We are regulars at Dante's... the food is awesome and the staff is A-MAZ-ING.
The Philly is the best ever. I repeat... Best. Ever.
The 3-layer fries are out of this world. I find myself thinking about them sometimes as I am falling asleep. Weird, I know. They are that delicious.
My family has not found a menu item we wouldn't eat again. That's one of the reasons we go back.
Dante's also has Pepsi products... 5 stars for that! -

Nice place with a friendly owner and our visit seemed to echo all the other review's comments. But as what often happens when yelping for a new place to try out it just didn't seem to live up to the hype. I didn't find it that much better than than my local greasy spoon (e.g. Kojaks) and it I can't say it was better than the old standby (Tommys in C.L.).
The fries were good but I guess we were expecting something more based on all the 5 star reviews. I had a gyro and it was pretty good, although my fiancée said her burger was pretty darn good for a little shack on Rt 31. The onions were barely cooked but tomatoes seemed fresh and the meat on my gyro was quite good.
But later in the day both of use felt 'off' and were not sure if it was the grease with an extra side of grease, or something else. Haven't been back yet but we are not avoiding the place, it just didn't seem to make much of a first impression apparently.Comment from Harry C. of Dante's 12/30/2011

Found Dante's using Yelp while visiting a friend.We ordered 2 Willie Burgers and 2 orders of 3 Layer Fries. EVERYTHING was GREAT!!!!!!!! Harry(owner ) gave us the story of the Willie Burger and let us try a BACON X-PLOSION on the house and yes we finished the Willie Burgers,Fries and the BACON X-PLOSION.

Love this place. It's an old school hot dog stand. Sometimes, even in the summer, the inside air gets thick and smoky with all the frying going on. Good dogs and fries at a good price. I'll be back again and again.

I gotta tell you, if you haven't checked this place out, you NEED TO! From the very 1st time there, not only was I impressed with the menu and quality of food, but how PERSONABLE the owner is! You'd swear you've been friends for life, even after your 1st visit!
I was dying for my wife to try this place and were in the area one weekend, but had just had lunch......stopped by for just a couple of root beers and they were on the house!
Absolutely LOVE this place. Check it out.........GUARANTEE you will as well :-) -

After reading reviews on Yelp about the Philly Cheesesteak sandwich, I decided to find out for myself. Not at all disappointed! The sandwich is huge, and is out of this world. Just love their fries. Always enjoy the conversations with Harry, the owner. Will definitely go back for more Philly Cheesesteaks!

Since my initial visit, my family and I have been regularly frequenting Dante's. I think Harry took my comment about the cleanliness of the floor to heart, because the floors have been very clean on every subsequent visit we have made.
I can't quit the cheese steak sandwich! I did try the Polish recently. It was good, but nothing special. The cheese steak sandwich is my go-to order at Dante's, as that IS something special! I have tried bites of the Italian beef and I have to agree with previous reviewer JD, who said that it was good and had a rich, beefy flavor but no discernible garlic or Italian seasoning.
The fries truly are the best in the area and have always been hot, fresh and perfectly salted. During the past few months Dante's started serving cheese fries, chili cheese fries and "loaded" cheese fries (cheese, bacon & sour cream) with Merkt's cheddar cheese. Oh man..... super delicious!
We went there at lunchtime on a Saturday and there were probably four or five people in line. waiting to order. A couple came in, saw that line and walked out. "Their loss!", I joked with one of the other customers.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Best greasy fast food in the area! My parents were picking my fiance and I up from the Cary station and we said we were hungry. They had just finished eating at Dante's and insisted we try it. I had the hot dog with everything on it and cheddar cubes, my fiance had a chilli cheese dog and fries. Everything was amazing! The owner was super nice and the place seemed clean (for a fast food place). I had no complaints and will definitely be back again before I leave town!

I dont know what to say ...its an ok place...had the hot dog special..i think it was 3 bucks...dog was soggy...fries were excellent...pepsi is pepsi.
Realized i didnt have any cash on me , used my debit card. Owner bitched it cost him 30cents if i used the debit card.

Wow!!! Where to even start.. I have been here a handful of times, and the food is outstanding. Today I finally tried the Cheese-steak sandwich, and Im not sure what do to with myself. Probably the best Cheese-steak I have ever eaten, even after trying some in Philly.
Aside from the food, the staff there are very delightful. Always smiling, and willing to help, and go above and beyond to make sure your experience was a good one. The owner Harry is always there working, and is a nice touch to see an owner in his own business these days, as most never show their faces. He works all the time, is always happy, and very witty and funny too.

