Neighborhood: AllandaleA trip to Spec's is an expensive, time-consuming ordeal, like Disneyland. In contrast, Twin Liquors on Burnet is always fun and friendly, like a novelty shop. The staff treat me like I've been going there for years (I haven't), which is charming and at the same time just a little creepy. They know how to make you proud of your wisely selected bottles:
"You know what, this is made with 1% Gewurztraminer so it's just a little bit buttery but also crisp."
"They make this with a wild cousin of the agave. It's hand-harvested on mountainous slopes of Chihuahua."
"This is bottled in glass containing Plutonium-238 to keep the magic, thermophilic pixies inside happy."
I'm only making one of those up.

Dan's recently became Twin Liquors, although I believe they have been owned by that local liquorium for some time now. No noticeable change in staff, service, or selection - all of which are excellent. A good spectrum of wines, not huge (see Grapevine or Spec's), pretty well weighted in to $10-$20 range which is where most of our bread is buttered.
The liquor selection is great and the staff really know what they have and *why they have it*. They carry a great selection of mixers, which most liquor stores neglect, and they carry a few "harder to find" items like Lillet and Noyeaux. Good prices, easy parking, in and out quick (you can't say that about the bigger places).

my recommendation for this place is due to the staff, not necessarily their products. they have a core group of 3 people (2 ladies and a gentleman) that are so friendly and cool. i have only been a handful of other places since i moved here and now i refuse to buy my liquor anywhere else! i'll also let you in on a little secret which is that they'll order special products for you if you're a good customer. we got them to carry some of the victory beers. go there and pick up a 6 pack of storm king!
