I love this place.  I grew up about 15 minutes from here, and wasted my entire childhood with trips to the Dari-Ripple.    The staff is friendly.  The ice cream is delicious.  The flavors are inventive.  While the prices are comparable to other, similar stores, they are irrelevant.  I would gladly pay more than they charge.

I was introduced to the Dairyhaus by two friends yesterday and returned today, bringing along another friend.  The owner was behind the counter today, and one of her employees was there the night before.  It is obvious that she does a fantastic job selecting and training her staff.  The level of service was the same both times.  Sampling of the flavors was highly encourages on both visits.

I'd like to call out a couple of my favorite flavors from these two visits.  As stated before, Wedding Cake is to die for.  They were also offering Chai Tea ice cream, which I learned is new this year.  The ice cream perfectly captures the spices in the coffee-house favorite.  I also tried Mounds Bar (coconut and chocolate), Caramel Cappucino (rich, smooth coffee flavor with just a hint of caramel), and pistachio ("like a pistachio punch in the kisser" as my companion said).

The building is quaint and well-kept.  There are picnic tables outside for sitting.  My companion today brought her daughter who was thoroughly impressed by the child-sized table and chairs in the shop.

In summary, go there, go there, go there and go there now.  Be forewarned, though, that a trip to Dairy Queen will never suffice again.

I came back here Easter Sunday.  Yes, they were open.  Till 9PM!!

(this was the first time they decided to be open all day, but they might not do it again)

This time they had Wedding Cake ice cream.

Get.  It.

If you were the type of kid who used to lick the beaters when your mom made cake., or if you're the kind of adult who licks the beaters when you bake...

you'll thank me.

:)

It does seem pricey for the midwest but well worth every penny.

    I don't care that it's 25 degrees… Read more »

Stop by the Dairy Haus on a fine summer day and you may find owner Annie Murray behind the counter, chatting with customers and serving one of her custom blended ice cream creations. Today's was I Do, lemon ice cream with a ripple of raspberry, created in honor of her daughter's upcoming nuptials. I treated myself to the Blue Moon, a midwestern classic, though I was tempted by the French Silk. My friend opted for the Blueberry Cheesecake, and I got a quart to go.

Why is their ice cream so good? Well, you can attribute it to the fact that the Dairy Haus is a limited time, summer treat, opening in April and closing in mid-September. You could also say that the fact that it's handmade has something to do with it. Or it may have to do with the high-quality ingredients. The "hard" ice-cream is 14% butterfat, while the soft serve is 4%. The more, the better, I say! Ice cream is not for the faint of heart!

The usual suspects are available at the DH, including non-fat  and sugar-free yogurts (but who wants that?), homemade waffle cones, sundaes, shakes, and made-to-order cakes. Space inside is tight with one table, but outdoor seating is best for eating, so grab a bench or table outside. The Dairy Haus is open from 4PM to 9PM on weekdays and noon to 9PM on weekends, but stays open until 10PM when school is out. Expect a line most of the time as summer is fleeting and everyone wants a taste before it slips away.

Dear Dairyhaus,

You used to be so good with your delicious flavors, and you became so popular that all the people in Rockton talked to all the neighboring towns about you. Now you charge people over $7  for two scoops of ice cream? How can the average family afford to go here now when it costs over $30 for four people? I'm sorry Dairyhaus, but neither me nor my family can afford to spend that much on desert that is slightly above average. If you do go make sure to get the waffle cones, they're made fresh every day.
