If this place is closed, I will cry.
Damon & Pythias, you left us too soon, it seems. I won't believe the rumors until I see for my own eyes. Until then, I will long for your California Steak Sandwich. -

oh man do I love this place. I used to come here ALL the time when I was attending UCLA. This was my favorite hang out place with my girlfriends to have a light lunch and chat with.
My favorite dish is garlic curly fries with freshly chopped garlic (not garlic powder or garlic salt) and ranch dressing. Their food is so yummy! -

There was a point in my college career when I came here twice a week for like, two months. I had just discovered this gem and was sharing it (and more steak salads and sandwiches) with all my friends.
Now, I go a little less often (mostly because I'm too lazy to walk) but still have that overwhelming happiness when I put the first bite of food in my mouth.
1. Best sweet potato fries in the vicinity. Cinnamon sugar, basically, and they give you a good amount.
2. Steak salad. I knew the salads must be good when I saw a couple of dudes sitting nearby chomping on the stuff. The salads are BIG with a bunch of awesome toppings so when I want something healthier but delicious, that's what I get. (The croutons, though, sucked. Come on D&P, better croutons please!)
3. Minotaur sandwich. The marinated steak... yum! I swap out the onions for pepperoncinis and would recommend doing that (or adding them!) because it's better that way.
Student discount! Don't forget to tell them because they won't automatically add it in. -

I have been coming to Damon and Pythias since it first opened when I was an undergrad at UCLA. I was a huge fan in the beginning. The menu was amazing, the prices were reasonable, service was super fast and it was never crowded. Unfortunately it has lost a little of its amazing-ness over the years. The service is still pretty good, but the prices have gone up a lot. And they can't seem to stop changing the store and the menu.
I miss the old "build-your-own" sandwich, but there are still some good menu items. The curly fries come with an amazing garlic ranch sauce. I have never come for happy hour, but it looks like it might be a good deal.
Overall, still a good place and I will keep coming back, but I miss the old days. -

I sentence Damon & Pythias to Yelp jail. Let me state my case.
I went to lunch this week with the hubs and we ordered the simplest foods in America: a tuna salad & sandwich and a hamburger. My honey's hamburger had iceberg lettuce which wasn't a deal breaker but, based on preference, I think it's as tacky as wearing plaids and stripes. Lettuce snobs, stand up!
Their serious offense: putting fennel seeds in my tuna sandwich. Why would anyone do this???? Is this common? How long has this been going on? Give me green apple, cranberries, relish, anything but FENNEL SEEDS. I hate fennel seeds (in Grumpy Smurf voice)!
Please remand Damon & Pythias to the custody of Yelp jail. What? I'm a Law & Order fan :) -

Yummm. Quality sandwiches, salads and garlic fries in Westwood - perfect spot for lunch! They have half salad and sandwich deals or half sandwich + side combos... lots of variety to choose from - I've never really gone wrong with anything from the menu.
Their steak sandwiches and salads are pretty decent. The only complaint I have is that last time we ordered our steak to be cooked medium rare and it definitely was more well done... at this rate maybe next time I need to order it rare?!?! They also serve a Kobe burger which I wonder about...?
The garlic fries seem to have gone downhill a bit... I remember them to be more garlic-y. Therefore in my humble opinion, it wouldn't hurt for them to pour more delicious garlic on top of those curly fries to proudly call them GARLIC fries.
Don't forget to ask for a rewards card! (Although they haven't had them the last couple times I went, but they will stamp your receipt... but still, I want my card damnit!)
All in all, solid place for lunch if you're in Westwood but could definitely use some improvement! -

The garlic fries here are delicious!! They're seasoned with the perfect amount of fresh garlic!
The BBQ salmon and the steak sandwiches are my favorite sandwiches here! The salmon is nice and juicy! The portions are generous! You can easily split one sandwich+ garlic fries between two people (from a girl's perspective)!
The service is usually pretty fast-- you order at the counter and they'll bring your food out to your table within 5-10 minutes. There's both indoor and outdoor seating. There's also a public parking lot directly across the street from here (on Broxton) that is free for 2 hours if you enter before 6 PM, so take advantage! -

