I anticipated a hill full of flowers in full bloom, but I guess we arrived too early in the season. It was still a pretty sight to see all the different flowers that had bloomed though. It was a nice place to stop to have lunch and just enjoy the flowers and the quiet of nature. We also saw a peacock, some roosters and some white pigeons on the farm.

My friend had his camera focused on the peacock for at least 20 minutes hoping the peacock would open its tail. When he finally gave up, turned to put his camera back into its holster the peacock opened its beautiful tail and made a cackling noise almost as to tease my friend. It was so funny! The peacock had attitude!

The daffodils are blooming once again at the McLaughlin Daffodil Hill Ranch in Volcano, CA.  I first found out about this ranch when one of the Sierra Club hiking leaders that I had been traveling with made a detour and dropped a group of us here.  According to one of the workers the ranch takes up a little over four acres of land and has been run by the same family for well over a century.

On average Daffodil Hill is open to the public for only three weeks out of the year usually from late-March until mid-April.  The operating hours for the farm are 10:00 AM until 4:00 PM daily during those few weeks.  Visitors are welcome to visit the grounds free of charge.  There is a nicely groomed picnic area, and if you're lucky you might even get a glimpse of one of several pea fowls that are raised on the farm.

Next week might have been a better week to visit as there seemed to be a lot fewer flowers in bloom during this visit compared to my last visit.  As a general rule the farm opens to the public when 25 percent of the 300,000 bulbs have opened and closes once there are only 25 percent left in the blooming stage.  Rain or any inclement weather will close the ranch to the public so if bad weather is predicted you might want to call their hotline at (209) 296-7048 to get the most up-to-date information.

Besides daffodils there are other species of flowers planted and in bloom at the same time.  If your eyes are dazzled by flowery images you'll want to visit here at least once.  I've posted a few photos from our visit.

It's exactly what you would think it is, a hill of daffodils.  To be honest I thought it was going to be a lot bigger, as in daffodils as far as the eye can see.  The drive alone to get here was nice enough.  It was cool to see some daffodils that were as big as my hand but other than that I got tired of seeing so much yellow.  After you've seen one daffodil you've seen them all.  I'm an orchid type of girl and I think after going to the botanical gardens in Hawaii, daffodils just seem so ordinary to me.  If you forgot to bring food, there is a vendor across the street that sells things like hot dogs.  You can eat it in the large picnic area at the hill.

If you can make it here during full bloom, it really is a treat. The drive up to the hill is scenic. This spot is especially appealing if you are a photographer.

Daffodil Hill is an old 19th century farm up in Amador County that has been in the same family since the 1800's.  Over the past 150 years, the family and various other people have planted daffodils all over the property.  Today there are an estimated 400,000 daffodils.  Every year they bloom from mid-March to mid-April and the grounds open to the public from 10 AM to 4 PM.  Parking and admissions are free, but they do have a "donations welcome" bucket at the gate.

Across the street is a small cafe that sells cold drinks and sandwiches.

Good for families and anyone who loves nature.  There are over 300 varieties of daffodils in various colors.  Worth seeing.

Great place to take photos in the spring. Acres of daffodils, and some animals to amuse the kids.It wasn't quite as spectacular as I remember it, so perhaps it wasn't quite peak daffodil season. It's a bit of a drive from the Sacramento area, but it is a beautiful scenic drive without much traffic. It would make a great motorcycle ride. Nearby is Indian Grinding Stone State park, which has some nice walks and a small museum. The very small town of Volcano looked like it would be fun to explore too. This would be a nice day trip for either a family or a date.
