When my friends and I decided to do lunch I requested sandwiches! So we landed at Dad's; a tiny store front where you place your order at the counter, with a few sidewalk seats. And on a good day, it's nice to eat out there.
The Day After cold sandwich was loaded with turkey, cranberries (which gave it a slight sweetness), tomato, lettuce, and mustard on organic wheat bread. I held off on the cream cheese and mayo, which probably explains why my sandwich was, well...just a little bland.
Sandwich was a good size, and made when ordered. I'd definitely come back to try their grilled sandwiches and salads another time.

I've only been to the Freeport Blvd. location and was very happy with the food. A little pricey for a burger but worth it. The hostess is a sweetheart too.

Long live Dad's!
Once or twice a week, I walk to work with my puppy, Bella. She's a great work dog - she plays quietly by herself, takes naps in the sunbeams that peek through the blinds, and wags her whole butt whenever anyone comes creeping into my office to give doggie kisses.
Today our office banded together at lunch time and brought in Dad's Sandwiches. My order's always easy - either the Hot Blonde or the Hot Tuna. Today was Hot Tuna day. Perfectly spicy, full of dill and onions and tuna, this is basically the anti-staff-meeting sandwich unless you happen to have a tub of breath mints on hand, which I do not.
Dad's sandwiches are so chock full of goodness that I can never eat the whole thing. I left half the sandwich on my plate, and proceeded to have short office meetings with other workers, always careful to bring the sandwich/plate WITH ME so charming Bella would not do her typically "stand up on hind legs and eat whatever's within reach on the table" trick.
Unfortunately, I forgot the sandwich was still on my desk, and went around the corner for ONE MINUTE to ask my boss a question. Immediately, through the wall, I heard the unmistakable clinking of a spinning saucer hitting a wooden desk. I lept out of my chair, ran back into my office, and, sure enough, there was a satisfied (*burp*) Bella, an empty plate, and a huge tuna-covered face print on my paperwork.
Long story short, people AND dogs love Dad's.

Dude. What is wrong with people? Sac is so funny. "If it looks counter culture it must be cool"
Objective review based on 3 visits now. I will break it down by sandwich components.
Bread:
Boring. Standard. White. Bread. COVERED in butter/lard + little burnt chunkies from the last 300 sandwiches they made on the grill.
Tuna (one time):
Tasted old and fishy. I know what you are thinking, It's fish, duh, but wait, not that type of fishy, fishy like I wonder when they actually made that batch of tuna? Like late last week?
Cheese. half melted. nuff said. Gross.
turkey bacon avocado "california" filling:
SMASHED!
So you get your sandwich and its completely smushed together. Every time and it is so greasy it takes a ton of napkins to keep clean.
Poor sandwich execution. People are friendly though. OH, worst part is that its friken hot in there. no ventilation. Want to sit outside? Tough luck, townies kick it there all day.

The California Carnivore... excellent sandwich! Great friendly counter service (OK she was cute). It may be on the pricey side compared to the chains but its a local business and there's more (FRESH) ingredients on the sandwich than schlubway provides. I can't wait to sample more of their menu. Check it out!

This is a sandwich lover's paradise! The selection on their menu is huge and diverse, and I haven't had a bad one yet! I'm working my way through the menu, and so far the Angry Road Man gets my vote!
The salads are delicious too, but I think the best part about the place is that it is the whole package. There is always parking, the people are friendly, there is something for everyone on the menu, you can phone in the order, and did I mention how nice the people are?
Seriously, this is service to emulate.

I eat here at least once per week. I'm so lucky that it's across the street from where I work. Everyone knows my name, and their service is great. I love bringing new customers in, because I know they are going to have a great experience.
My favorite sandwiches are: Besto Pesto, Honky Tonk Hero (the veg. version), & Green Machine. Their Caesar salads are also v. good. Their salad portions are HUGE (if you get the larger of the two sizes) & tasty.
If it's your first time, I'd suggest trying to avoid the lunch rush (11:30-1:30). If you can't, though, no worries. Just be prepared to wait a while or call your order in ahead of time (which is what I do when I'm at work).

I finally made it to Dad's. But not the restaurant Dad's. Someday!
But anyways, the sandwiches were the real deal. The reviews are spot on, this place rocks.
I tried three of the sammiches and they were all winners. My fave was probably the Blue Collar Dream. Spicy! I say probably cuz I really liked the other 2 (Bikini Kill and Angry Road).
Now to go back and try the rest!