I've been going to this place since my undergrad days, and still find it worth a trip back to Westwood. Fresh American fare (not really Greek like the name would imply), order-at-the-counter, and with a great people-watching patio.
Years ago, when I fist visited, I was instructed to get the garlic fries and chicken Caesar sandwich. This is still a solid choice, although in recent years, they've undergone many changes... the garlic fries are a smaller portion, and less garlicky and won't make your car smell for days if you do take-out, they even tried a froyo counter, implemented a happy hour, etc.
My dining-partner-in-crime usually gets the LA Cheesesteak, and I'd highly recommend the steak and strawberry salad. Weird combo, I thought too, but the juicy steak strips, strawberries, fresh goat cheese, candied nuts, and crispy fried onions are to die for. The meal usually lasts me 2 days, as do the sandwiches.
They serve beer and wine too, and I'm excited to go back and try the happy hour with Kobe burgers, beers and fries. Free parking for an hour in the Broxton structure!Listed in: places I miss :(

I have been in Westhood long enough to see the managment at D&P change multiple times. I have to say, whatever they're doing now, they're doing it right.
Gone is the medicore yogurt counter and hello beer on tap and one of the best burgers in Westwood. If you have had reservations in the past, I'd recommend giving it another shot.

Every sandwich I have ordered here has been absolutely delicious! I'm a big fan of sammies and it's nice to find a eatery close by that can make decent ones.
The service is quick, but being in Westwood Village, it can be hard to find parking at times, so I would suggest just parking at the garage across the street for a few bucks! Or else, it's free for 2 hours before 6 PM! -

I've been here a few times, but not in the last year. I have good memories here and remember that they have fantastic garlic fries! I ordered a sandwich both times I went and I really liked it.
With so many restaurants and shops closing in Westwood, it's a telling sign that Damon & Pythias is still open.
It's not the fanciest of places, but it's definitely good for grabbing some grub with friends.
Just make sure you take breath mints, as your breath will exude garlic for hours and maybe up to a day! -

I ordered the Turkey Club sandwich today and mMmmmmMMM!!!!
For $10, I got the most amazing sandwich that included
a generous portion of oven roasted turkey,
seasoned herbs and spices that added the perfect taste which distinguished this sandwich from all other sandwiches,
apple-wood smoked bacon for that slightly crispy texture,
spinach,
avocado,
and the MVP: cranberry cream cheese spread. The spread was thick yet sweet and oh so crucial for this sandwich.
Then to top it off, the sourdough bread was perfectly toasted where the middle of the bread wasn't soggy, and yet the crispy crust didn't hurt the roof of your mouth.
This place never fails to impress me with their food.
Give it a try if you're hangin out in Westwood! -

I came here because I was hungry and passed by it walking around Westwood. It's really casual and the food is just okay. I got the buffalo chicken sandwich. It wasn't my favorite, but it wasn't bad either.
Don't know how to describe this place other than pretty normal. There definitely isn't anything special. I won't come back because I will want to try something new, and there isn't much reason for me to come back. -

YUM YUM YUM!!! This place is a Westwood gem!
You MUST order: the LA Philly Cheesesteak Sandwich or the Strawberry Steak Salad.
If you bring a Bruincard, you get 10% off after 2pm (or something like that).
They have a limited yet satisfying beer and wine selection.
The service is pretty quick and the guy usually working at the front (he has long hair I think) is totally cool.
The outdoor seating is awesome for people-watching on warm weather days but occasionally the legendary Westwood homeless may wander in. They'll probably ask for money but they're harmless. Usually there's a guy playing guitar on the bench outside.
One weird thing: There is often a banner sign hanging outside celebrating new management or the return of the old manager or some other change that I don't think anyone really cares about. Oh, well. Food is consistently awesome. -

Damon & Pythias is one of those places that I'd walked by every day for as long as I can remember and always meant to stop in but never did... I'm not sure if it's because it was off the beaten path or if it's because they always looked busy when I walked by and I didn't have time to wait... but finally, about two weeks ago, a friend of mine suggested it and we went.
I'm glad we did.
The food was tasty. The service was fast. The staff was accommodating. It's now a must when we're dining in Westwood.
Be sure to stop by for happy hour for premium beer at rock-bottom prices. -

