Dale - the comedian with shears! Tonight was one of the best experiences I have ever had; and I have Dale to thank for this. I had a tough day at work and I didn't feel very pretty. Well, not only did Dale make me laugh the entire time I was with him, but he made me feel like a million bucks! Dale has true talent and I am reminded of this every time I look at my sassy new do.

I have very long hair and am very picky about the length that is taken off. He always listens and has NEVER EVER cut too much off or too little.
I've never had a bad experience and am always happy when I leave. Wish I could go every week!!! -

I had really high hopes for this hair cut, because of the Yelp reviews and referral from a friend. Unfortunately, it did not go well.
When I saw him start the cut with thinning shears, I started to panic. Because of his great reputation, though, I figured I'd give him the benefit of the doubt. Big mistake. He cut my entire head using only thinning shears! I didn't realize how bad the result was, at first, because he put so much leave-in conditioner in it that the split ends weren't obvious. After that stuff washed out, I saw that he basically frayed all of my hair. The texture has changed, the ends are sloppy, and he really didn't give it any shape. I'm very disappointed. -

Dale is the best hairdresser I have ever had.
He only did my hair twice so far, but I would never go to anyone else anymore.
My hair is very hard to work on, but Dale was able to make it look gorgeous. -

Picture this: You're walking down the street (Shattuck Ave. in this case) with your shiny hair bouncing around your shoulders as if there's a fan in front of you the entire time. Grown men and teenage boys alike are doing double takes and saying things like "Dayum!" The bums are so busy staring that they forget to ask you if you can spare some change. No, this is not a poorly written shampoo commercial; it's my reality every time I leave Dale's salon. FACT.
I don't just get a haircut from Dale. I get an entire beauty-enhancing experience from him. His hilarious conversation provides me with a huge smile and glow, while the magic he works into my hair provides it with shine and bounce. As I'm extremely protective of my long, ultra thick hair, I am quite appreciative of Dale's ability to give me just a trim when I ask for one and his willingness to give me complimentary bang trims. I also love that he uses Moroccan Oil, which I've been using for several years now to control my frizzy waves.
My two-year relationship with Dale is the longest one I've ever had with a stylist, so that's saying something. And the reason I'll no longer go to him is not the same reason why I've terminated all my previous relationships with hair stylists. I've only reluctantly had to find a new stylist because of my frequent bang trims, so I need someone geographically closer.
Now that I can no longer go to Dale, I finally feel that I can share him with the Yelp community. Disclaimer: No guarantees that the Berkeley bums will be so wowed that they'll momentarily forget to panhandle. -

Dale is straight up awesome. He is hilarious and warm, makes constructive suggestions, communicates well and listens to your input. He gave me a cut that was exactly what I asked for, and when I came back a week later because I wasn't in love with it, he stayed late and rocked it out (or as he put it, "bitched it up") completely free of charge. He wouldn't even let me tip him! Going in for an appointment with him is a total treat, and of course it also doesn't hurt that his place is in an insanely gorgeous Julia Morgan building. Love love love!

I've been going to Dale for several years now. Everyone knows how it is: once you find a great hairstylist, hold on to him/her! Dale does a great job on cuts, however, he is the guru of hair color!! No one has done color on my hair like Dale does. He's great at knowing which colors will look the best with your skin color and he's great at doing touch ups (it blends!!). I always enjoy my time with him and my husband loves visiting him too. On top of his great work, his prices are great! I travel 40 minutes just for him.

Dale is awesome. Gave me an awesome haircut that made me look like dude from Chromeo. Well, I guess I just look like him anyway... but now we're one and the same! Almost.
Anyway, the place is a freaking castle, but his salon is very clean and cute and he's such an awesome guy. Will definitely come back here when I'm back living in the bay. -

So I went to Dale's yesterday to get my hair highlighted and he did it so quickly I was in shock. I have very thick curly hair and allocated like 3 hours to get it done. He was done in less than an hour. I could not believe it. And it was done very well.
After a rinse off he blowed out my hair completely pin straight in less than an hour. It was so unbelievable. I got compliments for the rest of the day.
Later I noticed that the top of my head wasn't as light as the rest of my hair so I called back to see if I could get it touched up on. They were super receptive and Dale saw me again today and made it look awesome! For being a college student it was a bit pricey but then again I am used to my good friend giving me discounts. For the area, he is great.
He was also super nice to talk to and super funny! He's just an all round good guy. -