Solidly tasty, but kind of expensive and small portions.
If it's convenient, it's worth it.
Not worth passing the Bread Store for, though!
UPDATE: I find it strange that people keep complimenting the service. The employees were nice enough, but nothing special. Unless you count when one of the employees stormed into the back and started screaming expletives and kicking the trash can. That was definitely...special.
A large and diverse menu is the first thing I noticed when walking into this place. (The second was how small it was, but that didn't seem to present much of a problem.) The sandwich concoctions are generally interesting, and so far all the ones I've tried are delicious. My only complaint is that it's not located near my office, and I can't eat there very often as a result. Next time I take a mental health day, however, this is where you'll find me around noon.

I don't know about you, but my dad can't make a sandwich for shit! That's why I head to Dad's Sandwich Shop. Sure, there's limited seating (as some Yelpers have mentioned), but what they lack in seating they make up for in sandwich selection and general tastiness. With more than 30 sandwiches (and a handful of salads) on the menu, there's something for everyone.
Depressed that Thanksgiving comes only once a year? Try the Day After; it's Turkey Day goodness on a sandwich.
Obsessed with the King? One bite of the Fat Elvis (peanut butter, local honey and banana) will have you "All Shook Up."
Jonesing for a big, fat, Greek sandwich? Sample the Opaaa.
Nostalgic for your riot grrrl days? Grab a Bikini Kill and channel the founder of it all, Kathleen Hanna.
Looking to end a bad relationship? The Bad Breath Special might do the trick!
Like I said, there's a sandwich for everyone - no matter what floats your boat. Fans will be happy to note that there's plans to open a Dad's Kitchen on Freeport Blvd. Rest assured, I'll be one of their first customers.

You know Dad's serves up a good sandwich when you find yourself dreaming about eating there in your sleep. The Hot Blonde is da bomb and the Blue Collar will make you holler. And speaking of blue collars, Dad's is located right across the street from SEIU Local 1000 headquarters. There should be a Dad's across the street from every union hall, serving the joy of sandwich to workers with blue collars everywhere.

The sandwich place is not hard to find since it's blue. I enjoyed the time I was there eating outside. It help keep my five year old occupied. The sandwiches are terrific. It's hard to get the hang of the place. But after watching the way they order and what they do. YOU GET IT.
First the menu is on the wall. Secondly you can get confused with what you can and cannot do to a sandwich there. I was so happy to see so many other kinds of sandwiches that I have to say going back will be a joy.
The soup of the day was delicious. I fed the entire portion to my five year old as she danced around on her patio style chair and hopped on one foot on the tiles in the sand. This works well if you have an energic child.
The sodas are in the coolers and they have some outrageous ones. I think I picked one up that was crandberries and cherry. It was delicious. A bit tart but delicious.
Oops I regress. You order at the counter, grab your drink and either wait outside for them to call your name or bring it to you.
The bathroom is in the back. You come into the front door. If you want to go to the bathroom follow through the door directly in front of you and turned right. Follow up the stairs to this little door . Knock first then open it. It's a charming bathroom. I know. WHY are you looking at the bathroom? It's a woman thing I think.

OH yeah, they have pretty good salads and a unique variety of sodas.. really good huge sandwiches

Ambiance? No. Tons of seating? No. Convenient location? Not so much. The home of the best kick ass sandwiches you will ever have? Yes!
Before Dad's, I have never had a dream about a sandwich. Until I had the Blue Collar Dream. Maybe that's how it got it's name. Or maybe it's a sign that I have issues.
The menu is reminds me of being trapped on an island with 50 gorgeous, intelligent, and sexy women, and I have to pick only one for a date that night. It will be a tough choice, but no matter the selection, it will be worth it!
Dad's serves good, solid grub that makes you want to go back.

True the sandwiches are fresh and tasty but the portions must have shrunk cuz my last hot tuna sandwich was more like an appetizer, certainly not enough to fill up Dad.
Here's a place that I almost never would've known about if some pals hadn't of told me. The wierd thing is that I only live a few blocks from here! Dad's is a nice little neighborhood sammich shop. Not a whole lot of places to sit your rump, but I don't think of it as that type of place anyways. It's more of a "stroll by, get a sandwich to go, head to the park and enjoy the day" kind of place. Whatever you're craving for in a sandwich, they can do it.
Personally, I wrap my gums around a grilled cheddar and tuna sammich. I need to remind myself to try other things, but I'm kinda stuck on those at the moment.

I seriously don't get the attraction of this place. A friend and I went one day for lunch, waited in line for 15 minutes then waited for 20 after ordering. Only to find out they had 'lost' one of our orders for which we had to wait another 10.
All of this for a squished sandwich on standard white bread overcooked to the point where the butter/lard burned and picked up the funky taste of an over used fry top grill.
You couldn't drag me back.

