As a secret santa present to my friend back December 07, I bought a lot of stuff from Daiso that added up. One being this inflatable contraption with the shape of a goose head. To cut a long story short, it was the highlight of the Christmas party. You really get what you pay for.

Please, enjoy this photo:

cute store!  just went there to buy asian snacks.  they have a lot of stuff so if you're looking for the dollar store turned japan then you're in luck.  although it's supercheap, its also final sale, no returns or exchanges.

We had some time to kill while waiting for our number to be called at Mayflower, so my friend and I decided to look around Daiso. She lives in Sac, and has only been to a Daiso in Canada. I didn't think I would buy more than a bento box, but after ten minutes, we both realized that we really needed more time at this store. So, after having dim sum, we returned and I walked out with $70 worth of stuff. I know, it's a disease. I thought I was in love with the Mt. View store, but this one takes the cake. It just seemed to have more stuff, and better stuff. Maybe it's the layout or something, but I was able to find so much more than I normally do at the Mt. View location. The guy who rang me up was super nice and bagged everything for us, even though they have a self-bagging policy.

I'm really apprehensive when buying stuff at dollar stores, flea markets, and stores that eagerly advertise themselves as being "substandard at premium prizes (exclamation mark, exclamation mark)".  This place actually gets it right.

I'm not sure what kind of sweat factories this whips, but this stuff is actually pretty good.  I've bought a messenger bag, folders, paper sleeves, paper materials, notepads, and other containers here on separate occasions.  They've all worked out well and still hold up.  The quality surprises me.  It's great to walk out the door satisfied without breaking the bank.

This store is about the size of an average Blockbusters.  They carry a pretty huge selection of goods that range from cookware to packaging to packaged snack foods.  Unlike other discount stores, this place is very organized.  You won't find items scattered on the floor or items casually strung about.

This place generally has a handful of people rummaging through the aisles and aisles of items.  All purchases are final so you can throw away the receipt once you get it.  They accept debit and credit I believe.  Visit on a weekday to avoid the crowds.

Oh my gosh!  I thought leaving me alone in Target was bad, but when my fiance and I were waiting for a table at Mayflower, we decided to check out this Daiso.

They have all types of housewares and almost all of the items are $1.50.  I couldn't believe all of the stuff in there that I know I most likely don't really need, but since it was so cheap and so appealing, I ended up spending close to $50 there.  They have everything from pens, to plates, to dog supplies to decor and so much more.  I think I can wander the aisles for hours just looking at all of the neat things they have there.

Overall, I'd go back.  I love it there!

Now were talkin!  This is my kinda store; way cheaper than Ikea & better.  All sorts of neat, cool useful things way cheaper than your usual retail stores.  They have so much stuff that you don't know where to start from.

I am in love with this place!  I feel like a five year old girl looking for what I can possibly collect next.  The items they have here are ... what..?.. awesome!  I mean, how can anything possibly between 1-10 dollars be so so great? I have to have this, I gotta get this and I must to have that!!  Gimme gimme, put it in the basket.  Spend spend spend on unnecessary things is what I do when I get here.   Explore and enjoy a disposable spree.

I'm sorry to say I was somewhat disappointed with this store.  As a shopaholic I didn't find much to buy here.

Although the store was clean and organized it seemed to be a little junky.

The toys, stationery and household stuff just weren't that interesting or appealing.  I was hoping to buy some fun and cute plates or platters and the ones they had were boring.  When I went to another Daiso they have dozens of plates with cute animals and mysterious messages in Japanese (at least mysterious to this illiterate Japanese language gal).

The staff here was very nice, though.

P.S.  Maybe I was just tired?  I visited here at 4:30pm--usually I'm an AM shopper.

I first saw Daiso when I was in Puyullup, Washington in South Hill Mall.  I didn't think of it much when I passed by the store, but something caught my eye, so I decided to check it out to see what they have.  OH MY GOSH!!!! I must have spent an hour  just looking at everything and anything...I LOVE IT, love it...!! They have the cutest things for the homes, office, travel, I MEAN C'MON... for $1.50 for most of the items, can't beat that.

LOVE this place.

This is like a Japanese dollar store except not everything's a dollar. It starts at $1.50 per item and doesn't go any higher than $3 bucks. The store is huge! A lot of the items there are useless, but so damn cute. Makes you wanna buy it just to throw it away later. They have bowls and plates, pots and pans in tiny sizes, household products, toys, snacks, school supplies, stuff that you will never use... they have everything!

Funny thing is, everytime I go there, I walk outta there with 1-2 items. But I still love to go look at all the junk. The Japanese are so damn inventive. And everytime I go there, they're always playing some french music... it's a little odd. ??