I have been going to Dale for awhile now. I waited to write my review because I've been to stylists who are great the first couple times then don't care anymore. Dale is not that type, he's fantastic!!!!
I came to him with some seriously bad dye job(s) that I attempted myself in the process of moving and not having a stylist. He fixed it PERFECT the first time. And every time since, he's gotten it just right. He does it so fast, I'm always amazed. His cuts are perfect too. It's like he just knows what to do and it's magic.
Plus, he's a great person and makes you feel right at home the whole time. I have never felt as comfortable as here. If you are considering a new stylist, go here. You will not regret it. -

Dale does exactly what I want, better than I can ever describe it. My color always looks gorgeous & vibrant and the cut looks perfect even after it's grown out.
I can never seem to clear my schedule when it comes to hair maintenance, but somehow that never seems to be an issue. Dale works magic in some unexplainable way. I still get asked where I get my hair done months after having it colored or cut.
For some reason, the salon I went to before Dale would insist on giving me a cut I didn't want. I could never get my hair to grow out because they kept cutting it all off. The first time I went to Dale, I told him that I was growing out my hair. He trimmed the perfect amount. My hair kept it's length and looked flawless!

For half a year, I'd been contemplating getting a really dramatic hair cut. I haven't had bangs in about ten years and I decided it was time to bring them back. I realized this was not a task I could entrust to Super Cuts, my usual stand by. After some research, I made an appointment with Dale.
I've never really splurged on a hair cut before, but I'm glad I did. First off, Dale is really friendly and makes you feel comfortable. He doesn't push anything on you but really tries to work with you to figure out what you want. He's also very conscientious of that fact that not every girl is willing/able to spend a half an hour plus in the morning on styling and gives tips based on your own experience/routine on how to work with your do. Also, as he's working on your hair he explains what he's doing so you're not just sitting there out of the loop.
As for the cut itself, it's definitely the best I've ever had! I'm very happy with my straight cut bangs, which require less maintenance than I thought they would. I have natural waves in my hair which usually makes layers look awkward on me. However, the layers he put in my hair look awesome every day, even on the days after I've slept on it funny :P. They look even better as my hair starts to grow out.
I never would have paid $60 for haircut before, but now that I've had one from Dale I realize that it's a steal for what you get! I'm converted.
Super Cuts, I think we need some time off... It's not you, it's me. -

BELIEVE THE HYPE! I know what you are all thinking, how could any business, especially a hair salon, get pretty much all 5 star ratings? Is this for real?
Believe it baby. Dale is absolutely amazing and, as another reviewer said, Magical. If you are looking for a new stylist to trust, look no further. Trust me, if yelp thought these reviews were fake, they would have been deleted.
Dale is.....
-Very friendly, easy to chat it up with
-Knows what you want, even if you don't know what you want. I swear he's a mind reader. He asks you want you want and you can be kind of vague and he still gives you what you want, dare I even say 3x more than what you wanted?
-Great price for what you are getting. I've paid less, and I got less...way less.
-He's fast, efficient and has you on the go in no time
-Does not push you about hair products, but does give great suggestions for hair upkeep (and I am no high maintenance girl)
So easy to make an appointment too. Dale has a receptionist who promptly answers the phone (they are closed on Mondays, FYI). I called the day of and they had a cancelation and was able to squeeze me in and when I arrived (early), I didn't even feel like I was squeezed in. Yes!
Just a note, this place is a bit hard to find. You need to walk right into the Berkeley City Club, head straight down the hall and the salon is all the way at the end on the left. If you can't find it, ask the person at the front desk and they will direct you.
The place is not huge like your traditional hair salons, it's small but super clean and cozy. It's like Dale's your best friend doing you a favor and giving you a haircut. So awesome.
So don't even hesitate, make an appointment today and you will not regret it. -

