So the only reason I found out about this place was because a menu was stuck in my bill at Lola and bakeries are my weaknesses!

Of course it being so close to Lola I had to hop across the street after lunch to check it out. This place has its own cafe so to speak but the bakery portion of it is extremely tiny! You will be hard pressed to fit maybe five people in there at once. They also serve some of their hot food in this section to go.

With such a small space, you would be surprised at how much goodness is packed on the tiny shelves of barely any length. They have these amazing "Cupcakes" that are topped with a sweet pumpkin butter cream which are actually CORN BREAD underneath but in cupcake format so it is dense but moist and so delicious. I think my mouth was having a corn bread orgasmic experience! I don't know that I've ever had breads / baked goods that tasted so good with such authentic oomf! Mmmm definitely worth a visit.

"Can seagulls eat chocolate pudding?" I texted a friend

As I enjoyed my cup of Gianduja Budino (with hazelnuts) while sitting on a bench near Eliott Bay, an inquisitive seagull curious to know what I was enjoying made thoughtful eye contact with me. Even though they are known as rats with wings, I was pretty sure I had read once that dogs and birds shouldn't be fed chocolate.

The seagull cleared its throat softly, as if to say: ahem, please fulfill your civic responsibilities. Don't you see that I am cute, and so you need to fawn all over me?

I smiled and searched inside my doggy bag to find something for it. My fingers came across the peanut butter cookie, which reminded me of the Nutter Butter at Bouchon Bakery, except that this was not crispy and was much smaller. I offered a small piece to the seagull which tilted its head and observed it intently for a second, before getting to work on it. Soon, it was gone and the seagull stared again in my direction, nodding slightly: Gimme more cookie! So, there we were: man and sea gull enjoying the creations of Dahlia bakery, staring ahead at the wide expanse of water on a pleasant late summer afternoon. Once I was done with the Budino, and the seagull did its best to guilt me into giving it some, I moved on to the chocolate butter pecan cookie, which had the right texture of being crisp and chewy at the same time.

Dahlia Bakery is arguably the best bakery in Seattle. And, I was fortunate to try almost all the noteworthy ones in a recent trip. While I walked in to sample the "Best Coconut Cream Pie in the World", an aversion to too much whipped cream ensured that I did not agree with the majority vote.

Much like someone who goes to a convenience store for beer and buys a winning lottery ticket, I lucked out by getting the Rumball chocolate tart with milk chocolate ganache. This, I was told, has been recently introduced at Dahlia, and would have to be their standout pastry (even more so than the awesome donuts!), with the interplay of chocolate and orange.

Chocolate does appear to be Dahlia's strength for they also have a standout cookie: the chocolate truffle cookie, which would match somewhat similar best-in-class versions at Petrossian, Baked and Jacques Torres in NYC.

However, what annoyed me about Dahlia was the inability to try out their croissants, which have been rated by many magazines and travel guides as the best in Seattle. I had woken up early morning just to get some, but was told by the server that someone had bought all of them. At 8 am? Damn you, mysterious early bird who got (I hope) the worm... curses!

Or, maybe it was just Karma paying me back for denying the seagull the chocolate pudding she had her heart set on. As they say: Karma's a bitch - so, she's likely upset that she's been cheated out of any chocolate ;-)

Creme brulee is my new thing, and I have been stalking the creme brulee cart guy around san francisco. so when I was in seattle visiting one of my besties gina at her furniture shop . I had to go get some creme brulee.. So when we were thinking on where to go, I also had this really big craving for their donuts, and said let's go to dahlia bakery.. I haven't been to dahlia bakery in forever!!! So we had to go.. ASAP!! so we drove down to dahlia bakery and looked around before we ordered our donuts.. But little did we know that the creme brulee at the window  stole the show of any desire for those little donut holes.... and I was too impatient to wait for them to fry them so I chose the creme brulee instead.. and it was magnific!!! they torch it on the spot :) yeah for me!!!

As for the donuts.. well let's just say I had dinner at lola and had to order the donuts for dessert! I must admit fresh baked anything is the best!!!! and the donuts were delightful.. too bad I need to go on a starvation diet for my tummy and my wallet.. eeekkkk

Let me start off by saying that the donuts here are absolutely insane.  It goes like this:

Donut (holes):  light, fluffy, no trace of grease, made to order
+
Whipped mascarpone:  can eat this by the pintful
+
Blueberry compote:  I was drinking it

= ridiculousness

We had it for breakfast and then came back 5 hours later and ordered a second batch for dessert.

