.
Downside: parking can be a pain in the behind, and waitstaff-to-patron ratios make for a bit of a wait sometimes.
I'll be down for Comic-Con soon, and unless an anvil falls on me at some point I will be dining at Dao Son.

I live exactly 1 block from Dao Son, and I'm stoked! It's perfect for a quick dinner when I'm just too damn lazy to make anything myself.
If you're a fan of spring rolls, you will LOVE their salad rolls. They are pretty much a meal in and of themselves and they taste extremely fresh. You get two HUGE rolls packed with cilantro, bamboo shoots, lettuce and your choice of tofu, chicken or shrimp. Seriously, they're as big as a baby's arm. Only knock is the fresh mint wrap can be a little chewy, so sharpen 'dem teef! The peanut sauce is great as well.
The noodles are always spot on as well. I'm a fan of the "Chow Fun" with tofu. You'll definitely have leftovers...unless your stomach resembles the Grand Canyon. Watch out for the heat though! I asked for a level 5 (ranges from 1-10) and I nearly incinerated my lips. In fact, they still sting a little bit. I was sweating like a pig just trying to finish my dinner! I'm gonna roll a deuce next time around...that fiver was just too intense.
The guy that works the counter with the Blue Tooth ear piece is a real yuckster. He cracks me up. If you're ordering out, be sure to rap with that dude for a while...you'll be entertained while your food is being prepped.

Been a fan for years.
Dao son cooks a hundred different varieties of my favorite food. Noodles! From the vermicelli, Eric's chow mein, chowfun, to yakisoba, they do it all and they do it all well.
Got take out last night, and they had run out of chow fun noodles, hot chef eric himself ran out to apologize and proposed a couple of alternatives, and within another minute he had cooked up another dish, which in my opinion may have been even better than the chowfun I'd ordered.
Oh! Be sure to get the crispy vegetarian spring rolls. Mind meltingly good. I've never tried the meaty ones because I'm afraid they just wouldn't be as good. It's like a hot crispy delicious piece of heaven melting in your mouth.

Consistently great food. I always order the salad rolls, and chicken vermicelli. Feels light, healthy and cheap. Not too many places can say that. The lighting is horrid, the TV distracting, gets crowded 6-8, but who cares. Don't bring a date here, they WILL look ugly in the lighting, maybe that's a good lesson for your shallow ass. Parking sucks too, but I don't care, when you crave it, you deal with it.

I want to give Dao Son a better review, because the waiter was so nice. It just didn't live up to the online reviews I've read. Will be giving it another chance soon but here is my first impression.
GOOD:
* Everything was very cheap! Maybe nothing over $8.
* Our waiter was very nice and liked to joke.
BAD:
* Low staff to customer ratio (at least the night I went there - 3 waiters, one of them doubling as cashier for about 50 customers)
* Parking is small and hard to find.
* Food = adequate. Nothing I couldn't get at a hundred other places, and the taste was "okay". I had the garlic chicken - it was VERY deep fried, barely garlicky (is that a word?) - just average, so-so. Ordered "5" on a Spiciness Scale of 10 - not spicy AT ALL. Came with white rice, also got Sapporo beer - total just $12.50 or so.
Now, this was my first time there - so maybe it was just a very busy night, and I ordered the wrong thing. Because of the low prices, my wife and I WILL be trying this restaurant again! But I am not yet able to extend the raves I had hoped.

If an assassin were holding a picture of me in one hand and a gun in the other, he would do well to camp out here. Ofcourse, the parking kinda sucks, but he's an assassin, what does he care?
I believe the Catfish entree to be somewhat of a religious experience and I would order it at twice what they charge. Amen.
Consistently delicious. Criminally affordable. This is comfort food for the new millennium.
This evening, I had the urge for rice. Dao Son was the first thing to come to mind.
We ordered two dishes for take out, Sliced BBQ Pork and Chicken in Rice Pot. Both are extremely flavorful and delicious. These are the two dishes that we get when we want some food that will tickle the ribs and leave us feeling so happy!
The portions are generous enough that both of us are comfortably full from dinner and that one of us will have lunch tomorrow.
All for about $18 with tip!
Parking can be difficult. But you will really miss out if you don't try this resto soon. This is truly one of the best deals in town.

