I never ate at the Dallas BBQ, but I did drink...and drink...and drink.
My friend was a bartender and on his quiet nights my friend and I would travel into the city and hang out with him to pass the time. In return he would fill us up on "Texas Size" frozen margaritas and pina coladas. They were amazing and were a great treat before going out for a night in the city. The food always looked and smelled amazing...but unfortunately our purpose was to get some drinks. Maybe I will go back one day and actually have some actual BBQ at the Dallas BBQ.
In college, I'd go to BBQs every Friday night with my roommates to get jumbo Texas sized margaritas and a hearty meal. My favorite was always the peach margarita with an extra shot (every texas size comes with one shot in a little testtube that is placed in the slushy marg - an extra shot means two testtubes).
I love the chicken soup and cornbread. That is one of my favorite - and cheap - lunchtime meals on a cold winter's day in the city. I also recommend the quarter chicken with all white meat and honey basting. Comes with delicious fries and cornbread.
Every time I come back to the city I go to BBQs. It is a must. I remember using my fake I.D. in front of my parents for the first time at this BBQs... we all shared a good laugh and a jumbo marg. Cheers to BBQs.
Now I have issues with the fact that they won't deliver up to 88th street but that is a rant for another day. I love anyplace that will give me equal opportunity burger toppings for my turkey burger and this is the place. I love their Dallas BBQ Bacon Turkey Burger complete with fried onions and melted cheese. I will perhaps nibble on my boyfriend's rib and chicken combo but I stay true to my DBBTB.
The drinks here are pretty strong and being the lightweight that I am I said 'hey what the hell throw in an extra shot of vodka' (I don't do tequila due to the 21st birthday tequila incident of 2005. It's a great place to get down and dirty and its always full of people picking up or sitting down. Oh don't go here for lunch unless you plan on doing nothing all day cause you can get a serious case of the 'itis

I am surprised this place has decent reviews, had lunch there today and, well, YUCK. There is much better BBQ in the City and we felt totally ripped off. I would have given it 1 star, but I felt it deserved 2 because our substantial leftovers fed a homeless person. The sauce is pretty good, which is great because they use a lot of it to cover up the tasteless (old?) meat. Best part of the meal was the french fries and large drinks. Don't bother with this place, life is too short for bad BBQ in a city full of good to great BBQ. However, I guess if you drank enough liquor, you might appreciate the large portions.
A place where you get a lot for your money. For dinner they have the "early bird special" for about $4.50 (last time I visited). You a chicken soup and and half chicken with rice and cornbread. Sounds to me like a great deal!
On the negative site, could be very loud. Will not recommend it if you are on a date. You would look cheap. But if you are with friends a great place to go.
Dallas BBQ was faithfully serving customers at least 15 years before the barbeque craze hit New York. (my first visit to this particular restaurant was in 1989) And I am sure it will continue to serve customers long after BBQ goes the way of the "pu pu platter" and the fondue pot.
Why? Value for money in a decent atmosphere. It's in the basement of an expensive upper west side co-op, in what looks like a converted italian restaurant. I wouldn't exactly call it a masterpiece of decorating (I love the wild west murals that no doubt replaced the murals of ancient rome or something italianate). However, it's pleasant with a warm, laid back vibe.
I eat here (mostly by takeout) twice a month at least. Usually double white meat quarter chicken, baked potato, slaw. The steak is pretty good for the price, but I go for the chicken on account of my slowing metabolism. Chicken is not my favorite food, but they do some pretty good chicken for the money - super tender and juicy.
PS: If you happen to be there on a Friday or Saturday, you might notice a low key buppie pickup scene at the little bar.