Like many other people I know, I was rather confused and disappointed to learn that D & P wasn't a Greek place. But then I had my first burger from there.
I'm not a carnivore by any means, but the guac burger (and the country burger) is delicious. Just make sure you order it to a lesser doneness than you'd actually like it. Like others have mentioned, they tend to overcook 'em. The fries are good. The ranch that comes with them is overly herby in my opinion but still good too.
Watch out for hoards of haughty frat boys while you're there too, though..maybe its the cheap beer that attracts them? -
Review from Jaimie L.
Perhaps I'm a bit biased because I live near the place and I've been here quite a number of times. Even before it's rennovation I was a fan - I can't get enough of their sweet potato fries and their garlic curly fries! Of the things I've tried, none have disappointed, such as the Minotaur Steak Sandwich, the Turkey Club, and the Portabella Caprese. I am also in love with their Wild Strawberry Salad, which has strips of steak, fresh strawberries, and candied nuts!
They've recently incorporated a happy hour menu from 3-6, which I think is a great deal because it can get a little expensive if you want a full-sized meal.
The workers are always friendly and they bring the food to your table as well.
I believe the food is high in quality and extremely delicious! Don't hesitate to try! -
Review from Evelyn S.
Shared their lunch meal (any salad + any sandwich) with zee best friend, and it was $11.95. Price is okay, and portions were normal. I got the Cobb, and it came with a LOT of chicken. BFF got the Steak Sandwich, which she liked.
We also split the garlic fries, and I thought they were just so-so.
Seems like just another Panera/Corner Bakery/Jerry's place to me, so wouldn't necessarily come back again.
But I heard there's a student special/happy hour deal at 2 PM, so if that's true, probably can come for a cheaper deal! -

3 1/2 stars
My boyfriend (a UCLA alum) took me here before a basketball game. He really liked this place when he was in school and I could see why - the food is fresh, comes out quickly, and all in all the menu is pretty decent. One main drawback is that I found it to be kinda expensive for what you get (just under $9 for a half salad and $4 for a side of fries). I don't know, maybe Westwood is more expensive in general, but I usually expect restaurants that cater to college students to be a bit more reasonably priced.
No fault to the restaurant, but due to my gluten allergy, the only thing on the menu I could order was one of the make your own salads, which I'm perfectly fine with. Problem is, I'm never really that impressed with salads - and though my boyfriend's sandwich and fries looked delicious (as did most of their other menu options) - I can only base the review on what I had. That being said, if I were in the mood for a salad, I would definitely recommend this place. The topping and dressing options are fresh, plentiful, and healthy. -

Santa Clara, CA
God Damn. Excuse my swearing but when they say food for the gods they're not kidding. After hearing about this place from a friend, I stopped in and ordered the burger of the gods, a Kobe Beef Burger and the side of the gods, a plate of garlic fries.
A mere 5 minutes later, both plates were out on the table in front of me. Now, I would be lying if I said I wasn't already excited. But then I took my first bite of the garlic fries.
And I was blown away. Perfectly seasoned, crispy fries topped with generous portions of savory garlic and a delicious dipping sauce that I'll admit I cleared out with some finger-licking action at the end (Shhhh!) were what greeted my taste buds on the beginning of my eating adventure.
At this point I turned to my Kobe Burger, a giant slab of a succulent beef patty sandwiched between the usual burger condiments and sweet buns. I took my first bite and I died and went to heaven.
I'll say it. This is probably hands-down the best burger I have ever eaten in my life. And believe me, I've eaten a ridiculous number of burgers in my life. Juicy, tender, and humongous, the Kobe beef patty was cooked to perfection. The onions were amazingly sweet (not tear-inducingly spicy like some onions in burgers) and crunchy. The tomato and lettuce added a subtle, perfect moistness to the overall burger without taking the focus off of the star of the show in the middle. Make sure you get the burger with the sweet buns as well...it's an interesting element that I haven't experienced at other burger places and provides a perfect complement.
I will definitely be back here. Hopefully very soon. From what I saw, they also have a big variety of salads, sandwiches, and entrees that looked equally enticing. However, it may be very hard for me to try the rest of the menu because I will be so tempted to order the Kobe Burger again. -

This seems to be one of those places that every time I pass by it, I intent to try it but never do. I'm glad I finally gave it a shot. The grilled veggie sandwich is one of the best I've had recently. It's filled with a variety of grilled veggies (eggplant, portabella, red pepper, and more) on thick focaccia bread with a subtle but effective garlic aoli. The garlic fries are OK, although I expected them to be a bit more garlicky. The portions are hearty and large and well-priced. The food is solidly good and perfect for those times when you don't want fast food, but you don't want a more formal sit down restaurant (you order at the counter and they bring you your food but you're responsible for grabbing your own drink, etc.).
Service was friendly and the dining area looked really clean. I will definitely be back to try their other menu items. -