Warning... there's so much junk here that you will for sure load up your house with unnecessary knick knacks.

Great place for crafts or if you're a junkie.

The land of Plastic containers, how i love thee so.  I was surprised by the amount of actually useful items in this store, much better then some of the markets in Japantown, SF.  Purchases included: lemon juicer, digital timer for cooking in the kitchen, and other items all cheap - and totally necessary.  They were a bit lacking in the food department, but who really can compare to the Tokyo Fish Market in Berekely, so rating not affected.

First place to check out if you need plastic containers for ANYTHING in your house, car, desk, bag, anywhere...they've got everything!

How the hell did I spend $40 here???  Everything is so cute and random!  It's easy to throw stuff in the shopping basket when everything is 1.50.  I ended up with some useful and not-so-useful stuff.  Like, when will ever use my miniature utensils?  Or that pretty Japanese greeting card that I don't understand?  At least it makes me happy to explore aisles filled with stuff that I am looking for.  This is a great place to kill time.  I probably spent an hour in Tupperware alone and next time, I'm hitting up beauty supplies.

I really like this place like Dollar tree.  Some stuff are very useful and prices are affordable.  Their incense oils are only $1.50 unlike BB&B their $5.99 and B&BW $7.50.  Good customer service and like the idea of bagging the things urself so I can use my reusable bags.  I won't buy my yan yans or pocky here because they are much pricey than Island Pacific or Pacific Super.

I don't really have much more to add to what everyone else has already written about the ever so popular Daiso, but I must give a mention to one product specifically that shines above all else.

You see, I wouldn't necessarily call myself a fashion guru by any means, especially when dealing with monkey suits. Even so, when it comes to this one accessory in particular, I have been known to rock the occasional higher end brand, such as Michael Kors, Perry Ellis, etc., and try to stay as stylin' and profilin' as possible. However, despite my extensive, varied collection of this item, not once have I ever received a single compliment on my selection... until now, that is.

The article of clothing in question? A three dollar skinny necktie from Daiso! That's right, ladies and germs. Not only are the designs fresh, but the material is extremely supple and flexible, unlike many other rock hard, poorly constructed variants sold at competing discount retailers. Never again will I have to visit Macy*s or Nordstrom (Rack), only to throw away thirty bones apiece, when I can get ten from Daiso for that same price, each twice as hot to boot.

You do the math. For this alone, Daiso earns my coveted five star vote of approval!

The problem here is it, it is displayed, and little of them is actually useful comparatively options of fine quality though there are a lot of options.

You often actually pay too much for addict plastic of two cents though the dollar for the price of 50 to entice you while regarding you obtains the great bargain. Be relieved, and some persons in charge of accounting in Japan often treated all the cost and benefit analysis on this out beforehand.

Welcome to Dasio. It is a house of 4dozen of the artificial plastic buckets variety in the insufficiency.

Daiso is the dollar store of the Asian community. Everything is around $1.50 and the quality of a lot of the things they sell are pretty decent. They have trendy looking tableware from cute plates and bowls in oblong shapes to a multiple array of colored chopsticks. They have cheap toys for children, cheap kitchen supplies, beauty supplies (which I would never buy from there), hardware (CUTE door stops), school supplies, etc. Don't expect to find BIC pens or the Q-Tip brand but they have substitutions. I bought 14 items (5 mugs, 3 bowls, 2 chopsticks, 2 door stops, a Hello Panda, and large tea container) and spent about $20, yes.... $20.00!

There is one in San Mateo but if that is too far for you then go to Union City. It's worth it regardless if you just moved and need to stock up your place and you're broke, or if you want to change your current home setting. It's inexpensive and the quality is good, but not the best. The employees aren't very helpful too and their English is quite broken (which is fine but the lady didn't know what a door stop was, and then directed me to the wrong area). Use your own judgement when you're buying certain things there. For example, a lot of the plastic items feel really weak. Go check it out for yourself!

I finally found the plastic chopsticks that I bought in J-town SF but then could never find again.  They have loads of other kitchen stuff--I had to restrain myself.  Put the ole' bear blinders on.

Fried tofu made in house along with a bunch of other great vegetarian things.  They have "cup o' sake", which is my drink of choice this week.

I was going to give only four claws because the cashier looked at my purchases  (a lot of booze, crackers, and half a gallon of soy sauce) with obvious disgust, but then I saw 3 cute boys in the parking lot.  Five claws up.

I'm a bear, that's why I use claws instead of stars or thumbs.

