I've lived in many cities with local papers so I feel pretty darn qualified to say that the DH kicks ass in terms of suburban coverage, design and delivery. Chris D is right about the paper being dropped literally at the front door. No longer do I have to don on a robe and look all around the 'hood before I dash out to my driveway for my daily read.
The design of the paper kicks the old dame Tribune's ass. You would think for such an established paper as the Trib, they would jazz up their entertainment design a few notches. The DH tries hard and it shows. I know cuz I used to be a newspaper designer.
I don't expect the DH to be the authority on world news nor national news, but that's not its motive. It aims to alert suburbanites of suburb goings-on and it succeeds. The Time Out section is easy to surf for such a happening place like Chicago.
Also, don't you love the newsprint? It feels clean and doesn't smudge your fingers.
I'd be remissed to not mention the DH's web site www.dailyherald.com. I understand there's been a change in mgmt, and they are working their butts off to make the site engaging. I can't wait.

The Herald is a small step down in terms of what it offers compared to the Tribune. However, the Sun Times is such a joke nowadays that the Herald is a much better option. The Herald does a great job of covering the Northwest and Western suburbs. Reporters I've worked with from there through my job have usually been very professional and done a good job of getting the story right with one exception. Unfortunately, some young reporters believe the way to get ahead is to write hatchet stories, but this is not the case at the Herald.
Overall I'd say the Daily Herald does a nice job of positioning itself as a suburban-focused newspaper, giving a small-town feel, but also managed to cover Chicago, the nation, and the world well enough to be very well-rounded.

The writing is okay, but the editing is horrible. Can't count the number of times a story is supposed to jump to another page, but instead disappears, headlines don't make sense, or there are typos or grammar errors. Are there any copy editors at this place? I keep getting it because a dear friend works here and the delivery is truly to my front door.
The Daily Herald is really a juggernaut in DuPage County. There seems to be a stronger emphasis on northern DuPage and northern Kane counties, so to me, their reporting doesn't do much for me. I want news about my area (southern DuPage/Kane counties), so I read the Beacon News for that. For more general metro news, I listen to local radio (WDCB) and the Chicago Tribune and Sun Times. Still, I appreciate the emphasis on suburban events and news.

I rea the daily herald every morning and get the latest and most up-to-date news. I really enjoy the articles. I think the writers are great! I would surely recommend this company to get your papers from!