And don't forget to grab some chocolate truffle cookies on the way out...you will not regret it.

Notable mentions:  coconut cream pie which was pretty effing good too and a few others things that were also good.... point being this is a top notch eatery.  Who said the carb industry is dead?  Not these guys.

If I'm going to support any Tom Douglas joint, this will be it. After being seriously let down at Serious Pie, I headed here to try the donuts.

Sold out :(

We settled for two pieces of foccacia bread (since our meal at Serious Pie hardly filled us up...I'm starting to think that's not on purpose) and two cupcakes, whose flavors I can't remember. One was crazy chocolately and one was buttermilky. Regardless, they were delicious and I would definitely return. Hopefully the donuts won't be sold out but hey, I'll settle for some cookies, macaroons, or pie. Maybe a giant loaf of olive ciabatta bread? The sandwiches sounded great also, and very reasonably priced. Ugh, should have just ate lunch here. I hate you, Serious Pie!!

The Best bread in Seattle!!!

So good on my last day there I went and bought a loaf of wheat sourdough bread.

The bakery is small but has awesome service and delicious bread. Dahlia's also has a spread of cakes, muffins, cookies and cakes.

The best part is that it is super cheap.

Verdict: I will return next time I'm in Seattle.

There are many reasons I heart the Dahlia Bakery, but here are my top five:
1. Triple coconut cream pie.
2. Chocolate truffle cookies.
3. Oatmeal apricot cookies.
4. Russian tea cake.
5. House made ice cream sandwiches made to order.

Cupcakes, fruit tarts, assorted cookies, morning pastries (muffins, brioche, banana bread, monkey bread, scones, croissants), and rustic breads (including kalamata olive ciabatta, onion rye, and whole wheat pecan flax seed). The morning pastries which are normally $2+ go down to $1.25 after 1PM.

Breakfast consisting of egg, meat, and veggie sandwiches, famous amazingly yummy Dahlia donuts, and granola and yogurt cups. They have lunch that has daily specials, soup, salads, and sandwiches.

Layer cakes to order with flavors like fudge chocolate, carrot cake, and buttermilk and ginger spice cake. For fillings, you can get caramelized bananas, mascarpone, brown butter cream cheese (yes, please!), coconut pastry cream, and more!

They also sell house made pita (it's deliciously fresh, light, and fluffy!), their spreads: hummus, tzatziki, red pepper, garlic skordalia, kalamata fig (my all-time favorite), AND Tom Douglas' "Rub with Love" brand of spices and sauces. I love the ginger pineapple teriyaki sauce. It's am amazing marinade for salmon or chicken. MMmMm!

It's tiny and can get super crowded, but it's definitely a must-visit in Seattle :)

shocker... another 4 stars for TD.

Went here this morning...  wasn't busy at all so I got to browse around a little bit.

ended up with a scone, some monkey bread, yogurt and a couple cookies.

I've only nibbled on the cookie and had the yogurt for breakfast, but they are both good so far.

Dahlia Bakery is a small, but very good bakery in downtown Seattle. It is of course next to Dahlia Lounge on 4th Avenue. And when I mean small, it is pretty petite. To walk in, you need to open the screen and front door. Hopefully, there is no one standing behind the door otherwise you might bang them. It is the kind of place where you are afraid to walk around in for fear of breaking something.

I would say Dahlia probably ranks as my second favorite bakery in Seattle behind Macrina. I really like their muffins and scones which are moist and tasty. The breads here are excellent though pricey. Many of the items here are, but that is due to its quality. The one thing I have not tried but want to is the coconut cream pie that I hear so much about. I always seem to forget about this. I should try to get this specialty next time, especially since they offer it by the slice and bite.

For the quality of the bake goods here and central location, I would recommend Dahlia for a sweet treat in Downtown Seattle.

Sweet baby Jesus....their donuts are the best donuts I've ever had..no lie. My friend saw them featured on the Food Network Channel...and I love/hate her for introducing me to them. They are airy, pillowy donut holes rolled in cinnamon and sugar...so warm and fresh...but the best part is is that they give you a side of home-made apricot jam and some mascarpone...its the best combination.
I also had their cherry salad...and it was really small and not that great...but the little baguette they give you with your salad is fresh and yummy too. The sandwich that the lady next to us was eating though looked pretty damn good....maybe next time.