Reminds me of the 100 Yen shops when I was in Japan (although this averages $1.50 and up for most items).  Kinda fun and best bang for your buck.  You thought you've found everything at your local dollar store?  Clearly you haven't been to Daiso yet!
Clean, organized, cheap, well staffed.  Mostly Chinese young people working at this Japanese store.
TOO many things to look at!  My wife wanted to stop by "to take a look," then I was stuck there for a long time!  We brought our sis-in-law by during her visit, same result!  Plan to spend some time in this store or don't come in at all!  You'll find and get distracted by things you never knew you needed.

My first Daiso experience was at Newpark Mall. When I found out that this one was a lot bigger, my curiosity took over and I just had to check it out. It wasn't too busy considering that they only had an hour until closing. I was checking out the beauty products and this employee kept on walking in front of me and my boyfriend back and forth. These aisles are so tiny that they could barely fit more than two shoppers comfortably. I just didn't appreciate that.

As I was checking out, the cashier left all of my items inside the basket with a plastic shopping bag on top. At first I kind of glanced at her because this was the first time I ever bought anything and I didn't know if this was customary for the shoppers to bag their own items. But as I look towards the exit I already saw the lady that was behind me in line walking out of the store with her items in her shopping bag. How the hell did that happen?! Then I stare at the lady as she's helping the next customer and I can actually see her bagging her stuff. Again...WHAT THE HELL?! I honestly don't know what was up with that because I consider myself a patient and respectful customer and I don't know of one thing I did to deserve that kind of service.

In any case, I can't rate them that poorly just because it's Daiso and I get all giddy when I come inside. It's kind of like my grown up version of Sanrio.

No.  I don't like.  I know, it's cheap, clean, organized, wide range of products.  But it's all made in China.  I expected Japanese made products, but maybe it's not possible to buy anything for 1.50 from Japan anymore.

And I can't get suckered at "dollar" stores anymore.  Last 2 times I went there, I came out with nothing.

Update to my review - my dad is turning 60 and we're having a big bash to celebrate.  I wanted to get some tool favors since my dad is a big home improvement guy, but couldn't find anything worthwhile at Home Cheapot, Lowes, Target or Harbor Freight.  Came to Daiso, found a bunch of cool stuff - 4-pack screw drivers, cute flashlights, measuring tape thingamijigies with a leveler air bubble - all for 1.50 each.  I had to up my review from 1 star to 3 stars.  It was still all made in China and after my son touched the flashlights (which he absolutely adored) I made him scrub his hands before he did anything else for fear of LEAD.

When was the last time you spent 1.50 on anything other than a Cup-O-Noodle?  Or a pack of Trident?  Or a Snapple?  So now you know how I survived grad school (by the way, uncooked cup-o-noodle---YUM!)  let me school you on what $1.50 buys at Daiso:

-the best Zebra pens ever with pointy felt tip precision
-dog harnesses
-aprons
-Christmas decor
-gardening tools
-wide assortment of Japanese rice crackers and snacks
-mini Tupperware storage boxes
-hair things - headbands, rubber bands, barrettes

For slightly more than $1.50 (think in the $2-3 range)
-sushi sets
-exquisite little teapots
-ceramic glass bowls
-calligraphy sets
-plastic furniture--WHAT?  It's 3 bucks!
-Hello Kitty-like stationery if you're into that kind of thing.  Or you're 9.

Choose wisely as their return policy is "All Sales Final."

Mike the cashier here is really nice, maybe all of them are nice, but he gave me change for $2 in quarters, so that I may buy my peek-a-poohs and  Hello Kitty keychains from the machine.

I like their little food erasers and have built up quite a collection!

Oh, how I love foreign consumer products!

They have a fantastic stationary section--I picked up the most wonderful recycled paper notebook that says: "NOTESBOG: Have you ever been to Scandinavia?  There you'll see a lot of beautiful scenery and people living in lifestyles surrounded by their favorite things" on the cover.  I also purchased an "animal cocktail of colors" notebook with a farm animal print cover. They also have an amazing selection of decorative packaging and duct tape.

Other notable items:
-bamboo (or perhaps wooden) knitting needles
-no smoking/eating/cellular phone placards
-ridiculously cute chicken clothes pins
-cork-backed, stainless steel straight edges

Stick to the $1.50 items, as I found the prices to be a bit steep for the specially-priced items.

I haven't been to another location....YET, but I can imagine myself hitting up all the locations just to see if there is a difference.  It is quite addictive to come here and like everyone said it's a $1.50 store how wrong could you go?

Could it be that I am a stereotype of a Japanese woman or that I just like the cute "stuff" that is to be had?  Take your pick I don't know, but all I know is that I can't frequent this place too often or else my house will be filled with Daiso items.

