I guess I wasn't around for the good ole days at the Grind that everyone talks about. I've been going there for 4-5 years off and on because, like it or not, it's open later than most places. (10 pm on weeknights). But at 9:30, or sometimes even 9:15, they start herding you towards the door. First they close the "upstairs," then they start putting up chairs and making announcements.
The times I've tried it during the day I've had to wait way too long for service, and the food is overpriced. (although they did get rid of that glass case that always had flies buzzing around in it, for which I am grateful.)
I've heard that Daily Grind is a chain out of Virgina. I've seen a few around town but they haven't done too well. There's one opening in Canton "soon"--maybe that's the right place for them.

I don't drink coffee, but they have great tea drinks and a nice staff. When I dropped a full drink at the counter they calmed my nerves and made me another with a smile. That's always comforting early in the morning.

Great place to grab some coffee on the way to work or if you just want to sit down with a cup and read the paper. A fun people watching place too! The coffee is from local Key Coffee (or did Key change names?)...anyway it's good. A good assortment of lite breakfast fair: bagels, muffins, etc. I've heard the lunch sandwiches are good too. Can get very busy on weekday mornings with people coming/going to work, so plan accordingly if you have a meeting to make!
THe tea is good and hot, but then again how do you screw that up? THe coffee is well I don't really like coffe so much.....the Danish(s) are really good......idk...I like it cause it's right there in the heart of Fells and you can sit outside and enjoy a nice day...Great for people watching. other than that the place is kinda whatever...
I have to say that I loved the Daily Grind (Fells Point) "back in the day" much better than I do now. Many of the cool people are still working there, but it's starting to acquire a trendy feel to it. I miss the days when you could smoke in the back room...when locals hung out, (inside and outside) drank coffee, read, played chess, etc. It's still a good place to get a bagel, but I don't spend any time hanging out there anymore. Quality of the food is very good.