My loverman and I came here while we were waiting to be seated at Serious Pie. It reminded me a lot of Tartine Bakery in SF but way cheaper and not as good.

There were a lot of things that sounded amazing but weren't available anymore. I ended up getting the Summer Eclair while he got the Savory Brioche. I was surprised at how cheap everything was. The Summer Eclair was pretty good. I didn't try the Savory Brioche because there was meat on it but he said he loved the cheese part, unfortunately right after he said that, the rest of the cheese fell to the ground. Haha. We were also lucky enough to find seats outside of the bakery.

I hated how small it was inside and whoever decided to make their inner door open towards the store is an idiot.

We had to sneak in here because I had to introduce my friend to the coconut cream pie.  A mongo slice of that and a pnut butter cookie brought oooo's and ahhh's.

We sat outside at the table and people watched.  You know people are enjoying their food when it gets all quiet.  It's like when it snows.  Things are moving around you but you can't hear anything.  It's one of the best sounds around.

The chocolate truffle cookie, soooooo delicious. Oh and so is the Pecan cream one.

my husband was in seattle for a week on business so i came to spend the weekend with him. i found out about this place on yelp and i'm so glad. we walked quite a bit to get to this place for breakfast (started near pioneer square) but it was worth it!
the English muffin with walnut butter and banana was totally strange and totally delicious (and almost naughty) - i could only eat one bite of my husband's since i already had an egg bacon sandwich which was good but nothing like that!
we also got a bite size of the coconut cream pie since i heard so much about it and it did not disappoint.
very satisfying! would come back if i'm ever back in seattle!

I went to Lola for brunch one day and was blown away. I had to try Tom Douglas's Dahlia Bakery across the street. It's just as amazing. we ended up getting tomato soup, Hawaiian pork with pineapple, choc. pudding, a cookie, a whole loaf of banana bread, a strawberry ice cream sandwich and a bag of Beignets. Oh sooo good

This is my new favorite spot for Beignets in the city.  (p.s.  they serve them over in Lola too)

BITE OF HEAVEN. that's what my friend and i call the coconut cream pie bite. it's so good. i've had the real slice of the pie in Dahlia Lounge, and i dont think it's as good. the bite is seriously... HEAVEN.

other than that, it's ok. i've heard that they have really good donuts? bagel? one with a hole i think. i've never tried it though, so i cant say much about it. I have however, tried the chocolate chip cookie and it was disgusting. too sweet, i took one bite and i couldnt have more.

why the four star? you ask? well, that's how AMAZING the bite of heaven is, er i mean coconut cream pie bite :P

Cupcake Review = fail = no cupcakes, "come back around 11, we were too busy this morning."

hmmm... I wasn't too busy after breakfast at Lola to consider spending more $ in Douglasland... sorry... it just didn't seem right to have the tags out on the empty cupcake tower.

The cookies looked amazing and the muffins were unusual and well composed so we tried a sampling before continuing down the street to Yellow Leaf.

Chocolate Chip Cookie - crisp with large chunks of chocolate

Chocolate Cookie - brownie on the inside with a crisp thin crust on the outside

Savory Brioche - Light airy bread portion with sweet figs, creamy chevre crumbles and thin strips of crispy bacon. Something had spice on it... both hubby and I had lightly burning lips, but we couldn't place a taste or an ingredient... it didn't distract... it did seem strange.

Caramel Monkey Bread - Small segments of light sweet bread dough coated in cinnamon melded together and topped with cinnamon sugar crisp topping. The caramel sauce was the highlight of everything!!! They should bottle it... couldn't have been more creamy and complex!

The food we tasted was 5 star... the service and availability on a holiday morning with the sidewalks and streets empty 0 stars.

"You are just positively giddy!" said the young lady behind the counter.

I had just walked in - and feasted my eyes on the most glorious dessert selection I've ever seen. The triple coconut creme pie, the fancy cupcakes, the wall of cookies, and, best of all - the S'mores pie with the graham cracker crust. Oh, so decadent and dreamy. Who wouldn't be positively giddy?

