We've been going for years and love it.
It what it is, a great ice cream place with decent but overpriced food. Yes, get hamburgers, drinks, and ice cream for three and it'll run you $30+ when it feels like it should be $20.
I guess we all kind of pay a surcharge for them being there when we want them to be - they're not open year round.
Help is great. Lobster rolls are pricey but such a treat.
Know what you're getting and you'll become a regular too. -
Review from Wendy S.
"Let's head to Dairy Joy today for lunch on the cheap, and we'll splurge for dinner." Oops. My bad. Dairy Joy is a charming, old school roadside stand where one would assume you could procure a reasonably priced lunch or a creamy treat. One would be wrong.
I'd been craving fried clams for nearly a year, and Dairy Joy even lists them on their cute little sign. We strolled up to the counter and realized that they only accept cash. Fortunately, there is an ATM front and center...from which I had to pull out $80 for our "lunch on the cheap."
We shared an order of medium fried clams, a large onion rings, a lemonade and a diet coke. Our total? SIXTY F'CKING DOLLARS! No, srsly. Sure, they're legit clams with bellies and whatnot. But SIXTY DOLLARS for a roadside stand? Heck to the no. My boyfriend, the onion ring connoisseur, was disappointed with our rings until adding copious amounts of salt. Fail. I may hit Dairy Joy again, but it will be solely for ice cream. I sense a $10 cone in my future. -

It's so great that you can drive a few miles from the Waltham office building compound and find a ice cream and clam shack. Yes it's more expensive than the ones I grew up going to in NH but everything near the city is right?
Their lobster rolls and burgers are delicious. Everyone loves the ice cream though I usually skip it because I'm not a sweet person. When the weather is nice this ones of the best places near Waltham to head with some friends from the office, and catch up over burgers, clams and ice cream in the sunshine. -

Let me make this clear to everyone who hasn't figured it out. Dairy Joy is an ice cream stand. The actual food is an after thought. The ice cream is what you want anyway.
Javaberry is legendary, and the creamsicle ain't to shabby either. But why stop at a basic cone? The rest of the ice cream menu is just as good. Except the slushies. Those lose flavor very quickly. But whatever you want ice cream.
Finally, dairy joy will never be inexpensive. Period. The gas station down the road is ridiculous too. Wanna know why? Head up kings grant road right next to dairy joy. At the first stop sign you'll find a mansion on your immediate left. There's another across the street from it. Weston is rich. Welcome to suburbia. we have ice cream. Damn good ice cream. -

Wish I had read through all the Yelp reviews before coming here. My significant other was so hungry and wanted a clam roll...this was the only nearby spot. Very disappointing. Clam roll was meh, but it was expensive! The javaberry soft serve was OK, but unremarkable to me. Compare to The Clam Shack in Kennebunkport, these clams were simply ordinary.

Review from Kevin L.
This totally reminds me of the sketchastic shack of an ice cream stand we went to while putt-putting in Manassas, VA. Except that Dairy Joy serves way more than just dairy - I witnessed some serious scarfing of all sorts of unhealthy goodies from mouthwateringly delicious-looking fries to gigantic burgers and chicken fingers.
I can only speak to the "small" javaberry cone dipped in chocolate shell that I wolfed down. It was "small" in the sense that Andre the Giant is small. I can't imagine anyone actually polishing off a medium or larger, because I spent a good fifteen minutes trying to finish the serving I was offered.
In the future, I'd recommend shying away from their famed javaberry flavor unless you have a particularly heinous sweet tooth. This was way more like ultra-sugary sorbet than the coffee-flavored decadence I was expecting.
Regardless, when in Lincoln, do as the Lincolnites do and drive your big-ass pickup truck and park your duff outside on the old-school picnic benches for the deliciously dipped dairy delights offered up by Dairy Joy. -
Review from Jamie G.
So I actually generally like soft-serve ice cream, because it is usually lower in calories, and creamy and light, and cheap. I usually go to McDonalds because it's a buck for a cone of it, and it's not bad. But when I heard about Dairy Joy, and I was already at Drumlin Farm, I thought ending my afternoon out with soft serve would be a delight. But really, I was very disappointed. It is crazy overpriced and just not very interesting. I got the "marble", which is choc/vanilla twist. Now I RARELY advocate for McDonalds, but in this case I would. Basically same product for like 1/5 of the cost. Sorry Dairy Joy, you did not bring much joy into my life, and didnt leave much in my wallet either!