Los Angeles, CA
The boyfriend ordered the Country Burger and I got the Guac Burger. Both were rather tasty. Sizable portion, so you feel like you're getting your moneys worth. While this place is worth trying, it's not a joint I'd ever become a regular at.
I was also underwhelmed by the garlic fries. Everyone seems to love it on Yelp, but it was just chopped garlic chunks thrown on top - something I could've done myself.
And ... there's really no "vibe" to discuss here. I've passed by it many times and it always seems empty. -
Review from Jenny S.
IF i had reviewed this earlier I MIGHT have given it a better rating, but it's stepped down since my last visit!!
the first time I came, I got their turkey sandwich w/ cream cheese & cranberry sauce, it was pretty good!
but this last visit.. i decided to go for their "famous" LA CHEESE STEAK.. and it was horrible!! I asked for it to be cooked medium and it was WAY OVER DONE and the meat quality was MEH!
we also got a side of their MUCH raved about garlic fries but I really don't understand what the hype is all about! the garlic flavor was not very noticeable.. even though i could see the minced garlic pieces sprinkled on top
the only thing that seemed to be made right were the onion rings.. came w/ bbq sauce and ranch to dip
10% student discount, but i dont think i'll be back!! I WOULD NOT PAY 10 bucks for that sammy!!
LUNCH NOTE: they've got a lunch deal for about 10 bucks. you get half a sandwich, a side, and a drink
PARKING: if you come before 6 pm, the parking garage is free for the first 2 hours! -
Review from Rachel Q.
I love their steak! This was and is still one of my favorite places to go for a salad. When I was a student at UCLA, I would always frequent this place. Now, when I meet up with my UCLA friends, we get dinner here and then head to Diddy Riese for dessert. Damon & Diddy. How can you go wrong?
I always get the create your own salad - with mixed greens, broccoli, cucumber, the crunchy seed mix, tomatoes and parmesan cheese, with medium steak flank and balsamic vinaigrette. It is a perfect plate of deliciousness, especially with the juicy and tasty steak.
This place has added a lot since I was a student - nicer seats, big TV's and overall newer feel. They also added burgers, hot dogs and an array of desserts. -
Review from Jamie C.
LOVE Damon and Pythias. I've never had a bad experience there. My faaavorite thing to order is the strawberry steak salad. It's SO AMAZING. It's got sweetness and meat and a bit of crunch from walnuts. You'd think strawberries and steak wouldn't work, but it does - there's even whipped cream. I'm getting hungry thinking about it now.
I've also had some of their sandwiches, which are also quaint and yummy. My roommate loves their garlic fries and we always get them even though we small all garlic-y afterwards. They also used to give a discount for UCLA students. Dunno if they still do, but it just gave me more of a reason to go! -

North Hills, CA
Came here for lunch the other day because I was in the area and have wanted to try this place for awhile.
Very clean with a varied menu without being too overwhelming. I went with the Chicken Cesar Salad sandwich and the garlic fries.
The portions were very generous and the bread used for the sandwich was really soft and yummy. The garlic fries were just OK. I think they could have used more garlic flavor. Perhaps I didn't get a batch that was tossed well? I actually wish that I had ordered a half-sandwhich as I was unable to finish all of my food.
The service was friendly and the atmosphere was very chill.
I will definitely return the next time that I'm in the area.
P.S. They deserve props for having Coke Zero and not just Diet Coke -

This place makes a mean burger. I dropped by with my roommate and got the angus burger meal. Ten bucks for a quality burger, garlic fries (which were excellent), and a drink. Quite amazing, almost 5 star amazing EXCEPT for the fact that my bottom bun was soggy from the burger juices, total mood killer. You were so close Damon & Pythias your burger is comparable and possibly better than golden state, fathers office, and umami if it just wasn't for your soggy bun . I'll come back, hopefully it was just a one time thing.

Review from Gabi M.
During a recent visit to LA, I found myself walking around Westwood Village looking for a place to eat lunch and do a little work...
Damon & Pythias caught my eye because of their casual atmosphere and a sign that said "food for the Gods." If it is good enough for the Gods, it must be good enough for me! In addition, they had a big sign out front that quoted yelp reviews - I was sold!
I like the fast casual concept where you order at the counter and they bring your food to your table. I went with a California Cobb Salad (with turkey) and a side of sweet potato fries.
I found myself a booth to sit in and set up shop with my computer... they seemed perfectly fine with that. My food came out pretty quickly and it was fresh and tasty.
All in all, an "A-OK" experience... but I will point out that there were several typos in the signs out front. What can I say? I'm a stickler for typos! Hope I don't have any in this review :) -

For those of us who remember this place when it opened, it was time for it to go. The food was no longer as good as it once was and it seemed they were suffering an identity crisis. Anyone else remember when they added a frozen yogurt bar? I remember going to D&P back in 2000 and it was great. But I think somewhere along the way it changed ownership because everything began to go south. Sad to see it go, but it was time.