Dale did my hair for my wedding on July 2nd, 2011, as well as my mom's hair, aunt's, and other members of our family. He is fantastic. My mom and I knew we just had to work with him after our initial consult. He is not only talented but warm, fun, generous, and intuitive.
I gave Dale very minimal suggestions regarding my hair and he did a stunning up-do for me for my wedding ceremony. He then took my hair down for the reception and styled it again. I loved both looks. Getting my hair done was one of the most fun, exciting, and special things about the whole day. -

I actually look forward to getting my hair cut by Dale. I am always impressed with his ability to cut my hair. Since I am mixed race, it is often difficult to find someone who is able to work with my hair type.

Believe it... he's as amazing as the reviews say. I walked in, asked him to make me beautiful, and walked out looking great! I haven't been this happy with a haircut in years... and I didn't even realize how bad my old haircut was until I saw the new one. It's everything I asked for... even easy to maintain... how did he do it?
Dale made me realize that it really does make a difference to have a professional haircut. Yes, it was $65 -- a bit more than the $45 suggested in other reviews -- but worth every penny.
Oh yeah, and I have to give props to the location, in the Berkeley City Club... what a nice building... getting my hair made me feel like I was a stylish dame from days of yore. -

I recently got married at the Berkley City Club and Dale did my hair and my sister's hair. He did such an amazing job. I can't say enough about how awesome he is. And he even fixed my husband's hair for free. Dale is the best. Plus he's fun to talk to. Love him.

I stopped by for my first hair appointment with Dale and I'm definitely impressed. I've never had such a quick appointment with such nice results! He only took about 30-45 mins to shampoo/cut/and blowdry my hair, and I ended up with a beautiful new 'do! I totally recommend Dale for anyone who wants nice personalized service and non-awkward small talk.

When I called La Tour to make an appointment with Dale I was in utter shock when they said he had moved to a new salon. I was devastated and heartbroken! "What will I do?!" I thought to myself. Luckily, about 5 seconds later the receptionist at La Tour gave me his new number and I was able to make an appointment!!
OF COURSE, I came out looking FABULOUS, as always. Dale blew out my hair perfectly and calmed my nerves about meeting the boyfriend's parents that night.
His salon is located in the Berkeley City Club straight down the hall on the left. You NEED to head over there because you will feel like a new (more beautiful) person!
I plan my life just so that I can get haircuts by Dale instead of anywhere else. I've never heard ANYTHING negative about him.
VISIT ASAP! -

I LOVE DALE!!!!!!!!!!!! He's fun and talkative, which is great, PLUS he does awesome work. I always leave him feeling cute and ready to conquer the world. I love that he's able to have fun with it. I'm super indecisive, and generally don't know what I'm looking for. So I can just go in and say, "Make me pretty!" and he does it! Other stylist sometimes get flustered that they don't have a picture to copy, but he is always imaginative, does things I wouldn't have thought of, and does a GREAT job. Accurately priced for his work. PLUS he's always able to squeeze you into his schedule pretty quickly. He's great!!!

Somehow, he ALWAYS gets it right, and I love him for it!

I went in about 5 weeks ago because I wanted to cut my hair drastically short and was willing to pay more to get it done right. Dale definitely did it right! his cuts are $60+ but mine turned out so well I didn't worry about the price at all. He's very attentive and chatty and asked to see the photo I brought (of emma watson) a couple times to make sure he was doing it the way I wanted. I was doubtful at first and definitely scared of what I was doing, but Dale made me feel so at ease right away. It took about 45 mins. I need a trim now, as it's growing out, and I want to go back to him so badly, but I can't bring myself to pay $60 for just a little trim, though I'm sure he would do it perfectly. Call ahead!

I must say that Dale is the best thing a girl (or guy) could ever wish for in terms of their mane I'm not one that ever gave much of a thought to my hair, and now realize it's because nobody else ever really cut it the right way, nor gave me good advice on what to do with my hair to suit my face. Dale is all that. He is a beautiful artist and I so appreciate him and what he does. I get compliments all the time now on my hair. ...And he seems to enjoy what he does and is excited to make you happy with what transpires. He just knows what to do, and if you bring a picture, he'll tell you if it will work on you, and if so he gets busy and makes it happen.
He has a wonderful personality and it's always so much fun to come in and chat it up with him.
Girls, this is your guy.

