Ahhhh, memories...... *smile* *sigh* *giggle*
(picture the screen going squiggliy in front of you, as we reminisce, take a walk down memory lane with me, won't you? It's worth it!, I promise)
~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~~ ~~~~~
Mid 1980's,
Rutland, VT,
special date night during college....(gee, wonder what ever happened to Larry and Bob)
DINING at THE SIRLOIN Saloon in Rutland!!!
mmmmm, the yummy Teriyaki Sirloin, the incredible salad bar........
~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~~ OK.... come back to the present.....
Why, you are wondering, am I mentioning this? "WHYYYY?" you ask....
Because....The SIRLOIN SALOON and DAKOTA are ONE in the SAME!
YES!!!!! It's true! I kid you not!
I cannot tell you how over the moon I was about a decade ago when I discovered this wonderful fact!
Yah, well and then moved away and have to suffer in exile....
BUT, I'm back, and they finally built this location here in Rocky hill (LOL, back in 2000, we had seen a huge sign on 91, right where the current location is, and we tried to go there, but discovered that sign was for the Avon location...and also they were planning on building one here in Rocky Hill eventually.....But we went to the Avon location and it was so worth it!.
Well, not sure when it happened, that they built the Rocky Hill location..... but I have been to this location a few times, even before my recent move back to Hartford.
It is just as yummy as I remembered it!
I love the salad bar (I'm a fussy, veggie-hating salad person, but there is quite enuf for me to overload my salad dish with here, plus the crotons are killer, and this is the only place in YEARS I have been able to get homemade Cracked Pepper Parmesan dressing, without having it be some 'peppercorn ranch' crap. Ick. All their dressings are homemade and it's a beautiful thing.....
I am also fussy about steak, pretty much Filet Mignon is the only thing I'll go for. They marinate their Teriyaki Sirloin for a long time, but they don't normally do their filet like that. THEY WILL, however, put some of the glaze on for cooking, and it comes out lovely....They also serve the filet with some homemade Sauce 'Bearnaise, which is delish!
Their baked Potatoes are ALWAYS perfect. never had one too soft or too hard. (sometimes too hard can be a problem, and too soft is always a problem! LOL) :oP
Hubby had the Cowboy Steak tonight, he loved it. He has had the Prime rib in past and liked it (not raving LOVED it, but liked it).
I have never had dessert here (too full) and i even brought 1/2 my 9oz filet home....
Our waitress Kara was AWESOME....she was very attentive (wish i could remember last times waitress, she was NOT great and had a snotty attitude, but Kara was the bomb!) ASK FOR KARA! I had one little issue i wont mention because they handled it so wonderfully, and professionally, that they did the exact right thing and left a wonderful impression on us!
If u want a nice steak in a casual atmosphere (can get loud later, and the wait will be horrific if u go after 6pm on a fri/sat.). We got here at 5ish, and they were just opening.
DON'T let all the cars in the parking lot SCARE YOU OFF! MOST OF THE CARS BELONG TO THE RESTAURANT ''ON THE BORDER''......
So I couldn't figure out where to go a couple Fridays ago, and wound up settling for this place. Although, I didn't realize the degree of settling I'd be forced to undertake. I ordered Fillet Mignon. It turned out okay. Beyond that, things went downhill. My friend's fish was undercooked, looked like sushi. She also asked for, and was told they didn't have, a green vegetable; no peas, no green beans, no broccoli. Ridiculous. So she had to settle for carrots--slightly random wouldn't you say? Fish and carrots. On top of that, they forgot the random carrots, just serving her a plate with a fish on it.
So I'm eating away, when I realize that the waitress also forgot the baked potato that was supposed to come with my twenty-something dollar meal. WTF?? By that time I was just ready to get out of there. But that was not to be. About halfway through the meal, the lights suddenly got twice as bright. We had to squint it was so bright. I mentioned it to our waitress who, I believe, was so clueless she thought we were paying compliments.
You know, after I rethink the whole experience, this might be the complete shittiest dining experience I've ever had. And you ask why I'm giving it two stars? Because I still have four months left in Connecticut, and if any state's going to give me an opportunity for a shitty experience, it's going to be here. All I have to do is go into just about any of their four Mexican restaurants. Adios.
Recent update: Dunkin' Donuts did the trick!
See my review for the Avon location. It's pretty much exactly the same, although this location did e-mail me a $10 coupon for no reason! I always find this salad bar to be better stocked and looks just a teeny bit fresher. I can't wait to go while I'm home this week!!