This is one amazing dollar store. Or put more accuratey, $1.50 store. There's almost too much here to look at. Every 3 feet there's something new to grab your attention. The product quality varies but is most often higher than your avarage dollar store and some items are of very high quality.  There's just tons of fun stuff here to keep you busy. Notable items are the ceramics, plastic food containers, garden supplies, tools (great cheap tools) and stationary. But they have tons more stuff like toys, cosmetics, pet supplies, cleaning supplies, kitchen supplies and glassware. A great shop for browsing, gift shopping or for the crafty.

This is the best Daiso I have been to in the U.S. thus far!  Seriously!  Better than the one in Daly City, even better than the one in Mountain View-- just more selection across the board, and a very impressive knife collection (many of which are made in Japan for only $1.50-- you can get a hotcake knife, a frozen food knife, a fish scaler, a tomato knife, a children's knife-- I kid you not!).  Go here and be happy!

Thank you for being huuuuuuge. You are nearly as big as the Daly City location!
I also want to thank you for being in the same shopping plaza as Little Sheep Mongolian Hot Pot. I went for a birthday dinner and we were told our wait time was half an hour. My boyfriend was starving and he's like me, he gets CRANKY as hell.
I want to thank you for having a plethora of Japanese snacks.
Thank you for having my favorite rice crackers. Thank you for having an abundance of them, they always run out of them at the Daly City location.
Thank you for being here.

Thank you for feeding my boyfriend a bag of rice crackers so he couldn't be cranky all night.
But damn you Little Sheep for lying to me. You said half an hour, we waited an hour!

I only bought a pack of koala cookies here (for $1 !!).  Other than that, I just kinda poked around and looked at everything.  Pretty well-organized for a dollar store.  If I were still my 16 year-old self, I would've had a field day in the stationary and craft sections of the store.  The products here seem to be of pretty good quality (some are extremely amusing, like a two-pack of loofahs that are meant to be thrown into your laundry) for the price.

I like it.  Seems like all of your shopping needs are answered here -- cosmetics, kids' toys, cleaning supplies, pet supplies, arts and crafts, asian snacks, cooking utensils, and a whole assortment of things that you've always wish were invented.  And the prices are actually mostly $1.50.  I think the most expensive item I saw was a cosmetics set for $10.

Cheap and Japanese?  What's not to love...Hardware, stationery, containers, bags, toys, dishes, slippers, bakeware and most of it is $1.50.  It's like Woolworth's was in its heyday, only Japanese, so that means the merchandise skews heavily towards organization, cooking, gift wrap, and decorative items.   Daiso is the market leader of dollar stores in Japan and many of their items are made specifically for them.

I'm not that keen on their snack selection, but at these prices I really shouldn't complain.  I was very impressed with their large collection of shoe horns (just what everyone needs).  For crafters they have knitting needles, felt, pom poms and embroidery thread.

For $1.50 each I bought two trivets that also work as pot holders.  I love the Japanese fabric they're made out of.  After the cashier rang me up, he held the receipt out to me with both hands - so Japanese and a perfectly charming end to my Japanese discount store experience.  He even bagged my items, even though you normally bag them yourself.

This location is apparently the largest in the US though I feel like the Daly City one is larger.  It's also in an Asian shopping center so you there are many cheap food options around including Sheng Kee Bakery, Hong Kong Snack House inside Marina, and my personal favorite, New China (they make their own tofu).

Dollar Store + Japanese creativity/ingenuity + Sanrio= Daiso

I don't know many Asian girls who could resist leaving this place without buying something. In fact, I once saw these two wannabe Asian gangstas debating which plastic organizer would be better for the apartment. They even have an interesting hardware department.

It seems that my dream came true! When I was at Daiso in Tokyo I was thinking that I wished we had a Japanese 100 yen store where l lived. The bad part about it being near my home is that the people I bought souvenirs for might actually go to Daiso and find out how much I really spent on them on my vacation.

Now on to the review: The difference that I see between the Daiso in Tokyo and this one is that the ones in the U.S. charge $1.50 instead of JPY 100 (which is about 95 cents). There are also less interesting snacks and less drink selection. Otherwise, the products are EXACTLY the same that they sell in Japan.

I spent about 2 hours in here and spent about $20 bucks for three rice bowls, 2 pairs chopsticks, 1 bag sembei crackers, okonomi sauce, 1 large bento box, 2 onigiri molds, 1 box fake grass for obento, and a hair clip. I could have bought more just for the cuteness factor of many items but being broke and knowing that 80% of the items will probably sit in the closet until I throw them out, restrained myself. Probably be back next month though.
