The new fenced in dog park is awesome. It's filled with gravel which was a little rough on the super hot days this past summer but it is definitely easier to clean and the place seems to be kept up well. The water fountain for the dogs, numerous dog bag dispensers, and 3 different play areas are great additions. Good mix of dogs on the weeknights I've taken my dog to play.

A few of the weekdays that I've walked my dog through Danehy I have noticed a few dog walkers that use that place for a dumping ground to let their dogs loose while they read a newspaper/talk on the phone. That isn't cool.

Aimlessly gliding through the side streets of Cambridge south of Davis Sq on my bicycle and...   wtf?

An enormous field-- vacant baseball parks, soccer fields and even a track for public use.  And it is also kept in fantastic condition.  So much green space that I forgot I was less than a mile from Porter Square.

There is even a SLEDDING SLOPE!  This is definitely the place to go for Cambridge/Somerville heads who want to dust of the ol' Sno-Tubes on that first thick winter snow.

This is hands down, one of my favorite parks. I take my dog there at least 2x a week and although she doesn't really like other dogs, it's a nice opportunity to socialize her. At around 7pm is when "dog hill" as we call it fills up with people getting off work who want to take their dogs out. I especially like how the park is laid out. It has 2 paths, one for bikes, and one for walkers. It also has an awesome track made of some rubbery low-impact turf.

This place is absolutely idyllic in the summer. Great place for kids too -- there's a water spray thing that runs when it's hot, and a couple of kiddie playgrounds, one at each main entrance.

I really like Danehy Park, too. The facilities are great. But I just wanted to note that people should take care around the area down the hill from the soccer fields, by the train tracks. Over the past year, people have been jumped/mugged by a group (or groups) of teens who then book it through the fence and back across the tracks. CPD knows about it, but I don't know if they've done anything to address it.

So if you don't want to get mugged, just be careful around there.

Danehy Park used to be a an old dump site.  According to some local peeps, the Red Line used to stop at Harvard Square and the MBTA struck a deal with the City of Cambridge to use that dump to store machinery and whatnot to extend the Red Line out to Alewife.  All the excavated dirt ended up filling the dump and there is now a good sized hill making up most of the park.

There's a full sized track and field with astroturf.  There are also 2 grass soccer fields equipped with netted goals, and 3 full softball fields up on the hill.  There are even more fields down on street level between Sherman St. and Garden St.

I regularly play softball here, it costs some money though, $75 for 2 hour reservation.  Not too bad if you have 2 full teams.  The cost is worth it because they use the money to maintain it, the grass is regularly cut and they rake the dirt everyday.  There are permanent home plates, but you have to BYOB (bring your own bases).  lol

Edit:  Softball field rates have gone up this year (2008), to $90 per 2 hour reservation.

i always enjoy a nice stroll through danehy, especially now that the most adorable niece ever has arrived on this earth.

tucked behind what might be the ugliest stripmall on creation, fresh pond mall, danehy is a park w/little rolling hills and walking/bike paths.  i used to walk my dog here (r.i.p budderick) and he loved every sight and smell.  makes my heart smile just thinking about it.