Review from Bret C.
Dairy Joy is good for one thing: soft serve ice cream. The javaberry is outstanding. I'll make a stop in the future for more.
Besides that - don't waste your money. Eat somewhere else because the food is boring and the portions are small. The frappes are kind of watery. Food is 1 or 2 stars and the Javaberry soft serve is 4 or 5 stars. So we'll call it 3.
The best thing this place has going for it is its classic look and feel. It's a great place for people of any age. Tons of families always here. -

Ah, the joy of Dairy Joy.
With that said, like another reviewer, I'd like to make clear that Dairy Joy is an ice cream stand, and I love it for that. I sometimes fantasize about their orange ice cream: it is so refreshing and tasty on a hot day.
Yes, the place is a little on the expensive side, which is why I usually confine myself to the ice cream (again with the "Dairy Joy is an ice cream stand" routine). In their defense, you generally do get what you pay for in life, and the quality of the food at Dairy Joy is high. And it is located in Weston, so I assume taxes are high, and they have to be paid on the proceeds of a seasonal business.
At the end of the day, I highly recommend Dairy Joy. I believe this is the best soft serve ice cream stand I've ever been to. Sally forth and try it, especially on a hot summer evening. I'm guessing you'll be a convert. -

Dairy Joy is no joy at all. We stopped her after walking the dog, so we could try a new ice cream place. After a long day and a long walk we were looking forward to a frozen treat and from what I saw, there are none to be had at Dairy Joy.
The parking lot was packed, but the line moved quickly. I ordered a medium orange and vanilla swirl cone and my boyfriend got the infamous javaberry swirl. His came out first and looked promising...albeit a bit pale since it was a faint pink and brown swirl. Watching as they made my cone it took three tries and the guy kept dumping the previous attempts to the side. I should have taken this as a warning. After the third try I was presented with what looked like a cowpattie precariously place on top of Styrofoam cone. The guy handing me the cone said this is the best he could do since it was so soft and that it wasn't really quite a medium size.
I paid for it thinking it would sill taste good, but as I walked away and took that first lick.....YUCK! It has the consistency of cool whip and tasted like dirty lemonade. I stood there letting it melt even more and fed some to the dog before trashing the whole thing. The javaberry cone wasn't much better. While the texture was firmer, there was no flavor to the soft serve and I couldn't tell what I was eating. Needless to say I won't be giving the soft serve another try and I don't see the need to over pay at a roadside stand. -

Auburndale, MA
Dairy Joy is overpriced, uninteresting soft serve ice cream. I've been wanting to try Dairy Joy for months, and was super excited to take a ride over last night. Perhaps I built it up in my head too much, but boy was Dairy Joy a letdown.
I ordered a small creamsicle cone, which is a twist of orange sherbet and vanilla. My husband ordered a medium java berry cone. Neither flavor combo impressed me. The ice cream is not creamy. It's reminiscent of a McDonald's ice cream cone (which is ice milk) but way more expensive and not as flavorful. Flavors are not robust, and leave you wanting an actual ice cream cone when you're finished.
Dairy Joy, I am so over you. -
Review from Miriam W.
After a seriously hard day of bargain hunting at Frugal Fannie's a late lunch at Dairy Joy was absolutely crucial. We salivated over the frozen dairy options but needed sustenance and accordingly ordered clam strips (my first time trying these delicious crispy fried mollusks), burgers and sweet potato fries.
All of this we ate on a picnic bench with the summer sun overhead; nothing could have been more pleasant.
Sadly, we could consume no more after this feast and left without any dairy joy. I know, I know, sacrilege...

It should be 2.5 stars
Dairy Joy is a ice cream stand that serves up food such as burgers and fried clams as well.
In regards to the food, it is very overpriced. The fried clams are insanely expensive and medicore. The burgers are small.
The ice cream is okay with the javaberry being the standout. A very, very tasty ice cream and worth the trip.
If you are hungry, go somewhere else to eat but if you want a soft serve it is worth a shot. -

I like the IDEA of the place and when I was a kid I went to places JUST like this. Visiting now I get to relive those memories. Only now I'm pickier about the quality of food I eat.
I had a crab cake sandwich...it was tasty but WAY to oily. I'm guessing it was deep fried and not drained well.
Order of fries for the price was not very generous. It might have LOOKED more generous if they'd put them in a small container. However the container used was bigger than the order so it looked empty...or that someone had snacked on it before it made it to the pick up window. ;)
A fun outing if you are looking for soft serve ice cream but I'd keep it to ice cream.
About a 5 min drive from Walden and the nearby farms. -
Review from Kerri O.
This place gets points for being in a great location.
Dang, it gets crowded at lunch time, and after work. And, on the weekends. And, after school gets out. So, basically, there's always a line.
I don't get lunch here, mostly because its expensive. Maybe because of the location (there's not much else around), and maybe because it's in Weston, and Lord knows they can afford it.
$37 dollars for a clam plate at a take-out joint? Good God.
$8.50 for a small hamburger, small fries, and a small drink. Just basic food. Think Friendly's kid menu portions. Truly.
But, I love soft serve, and when the mood strikes, I'll wait in the long line to score some of that.Listed in: Ice Cream a lot!