Love the food but they cut down on the portions tremendously. Their Calabasas location closed down because they didn't get enough business so I think they are acting real cheap at their Westwood location to make up for their loss. Their sandwiches are about 30% smaller, 50% less meat then they were in the past.
Also I don't know what they did to the onion rings but they are not as good as they used to be.
Bye bye Damon -

An average campus stop for snacking or happy hour specials..or supposedly, as other yelpers write, large portions.
I tried two small plates: the stuffing (I was like dang, thxgiving stuffing no way must try!) and the onion rings for a total of ~$5.
Stuffing = TERRIBLE.
Onion rings=average.
Price=normal.
Ambiance=meh.
I will return though to try their sandwiches and utilize their student/staff discount and maybe try their curly fries. But I'm skeptical... -

The La CheeseSteak was something I was looking forward too. I was thinking it was a cheese steak sandwich, but it wasn't close. I'm sorry UCLA that you have been suckered into believing this place is good. In all honesty this place sucks as does the turkey veg soup. The soup was bland and the turkey was dry. Oh by the way those garlic fries are so not garlic tasting. We got scrapes as in fries, pieces here and there.
I guess I'm for fresh and tasty but this place just sucked period. I forgot my school id at home because I could have used the 10% off so I don't have to pay that much more for my crappy lunch. -
Review from Jim M.
Wow! This place has been on my Yelp fantasy list for some time and I finally pulled the trigger this morning for lunch. The place is clean, the service is good, the location is quaint, the menu is delicious and the food... was awesome!
I had the turkey club with a side of garlic fries; she had the wild strawberry salad with a half tuna sandwich. Had we known the items would be so grande, we probably would have tamed our order back a little bit, but what the hell... it's a sunny Saturday.
I uploaded pic's of our lunch, so you can enjoy too. The turkey club wasn't little slices of turkey... it was more like I went to my grandma's house the day after Thanksgiving and she made me a turkey sandwich. Effen huge. I can eat a lot and this thing presented a slight challenge for me. The garlic fries were great, but I'm not sure I agree with all of the reviews by people who experienced an orgasm from them... they were ordinary curly fries with garlic and oil. But still very good.
I look forward to going back and trying more of their menu! On nice days, they even have a big patio to sit outside and peruse the UCLA girls, I mean the nature, while you enjoy your lunch. -

I've heard a lot about this place from my UCLA friends and but I guess my Trojan taste buds just didn't get it. Hmm.... I feel like I set myself up for a lot of jokes haha. Perhaps really I set my expectations to high from the hype or maybe I caught them on a really bad day. I know that they have gone through a couple different management changes over the past couple of years, so perhaps that may have affected my experience.
I went there with my boyfriend (one of the bruins who praised them) one afternoon and the place was dead. Granted I believe went at a funny Linner time because their "special" were all available to us. The funny thing about their specials on the poster outside was the same of as the prices on their normal menu. After looking over their menu for a couple of minutes we decided to split two sandwiches.
BBQ salmon - The salmon was kind of dry and lacked flavor. I ended up trying to spice it up with some A1 sauce. I know that sounds really really odd but it was the only thing I could find and it really needed something extra.
LA Cheeseststeak - I liked this sandwich a lot more than the other. It was a little tougher than I would have liked, but this one was much better on the flavoring than the salmon one. I did like the bread it was on I'm not totally sure what kind it was but it was a good fit for the sandwich.
At 11 bucks per sandwich, I think next time I'll explore more of Westwood for a place to eat. It was just underwhelming for me. Sorry Damon & Pythias.
*tip* if you get there before 6 you can get two hours of free parking in the Broxton Structure across the street -
Review from Sally Z.
I really liked their garlic fries when I last ate here! They have that garlicky taste that restaurants advertise, but I never see. So when I popped these bad boys in my mouth, I was pretty satisfied. The dip was good with it too. Ranch?
I got the fries with my LA Cheesesteak sandwich, which was pretty yummy. I don't know why I never came back, but I always hear mixed reviews about D&Ps. It's kind of a fast food set up restaurant. The food's moderately priced at about $10 for a meal (though in my mind, it's just a sandwich). -
Review from Amanda N.
More like 3.5 stars. I love the garlic curly fries - get them! I've ordered a few of the different sandwiches and the burger - it all tastes good, like your typical $10 bistro-style sandwiches. Sometimes I feel the steak is a little bit tough, but put together with the fries, the meal is tasty.
Service is fine, and dining outside is nice on a sunny day. I'd recommend if you're in the Westwood area. Plus, there is free 2-hour parking in the lot across the street.Listed in: For UCLA students with no car…