Tasty Red Anything!!! and you're set.
And the Roast Pork
I bet they're out of the pork cutlet right now.
Prepare to be patient.
I have been going to Dao Son since they were on Park Avenue. The food is amazing and Eric " The Hot Chef" kicks ass. Their food is very flavorful and can be made mild to HOT. I suggest Garlic Chicken, Shrimp Lemon Grass, Salad Rolls and the extra crunchy tempura.
The prices are reasonable and you get a lot of food for your money.

This is a great place to go if you need an excuse to drink a lot of water. Excellent, creative fusion Asian food, in the style of Vietnamese, Chinese and Japanese. The people who work here are actually Asian.
Good prices, large portions and consistent quality. Much of the food here is very spicy, but the spicy dishes are marked on the menu, and you can choose how spicy you would like your dish.
Not to be missed:
The Hot and Sour soup with shrimp (don't expect a traditional hot and sour).
Shrimp Salad Rolls (fresh, tasty and healthy, and the sauce is unbelievably spectacular)
Garlic Fish (OH MY GOD)
I like that they offer the option to order brown rice instead of white rice for a small fee. The bathroom is reasonably clean and the service is quick, albeit sometimes with a bit of good natured attitude, sarcasm and cajoling. If you just want your food with no hassle, they do phone-in takeout. Do yourself a favor and check this place out.

Well, the price is right but I'd rather spend a few dollars more for some great Thai or Chinese in the area. I ordered the "chicken delight" and it was just OK. The Salad roles were good- fresh mint and bean sprouts with a peanut sauce. They were like spring roles the size of a burrito for only 4$. You can't beat that. I would come back for cheap eats but definitely not my favorite place.
I had a really yummy meal here recently. I am a sucker for Vietnamese eggrolls, so we started with an order of vegetarian ones. I thought I would miss the usual meat flavor, but I was pleasantly surprised. They were not lacking in any way.
For our entrees we ordered the garlic chicken and I think it was lemongrass chicken. I usually don't order that repetitively, but it wasn't my choice. After I tasted the dishes I was actually really excited that my friend picked what he did because both were insanely good.
The service was really good & fast, the food was super fresh & tasty, but I feel like I can't give it 5 stars until I go back and get down with some more authentic dishes.
Chili-Glazed Tofu with Eggplant...that's really all you need to know. Done.

I've been enjoying Hot Chef Eric's asian-fusion cuisine and the best of Mr. T's table-side manners for over 12 years now. I just don't know what I'd do without a regular salad roll fix! Their peanut sauce is THE best, rich and tangy...sometimes I get myself in a rut because I like certain dishes so much (like chicken in lemongrass spices, or rice vermicelli noodles, or soba yakisoba noodles, or curry soba soup, or fried catfish with eggplant...), but each time I try a new dish I find a new favorite. I love introducing newbies and witnessing them become just as hooked as I am!
Oh, and don't forget to try a young coconut drink!

A local favorite where you can go for the great food at a good price. The spring rolls are amazing (both vegetarian & pork), you wrap them up in a lettuce leaf, add fresh cilantro & mint, and dip in a sweet, yet spicy sauce. The garlic chicken is excellent, as are the Vietnamese noodle Vermicelli dishes. The 'hot chef' will spice things up to your liking (1-10), but if spice is not your forte stick to 5 or below. I love it hot, so I order 7, but a Kirin beer (or two) is a must have for me. This is not a place for a first date as the ambiance is a little lacking, but food & service are fantastic!

I'm with holding a star because every time i walk in place it smells like bleach! i guess on some level it comforting to know that the restaurant is clean but its just so unappetizing!

He's such a smart ass and we love him for it!
Do try the vegetarian spring rolls there so RAD!
Can't say enough good things about Dao Son. It's cheap, it's always delicious, and the service is always quick and friendly. Their Chow Fun is fantastic, the Lemongrass Chicken is another favorite, and you can't go wrong with the vermicelli.
Re: Colin P.'s comments, the waiter flirts with all the girls, not just Vietnamese ones. As for whether it's good on 1st, 2nd, 3rd dates - I can only speak from experience and say that I'm getting married to a woman that I took there on our 2nd date!