I dont normally write reviews but I have got to for Dante's. I swear to God, the phillys in this place are the BIZNESS. They are so good, I have at least 1 per week and would have more if I didnt know how fattening they must be. The cheese balls are great along side of it. The Demon Philly is a great alternative. I dont know what they do to those Philly's abut they are like crack. So good, so addictive, so worth it. Shouts out to Harry the manager, he is so friendly and nice and sometimes gives me $5 off my order just for being a loyal customer. Now that's how you do it!!

I randomly discovered this place on my Yelp app and am glad I did. It's a bit of a drive, but I've actually been back here twice in few weeks since discovering Dante's. First off, you can tell they use quality ingredients in their grub. Second: freakin awesome cheesesteaks! Thinly sliced marinated steak, with melted white cheese, mushrooms, and peppers. Everything just melts together and the huge cheesesteak will definitely fill you up. Really good hand-cut fries with skin on the side... excellent grub and a large order is enough for two people. I also tried a deep-fried crispy bacon wrapped polish, covered in cheese sauce and grilled onions. That was pretty good, but I probably won't ever order that again (agh my heart...). I'd like to try other things, but I always just want to get the cheesesteak. Probably in my top 2 favorite places for some awesome cheesesteaks.

Good Italian beefs, not perfect in my opinion, but very good. It had a rich "beefy" flavor, and that was terrific, but there was no pepper/spice that I could see or taste.
I had the combo and the sausage was flame-grilled to within an inch of its life ... so ... good, but not perfect. Grilled is good. Charred is good. But dry? Not so good. Still tasty though.
I like juicy beefs, struggling to hold the sandwich together is part of the experience, but I lost this struggle in a big way. I had bread soup in the bottom of my sandwich container. I'll know to mention my preference next time.
My brother-in-law does not like spicy food at all, so the beefy flavor of his Italian beef was good enough for him. He also got fries, liked them a lot, and the few he let me try were good. Others have said it's a large order, not TOO large for him, apparently.
The owner (I'm presuming) asked several times how things were, and another guy asked on his way out, so they seem to care. And, working in the food industry, they know to ask when your mouth is full so all you can do is nod your head and say, "ujmmgghhhs!" :D
It's not a particularly attractive building and lot, nor is it a dive, it's just your typical Beef joint. I would NEVER hesitate to eat here when in the mood for this type of food.Comment from Harry C. of Dante's 8/15/2011

I had gotten a 2 dog meal an it's pretty hard to screw up that order. Grilled onions where great, dogs where pretty good. Fries where a little soggy but still good. Owner was pretty easy to get along With.
One of the biggest issues I have with this place has nothing to do with the food. Getting out of the lot is very difficult if your trying to head south on 31. -

Agreed. Cheese steak is awesome. Fries, yummy. But I will say I'm a bit confused. I looked at the Yelp food pics and read reviews of things that I've yet to see on the menu. I asked one time about an item and they said they didn't have it. Actually, that's happened a few times. Makes me think there's a secret Dante's menu out there somewhere I'm not privy to? Secret password perhaps? Oh well, as long as I can always get the cheese steak I'm good. ;o)

1st an Update: So you go to a place enough you begin to recognize the folks and they recognize you. Well the guy who owns the place is named Harry and he is consistently hands on with his customers and the food itself. (Big points in my book.)
Since I have been going there religiously Harry introduced himself to me and we have gotten into a few conversations of all things wonderful - a.k.a. fresh quality ingredients, local small business support, perfection in doing the small things right, etc. I am even more impressed now than I was before. Go and you will see this ourself. I will let the service speak for itself - as to the food I cannot stop singing praises and need to tell you about these particualr gems:
The Gyros - I mentioned them last time but I have gone back and tried them again. The meat is overly geenrous (certanily not a complaint) - the vegetabels once again are fresh an unwilted from layign out cut. The tatziki is flavorful and very complimentary to the gyros meat as well as the warm pita.
The Philly Cheesesteak - I popped my cherry on this one. A regional sandwich which has the reputation of beign done a million different wrong ways and coming out with a terrible result I have always avoided wherever I went that advertised it. I asked fro harry's reccomendation and since I have kept updated on the Yelps I have seen others speak abotu the sandwich I thought I would give it the 1st shot. Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh man! I cannot get the flovr of this thing out of my mouth - the crisp green peppers, the delicious moist meat, the crisp onions, the cheese, and the sauce coming from each of the parts . . . oh man! I am in love - I can't stop thinking about this sandwich.
The 'Harry Explosion' - Imagine a bacon wrapped polish with a small amount of shredded cheddar cheese (none of that liquid stuff) freshly grilled onions, a locally made barbeque sauce (more points for supporting local small businesses), and jalapenos over the top onm a buttered french roll . . . did I mentioned that the polish is a foot long and and it is deep fried to delicious perfection! Oh man - this thing was amazing! Now this is not for the faint of heart - but for those willing to belly up to this beauty it does not have 'fatty' taste to it (not knocking wonderful fat). It is amazing - I was full after abotu half of this thing but could nto stop eating it for pete's sake and for the life of me I could find absolutley no way to improve it!

