Don't let the name fool you, this place offers the best Thai food in the East Bay. I just returned from a trip to Thailand, and the food at Da Nang is as close to the delicious cuisine found in Bangkok as you can find here. It is full of wonderful flavors, and spicy in a good way. The Tom Yum Goong is soooo tasty, and I also loved the salad with Thai eggplant. Our waiter suggested one of the specials - a catfish dish with lots of pepper - which was also very good.

Weird how they have pho noodles at a thai restaurant but IT IS GOOD! Soup is one of the best I've had in the East Bay and we all know it's ALL ABOUT THE SOUP. The only thing is that they only have one kind of pho... but I'd gladly have this than a variety of yucky bowls.

mango with sticky rice is mediocre... i like my sticky rice not too sticky and not toooo sweet. and my mango ripe not green. thanks.

I came to Da Nang with one desire: Pho! I've been searching around for amazing Pho since moving up to East Bay. I'm not looking for a super fancy restaurant; in fact, the dingier the better, because I find those places serve the best Pho. One cold night last week the craving struck, and I decided to give Da Nang a try.

Rare steak, lots of noodles, basil, bean sprouts and a hefty dollup of Sriracha sauce...my oh my it was DE-LISH.  Best part was that the broth was NOT greasy whatsoever, and the portion was so large that I couldn't finish.  I staggered back home and collapsed on the couch in an intense food coma.  Therefore, I consider the mission a success.  I can't speak for the Thai food served there - maybe I will try it sometime, but probably not when their Pho is so amazing.

ding ding, step aside. da nang is vying for my affection, and im not strong enough to say no. its... just... so... good...

so, let me start off slow. we'll go with decor. cute, not overdone, and comfortable. i like.

service? the guy i encountered was calling me honey, but i wasnt creeped out. he was a kindly man who just seemed happy with life. he made small talk, was not creepy, and was super sweet.

and now, gettin down to business... the food!

of course, i am on the quest for the greatest pad thai, well, ever. so, i go for the fall back and let me tell you, ive gotten really snobby about thai food lately, and this impressed me.  it was mixed well, good meat-to-noodle proportions, and the flavor was just so YUMMMMM.

also had the thai fried rice (my other fall back) and it made me happy. rice is a simple dish-any restaurant that claims to be authentic should not mess this up. sadly, i have had the bad rice (which results in a very cranky me). there is no such thing as bad rice at da nang.  nope. just not possible.  it was perfecto.

so, to summarize, yes, and again again again. i'll be swingin by, lemme know who wants to go with! heads up though, i eat with no mercy when it comes to thai food. bring your a-game.

Came here once with a group of co workers for lunch and another time with my hubby for dinner - both times very satisfied :) Food is great and the service is just as good. Hubby was even able to ask for the singer of the song currently playing when we had dinner :D

Lunched by myself here today. Stunned is the word I could use, but after looking at the restaurant from the outside for years, I shouldn't have been suprised. Boxes and other supplies stacked near the door. Flourescent lighting fixtures with dark messy things inside, possibly leaves, who knows? Darkened front windows. Bare old tables. The waitress sat me at the back at this huge table (I was alone!), and I asked to be seated near the front in a two-person table. The pumpkin curry, recommended by yelp reviewers: a disappointment for someone who has had better not just around the corner at Bua Luang at the bottom of Solano Avenue, and across town at Ruen Pair, two blocks south on San Pablo Avenue, and the best, at Racha on Telegraph Ave south of campus. I don't need to try this one again.

On the way here, one of the people in the car says, "I always like to judge a Thai restaurant on how good their Pad Thai is." I totally agree and have been doing that for years! Good call!

So guess what I had???? Yep and it was damn good. Just the right amount of noodles, sauce, peanuts, carrots, etc... I'll also add the Thai Tea is da bomb! Like candy in a glass. Yum. Enjoy!

PS: Now its time to explore the rest of the menu.

Why do I get these looks at Thai restaurants whenever I stop in at 5:30 for my take out like I'm going to rob the place? I'm smaller than most of the Thais who work there and dressed like I came from an office job, which I have. I thought they were going to reach for a butcher knife at Da Nang. So I order and I'm window shopping outside when the young waiter rushes out a demands $1.10 more. What? Oh, the menu in the window is not the same as the one you are now showing me? Do you seem concerned with anything other than getting more money from me or that I might be a little annoyed? Nope. Do you care that I won't return? We will never know.