I wanted to buy one of everything. Oh, and it was hard not to. But I'm a gal watching her waistline and her wallet, so I had to stop somewhere. I only ordered four. And oh, they were so good. Especially the S'mores concoction. I still dream about it.

When I studied literary criticism, we often talked about the "form" being the most excellent version of anything that could exist; so good that it was the best chair God could imagine or the best kiss He could imagine. These pastries - they were the form of pastries.

And as such, they were oh, so worth their collective impact on both of my "bottom lines."

My sweetheart and I stayed right across the street from the Dahlia Bakery during our recent holiday in Seattle. Why it took us several days to pop in, I'll never know, but I want those days back so we can go every single morning. I think we ate here more than anywhere else during our stay, and everything was quite tasty. My sweetheart says the English muffin with egg and asparagus sandwiches were possibly the best culinary discovery of the whole trip! The English muffin with walnut butter and banana sandwiches aren't too shabby either. Actually, at this moment, I am kicking myself for not seeing if we could just buy a bag of their tasty, tasty English muffins to take home.

The charming staff was also very nice to me when I spilled most of my morning coffee down my jacket, which is perhaps even better than any of their delicious baked goods.

The coconut cream pie is one of the most delicious desserts I have tasted in my entire life. It ranks in the top 3 of all-time. Even if it would never occur to you to order such a dish-- I myself tend to order chocolate desserts in general -- order a bite of it, take your extra statin dose, and be ready to have chest pain. It is that good.

Chocolate truffle cookie FTW.  I swear to god, this cookie is one of the most amazing ones I've ever had in my life.

It's tiny and there are no tables, but it's a really cute space and I don't need a table to eat a cookie anyway.  The line gets long, but the employees move everyone through pretty fast.

While I found the coconut cream pie overrated on a previous visit, I will be back for that damn cookie.  It's too good to pass up.

I was in Seattle a few years ago for work and had heard about the infamous coconut cream pie so I had to give it a try.  Thank God I did!!!  Since I went to the bakery, I bought an entire pie that fit oh so nicely into my arms (the perfect size for a decadent dessert).  I actually was able to take it on the plane ride home to NJ to share with my family and they wanted to make a special trip out to Seattle for it!  Should I ever head out west again, I will definitely go back here!

Oh! I stand corrected, we did have something made from a Tom Douglas restaurant... sort of!

This bakery was located across the street from our hotel, when I saw a bakery sign, I KNEW I had to come by. I could read the sign from across the street showing what they had and I knew I had to come try the coconut cream pie. The first day we walked in to see what they had, but it was so early and I can't eat pie first thing in the morning so we grabbed doughnuts a few blocks away instead at Top Pot. The next day, Kym C. ran down across the street and brought us back a few goodies. I only wanted a bite size coconut cream pie and it was a good bite! It was filled with shredded coconut and the crust was homemade and flaky. If you have been to Tartine in SF, it is equivalent to their pies (which means they are good).

This store is pretty small but there is so much to offer here. A great little place!

Tom Douglas~ def. a seattle icon in the culinary realm. Gotta try out his small bakery shack. Especially the signature mini coconut cream pie. I don't die for this place...but if i'm in the area, sure why not!

It's not a place to sit down and banter with friends over coffee. It's a walk in and walk out with some tasty sweets...as you briskly walk back to work in downtown seattle during your lunch break. (satisfied from getting your afternoon sugar fix). OR if you are planning on taking a stroll downtown- looking at shops and eating/walking happily. (preferably on a sunny day)

Apricot oatmeal cookie & peppermint patties were my faves. There isn't a large selection- so pick up your #1s and #2s and know it will be there when you go back.

Perfectly cooked and seasoned egg, perfectly toasted English muffin, perfectly sharp cheddar cheese and perfectly ripe avocado.  Delicious!!  A $5 egg sandwich is a little pricey, if you ask me, but it was seriously worth every last penny!

Coconut cream pie.  That's all I've had from here.  Once three years ago, and again just recently.  And I can honestly say I ate at least half maybe 2/3 over the course of a few days.  This time and last time.

I'd have to say that the coconut cream pie is indeed pretty delicious.  Is it the best evar?  nah.  but it is well done, and cause enough for me to eat enough to get sick of it.  this is good praise from me.

when I stopped in this time, I peeked at some of the other items, which looked ok, but seemed to be a little pricey.

Have any of these reviewers been to an actual bakery?