Basing this review on the take out and delivery experiences only. I have eaten there only a handful of times but ordered out many. It was a great place for group dinners because there was always something appealing on the menu for everyone but that would skew my opinion of in house dining.
The food is great but again, you really need to sample a couple of different things off the menu to get a good handle on what's good. I'm not a big fan of babyback ribs but they were okay there. I stumbled across the beef ribs one day and never looked back. They suffer somewhat in the transport but hell, they still taste good. The onion loaf is also quite tasty but you do need to blot it down with paper towels. I also think their honey chicken (whole chicken fried and drizzled with honey) is delicious as well.
Overall, inexpensive and good if not the healthiest choices. I'm sure there is healthier stuff on the menu but I don't go to a bbq place looking to cut calories.

I've been going here since I was a teenager. I love their drinks. I always get a Texas Size Pina Colada Wild Berry!!! Yummy!!! I remember the chicken wings being tasty even though I hated the fact that they didn't burn off the feathers completely. Their ceasar salad was also delicious. The portion was so big that you could split it between 4 or more people. I like their cornbread too. The prices are very reasonable and food is good!!! Bon apetit!!!
I walked by this spot one day while working and , being a native Texan, I actually got excited and made a mental note to check it out - I Yelped it and it sounded interesting so we checked it out...
It had a weird "cafeteria" feel when we walked in so we opted to sit in the bar..the employees were very casual but seemed to enjoy working there - the manager (I'm guessing) was relentlessly picking on a young cashier dude for the lamest things - but I have to admit it was a little entertaining.
The food...I had chili and a spinach salad - ok the salad was HUGE pretty sure they dumped a WHOLE bag of prewashed baby spinach in a bowl - a few sliced mushrooms around the edge and I think some walnuts sprinkled on top and pita wedges. I was happy to load up on greens so I wasn't that disappointed. The chili, just weird. can't say anymore than that - very meaty - I'll give them that. But weird.Ishould add I'm a bit of a chili snob - quite picky. But of course I ate it all......
My dh had a rack of ribs and based on the pile of bones he left behind - they must not have been bad.
We had a GREAT bartender and he bought each of us a drink, I started with a beer with dinner and then switched to wine - my dh had a beer and switched to margaritas which he was quite impressed with we both stumbled away quite happy and the bill was half what we would have expected....... fun spot - we'll go back.

#1 place to hear MTA workers discussing abusing their wives. And laughing.
Okay, maybe this doesn't happen EVERY time. I have been to most of the Dallas BBQ's in Manhattan because my boyfriend loves southern food, and we both love giant drinks. Although, those Texas sized margaritas are dangerous. Not because of the alcohol, but because of the sugar. GROSS. But the beer also comes in giant cups, so you do have a variety of comically large drinks to choose from.
The amazing thing about Dallas BBQ is it accomodates people who want to eat until they can no longer walk, and people who are health conscious. Their shrimp and spinach salads are fresh enough, healthy enough, and flavorful enough. They are not terribly exciting, but the point is, it can be done.
I am mostly giving this 3 stars for the good times I have had there. Other than the incident with the morally-lacking MTA workers, it is somehow very easy to have fun at D BBQ. This guy I know who never has fun anywhere had fun there. It is big, bright, unpretentious (VERY unpretentious), cheap, and filled with people laughing.

I've been here a couple of times. And it's alright. The ribs aren't so thick and juicy and the chicken is kind of dry. The decor in this place could use a little bit of cleaning up, too. But hey, it's cheap bbq. On one hand, I guess for a casual dinner with some hungry friends, this is a great place to eat. On the other hand, this is probably the last place I would want to take a date.

I was expecting a lot more from Dallas BBQ. Since there are so many in the city and hearing people frequenting the place often, I decided to check out their 72nd street location. The prices were fair, the wings were tasty, but the ribs were not that great.
I'm a big fan of ribs and finish up my plate quick, but this is one of the first times I didn't finish my entire slab. That's proof enough this place isn't that great.

Definitely not healthy for you, cheap, and pretty darn good.
I still like the 23rd and 8th location the best. This feels a bit weird in comparison.
One time when I was here for a business meeting we ordered a bunch of items off of the menu to share. As a joke one of the guys thought he would be sly and didn't order a Texas Sized Margarita like everyone else so I told the waitress when he said he would like a glass of red wine to bring him a Texas Sized glass of red wine... AND SHE DID!!!!
Of course she charged accordingly but let's just say that he was completely inappropriate for the rest of the evening (buggered out of his mind!).