Dad's has the best sandwiches in the downtown area hands down - plus fresh made soups every day that are real soups - with vegtables and a good broth - where can you get that? It's small with very limited seating - so plan take-out as an option. The sandwiches are top notch and the prices are good. Whenever I head out with a small group for a casual lunch Dad's is at the top of my list.
They are opening a new one by Yogurtopia on Freeport - I can't wait.

4 stars for above average, 3.5 is a little more like it. I didn't think it was anything special.
They have a nice variety of interesting hot sandwiches, but I personally don't like paying $8 for a sandwich. Kinda small too. If you're willing to shell out the cash, then support your local sandwich joint. The ambiance, or lack thereof, seems to be the main reason why people love this place. Go figure.

"Get some sour cream and onion chips with some dip, man, some beef jerky, some peanut butter. Get some Hagen-Dazs ice cream bars, a whole lot, make sure chocolate, gotta have chocolate, man. Some popcorn, red popcorn, graham crackers, graham crackers with marshmallows, the little marshmallows and little chocolate bars and we can make s'mores, man. Also, celery, grape jelly..."
Dad's is like that time Kenny went out for groceries. But, in this alternate timeline, he made it home. And everybody made sandwiches. I used to think they were too small, but then I got the Blue Collar Dream and was proven very, very wrong.
Very much the yin to la bonne soup's yang. Dad's soup is also really good. Especially the chili.

Dad's has some of the best sandwiches I've ever had. My favorite is the Bikini Kill, but what can I say, I LOVE ham.
Friendly staff, nice atmosphere, no more free bag of chips with your sandwich but that's O.K., it's still a great value for an incredible lunch.
Not a whole lot of seating but who cares; you just can't complain when it's this good.

The menu is always fun for a newbie. The different combinations just boggles my mind.
My companion had a Hot Blonde. He liked it. I forget what I had, but I asked for chicken since the sandwich doesn't come with any meat. They gave me chunks of chicken at no additional cost. That always gets bonus points from me.
When you're craving some sandwiches, skip Subway's and try something new.

This place rocks! Some of the best sandwiches around (not just in Sac). HUGE selection, decent prices, cool staff.
They get a little crazy with the mustard sometimes, but as long as you know that, you can order accordingly.
If what you need for lunch is a delicious sandwich then Dad's is it. I don't go there as often as I would like but it is great none the less. Zack, Alison and Sam, who own the tiny little spot on S street, have a wonderful thing going. It is located in a den of state office builings so the place gets packed for lunch. You have to wait for your sandwich but it is worth it.
I highly recomend Dad's Rueben and the Chunky Chicken sandwiches but I usually get Dad's Hot Classic with turkey with everything, grilled and dont forget the pepper plant sauce. Oh damn its good!
If you are feeling a bit adventurous and nostalgic for The King then try the Fat Elvis which is a grilled peanut butter, honey and banana sandwich on white bread. Just the way the Big E would have wanted it.

Dagwood Bumstead would think he's stumbled into a Sandwich Shangri-la. And I do too.
You can't miss the bright blue exterior . . . and it's how I first noticed this tiny place - a case of whip-flash, while driving down S.(I swear I wasn't speeding bike coppers. . . luv you). Probably best to call in your order to avoid holding up the line (and looking like a dork - okay, that's my area of expertise) while you try your damnedest to make a decision from the dizzying array of sandwich seduction. There has to be at least 30 different varieties, both hot and cold, plus salads and breakfast items.
Love that they're open until Beer-Thirty on Fridays.(yeah, I could see myself still wondering what the hell to order).
Dad's Chicken Salad is one my favorites (I'm drooling now just thinking about it. . slurp. . ). The Hot Tuna has a nice spicy kick to it due to the Pepper Plant sauce. It also has two types of melted cheese . . . I'm a happy gal.
Now, when calling in my order for this sandwich, I felt a little bit like a perv. or a dude akin to Beavis and Butthead:
"Um, I'll have a Hot Blonde, please."
It didn't hit me until hanging up the phone, but I thought it would have been amusing should any co-workers had overheard, that I was ordering a "hot blonde" on the "man's" phone. . .
Anyway, don't crank call "Dad's". .. I will hunt you down. . J/K. . Dad is just soooo cool . . and his son is a new "Dad" too!