Exactly what a roadside stand should be.
The greasy stuff is greasy, the semi-healthy food has flavor (love the grilled chix sandwich!) and the ice cream is mmmmmmmm. Java Berry is the best and don't worry if you don't like coffee, you will like it. Trust the yelpers! -

What is Dairy Joy's mystique? The food is average, at best. If you want soft-serve ice cream, go to any roadside ice cream stand. If you want fried clams, get yourself to a clam shack. If you want a burger, go to a good bar. It will taste a lot better and cost a lot less.
If you want the ambiance, and just like to pay a lot for a little, I've got some crap to sell you. I'll load up my car, pull over on the side of RT 117 in Weston, and meet you there. Come 'n get it! -

Ah, the Dairy Joy... home of the 37 dollar clam plate.
No, really.
To me, this is the quintessential ice cream spot. Their soft serve is the best around (JavaBerry & Creamsicle), and they're one of the only places that i know of where you can get a raspberry lime rickey (if you know of others... don't be shy). Their food is good but nothing unusual or particularly noteworthy.
The line can get rediculously long at the right times during the summer, so choose your time wisely or wait in line... either way you won't be let down. -
Review from Chris C.
Located conveniently on 117 so when I was trying to avoid some massive tractor trailer crash on 128 when coming home from Waltham this afternoon I stopped in.
So I've heard a lot of really high praise for this place and was intrigued to try it even though I'm not the biggest fan of soft serve. I have to say I didn't think it was anything special. First, off the prices were pretty high and the quality was good, but not exceptional. I will agree that they have more flavors of soft serve than I have seen before which was intriguing. I ended up going for the traditional chocolate-vanilla swirl which they call marble for some reason. I also had it dipped in the chocolate as I was feeling extra gluttonous. It was good, but to be honest I couldn't much tell the difference between it and something from DQ. So maybe I missed something or maybe this is another place that's hype out does what it can deliver. -

I have admittedly not tried much of the food here, but the place is called Dairy Joy after all. As for those of you who are craving a mediocre $5 soft serve ice cream cone, then this is the place for you.

I grew up with Dairy Joy, and I loved it as a kid. I loved it on hot summer days when the soft serve ice cream would drip down my arm and drench all my napkins. I loved the chocolate dip solidified around the vanilla.
Well, now, over fifteen years later, it's just not as good as I remember it. The setting is great--roadside ice cream, picnic tables, a nice community feel.
The ice cream is expensive, though, and... honestly, not really that great-tasting.
If you happen to be in the area and in dire need of something cold to eat, Dairy Joy may be a good pick, but you shouldn't go out of your way to get it. And if you grew up with it and haven't had it in a while, let your memories of Dairy Joy bring you a smile--avoid trying to relive the experience. You may be sorely disappointed. -
Review from Ryan B.
Wait for a sultry hot summer evening when the last thing you want is to cook inside to experience this unique establishment. Get in your car and head to this shanty located in the ultra wealthy town of Weston Ma and get ready for pricey yet tasty experience. The Dairy Joy owners are NOT allowed (by town ordnance) to improve anything on the outside. This is a true seasonal place with your typical New England summer items. Hamburgers, Hot Dogs, fried clams, lobster rolls chicken fingers, fries etc. Over the past few years Dairy Joy has added "healthier" items to the menu such as grilled chicken sandwiches and salads. All of which are great items.
Some things to consider about Dairy Joy. This place is not inexpensive. They have a Lobster Role platter which comes in at $17.95. Very tasty but not a "Cheap" eat by any means. But even with these high prices it is still a awesome place to go. Like other Yelpers I agree the Javaberry is a perfect combination of coffee ice cream and black raspberry. YUMMMMM Also keep in mind that this place only has out door seating.
Hamburgers and ice cream always taste better from a picnic bench!Listed in: Warm Summer Nights

They have soft serve, fried clams and lobster roll too.
Lots of clean seating, umbrellas and parking.
strange to say, but un-oily deep fried offerings
Quite good, but very pricey.
$64 for lunch for two who did not even have any ice cream
and yet no public restroom! -

Just wanted to let people know that the famous sherbert soft serves have been replaced. You know, the raspberry and orange flavors. I always get the Java Berry and when I was handed the cone the raspberry was shockingly pink. I'm definitely didn't like it as much as I liked the old one and it had a weird texture. I can't imagine why they would change it unless it was a money thing. So I'm guessing cheaper (and the price of the cone certainly wasn't).