Strong Suggestions: I am not from the south but I love this place! Try the BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwich, the chicken fingers, and or the pork ribs. GREAT FOR LUNCH!

Dallas BBQ is a great choice when you are hosting football saturday for a bunch of boys!!!! The chicken wings are fantastic! Not off the charts spicy but huge!!! They are actual wings of a chicken!! Skin not super mushy, lots of meat, and really great flavor. Barbeque beans were very tasty as well. And the baby back ribs were pretty good. And this place is ridiculously cheap! Good delivery place...

I kind of expected more from Dallas BBQ.
It was definitely less expensive that I expected, which is always a plus when I go out to eat.
To start off, I ordered a frozen margarita and it was pretty delicious! I just ordered a small, not a "Texas sized" one, and it was certainly large enough!
For my entree, I ordered Carolina Pulled Pork and fries. The fries were good - they were obviously made fresh from actual potatoes and thus were very tasty. The Pulled Pork... my dad grew up in North Carolina, so I'm very familiar with *actual* Carolina Pulled Pork BBQ. That said, whatever BBQ I had at Dallas was completely different from anything I've ever had in North Carolina. It was alright - but it definitely wasn't Carolina BBQ! I also had some corn bread and it was pretty good, although I wish they served hush puppies!
Now, clearly, some NYC chain is not going to be as good or authentic as an actual little mom and pop BBQ restaurant in the south. I guess why I was kind of disappointed is that I had been to Brother Jimmy's in NYC and was expecting similar fare, and Dallas did not quite measure up. I'd take Brother Jimmy's over Dallas any day. Because not only does Brother Jimmy's have *actual* Carolina BBQ, they also have hush puppies. And what more do you need?
But Dallas wasn't terrible! It was just okay. The service was fast and our waitress was very sweet. The people watching at this place, however, is why I would go back. I did some four star people watching at Dallas BBQ fo' sure.

This is where we go when we are missing southern cooking. Their cornbread is moist and good, you'll eat more of it than you wanted to. The ribs are ok, I've had better but I've also had worse, the service is average. HUGE PORTIONS ABOUND. Get a sampler platter and split it. Trust me, it will be plenty for 2 people. This is where Tom and I usually end up Sunday afternoon. It's sad, but our most delicious guilty pleasure.

I was very impressed! Where can you get a BIG ass plate of bbq for under $12?! Not in the bay! lol I had the beef ribs which were HUGE and very fatty but after I was done wrestling them I got all the good meat I could ask for! The fries are SO good! AND the fruit margarita I got didn't need the extra $1 shot b/c it was already SUPER strong. I hope they open a Dallas BBQ in the bay area. It's a total homie hang out you can bring your boy buddies to. Service is also VERY good and this is why they deserve a 4 star rating!

This is by no means good barbeque. It is, though, decent and cheap food and drink. I'm certainly a fan of their appetizers. The wings are huge and spicy and who doesn't love fried onion in all of its glorious forms? The drinks are ginormous and not too skimpy on the alcohol.
The ambiance does leave a lot to be desired. It's usually a loud crowd on a busy night.

Cheap!
Let me list the positives
1) Cheap
2) If you are on a budget and want to pig out and drink cheap drinks then this is the place to go.
3) The best thing on the menu in my opinion are the hot wings. They are huge and most importantly they are HOT. Your mouth will burn.
Let me list the negatives
1) Because this place is cheap be prepared to dine with well lets say some not so classy people. Multiple times I have either seen someone puke at the table (from the extremely cheap and potent drinks) or have spotted someone puking outside. Not good.
2) Service
All in all, the purpose of this place is to eat a lot of cheap food for a low price. As far as the quality of the BBQ--I wont even go there.