I found Dale through the many suggestions on yelp.
I have to admit I was a little nervous. Although I had seen many positive suggestions for him, I am far from adventurous when it comes to my hair. I also don't have $200+ to spend on my hair every two-three months. I called and made an appointment. I was happy to hear they worked late as well as on Saturdays. My first appointment I went in, arriving a few minutes prior to my appointment & he was ready for me RIGHT when my appointment started. I have gone to many places where my appointment was at one time and still had to sit around for 20-30 min longer. I told him the basics of what I wanted and what I didn't want and he understood and gave me exactly what I was looking for. He had my hair cut, colored (full color), styled and such in an hour (for $110). I have since gone back, he gave me a SUPER cute style (which I get compliments on continually) and highlights (again in an hour). The highlights were very natural and look like I have always had them. Even my boyfriend liked my hair color (and he NEVER does.)
I think Dale is great, I really enjoy his personality and his skill. Yes, there are other places, but he charges how much some salons charge for an apprentice or someone with only a few years of experience and he has MANY (MANY) more years of experience.
My only suggestion: if you do go on the weekends, give yourself time for parking. Its only a block or two from telegraph & parking can be difficult if a game is going on. There are parking garages near by though & I was told they validate at one of the garages ( I can ALWAYS find street parking though). -

I went to Dale based on Yelp reviews of him from when he used to work at La Tour. I have curly/wavy hair and in my 15 years of living in the US (east coast and west coast), I had tried various hairdressers at all price points and hadn't found a favorite that I wanted to go back to. I think I've finally found one in Dale!
He knew exactly what I meant when I said I didn't want "Christmas tree" layers and did a great cut, taking off volume from the middle and creating more body on top where I needed it. He worked quickly without making me feel rushed, and told me I could come back later for a re-do if I decided I didn't like the cut.
Also, he was a joy to hang out and chat with. I typically like to zone out and read a magazine at hair and nail salons and don't enjoy chatting. But with Dale, it instantly felt like I was catching up with an old friend. -

dale is really sweet, easy to talk to and works fast. im used to spending about 3 hours in the salon but i was in and out in about an hour. natural highlights and a simple cut. its about $170 for color, cut and blowdry.
my only complaint was that i would have liked a tighter weave because it looks like i still have roots. and its a bit chunky in areas. and an all-over toner/color to even things out. and a blow-out not just a blow-dry. -

He's absolutely amazing. I told him I was mostly bored with my hair and have been wanting to change things up, but no short cuts. He completely understood. I asked him if I should try bangs, highlights, and/or perms and he told me I will look fab with long side swept bangs (for my oval face shape, and the long bangs will look sophisticated yet chic). He also told me not to get highlights and perms because he absolutely loves the texture/color of my hair now (loved how he didn't push services and was completely honest). Complete sweetheart.
He washed my hair and put in this oil product that made my hair irresistably silky and smelled really good. All the while, we were discussing cocktails, shoes, shopping, miami beach, relationships, you name it! He was cutting my hair while talking as if styling hair is his second nature.
My hair was gorgeous after he blew dried it.
ALSO, over the phone he said he charged $55, but he only charged me $45. DEFINITELY worth it even if it were $55. A typical haircut from an unknown asian hair salon is already about $20-25 for my a-little-bit-past-shoulder-length hair, the $45 is COMPLETELY worth it since it included shampoo, condition, and oil treatment (which he gives you a 3 month sample afterwards).
He also said his haircuts usually lasts 4 months (I just love his honesty) and he gives free bang trims for returning customers! I love it! Will definitely come back after 4 months. -

I totally agree with Cesie below. I also have curly hair (not thick!) and am used to highlights taking 2-3 hours. I got a cut and a highlight and was done within 1.5 hours. The color looked wonderful and natural. He cut my hair incredible quickly and I was expecting nothing exciting from it, but the trim looked great. He blew it out so gorgeous. I can never wear my hair straight and down but after he did it, I didn't wash my hair for a week... I didn't want his beautiful work to disappear! I have been to maybe 7 people to get my hair cut and colored and he is one of the two that I thought was worth the money and that I would return to.