Two stars for the run-of-the-mill chicken and chasew nuts in oyster sauce.

Hm.  So.  I've dropped in before to indulge strictly on desserts which were yummy, although they don't have custard.  Eh.  We met the owner & he is quite nice.  For all that, a star is in order.

We ended up here for dinner because our usual Thai spot Ruen Pair was closed.  Being a party of 5, we got to try a lot of dishes, & being that we had our hopes up to eat at Ruen Pair, I couldn't help but compare the two restaurants.  Eggplant with yellow curry was tasty (but my mom's black bean sauce is better!), as was the tofu & veggies with peanut sauce, but that was really overwhelmingly drowned with the sauce.  Pad thai wasn't the best I've tasted, didn't really care fore it, nothing compared to Ruen Pair.  Pineapple fried rice was tasty & light, whereas I sometimes find Ruen Pair to be heavy in curry powder/paste for seasoning.  One more star.  We had a couple more dishes but I can't remember...

We were more or less satiated...  until my boyfriend unfortunately saw a big ol' rat run across the ceiling light.  I kinda wish he hadn't seen that!  That sadly pretty much killed any content satiation and scurried away any additional Yelp stars..  ::scurry-scurry:: !!!

I've never lived in Thailand or known whether the Thai restaurants were actually serving authentic Thai food or an Americanized version of it.  I base what I like from my first taste of Thai food which was in Sunnyvale at Thai Basil (thanks to Anna L.).  I really liked the way that they cooked their curries and their Pad Thai and since then, I've never really found any restaurant who cooked those same dishes as Thai Basil until I tasted Da Nang's yellow chicken curry - sweet yet a bit spicy with slow simmered chicken which was tender, accompanied with onions and potatoes.  The curry sauce was not all watery like many other curry dishes I've tasted.  In addition, we also ordered a tofu dish with vegetables.

The restaurant is simple and modern inside.  We did takeout so we didn't get to experience their table service but our food was ready within 10-15 minutes.  I would come back and try some of their other dishes but for now, a solid 4 stars.

Isn't it interesting how as we grow we acquire penchants and tastes for things we once thought we could never desire?

I remember the first time I tasted coffee. I had to spit it out because it was so bitter. Now, after years and years of early rising to make a dime, I like it pitch black; the thicker the better, and give me that acidic central/south American stuff, please.

Da Nang was the first place I ever tasted salted fish broccoli. This is a rather pungent dish with an emphasis on the salty and the bitter parts of the palette, (not two flavors we westerners think need to be highlighted). So why then is it so delicious?

I don't know. Why do people drink gin? I mean, it smells and it tastes like cat piss. And what about that stinky French Brie? Pew!

Of course, I no longer eat fish, so I ordered their second best dish on the menu: the red curry pumpkin. This dish is amazing. It is the perfect texture: creamy and smooth. It touches on all of the flavors evenly and at once: sweet, sour, bitter and salty; creating a symphony in your mouth.

http://www.flickr.com/...

I like to balance out the softness of this dish with an order of vegetable Imperial Rolls. Dip them in the sweet chili sauce, and crunch your way to deep fried heaven.

http://www.flickr.com/...

Who knows who I'll decide to be next? Just months ago I would have laughed at you if you told me I'd give up duck. Now I have a penchant for a vegetable based diet. Whatever I decide, I know Da Nang will always find something delicious to serve me.

Pros: Large pieces of chicken - white meat!  Not overly greasy

Decent pad see ew.  Clean environment.  Pretty busy on a Sunday at 2 pm.  I would definitely return!

So my hubbie tells me that at some point in the past I had been to this restaurant before...

"In 2006?" I ask

'No." He replies. "Way before then. But it was different then..."

Well, I have to say I didn't remember the food or the experience. But I will remember today's!

Unlike a previous reviewer, the Bun Xoe we had today was yummy! Crunchy, yet soft, full of ground pork and bursting with sprouts. Wrap it up in lettuce, add some dipping sauce, and it' was a nice perfect start to a light dinner.

Service was adequate. The place was just getting patrons- we like to have an early dinner on Sundays to accommodate our Sunday night shows!

