Guys, I truly believe the best way to impress a girl is to give her jewelry!  I say this because there's been many times that I have given my girl friends pretty shiny things they can wear and I have seen the evil eyes prey upon their boyfriends and hear comments like "Oh, its nice that my gay boyfriend knows me and buys me things that I want, while my real boyfriend dosen't have a clue!"

With that in mind, be sure to check out Dakota J for the wonderful selection of jewelry, clothes and gifts.  The jewelry cases has everything from unique pieces to fun costume rings and bracelets that are great to accessorize and turn a drab outfit to something new.  There is even a section near the register where all the jewelry is 50% off!  Please Note...their is a hot modern necklace with a glass rectangle attached to it with the words "believe" on it for $35.00 that can easily be a unisex item!

The store also has a collection of great purses and dresses for sale.  They have also added fragrances to the store as well as a huge assortment of every girl's favorite...Spanx!  If you want to give a gift that's funny, unique and fun...I highly recommend this tissue box cover they are selling for $12.00!  The cover allows you to put a picture of yourself, dog, enemy, etc...and there's a hole of where the nose should be and this is where the tissue is dispensed out!  You have to check it out to see how cool it is!

Oh and guys...don't get a girl a car roadside assistance kit for her birthday!  (true story!)

Being from NYC, my standards are pretty tough.  I stumbled upon this store about 2 years ago and got a great necklace that I love.  At one point, I thought I lost the necklace and went by to see if I could find something similar.  Telling the saleswoman my woes, she asked what the piece looked like and determined that the artist who made it was based in Atlanta.  She offered to have another custom made.  I was so thrilled!  Well, I had them make one similar but different colors in the event I found it (which I eventually did).  And I love the second piece she made.  Fast forward a few months and my friends 5 yr old daughter wants my necklace.  She loves it.  I tell her I will have one made especially for her.  I went back a few weeks ago and told the saleswoman the scoop.  Well, the artist came back with a most beautiful, sparkly, pink, purple, perfect for a 5 yr old rendition of my necklace!  Dakota J's is fabulous!

This place has a a good number of basic pieces hidden among their more colorful, attention-getting stuff.  In particular, I appreciated the plain black slacks with the hidden wide elastic band - a great thing for women who want that tight fitting waist, regardless of gaining or losing a couple of pounds.  The only thing that might make you think twice is the price.  I also saw a dress here that I had seen the week before in another boutique in Atlanta for much less, although they did have a better range of sizes.  Don't forget to check out the small sale rack in the back of the store for some better deals.

Though Dakota J's is not exactly my style, I like how the boutique is unique from other places on the Highlands strip. My favorite merchandise in this store is the beautiful custom jewelry. The clothing is rather bizarre, and I cannot envision many people buying their merchandise. However, Dakota J's is always filled with customers when I pass by. The fact that the prices are not outrageous probably helps. I once found an adorable blue and white checkered tank top for $40. I recommend browsing through this boutique, but it's definitely not a universally trendy style.

Me and the buyer for Dakota J's will probably never be shopping buddies.  My tastes lean more to tailored, sleek, simple and Dakota J's likes flowy, sequins, fluffy, and bohemian.  It's alright though, we can agree to disagree. This store has been around for at least 5 years that I know of and I wish them continuing success.  The Highlands is a tough crowd with very specific tastes so if they know what works for them then right on for them.  In addition to clothes, this girly store features accessories-jewelry and bags, and gift items such as wall hangings and other amusing crafty decorative decor.  It is located next to Metropolitan Deluxe on Highland just past Virginia Ave. park behind the building.