Sometimes I lay awake at night wanting desperately to transport myself to Philly, and sink my teeth into a cheesesteak from either Pats or Genos . . . It's a sad moment, because eventually reality beckons and I realize that there aint no cheesesteak in my future. Guess what, folks? Heaven is just a few miles away! This is the BEST cheesesteak - dare I say surpassing the flavors made famous in Philly. Ya aint gonna get a "whiz with" - they use an American white cheese that tastes great and melts perfectly. What completes this magnum opus is the flavorful chopped steak, grilled onions and mushrooms. Ya gotta try it, peeps.

This is a fantastic greasy spoon, kinda like high end fast food if you will.
they cook everything fresh, including grilling the onions on the spot. You wait a couple of minutes longer, however it's worth it.
i wish they had poutine on their menu, maybe i keep crying for it they will.
The people there are top notch.
This is simply a fanstastic place to eat and we are there once a week, at least. -

Wow!
I have driven by this place everyday since it opened but have been to afraid to stop.. We decided to try it today.
The menu is your typical Chicagoland beef/hotdog place menu.
The interior of the place.. plain and simple.. which is just fine with me.
The staff.. amazingly friendly! I was so shocked! I have never been to a "fast food" type place where the people were more friendly and thorough. I was amazed.
The food? I had the gyros and the wife had the beef.
The gyros had so much meat! Aint no one going hungry here! The beef was piled with meat too!!!! We also got our son the chicken strips and each of us got fries.. all around $20.
The service was amazing, the food was great! ( I liked the beef better than Portillos and Tommys ) and the gyros was better than any that I have had in the area.

I have driven past this place a few times on my way into Crystal Lake, and finally decided to stop in for a bite. I have to say that I was NOT disappointed. The owner, Harry, introduced himself and was super friendly. He gave me a bag of hand cut fries to try, because he was trying it out and wanted my opinion. The Chicago dog, polish sausage and brat were way better than Portillos and much cheaper! I have tried the cheeseburger, and it was delicious! Next time I am there, I am trying the cheesesteak and/or gyro. I recommend this place for the fast food craving!

Went back this on Sunday, yes Valentine's Day. And I now have a new love in my life; Dante's gyros!
As I previously stated, I would adjust my rating from 4 to 5 stars with more exposure to the menu. I am thoroughly convinced that they deserved the full 5 stars now.
Great food plus a wicked cool and friendly owner/operator.

I LOVE this place!!
I'm happy to see something is surviving in this spot right on route 31.
I have ordered the Gyros over and over and over...they have become my favorite in the area surpassing that of Kojak's! The owner is a real cool guy & will chat it up with you at the drive thru window as they are cooking the food. I have also eaten the chili cheese dogs and chicago style dogs & I think these are the best dogs I have had in McHenry County. All around, this is my favorite fast food joynt going!
Crap, now I am going to be craving a gyro from here...soooo goood!

BEST HAND-CUT FRIES in the area!!!!!! If you're like me, and sick of the same old frozen pre-seasoned french fries that all the places in the NW 'burbs use, you will go here just for the fries. OMG. Remember, hand-cut fries tend to be on the soft side, so you won't get the same crunch if you're a crinkle fry person. But super delish and so tasty - yum! I had the italian beef. Not a standout, but still good. My son had a cheeseburger and chocolate milk shake, which he liked. This place used to be a Scooby's, which were popular closer to the city. I have to say, I was concerned whether Dante's would make it because the parking lot is always empty, but I'm glad to see all the good reviews on here. I will definitely be back and this time I want to meet Harry and hear all about the fresh ingredients!