The ambiance was cheerful. Someone- the owner? came out and asked patrons about their food and experience. It's always nice to see that happen at restaurants.

I do feel lucky to live in Albany and have so many good and memorable places to eat.

Thanks Da Nang!

The interior is marginal, the lighting is so-so, and the food is absolutely delicious.

It's as close to authentic Thai food as I have eaten in the Bay Area - proper Pad Thai (moist and yummy, not dry and pasty), well-portioned and perfectly spicy Som Tum, and categorically great curries. The number 50 (Panang Beef) is stupid good. Oh yeah, and CHANG?!  Plus the owner Charlie is welcoming and talkative. Simply the best Thai food in Berkeley/Albany/El Cerrito, if not the entirety of the East Bay.

Muang Thai (Da Nang) Thai & Vietnamese Restaurant serves Thai food which is about as good as Thai food gets. Chef Charlie suggested at lunch today that we try the Thai Pumpkin Curry, which we ordered a la carte with chicken along with another chicken curry dish, Gang Ga-Ree Gai, and a deep-fried fillet sole dish with sweet basil and spicy chili sauce, Pla Sarm Rod. I discovered that all three dishes were cooked to perfection, and when we asked Chef and Owner Charlie about the delicious sauces, he replied,

"The sauces I make are completely authentic. I make each sauce 100% myself, not 50/50 mixed with a pre-made sauce, as some other restaurants do."

The freshness of the ingredients was immediately apparent from the very first bite, and the subtle blends of each type of seasoning led us to marvel as we tried each dish that surely, this dish must be the very best Thai selection on the menu. Each of these three seemed beyond a ten on a ten-scale... and we ended up stuffing ourselves on all three of these spectacular dishes along with sticky rice with mango for dessert. We loved the food so much we ended up swabbing the serving bowls with rice to sponge up every last bit of each sauce... something I have not done at any other Thai restaurant, ever.

I've dined at many Thai restaurants all around the San Francisco bay area, where we are truly blessed to enjoy such diversity in Thai cooking... and Muang Thai stands out as being one of the very Best of the Bay!

An interesting side-note is that karaoke is available for parties later in the evenings, if pre-arranged... something that this restaurant used to do while at its previous location.

I really struggled between three and four stars for this place...

We liked... The Thai food... the no-frills yet clean atmosphere... the friendliness of the two employees working the front of the house... the quiet vibe... the cute waiter.

We didn't like... the somewhat soggy (Vietnamese) Banh Xeo... the slow service due to only two people working the front... the fact that we paid almost $10 for some white rice and a couple cans of Diet Coke...

So... three stars, but plan to go back and hopefully upgrade the score. It got pricey though, more than most Thai places...

This is the perfect place for Americanized Thai food.

Charlie, the owner, is a marvelous host. His geniality made the dining experience here pleasant and comfortable, and his effort and execution were spot on and not at all over-the-top.

Perhaps it's just an artifact of the atmosphere he generated, but I noticed that the other patrons here were quite likable too - polite, happy, and social - creating the perfect context for a satisfying meal. Usually I'm just in the mfckin zone with Asian food and could care less about emotions and feelings, but damn, this restaurant really did squeeze out some tender love.

The food itself is okay. As with most of the Thai food in the East Bay, the food is super-heavy on sweetness and light on spice.

I'd give this restaurant a 3 for food and 5 for ambiance. Conveniently, the hyphy 18 line from Shattuck will take you straight there to indulge in pretty good food and some proper dialogue.

Sorry, yelpers but I'm not in agreement with the high stars.  I went here because of the reviews and was sadly disappointed.  I really wanted to like this place!  The bad thing is that I don't even entirely remember the name of the two dishes that we tried.  I know that one dish was a shrimp in peanut sauce.  The peanut sauce was sooo thick it was like Skippy's peanut butter.  I trust that this place is probably still good and maybe we just ordered two wrong dishes, or maybe the regular chef was on vacation that night, or maybe...oh hell, I'll never know cuz I'm not going back.

Da Nang serves Thai and Vietnamese food which I guess isn't as bizarre as the combo of Chinese take out/ Doughnut shops that you find in SF.

