How awesome is it that this market is open all year?! There's so many delicious and local baked goods and dairy products here, your mouth will water. It's definitely not as large as the Union Square greenmarket, but it's still awesome.
I only wish it was held during a more convenient time (only Wednesday mornings). -

If I were a vegetable, I'd be an Eggplant.
A perfectly bright purple oval shaped, flecked with stripes of white with slight imperfections. With a shiny exterior, thick skin, and sumptuous moist white inside embedded with tiny seeds.
I've been here every week for the past 3 weeks. Stock piling to refill my dead windowsill herb garden with newborn babies. Stock piling on shallots & onions for the necessary every day pantry needs. Overall stock piling before the summer is over and I can no longer get the sweet organic fruits of labor during these warm months.
I always go prepared with a list of necessities. My favorite stand would be the 3rd tent. I don't recall the name of the farm, but they have a giant cooler full of ziplock bagged zucchini blossoms. A small bag with about 12 blossoms is $3 and the large is $6 (more than 24 blossoms, I stopped counting). The 5th stand has fresh chick peas which I haven't tried yet, but am thinking of getting to make a fresh summer salad.
This farmers market has more than the usual that I've seen both at Union Sq and Rockefeller. They have unique items such as shishito peppers, assorted mushrooms, chick peas, zucchini blossoms, and don't even get me started on the variety of Eggplants. It blows my mind!
I'm in happy land each time I visit. Of course I never go home empty handed and after my first experience, I've come prepared with a green reusable shopping bag each time.
They also have a cheese stand, wine stand, and on the cooler days I've seen a fresh fish stand from Montauk, LI. There's a guy who sells the freshly caught fish in custom made displays with plenty of ice on hand to keep them cool. Among these stands are various statues in gold, silver, wood, and stone. Be wary of strangers who mistakenly bump into them and say "Excuse me." They also sell a variety of organic meats and eggs. There are plenty of benches and seats for reorganizing your goodies or to take a nice break and observe people/dogs barking at the statues.
Thanks to John Q for mentioning this oddly named plaza that I can't pronounce for the life of me. -

This is an excellent market that's open year round on Wednesdays.
The stalls change seasonally to reflect what is naturally growing. In the fall you will find potatoes, squash, pumpkins, apples, green beans, leafy greens and all the staples like dairy, baked goods, root vegetables, wine, meat.
The winter stalls are sparse but cover the necessities - my favorite thing is a great stall with all bottled peach, cherry, etc. cider and they also sell fresh warm cider and cider donuts (.50).
Now that it's starting to get warm the stalls are expanding to include flowers, fresh herbs, apples. The bunched lilacs are very unique and beautiful ($6 a bunch) I love to buy potted herbs instead of the dry packaged kind. They add a great element to anything you cook and fresh ones cost the same or less than dried ones. If you take care of them you can have fresh herbs indefinitely. Mint ($4), Rosemary ($2), Basil ($3).
In the summer the market is fully functioning with stands of fresh fruit like peaches, cherrys, berries, etc. etc.; potted, bunched and hanging flowers; herbs and vegetables of all kinds. The market is small but fun to stroll through and covers any item you would find at the larger greenmarkets. It's a treasure of midtown east. -

Local produce and organic freaks rejoice!
It's a little small, but absolutely perfect for me (I work and live right in the area so I go shopping during lunch). It's open year-round on Wednesdays from 8AM - 6PM (though most stalls are gone by mid-afternoon) and the standard stalls sell fruit and veggies, fresh fish and meats, baked goods, cheese, and wine. It's right next to a branch of the New York Milkshake company so even if you can't find something you can grab a milkshake after browsing.Listed in: My Top Spots - NYC, My Neighborhood

I work near the Dag Hammarskjöld Plaza and spend my lunchtime every Wednesday all summer long here at the green market.
The bread stall offers a plethora of goodies (the chicken empanadas are decent). There are alot of produce stands (many offering fresh flowers as well!)
It's a welcoming alternative to the usual midtown lunch scene and also gives me an opportunity to load up on farm fresh seasonal produce and a fresh baguette, super fresh bouquet of flowers during my lunchtime to last me until the weekend.
My favorite is the variety of fresh herbs (sooooo fragrant--better than supermarket herbs) available at the produce stands and the late summer fruits and even different types of heirloom eggplants and potatoes.
Today, I stopped by during my lunch break and I spied with my little eye, an entire row of several varieties of purple and milky, pearly white eggplant, sweet summer corn, snap peas, fresh edamame, string beans, potatoes of every variety, wild summer garlics, lovely piquant peppers of every make and shape in their gorgeous fiery red and green rustic bouquets of summery flowers, bunches of fresh and super fragrant lavender, plump and juicy peaches and plums (with leaves on some of the stalks still on!) , summer squashes in a variety of shapes and sizes, sweet melons large and small, delectable squash blossoms (great if you know how to make a Spanish tapas dish called shrimp stuffed squash blossoms, eaten raw in a salad with goat cheese, or stuffed with cheese or cut up in a quiche).
Pura Vida Fishery also has a stall. However, since I stop by during my work lunch break, lugging fish back to the office isn't a brilliant idea and they are always gone by the time I leave work, thus, I have never tried them. Pura Vida is suppose to have amazing shellfish like fresh diver scallops, caught fresh via their day boat on Hamptons Bay, New York--thus making it local and sustainable so you don't add to your carbon emissions points by getting fish shipped from a continent away. Ronnybrook Farm Dairy, a small cheese stall and a cured meats stall also maintain a weekly presence at the market.
The yogurt drinks from Ronnybrook Farm are the best--especially the peach yogurt. -