First off, Jen P., the only explanation for your experience is that you must have arrived before opening, after closing, during a power outage, or something else for which there is probably a good explanation. And Steven M., no need to falsely diss the food just because of your bathroom experience, which shouldn't have been all that complicated, it's an old building, deal with it. Finally, my son and I were sad to see the old Scooby's go, and we actually miss the old decor, but the wonderful quality of the food and the superior service have made it all better. You can't go wrong with anything on the menu, while the prices and friendly, personal service make Dante's a rare gem in contrast to all the big-name fast food junksters. The spirit of Chicago is very much alive here. Enjoy!

Dante's restaurant is located in a crummy looking plot of land which appears to have had a battle of the autobots vs decepticons occur right on their parking lot. But looks can be deceiving. To get an idea of how much i like their food, I've been to Dante's 4 times in about 2 months already and its about a 25 minute drive from my place. They have the best philly cheesesteak I've ever had. Unfortunately I've only had Dante's Philly cheesesteak but it was juicy, flavorful, and cheesy. I think there's a sauce on it that i can't identify but I'd eat it even if I found out it was poop. It's that good. I've had their pizza puff, fries, bacon wrapped polish, and cheesy squares (not sure if that's what it's called). All very solid. Only thing tastier than the food is their service.

Don't let the parking lot fool you, this place has seriously good food. My only regret is that i don't get here often enough. The brats and Italian beef are amazing, and where else in the area serves fresh hand cut fries? They are awesome! A great local place, not a chain, with friendly service and great food.

This place is fantastic! I drove by Dante's on many occasions and wrote it off as another Chicago hot dog joint. Finally, after reading some reviews on Yelp, I decided to go. So yes, the hot dogs, pizza pockets, and tamales are your standard fare, nothing special on these items as at most restaurants like this. What sets Dante's apart is their ridiculously tasty cheesesteaks. First, they're big, second, they're pretty dang accurate. Most people get them all wrong for many reasons, These sandwiches have the classic gooey cheese, falling apart meat, and awesome onions in a great cheesesteak sandwich. Also, their fries are incredible and are hand cut and double fried. Owner Harry cares a lot about his food as a quick conversation with him will reveal. In the best way, this place is all about the food. Highly recommended!

You know, there is never a car at this place and I do drive by quite often. Aftering seeing some quality reviews I thought I would try this place and was very disappointed! I can't comment on the food because I never even got the opportunity to order. We drove up to the window in the drive thru and waited 7 minutes and was never even acknowleged, Yes, it was open and there were workers in there who I know saw us(its a small place)I would find it hard to believe that they didn't! We left and will not return!

Just tried this place based off of the great reviews, and I am very happy I did. Both me and my girlfriend got the Philly steak sandwich and fries. We both thought they were delicious. We will be going back very soon to try other menu items. Oh, and the staff is also very friendly!

Wow! I'm totally coming back. Standard Chicago fast food fare -- they have simplified their menu since Dean S. wrote his review (no panko crusted chicken) but all their food seems really good. Tried the chicken sandwich, gyros, hot dogs, burgers -- all excellent. Fries were fresh cut and done perfectly. It's much fresher and cleaner inside than when it was Scooby's (which I liked too). I wish they had some tables outside -- and a gigantic fiberglass baby devil holding a hot dog on a pitchfork wouldn't be bad either!

best Philly Cheese steak in IL. Harry is one of the coolest restaurant owners in the world. Great service and great food. Especially because Dante's has things you can't get everywhere.

dante's is leaps and bounds above your typical fast food joint.
they serve awesome italian beefs, giant burgers, monstrous sub-sandwiches, grecian delight gyros, hand-cut fries, and of course, hot dogs. however, the quality of their food is what sets them apart from the pack. they have an outstanding menu and their customer service is top-notch. everyone is so friendly and welcoming. they truly appreciate their patrons and it shows.
oh, and did i mention they serve grecian delight gyros?
their salads are also excellent, if you feel like doing the healthy thing. my favorite is the greek salad with grilled chicken. this isn't a wimpy little side dish: every time i order it, i'm stuffed.
if you need a beef/burger/gyros fix in the nw burbs, definitely pay them a visit. your (full) tummy will thank you. -
