I still read the DMN because there really isn't anything else to read in terms of Metroplex news. (Seriously, what else is there besides the Star Telegram?) But the Observer is hip for many reasons. First, they're kind of like that rebel kid in the classroom - questioning the teacher whether their own opinion may be right/wrong. Whether accurate or not, I feel an alternative voice is always needed. Also it's a great source for events. I don't think there's another list of Dallas culture that's quite as comprehensive and up-to-date as the Observer's. This is a smart, city-sensitive publication.

This is sort of 5 by default - not that they don't deserve it - but this is a city with one major newspaper. Because the Dallas Morning News is the only dog in town and owned by Belo Corp, you tend to get very watered down news. It's like getting all of your news filtered through your parents.
That's where the Observer comes in. They run a lot of articles about things you'd like to know about your city but would never find in the DaMN. They also expose a lot of corruption and BS at City Hall that the DaMN is sometimes scared to touch. Plus, it's about the only print piece that you can keep up on local music and movies in the area.
If nothing else, a bonus star for the adult and porn ads in the back.
Oh yeah, and make sure to read their daily blog (Unfair Park - google it) for all of the crap that goes on daily that you probably might not hear about elsewhere.

My Republican father once told me he was "disappointed" in me when he first saw me holding a copy of the Observer at age 16. Been reading it ever since.
It's not particularly well-written, and I don't agree with a lot of positions they take. But I appreciate the fact they offer an alternative perspective that's not always readily available to the Dallas market.

I've been reading this publication since before they outsourced their personals to the online world. Schutze is a favorite and I liked it when Sarah Hepola was the music editor. They chronicled the rise and fall of Deep Ellum rather well. There was a great piece about what happened when Nirvana came to town.