In my two visits here I've tried both Thai and Vietnamese dishes and everything was just fine.  Nothing about the food left a lasting impression, though I can tell the owner is very proud and passionate about his restaurant.   I believe he is Thai.   He is always eager to chat with the patrons who are buzzed from Singha beer.  And he likes to share his story about living in Thailand, going to markets and the awards his restaurant have won.

The place is very clean and they're open pretty late.

Was here on a Sunday afternoon, around 2:30 and thankfully they were still open for lunch. There were only one other table dining there but otherwise the place was deserted. Although the sign said Thai & Vietnamese cuisine this place is more Thai than anything, I order a noodle soup with pork & shrimp.
The broth was quite good but a bit salty for my taste, while my bf order the flat noodle w/ beef it didn't taste "Thai" to me it was more Chinese tasting. It was not bad nonetheless but I'm sure my bf won't be coming back here for a second try, but I will.

This place is Thai food heaven!

If you can't get enough of curry then this is the place for you. They have all different kinds, but my boyfriend and I went with the Yellow Curry Chicken and Potatoes and the Pumpkin Curry with Pork. The yellow curry was so good, I kept saying I was finished and sticking my fork in the bowl for one last bite. My Thai iced tea was very good as well. I had a bad experience with Thai iced tea once and have always been wary of trying it again, but this one was just the perfect amount of spice and sweet.

The menu is huge and if you aren't in the mood for Thai there's also a Vietnamese menu if you want some pad thai.

The staff here is really friendly and won't hesitate to help you or recommend a dish if you can't decide. The food is amazing and well priced. Next time I need a curry fix I'm coming here :)

Some friends were helping me paint my new place, and Thai food seemed conveniently perfect to warm our bellies and satiate the fact that we were going to have to do some manual labor. My friend said this is one of her favorite Thai places close to my new house. I figured I could take her word for it, but turns out I shouldn't have. My friend's very nice boyfriend offered to pick-up our food, maybe had they delivered directly to our door it would have been hotter. We ordered Rice Wrapped vegetarian Spring Rolls. They were chewy and the sauce was flavorless. It's one of those sauces where you wonder if you just saturate your food in the sauce if maybe you can expect a flavor burst. Never happened.

The two main dishes, Pad Sea Ew and Mixed vegetables and tofu was just ok. Again, lacking flavor. Freshness was mediocre, taste was the same. I just wanted to be good, but it wasn't. Didn't taste any chili, basil, or onion, where's the flavor then?

I'd pass on going there again, except to try the food once more actually eating at the restaurant. Imagine that for a concept?

The owner, Charlie, is really sweet. He gave us an off-menu dish that he and his family usually have, and everything that we had (pumpkin curry, gluten/tofu satay, papaya salad & brown rice) was good. I kind of love places with great customer service. Prices for what you get are really reasonable.

3 stars for service, the waitress was working her mini-skirt and leg warmers, but didn't understand anything I said

3 stars for food, the vermicelli bowl didn't have very much pork. The coconut satay was kinda greasy and bland. The grape leaves stuffed with ground beef were delicious.

1 star for the fact that I was done eating before wifey got her food. I even tried to wait, but my dinner got cold while waiting.

5 stars for the price. Dinner for 2 for under $40 including drinks and a tip.

Anyone out there remember the movie "Good Morning, Vietnam?"  Robin Williams portrays Adrian Cronauer, a Radio DJ who gets assigned to the US Armed Services Radio Station in Vietnam around the time the war was starting to heat up exponentially.

I can relate to his character (based on a real person) in many basic ways:

1.  He taught English overseas in a fun and unorthodox way.  My style was more like forming Conga lines and dancing around the classroom and snaking our way around the hallways to our latest lesson, but you get my point.

2.  He locked horns with "middle management." I don't where I work now, but I certainly have worked for some real a**holes at other companies.

3.  He was unhappy about the war, as I am extremely unhappy with our current war. Well, there's nothing humorous I can find to say about that...

But most importantly, I can REALLY relate to:

4.  He was NOT a Morning Person!

So, what's this got to do with a Thai/Vietnamese restaurant you may ask?  Well, it was just the "Da Nang" part of the restaurant's name that kept replaying a ditty Robin William's character sang on the radio one morning when he was clearly pissed off at his painfully early time slot for his radio show:

"Viva Da Nang
Viva Da Nang
Da Nang Me, Da Nang Me
Why don't you just get out a rope and hang me???"