I stumbled across this the other day -- there's a greenmarket every Wednesday here!
The stuff here is almost identical to the greenmarket in my hood (Inwood), so if I miss it on Saturday at home, I can swing by on Wednesday at work. SWEET!Listed in: Feast in the East

Dag Hammarskjold Plaza has a nice little farmer's market on Wednesdays. The official time listed on their website (http://www.grownyc.org...) is 8am to 6pm, but I went today before 8am, so it is probably open at 7am?
I would guess that there are 10+ stands. It's great that this greenmarket is open all year. I wish there were a greater variety of items and stands though. If there were, then I'd easily give it a 5.
There's usually a beef stand, fish stand, Ronnybrook Farms dairy stand, an apple stand, a potted plant stand, a couple of baked goods stands, and a number of produce stands. The people at Ronnybrook Farms really do give back your glass deposit money. They are very nice and honest people. -

This market seals the deal for me; East Midtown is an awesome place to live. In the midst of one of the busiest areas in the world, local farmers from NJ and up state NY come to 47th ST between 1st and 2nd Ave and sell fresh, organic, cage-free, grass-fed, produce, eggs, and meat. This market makes a crazy place feel like home.

You don't need to know how to spell his name. You don't even need to know who he was (for the record, Secretary-General of the United Nations.) But you should know that there is a Greenmarket at the Dag Hammarskjold Plaza every Wednesday throughout the year from 8am to 6pm, and it's worth the walk from your midtown east office to 47th and 2nd.
D.H. Greenmarket offers over 7 different farmers selling products ranging from produce and breads to fish and cheeses, so if you're not a vegetable lover, you can still support farmers from our region. Some of the farms that participate in this Greenmarket include Samascott Richards from Kinderhook, NY. As of the week of September 27 they were offering green beans, various root vegetables, late peaches and corn, concord grapes, white and yellow cauliflower and a host of varieties of apples. The Newfield Farm from Newfield, NJ has fresh flowers available throughout the year. At the Valley Shepherd Creamery from Long Valley, NJ, who farm 300 sheep on 120 acres, you can purchase a variety of cheeses. The best is their fresh ricotta, which is incomparable in many Italian recipes. If you're hesitant regarding dairy products made from sheep's milk, Ronnybrook Farms sells fresh cow's milk and yogurt drinks (the mango is amazing and tastes like a lassi.) There is also the Pura Vida Fisheries, where you can purchase fresh mussels and clams along with scallops, flounder, monkfish and whatever else is fresh off the boat that day.
You may be thinking to yourself "why would I waste my lunch hour here? I need to eat lunch, not buy raw vegetables!" There are actually two bakeries at the market, the Tribeca Oven and the Just Rugelach Company. Just Rugelach is certainly a misnomer: not only do they sell rugelach, but they also have crunchy granola, luscious sweet potato pies, empanadas, focaccia and strudel. (I'm sure lunch can be made out of those options somehow.)
It's a great option for those in the neighborhood who want something just a little different for lunch. I wish my office was still in the area just for this. -

Love this market not only is behind my apt is really great to shop for farmers vegetables ,during the summer they have better option but still better than the supermarkets around this area. If you buy your milk there you can exchange the glass bottle for a new one and get some discount every time!

What a great greenmarket! It is held year round on Wednesdays from 8am until midafternoon (though it is officially open until 6pm, many stalls pack up earlier). There are a great variety of fruits and vegetables available - try Terhune Orchards for fantastic cider and apples, peaches, apple and peach cakes, and more! The farmers are very helpful - always glad to explain how you can use an item that is new for you - and many give samples as well! There is a stall that has many patties, pies, and baked goods, Not Just Rugelach. There are also produce and fish stalls, as well as one with artisan cheeses.
Very convenient if you live/work in Midtown East. Also you can pass by the Cupcake Stop truck on the way, which often parks on 47th between 2nd and 3rd on Wednesdays! -

I work just 2 blocks from here, so I've wandered past quite a few times, although I don't really bother to stop anymore unless I want something specific. It's pretty small, and the selection is not that great, but the little plaza that it's in is very nice, a great place to grab a small lunch from the bakery stand, which is the only good one in my opinion. They have a variety of foccaccia, which look delicious, and quiche, which I've heard are pretty good. I tried the apple cookies before, and they were pretty tasty. I prefer taking more of a journey to the one in Rockefeller Center, on Thursdays and Fridays, it's worth the walk!