They don't have rainbow sprinkles! (or any sprinkles).

New York, NY
As one can readily see here, a large percentage of the market base of this spot are west-of-Boston locals driven by nostalgia, combined with the fact the residential suburb it sits in isn't exactly a culinary hot spot (when the most popular eats in an affluent town are at a chain bagel store, that tells you something).
On the positive side, DJ is consistent, not having really changed much (other than some embellishment to the outside seating area, e.g. more seating and an actual attempt at some landscaping) over the last forty years. Yes, I too came here as a child -- but as you'll see below subsequently tasted enough other wares to now know better.
For the cold reality is that nothing here -- really, absoutely nothing -- is a particularly noteworthy or stellar example of warm weather New England roadside cuisine.
The soft serve offerings at DJ are paltry and uninspiring compared to what you can get at Pat's in South Hadley or the nearby Chilly Cow in Arlington.
And please, don't even get me started on the seafood: the fresh clams at the Clam Box in Ipswich (cooked in oil that is continuously changed) blow away the greasy frozen ones from DJ. Want a lobster roll at a premium price? Take a day trip up to Wiscasset and get in line at Red's Eats. The wait for their world-renowned version is worth every second -- particularly when appreciating the fact their lobster roll costs $3 LESS than the rather meager, generic (and grossly overpriced) DJ version. -

I really wanted to like Dairy Joy, as the concept is great....A little roadside shack in the middle of a very affluent residential town with no other food options. I've been there at least six times, and it's just OK.
The food & ice cream is waaaaaay overpriced, but I guess it works since they're located in Weston. Now I don't mind high prices if you get what you pay for. I'm a sucker for fried seafood, and I always order the Fisherman's platter.
The half-plate is something like $23, and the scallops are tiny, the clams are strips, and it's really overgreasy. I can only eat about 1/3 of it before I get that, "too much grease" feeling.
It's always jam-packed with huge lines when the weather turns nice. It's nice to go there for the nostalgic sentiment, but be prepared to be underwhelmed with the food quality and pay huge prices. -

Ah Dairy Joy, such a large part of my childhood. Almost every summer night I would beg my parents to take me here. If I won (not very often) I would get the marble twist (as large of a size as my mom would let me get, usually a small) dipped in chocolate. Man was that heaven - mom would get pissed as the ice cream would melt all over me - but who cares I was 7 and had ice cream!
Now older and wiser I realize, while Dairy Joy is a nice little place for ice cream, it is still just soft serve. I enjoy it once and awhile and who doesn't like chocolate dipped ice cream? But in the end if I'm going to get ice cream I might as well go to a place that makes it homemade and has more than 10 different flavors.
As for the food, its your basic overpriced, summer fried clams, burger, fries place. I guess its ok, but I wouldn't bother spending the money here. If you want to go out for dinner, drive down the road to Waltham and pick a restaurant there, then come to Dairy Joy afterward.
3 Stars for solid soft serve and great memories! -

Good God I love this place - even if I need to take out a small loan to get lunch and an ice cream. This reviewed is slightly biased because this place also has sentimental value; I've been coming here my whole life. The fish and chips are very good and the onion rings are amazing with a nice light coating. It's one of the only places I eat every last bite. The meal is complete with a medium javaberry in a cone (that is significantly smaller than in years past, yet more expensive....interesting - minus one star for that).
Also - be prepared to wait in the summer, the lines stretch to road. -

The classic monopoly. Nothing else nearby for ice cream or outdoor dining so they plain and simple rip you off. But the people come and pay- even those without Mercedes and Beemers, so they get away with it. The other day I ordered the hamburger special for $7.60 which turned out to be over $9 because I asked for lettuce and tomato. The fries are the greasy frozen version, not even at the McDonald's level, and the soda is the smallest allowed by law. The hamburger, however really isn't too bad and the roll is very good. I would order the roll and bring my own hamburger next time. The mediocre Lime Ricky at $4.25 is also ridiculoulsy overpriced.
Look at the prices for the fried clams and prepare to take out a second mortgage on your house. Go to Essex or Ipswich.
Take the dog and the kids to Dairy Joy for soft serve (better than Dairy Queen) and you'll pay more but can't go wrong. Forget the food. -