Now, while that's how I feel from the time I get up until about 11:35am (I rant about this once again in my "House of Chicken and Waffles" review.) This, however, is no reflection on this little gem of a restaurant that Toni M.recommended to us Yelpers.  Toni, you RULE!

As a matter of fact, I was at the end of my rope and hunger panging away as we made our way over to Da Nang.

The service was attentive and gracious.  My companion had some garlic calamari dish which is a typical test for her.  If the calamari (or sometimes octopus) is tender, then she knows the chef is quite capable of doing great things.

I  wanted to get the Vietnamese crepe that Toni M. described, but the combination plates were calling to me since I was so hungry.  I ended up getting a combo of:  chicken satay, imperial rolls, and moo yang (bbq pork).  Two words for the chicken and pork:  awesome seasoning!  The chicken was tender and moist and the coconut marinade was an addictive confection, the pork was perfectly seasoned.  Yum.  The imperial rolls were also good.  They gave me so much food that half of it went towards my dinner  the same night.

So, service: 4.5 stars
Food:  4.0 stars
Ambiance: well, eclectic fits the scene here.  I had to take two stars away here since my dining companion was obsessing over the brackish water in the live bamboo containers.  It didn't bother me, but it might bother you if you end up sitting next to it. So, 3.0 stars there..

We shall be back for more!

Moderately Scrumptious

I used to go here when I lived around the area and felt like quick decent Thai food.  What made this place different from other Thai places is their inclusion of Vietnamese dishes on their menu.  I guess you could look at it as a Vietnamese restaurant with Thai food...tomatoes potatoes.

The exterior of the restaurant doesn't scream "try me."  It's next to some burrito shop and shoe shop and doesn't draw in your average Joe who has no idea what this place is.  But once you enter, the place looks decent enough.  Admittedly I've only placed orders to go, so I can't comment on the service, but everyone working there seems friendly enough.

I liked ordering their sweet and spicy chicken with fried rice.  I like the sweet and savory aspects of Thai cuisine, and Da Nang doesn't disappoint.  Overall, the food is pretty decent for the price.  It isn't the cheapest place around, but I can imagine paying more for the food if it were served at a "nicer" restaurant.

Note - check the bag before you leave.  I have, on more than one occasion, not gotten the sauce for my dishes!

I would recommend you at least try this place.  I have yet to get anything here that is bad, but only a few dishes are pretty good.  It's not too expensive and might just turn into your go-to Thai place if you live around the area.  If your taste buds tend to lean toward the spicier side, I'd recommend going to Ruen Pair down the street (a few blocks past Buchanan, on San Pablo)

Although I have yet to try the Thai food, the Vietnamese food, particularly the pho, is superb!  Everything is always so fresh, and you can't beat the price--$6.95 for an incredibly generous bowl of soup!  The owner and the staff are always very friendly and accommodating.  Authentic, delicious, and always a bargain, I highly recommend this place!

Despite the misleading name, Da Nang Krungthep is the best Thai this side of the Bay bridge.  I have lived in Thailand and just got back recently and can confirm once again, that this place is awesome.  I recommend their eggplant salad but most things rock.  They are friendly and I often see Thais dining or just hanging out, a good sign for authenticity. They also do exclusive Thai deserts.  Give it a try, you won't regret it.

I finally made it there after hearing about how good the food is over there.
I ordered 3 items off of a list my co-worker suggested. They were all tasty, can't wait to go back there and try something else.

*Update* It's merged with a Thai place, or something like that, they both share a single building, and you get both a Thai and a Vietnamese menu.  They said they would be seperating soon, but I'm kinda confused.

i've been comming here for years, i've seen the owner's son grow from a toddler to a teenager and now off to college, and all that time, its been great.  If you want something Asian, but different, come here.  If you have a cold or the flu, or even if your nose is just stuffed up, get the Hot and Sour soup, it does wonders.

I was always a HUGE fan of this restaurant. It was usually empty, which made me sad. For vegetarians, it's a must. The food is incredible--it doesn't taste anything like most Vietnamese and Thai. If you order it extra spicy, it will truly be exhiliratingly spicy.