Reasons for suckage:
(1) Tiny, no tables, no selection.
(2) Overpriced -- a mid-sized apple pastry was almost $6.  Unless it's going to give me a backrub and splurt forth a cup of coffee post-purchase, no thanks.
(3) Chocolate chunk cookie was rock hard and tasted not unlike a Chips Ahoy.
(4) Bread was no different than a loaf you'd pick up at your local QFC.

Bottom line:  not worth the journey to douche-town.

Since moving to B-town, I've made it my mission to try all the little places I'd walked (err, stumbled) by previously but never went into.  First stop, Dahlia Bakery, yesterday after work.

It IS a tiny space, perfect for grabbing-and-going.  Not so great if there were lines (during lunch rush!), but at 5:30pm it was empty save for a charming old Italian lady (speaking Italian with the counter girl!).

True story, I almost ordered the apparently famous coconut cream pie...but I went with a chocolate eclair and a large loaf of potato bread, for less than $10.

The real value here was the bread -- it was fantastic later that night, with olive oil and vinegar, and I managed not to chow the whole thing in one sitting.  :)  The eclair, dear lord...dessert heaven!  Perfectly sweet chocolate top, yummy vanilla bean filling, chewy pastry.

I'll definitely be stopping in here to try more desserts and breads.  Now if I could just save up enough dough to dine at Dahlia Lounge, I'd be all set in T. Douglas-land.

The little coconut cream mmmm...pie.

Yes, you can get other things here including salad. Salad! What?! Soup!? What?

If you are having lunch, conserve your calories and eat pie.

It's the American way.

Lovely. That's the word that pops into my head. I mean the place is teeny, there are only a few tables outside, and it's on a random street.. but lunch here was lovely. It was just the right amount of busy the entire time I was there (as in.. the line was to the door.. but never went out the door and seats freed up as people got their food). Eying all the goodies while in line threw me off. Must.. have.. sandwich.. before.. desserts..

This place may look like a hole in the wall joint, but you'd never guess that just based on the food. I wanted to get the buffalo chicken salad sandwich but the threat of Frank's Red Hot in the mix scared my hot fearing palate. My friend, however, had it for lunch and said it was fantastic. I've gotta say I was very happy with my choice of eggplant parm for a sammie. The bread was absolutely fantastic and the eggplant came out perfectly. I've never had such a "light" parm sandwich.

Now onto dessert.. I grabbed a mini coconut cream pie (how could I not) and a chocolate truffle cookie. The cashier put my cream pie in a cute little box.. and I let her. I wanted to say, "Figgit the bahx.. I'll jus have it as an appetizer kthx" but you know.. I was trying to give Seattle a good first impression of me.. so I pretended it was a treat for later. Both were wondderrffullll. The coconut cream pie was a wee bit expensive considering the size but the cookie. Oh the cookie was just a great amount of chocolate without being too rich.

Throw in an Izze in a can (except tap the lid before opening) and that was one amazing bakery lunch!

Yummy bread! I love how their crust is hard but inside is all fluffy and so damn good! When I go to Tom Douglas' restaurant, I can just keep eating their bread and be full. They are so good.

When I get to go there in the morning, I always order donuts. hmmmm...donuts....!! The jam, and sweetened mascarpone are just heavenly. I didn't care so much for their eclair, and for me, their coconuts cream pie is yummy but not as good as their donuts. Their breakfast sandwich is also good! I regret why didn't I go there this morning...

Excellent eats.  I love the sandwiches!

Who else regularly serves a lamb sandwich?!  I dunno!

Everyone's friendly that works here, just kind of know what you want - people seem to come in clusters to the small place.

It's a good thing I'm usually too lazy to walk that far, and driving to it seems so sinful... as if a trip to Dahlia Bakery isn't sinful enough as it is, but I'd gladly go to confession over and over again for such gluttony.

Nothing cheers me up quite like the sweet bakery aroma early in the morning. If I weren't always in such a hurry to get my hands around the best looking broiche cinnamon roll from the tray, I'd exit and re-enter the shop multiple times just to experience that first whiff over and over again. And those macaroons... just thinking about them makes me giddy. Yes, I most certainly have had macaroons for breakfast!

This is strictly a to-go place. The beverage menu is limited, but I don't come here for fancy coffee drinks. Such perfect baked goodness would be insulted by anything other than a cup of tea anyway.