Well, I really wanted to go to Rockport today, but that just wasn't in the cards . . . so I decided to check out Dairy Joy, which is just a few miles from where I work. It sounded a lot like this place Amelia's in Gloucester, which I used to love (soft serve flavors aplenty). Past yelpers chatted up the grilled chicken sandwich and the javaberry ice cream, so I decided to give those a try. I just couldn't stomach a fried meal today--neither the cost nor the grease.
Hmm.
It was decidedly ho-hum. I guess I was expecting some sort of transcendental roadside food shack experience. The sandwich wasn't bad. Just a bit boring and overpriced. I was prepared for the overpriced part. And my soft-serve didn't suck. But it was weird. The java part was creamy and smooth and the berry part was icy. Of course I ate it, but for my once a week ice cream fix, it wasn't quite worth it. Mix the vanilla with the coffee and now we're talking . . . but I don't think I'll be high-tailin' it back here any time soon.
(Note: If the chicken sandwich was a little tastier--and not $8.15--I might have given them 4 stars. Or if I'd been willing to shell out for the shellfish--which I wasn't.) -

I went there today for my annual Javaberry come after swimming at Walden Pond. I was sorely disappointed. It tasted wrong - the coffee ice cream was completely different-tasting than in years past. My sister's marble twist didn't taste good either. I saw another customer's orange sherbet and it was a garish dark orange. Sadly, I conclude that in order to profit even more, they changed their ice cream to a very low-quality, cheap product. My 20-plus year standby is gone Et tu, Dairy Joy? Et tu?

I've always been pretty unimpressed by this place. I give it high points for nostalgia-inducing qualities and hyper-cuteness, but the prices are high and the food is average at best. I was expecting good things from a burger served on the side of the road (although in retrospect, who knows why), and what I got instead was a burger that tasted a whole lot like it was served at a concession stand underneath the bleachers of a Division II football team's stadium. Fine when you are at a football game, but not when you have multiple choices of places to get burgers.
Maybe I am being too harsh. It should be known that after years of working in Ice Cream joints, I don't really touch the stuff (you try having it caked to your arms and your dogs looking at you like you turned into a giant fudgsicle!), so maybe I am missing the point of DAIRY Joy.
I wanted it to be awesome, and instead it was average. -

Well, I finally got the family to Dairy Joy this weekend. We went on a Sunday afternoon, right at noon and it wasn't too crowded! We got a table without any waiting around!
My husband and I both got clam rolls, which were really tasty, albeit a bit small for the price. The kids got a cheeseburger (good bargain for $4.25) and the chicken tenders which were quite tasty!
So yes, it's a little pricey for a clam shack, but we found the food to be really good!
My husband got a chocolate malt shake which was good and both kids got the chocolate ice cream which they LOVED. I got the Javaberry and found it to be a little icey and next time I go, I think I'll try a different flavor, wasn't diggin the berry part of it.
Love the atmosphere of the place, casual. Bad part was no bathrooms! Because when your three year old has to go, he has to GO! -

I don't mind paying a little extra for something delicious. However, the mark-up is insane for the food. I feel a little like I'm at the fair or some other outdoor excursion buying $8 funnel cake.
First, the good. The fried clams were awesome. I thought they were very tasty. They were crisp on the outside, and just sensational with big tender pieces of clamness on the inside. The fish part of the fish-n-chips was also very moist on the inside and crunchy on the outside. But nothing close to those clams.
The mediocre. Basically everything else. I didn't particularly like the lime rickey. It tasted more like corn syrup, diluted with club soda, and 2 sad slivers of lime inside. I couldn't really any lime-y-ness. The french fries were okay. The onion rings were not salted, and tasted very bland.
I liked the soft-serve, however, seen as I can't really tell the difference between that and a MickeyD's soft-serve, I probably won't ever come back. Unless I'm really craving those clams. Awesome clams. Yum.
Extra star for the clams. -

I'm a little bit biased because I worked here several summers ago. I was the highest paid ice cream server in history. I was hired to be a manager, but the original guy ended up staying, and they didnt want to fire me. So I got paid to be a manager, but to do grunt work. But their ice cream was good. It's all soft serve, nothin fancy. No sprinkles. Wicked overpriced. It was like $3 for a small cone 5 years ago, so I can only imagine what it is now. I guess they have to make up for the high labor costs. Everyone was really friendly. There were a lot of regular customers, we knew them by name.
The downs: the price. No public bathroom. Long lines. Working long days without a break.
I made some good money that summer, but damn, I worked my butt off!