I would love to give this family-owned and operated business 5 stars, but they put every ounce of their energy into preparing inexpensive food that is amazingly tasty (at the expense of ambiance).
If you can get over the odd interior design, and the "all hands on deck" approach to service, what you will find is some of the best Vietnamese and Japanese cuisine in town. I recommend that your first experience be dine-in, so you can meet the family, but I typically phone in and pick up. Be warned, you are likely to find a couple of menu items that you will develop serious cravings for! Try the Shrimp w/Lemon Grass, the Garlic Chicken, or the Gyoza.

I really liked this place, if only really for one thing. The Vermicelli. It was so delicious. The noodles were served on a bed of fresh lettuce. Then the chicken was put on top and sprinkled with peanuts. So good. I topped it off with some of their sweet and sour sauce. Seriously though, that dish made this place worth it.
We also tried the spring rolls. Good too, but a little meaty for me. I think next time I'll try the vegetarian ones, but I loved that they weren't soggy. They were that perfect crunch. We also tried the udon curry soup. It wasn't bad, but the broth wasn't to my taste. I can't wait to go back and try their other soups though.
Prices were good, and so was the service. Though I must say that our server had a mind of his own, haha. A bit of a smart mouth, but it was amusing.
This place gets pretty packed on some nights so it certainly has a huge fan base.
The menu selection is mind boggling so I usually just ask the waiter what I have in mind and he does a good job of picking something out that is close. But honestly ordering doesn't stress cause to me everything here taste more or less the same.
I'm not trying to down, I just know it'll be good. Like Italian or Mexican food, it's not that big of a deal whether I get a small pizza or a calzone (pizza folded in half), or a taco or tostada (taco unfolded). I'm going to find it generally good and it's all going to end up in my hungry tummy.
The "Japanese" menu list is quite extensive as well. But I won't be recommending to any of my friends that like Japanese food.
Dao Son's Japanese dishes are.... UNRATEABLE.
That is, the flavors are SO OFF and Vietnamese influenced that their unapologetic stance is quite something to revere in this business.
I feel the attitude is, "You come into a place called 'DAO SON' and you're expecting Authentic Japanese???", and make you feel dumb.
So once in a full moon, I try their Chasu Ramen and side of Gyoza and smile with the open mindness of a food anthropologist.
With 40+ reviews, I feel silly to repeat again, "Tasty Vietnamese Food that is Cheap with Big Portions." but that does basically sum it up.

3.5 stars, to be more exact.
Tried the Chicken Rice Pot and the Fried Catfish.
The catfish dish came with sauteed eggplant, with a sweet/spicy sauce and crushed peanuts sprinkled on top, with a side of rice. Very tasty and the eggplant was cooked just right.
The Chicken Rice Pot was pretty good, with lots of ginger flavor and different veges (fresh mushroom!). However, it was too sweet for my taste, especially because the catfish dish was already sweet as well.
You can specify how hot you'd like your dishes to be. Very low key place with quick and friendly service (the guy's pretty funny).
Overall opinion: Food was very sweet! But that was probably/hopefully only because of these particular dishes I ordered. Would have been nice to have something not-so-sweet to balance it out. That's no fault of Dao Son...now I know!

I used to live a block from this place and I'd eat their mi xiao shrimp on average about three times a week for about three years. I haven't lived in San Diego for over five years now, but I just went back this weekend and stopped in at Dao Son before boozing in my old 'hood, and it's just as good and just as worthy of my devotion.
I live in SF now and the asian food here is obviously awesome. I'm no expert but it's great here in SF. But Dao Son does things that I have not been able to find in other vietnamese restaurants in any city. The salad rolls have more mint and more cilantro than most places, and the mi xiao shrimp....it is amazing. You gotta try it. Pan fried egg noodles with lots of vegetables and shrimp and this sauce that makes me want to cry.
It's a family run eatery, with the "hot chef" manning the kicthen, (dao son means hot chef..and he is also hot) and the hilarious server who is possibly hot chef's younger brother. Someone I always assumed to be their sister is also serving and bussing and maybe doing some kitchen work. If you go here more than once you will be recognized and treated very well.
The price is always right. It's always a good vibe in there. You can do take out or eat in.