A few days before moving away from Sacramento, and I finally had a sandwich from Dad's.
Dad's has a variety of sandwiches that are common sandwich favorites with some slightly decadant curve balls thrown in. Walnuts? Cream Cheese? Hmm, when I'm back in town and feeling more adventurous, I'll give some of those a shot. A lot of people seem to love it, though.
But they'll make almost any sandwich you order. I got a roast beef with pastrami and provalone. Couldn't have made a better one myself, and that's saying something!

Dad's is a little blue sandwich shop on S Street which serves the best sandwiches in town ( many flavored with a pepper sauce Taylor's carries that has changed the way I make a sandwich, ANY sandwich), so I am very excited to see they are opening up a restaurant in my neighborhood! I never get to go there enough to get their breakfast sandwich with Tri tip added, but thinking of it makes me drool.
Soon to open is Dad's II, right next door to the Freeport Bakery! I'm very excited about that!
Thank you yelpers for leading me to a place I would eat at again and again. Their menu has so many fantastic sounding items it was hard to choose. I like that they have their menu and prices on their website, so I knew what I was in for. I picked the Hot Blonde (the name I wasn't keen on, as I am brunette but I digress) and it was fantastic. Everything tasted so fresh, and the chicken is cut into pieces, which is awesome, because there is nothing like having your whole patty drop out of your sandwich. The order taker guy was pretty decent looking. All in all, I'll be going back to try the other selections that I got it narrowed down to when I ventured here.

Pretty damn good sandwich I must say... the only complaint is that it was just a little smaller than I had expected. Would've given only four stars for the sandwiches after my first visit, but my second visit clinched the five stars due to one simple reason: awesome GRILLED sandwiches. My order took a significant time longer than my lunch partner's because he had ordered the standard cold cut sandwich. The extra time that was taken to prepare my "Angry Road Man" sandwich (turkey, bacon, mushrooms, tomatoes and swiss cheese) was so that the crunch would be perfect! Crispy buttered sourdough outside serves as the perfect counterpoint to the melty, salty goodness of the sandwich's innards for a memorable munch.
There really is a lot of love in that sandwich. And I'm stoked that they are now open Saturday so I can make it into Dad's for an ever-lovin' sando.

I wish my dad was the Dad's Deli Dad....then I'd get all the salami and cheese I wanted for free! My wife and I had lunch together at Dad's. She's a hot blonde, and you can also ORDER a hot blonde. That's Hot. I opted for salami and cheese on sourdoh. I liked the vibe in this place very much. A friendly, laid-back, casual atmoshere. Dad's Deli has the Boil and Fry Day (BFD) every year in the parking lot. It's a real hootenanny. Lots of beer, food, and music.

I can't believe I haven't yelped Dad's yet! The first time I came here a month or so ago I ran into Wendy R. and another yelper whose name I don't remember. I have been back a few times and it's always delicious.
Sometimes I get the large Kitchen Sink salad, which has so much meat and cheese and delicious veggies on. Or I get the salad that has apples and blue cheese on. I love how they chop up the apples in tiny bits so you can eat it with a bite of lettuce and cheese instead of having to eat it by itself. I have also gotten the Day After turkey sandwich, and some other sandwich with turkey, ham and roast beef. There are so many sandwiches that look delicious I have a hard time deciding!
The prices are very reasonable, and everything is fresh and delicious. Dad is super nice too!

I went to Dad's with a friend and had a fantastic sandwich. I got the one that's peanut butter, banana and honey. YUM!
The only bummer about this place is that they're only open during the week and during the day. It did take a while for us to get our sandwiches too. But that sandwich definitely made up for it. I'd like to go back and try something else.
One can taste the pride. Ok, the ingredients are above average, if not excellent, but Dad's truly want to make a great product. I've only been a handful of times, but each time my expectations were exceeded. The Rueben was fine with a hint of sweetness, as is expected with Russian Dressing. The Dad's Classic breakfast sandwich kept me going all morning (can't wait to try the rest of the breakfast sandwiches). Order ahead and save a few minutes.

After months of meaning to try Dad's I finally made it in today. It was during the lunch hour, and it was packed. The line did move fairly quickly, but with line and wait it took a good half hour from entering the door to getting my food.
The menu here is large and I was unsure of my order until the moment the girl asked what I'd have and I quickly got out "chunky chicken, wheat instead of sourdough, and a chocolate cookie" before I felt bad for holding up the line.
This turned out to be a wise choice. The chunky chicken sandwich is quite possibly the best sandwich I've ever feasted upon. It's got large chunks of chicken (they don't lie), pesto and pepper sauce, walnuts (!), and provolone cheese. Then they grill it to perfection. Yum.
The next time I go in I will be joining their frequent buyers club, in which you can prepay for your food and then order it by phone.