I always thought Danang would go out of business soon. Good to see it's still open. Give it a chance. Try a thick curry, or the Vietnamese pancake (bahn xeo), or the delicious spring rolls.

After eating at countless Thai restaurants (and even the disgusting Thai temple in Berkeley), living with a Thai roommate who's family owns a Thai restaurant, and traveling to Thailand for 6 weeks, I am very picky about my Thai food.   This place is the best Thai restaurant in the Oakland/Berkeley area.

They do a few things only real Thai restaurants will do
- Chicken basil (Gai Krapao) is minced.  I hate when places don't mince their basil chicken.  It's nearly sacrilegious
- Gen Kiew Wan is actually served with eggplant and bamboo
- they have Kao Soi!!!  From northern Thailand (Chiang Mai area) this isn't even served in a lot of places in Bangkok.  The noodles are amazing! Only thing is that the curry sauce is a bit thicker than usually prepared in Thailand
- they have dessert treats available to take home after dinner
- Cafe yen and Cha yen are perfectly sweet and just enough cream

Only other place nearly as good as this place is Champa Garden (Thai and Laotian) in Oakland

I tried this place just because it was close (san pablo & soluno) on Christmas Day and it's a shared tradition between me and my partner to eat Asian food on Xmas (a la "A Christmas Story"). We will be back many times I am sure.

I always try the Pad Thai at a new Thai restaurant just to get a baseline. It was one of the best I've had (and I used to go to Thai Tom in Seattle!) and my lady loved her meal as well.

On our second visit we got takeout, and I have to say it lost a bit of the same zest, so I suggest eating there. It's warm, peaceful, quiet, and the staff is great.

I'm on the run again - now to Richmond, CA, a little town just a bit north from glamorous Bay Area. As a first-time comer to this area, I rang a good Thai friend who went to Stanford for two full years, asking what she recommended around the area close to my hotel. The first and only thing she could think of is this place - Danang Krungthep. With all the steam I accumulated during the work hours, I know it's the time to hit myself with good Thai food and a bottle of Singha. DaNang is the forth largest city in Vietnam while KrungThep is the Thai name for Bangkok. So, we expected the balanced mix between Thai and Vietnamese menu from this place. (be careful of another place called Thep or KrungThep down the same street - it's not the same restaurant)

I was impressed with Danang Krungthep. The place, though not highly decorated, is spacious, clean, and well ventilated. At the time we arrived (7-ish Tuesday night), the place was less than half full. Parking is just in the convenient back lot. We were seated right away. The menu is huge. And, most importantly, they had the unlimited supply of Singha... Ahhh....

We spent about ten full minutes to go through the hundred-page menu. I decided without thinking to go with the pork leg (it's chinese/thai stew style with pickled cabbage). Seriously, most Thai restaurant just stick with perfecting their spices for stirred fry and sauces, and don't bother to buy the whole pig legs and make this rare dish from scratch. It comes with appropriate amount of skin. The meat is tender. Pickled cabbage is mellow. The dish and Singha just go really well together. We also had fried spring roll as appetizer. You know how good Vietnamese spring rolls are so it's not at all a disappointment.

Full five stars for great food, parking without hassle, good service, willingness to go above-and-beyond on food, and supply of Singha.

I guess I have 412 more items to try at this place.

First time to this place a friend and I were high and dry desperately trying for some thai to be delivered. We failed - this place doesn't deliver (at leaset on saturdays)  - but my oh my am I glad we cracked and got in the car to pick up.

We were about 15 mins late picking up the order but it was still piping hot properly packaged and smelled amazing.  We promptly paid and got home to our feast.  I highly recommend the pumpkin curry - slightly spicy and huge pieces of beef that meleted in your mouth with complex flavors.  Whole pieces of squash that were not mushy and an all around surprisng and amazing dish.

We also got the Pad See Eiw (im not spelling correctly and my counterpart would probably smack me upside the head right now BUT) the noodles were properly dry with moist chicken and greens that crunched.  Also as an estra side we got green beans and tofu - not the most impressive dish but the green beans were lovely covered in a chili paste and tofu was NOT soggy.  My friend likes HOT and was  disappointed in the level of spice so you may want to ask for EXTRA spicey.  eat up - im definitely returning.

cheers.