It's really good. I've eaten the Garlic Chicken, the Red Chicken, the savory crepes, and now the fried tofu with eggplant and peanuts.
The spicy things seem to all have the same red pepper sauce with nuts on them. When you're asked how spicy you want something, what you're really being asked is how much red sauce you want. If you like thing spicy, ask for a 10. The sauce doesn't seem to envelop anything on your plate, so you can sort of apply it where you like.
The garlic chicken is breaded and fried, and it's pretty wonderful. It's not super greasy, but it's fried chicken, so it's not not greasy. The fried tofu's breaded fried parts fall immediately off of the tofu, so it's more like eating tofu next to some fried rice dough. But it's good. The eggplant completely absorbs the flavors around it, but it's kept firm and significant on its own. The red chicken's not fried. It's good, but why eat something not fried when there's something fried on the same menu?
Also, you can order the tofu and eggplant, and presumably all other forms of tofu, fried or just steamed.
They offer brown rice for an extra charge. This is wonderful. More San Diegans and yelpers should ask for brown rice at Asian restaurants, even if they know it's not on the menu, so as to persuade them that there's a market for the stuff.
Every time I'm in this place, there are tables full of young hipsters, dirty and grungy like their brethren, but they look a little smarter and more worldly than the hipsters loitering through the local North Park bars. They're older too.
Take out is quick. But make sure you transfer your food from the plain large styrofoam into some other dish. The styrofoam depresses the food. Dao Son deserves better.
There are two or three large table setup in the restaurant. It's good for groups of 8 or so. They also sell several kinds of beer in 22 ounce bottles. This is also good for groups.
It is a little divey. It's not a first date place. Or even a third date place. It's a place you take someone who you like, and who doesn't need to be impressed by how much money you're willing to spend for their company. But it's also the sort of place you could take someone when you want to demonstrate that you're comfortable with them, and that you think they'll appreciate a homey, interesting restaurant that you cherish from your neighborhood.
Note that if you bring an attractive Vietnamese girl with you, your waiter will hit on her.

The coveted 5-stars! (Okay ,4.5 but that rounds up to 5). This place almost has it all-- Great food, cheap prices, and a fun owner and atmosphere!
Normally a restaurant that features multiple different cuisines gives me pause. But Dao Son serves Vietnamese, Chinese, and Japanese dishes that are all of high quality and delicious.
I live 2 blocks away so I frequently get takeout, which never has taken more than 15 minutes. The owner (Eric I think) has a razor-sharp wit and he is not afraid to use it.
Large dining room is decorated simply (although another reviewer noted its tackiness, which I wholeheartedly agree with!) Service is fast and friendly.
Gotta try:
Chicken in Rice Pot
Salad rolls (fresh not fried)
Curry-flavored or straight-up udon (soup)
Chicken Sate
He started serving Pho maybe a year ago but I have yet to try it. I will update later if I get to it.
The only drawback I've come up with is that there is no parking. DO NOT park at the Arco next door, they will tow (so prophesy all the signs, so I gotta believe it).

it was hard for me to learn to like Vietnamese food but this place has provided a lovely gateway for me. I'm getting more experimental in my old age, and Dao Son has been wonderful to me.

This place is CHEAP. And you get a ton of food for the price. A 22oz Kirin for $5? Hooray!
I got the Tasty Red chicken which was alot like... semi -tasty red chicken. Nothing to write home about but it does the job if you're starving and on a budget.

I love this place. My boyfriend and I went because we'd read so many good reviews and were intrigued. We split the big Kirin, an order of salad rolls, the garlic chicken and the catfish with eggplant. Everything was amazing and I'm still thinking about that catfish...plus we went home with pounds of leftovers. We could have just gotten one entree between the two of us and been fine; even one of those chunky salad rolls would have done the trick for me.
The service was great, the waiter made us laugh, the decor is laid-back Asian homestyle and the food was spicy, saucy, fried and served with plenty of steamed rice. In other words, pretty much my ideal eatery: doesn't get better than this.

My wife and I love this place. We came here 2-3 times weekly at one point. The prices are unbeatable as are the Salad rolls in any protein variety. The Garlic chicken is awesome. T is funny as hell, but can sometimes not pay attention to your order. my main concern with this place is the fact that I get sick to my stomach many times I eat here. It could just be from the hotness I request my food at, but my wife has the same problem and she orders items way different than I do.
Worth the risk because it tastes great.
And it could just be me.