I don't know why I didn't write this review earlier, after a horrible experience at another salon, which I really regret and I should just have gone back to Dale (i was thinking to try out a new place, so stupid...) anyways, Dale was just great!!!! I have long hair and I'm really picky about my hair cut; I would be depressed for weeks if my hair came out wrong. Dale is really sweet and easy to talk to, he really listens to what you want and he works fast. He's just so gentle and everything, the whole process was very pleasant. I love him!!! I wanted a very simple trim (not too much) and low layered, it came out perfectly and it grew our very nicely, that's very important!! I would definitely go back, this is my to-go place in Berkeley, no more trying...

Dale is awesome.
I decided to ask Dale to do my hair for my wedding, since he was highly recommended by (and in the same building as) the studio where I get skin treatments.
On the day of, not only had he agreed to go in to work on me on a Sunday, normally his day off, but he did it with a smile, made both of us laugh - I wasn't too stressed out, but our time with Dale definitely made me feel more relaxed and cheerful - on your wedding day, that's especially awesome. THEN he stayed on to do my MOH's hair even though she hadn't booked time with him, making her look and feel great after she had been feeling a bit blah all day. He stuck around as I was getting my make up done to ensure that the hair still looked right and I was happy. He got me a glass of water, even offered me snacks. He also took time to coach me on how to get all of the product out (to avoid the dreaded morning after hair) asked me to send pictures and let him know how it went. I'm also sure he undercharged me. All on his day off. How awesome is that??
I worked with some great vendors for my wedding, but Dale was among the best. He's warm, professional, and his work is amazing. I've gone to some friendly and competent stylists since I moved here, but all but Dale have been just ok in terms of the work, the conversation and the overall experience. I will DEFINITELY be back to get my hair cut, and for any future up-do needs. :) -

Since moving back to the Bay, I had to cheat on my beloved stylist in SD. I'm gonna be here for awhile and these roots were just growing out of control. Making weekend trips to SD didn't seem so cost effective.
I literally spent a couple of days on Yelp reading reviews on the best colorists and hairstylists in the Bay Area. I was completely taken by one...Dale Oxley of La Tour, only to find out he is no longer there! But after much research I found him hehehehe...
...and he has a studio in Berkeley! And the man lives up to the hype. Dale is not only an amazing hairstylist, but he is such a friendly guy who made me feel comfortable (and constantly laughing in my seat) in an instant.
You come in and the man KNOWS what you want. Which is good because I didn't do my homework with what I wanted my hair. I just wanted to come out with Victoria Secret model like hair.

DALE IS FANTASTIC. I have somewhat complicated hair. It is thick and curly and I have been straightening it since 8th grade and I am now 22. I have had a lot of trouble in the past getting the exact haircut I want because hair dressers sometimes take liberties and do not always listen to me, but not Dale. I have been going to him for a while now and every time I leave with the perfect haircut. He is hilarious as well. So happy I found him!

I am thrilled that Karma has returned to the East Bay. I have never had a hairdresser who really understood naturally curly hair quite like she does. She not only takes her time to give you a customized cut that suits you as an individual and your particular needs, but she gives you helpful hints on how to maintain your hair so that it looks as good as when you walk out of the salon. I felt both pampered and like a creative work in progress as she snipped away. The end result exceeded my expectations. She's a gem.

My roomate recommended Dale, she said "your hair will grow out so nicely if you get a cut at Dale's" and I went once last year, man I was addicted to his sweet welcoming gesture and the wonderful hair products he put on as he cut/styles my hair!! Feels like heaven :) He's also a very good listener and so willing to give advice. He shows me how to curl hair and a quick fix to make my hair naturally wavy and never charge me extra, he even charges me less often times! He doesn't seem to be money/tip driven at all like many of the hair salons I've been to. I will be back for more!! :D