Oh, how I love thee, Dao Son.
I discovered this place when I was but a youth of 22, living in my first apartment solo on Arizona Street, a block down from the Denny's on ECB (side bar: not worthy of a review necessarily, but there's some great tranny and hooker watching after midnight there). One spring evening I took a stroll down the block and decided to give Dao Son a whirl... and I've been something of a regular ever since.
The food absolutely ROCKS and the prices are truly surprising... easy to escape with a bill under twenty bucks for dinner for TWO (unless you partake in one of their brews for five dollars). The service is ever-entertaining... the spunky little fella taking your order is named Thomas; he might give you attitude, but you're welcome to hassle him a bit in return.
I LOVE the spring rolls, which you wrap tenderly in mint, cilantro and lettuce before plunging them into the cool, tangy dipping sauce. The fresh salad rolls are a lighter alternative and equally delicious. The soups are interesting and not part of my usual order, which always consists of a bowl of the rice vermicelli, usually with shrimp. DELECTABLE. Other entrees that I've enjoyed are the garlic chicken, (err on the side of mild with this one... the translation of the restaurant name is Hot Chef for a reason), the red spicy chicken, the chicken in a pot... I guess I've stuck to poultry but I'm sure the rest is equally enjoyable.
I will acquiesce to some of the prior reviews, however... parking can be kind of a bitch. Try across the street by the Red Fox.
In any case, though, I love it here. Really, I do. If you go, tell Thomas that Amanda says "I miss you."

Another restaurant that afforded me a tab in my broke-ass youth. Thank you, Eric!
Luckily I can pay for all of my meals up front now, and I pay gladly at this fine family restaurant. Sure, it's pretty dingy and I've heard some real horror stories about living creatures showing up in peoples food - I'm totally down for this spot though. Eric's great and so is the rest of his family. I even love Mr. T - as much of an ass as he can be sometimes... speaking of which, I've been eating here for almost ten years now and so I have a pretty close relationship with everyone there. One time I was leaning over the counter to pay my bill and T came up and totally slapped my ass from behind! Haha! Man, that REALLY pissed my ex-boyfriend off! Funny shit. I told him off proper though and things are back to being cool between us.
My favorite things there are:
Salad Rolls: Tofu or Shrimp
Vegetarian Spring Rolls
Vietnamese Crepe with a side of rice (as a meal)
Chicken in Lemongrass Spices
Ginger Chicken
Chicken in Rice Pot
Tasty Red Tofu
And OYD (for a Chinese dude, he does a great version of Oyako Don)
Give this place a try for sure. It's cheap, filling and delicious. The fact that it's like scenester central can get a little annoying, but, whatever. It's worth it!
Four stars because, let's face it - this isn't authentic Viet cuisine... it is yummy though - and that's what counts!

Love the Tasty Red Chicken! It's best when they sear the chicken in the wok to give it a grilled flavor. I usually order at a Spicy Level of 5 and it definitely makes my eyes water and my nose run and I am a spicy fan. I couldn't imagine going much higher and surviing the after effects the next day.
I have also had the Black Bean Chicken, the Soba noodles, and the Chicken in Clay pot all of which were pretty good.
Minus a star because they can be inconsistent. I swear the chicken has been wok fried somedays and boiled others.
I usually take out and eat at home or work. There is a family ownership ambiance in the restaraunt as there is always some kid doing side work, but thats about it otherwise it's pretty drab.

I highly recommend the 5 spice game hen. It's just soaked in a lovely sauce that seeps out of every bite.

This place always does me a solid. Seldom do I deviate from the Tasty Red Chicken or the Garlic Chicken, but when I have, it's also been pretty tasty.
This is straight forward food and you can get it pretty spicy if you wish. You get a scale of 1 to 10. Sometimes the 7 is pretty outrageous, sometimes it's just right. I got the 10 before and found myself in the fetal position around my toilet a few hours later. Not in a bad way. Those cramps are a good sign that someone has lit me up with peppers. I'm addicted to hot peppers. I've learned to live with this.
While I've had food in other parts of the world that is good, I can't ride my bike to them. So, I suppose if I were some full time traveling food critic, I could compare this to places in Asia, but alas, I am not. I live in Normal Heights and this place always satisfies in the several years I've been going.
The prices are great and the service is fast. Sometimes I don't need a flaming pupu platter, ya know? Sometimes I just want to order some food, drop a Hamilton and go home. If I want the "Chinese experience", I'll go to Mandarin House. If I want a hot, spicy dish I go to Dao Son.
Dao Son Noodle House is in regular rotation. I dig the place.
