R.I.P da bhang.
i will miss you even though we only knew each other for a few short weeks. you had the best chai latte in the history of chai lattes and even though your lighting was terrible after the sun went down, i still enjoyed studying with you. goodbye :(
Came here to study b/c they have free wifi. Only problem is that the lights are kinda dim and there were two airheads conversing right next to me.
Hmm...what did I learn from their conversation? Don't clean your fishbowl with Lysol or you will kill your fishes! Unbelievable.
Anyway, I was there for quite awhile so I sampled breakfast and lunch foods. The food was tasty but nothing out of this world. However, the waffles did look very good (didn't try it) so I will have to go back for that.
Later in the day, two moms came in with their kids. They kept telling their girls that what they were doing was inappropriate but didn't really do anything about it. It is NOT ok to let your kids literally run from one end to the other, screaming, laughing, and dancing. Sorry. Plus these kids were old enough to know that is not how you act in a public place. Gah!
I guess this would be a nice chill place to hang but for intensive studying purposes, it's not happening.
They do give a 10% student discount. :)
Bada Boom Bada Bang...I love da Bhang!
It feels like hanging out in your own home minus a bed and TV. I once fell asleep on one of the comfy couches in the back listening to soothing jazz music they play here.
There is free Wi-Fi, bibimbap, gourmet sandwiches, mouthwatering desserts, a great craft beer selection, a decent wine list, a nice variety of teas...the list goes on and on.
The coffee is dark and roasty & you do get the best value here for the size and quality. It comes in a 20oz soup mug at a low cost of $2. That's more than a Starbucks serving size at nearly half the price!
I hesitate to write a review of da Bhang because I know that the inevitable crowdedness of a cafe like this is directly proportional to the number of positive Yelp reviews it receives (think Grounded). But I'm simply too anal retentive not to include this in my Write Spot list...and I'm sure I'm going to pay for that bit of OCD in the end.
Da Bhang is, indeed, an ideal place to get some work done. It's a great alternative when Grounded is too packed, which is almost always. During the day, it doesn't get terribly crowded so you can easily score a spot on the cushioned bank seating. The space is clean, sleek and modern and doesn't feel cramped or cluttered like some other cafes. I appreciate that they didn't feel compelled to squeeze in as many tables as they could just to utilize the minimal space. I have been in larger cafes that feel smaller due to this.
There isn't a whole lot of natural lighting since it's lower than street level and goes deep rather than wide, but if you sit by the giant window in the front, you'll be fine. The lighting further in is actually pretty good, and probably helped by the light wall color.
The bathroom is well maintained and wheelchair-accessible, although the cafe itself isn't. They tend to play soothing jazz music that's not too distracting, although the whiff of waffles cooking is. I'd take that tempting scent any day over coffee brewing since I don't drink the stuff (as a bonus, you won't smell like coffee for the rest of the day). The turkey and brie sandwich I ordered seemed pricey at $7.50, but since they panini press it for you and include a salad, it's not a bad deal. And if you're a student, you can take advantage of a 10% discount.
The vibe changes a bit after 7pm, when the lights get dimmer and it starts to get busier with the dinner crowd. I wouldn't think to eat dinner here since they have more of a lunch menu (with the exception of bi bim bap), but I guess people like indulging in waffles in the evening. I was surprised to see how it went from writing spot to hot spot once the sun came down. But the vibe/crowd change lets me know that I've already spent several hours there and it's time to head home. Luckily, the staff is very friendly and doesn't seem to mind table squatters like myself.
In short, da Bhang is da bomb. (Sorry, I couldn't resist.)
Awesome space, free wifi, fresh waffles, delicious salads, and a great staff. I actually visited daBhang in March to talk about a publicity opportunity at a fashion show I worked for.
While wanting to promote the opening of his new cafe as much as possible, the manager Erik was also very concerned that "we got what we needed" out of the relationship. He offered free organic coffee coupons of an unprecedented quantity, 6 hand-crafted gift certificates of $50/$25, and 500 freshly-baked cookies for our show.
The cafe itself is minimalistic, clean, and comfortable. The staff is friendly and energetic. The other show directors are regulars at daBhang, calling it a "hidden gem" and "quiet refuge". The clientele is of regulars of all ages.
Whenever I stopped by, Erik always offered my guests and I free drinks and sweets. The coffee is fresh and the just-made waffles are delicious (check the photos!).
I rarely see Erik at the cafe anymore (off managing other ventures I assume), but I still stop by to grab a latte and a waffle to have some "me" time.
I had a bibimbap salad and an iced coffee, my friend had an iced tea and one of the pressed sandwiches. The non-dessert menu seemed limited, and not all that exciting.
The salad was good, but not great. The sandwich was good, but it's hard to mess up caprese salad in a pressed sandwich. Everything was good, nothing stood out.
Their drink list is bigger than most comparable places, and we didn't get to the waffles/dessert which looked like the best part. Our server was attentive without being pushy (which is important if you're going to lounge and enjoy free wifi). The seating was really comfortable.
I'd definitely come back, but not so much for the food.
My new favorite coffee place. Hands down.
Aesthetically perfect; sparce, dimly lit, appropriate contrast of light colors, cushioned seating with nicely colored throw pillows.... A real peaceful enclave in the midst of this crazy section of West 8th.
Now let's talk about food options shall we? Sandwiches are not only delicious but cleverly cut. The bibimbap bowl was huuuge and very good; spicy and supple. Homemade tea is delicious, as is the coffee, and to crown this lovely place, we got frozen yogurt with a small variety of toppings for you to feast on. Did you heard what I said? Delicious FROYO while doing my writing!!
...and free Wifi. You can smile now.
My great friend that lives on 8th Street found this place, but I recently reclaimed little DaBhang for myself. It is so rare in NYC to find a place with Free Wi-fi where the staff isn't forcing you to 'eat or drink your wi-fi time' or blazing you a death stare as the minutes pass without purchase.
Instead, DaBhang is a little slice of digital heaven. It's quiet and relaxing and there's no time limit on surfing the web or a four hour break when the internet is 'temporarily unavailable.' They themselves looked so relaxed and you often see them being greeted by friends of their own who have stopped by for a coffee.
Don't get me wrong,...this is no Mercury Dime and there's no Michelin star, but that's not what it's about. You come here to relax, sip coffee and pretend like your actually doing work (you know you're really on facebook or twitter doing something absolutely meaningless).
Hell, when there's a place that you can check your email and have the option of either a pecan waffle smothered in ice cream OR a bottle of vino ....you know it's good.
He is nervously waiting for his blind date at a table, sipping on coffee and trying not to spill it on himself. She arrives fashionably late, but because she's a lady of good background, she makes an elegant entrance, pausing ever so slightly by the door to glance around and pretend to look for him. He smiles awkwardly in her direction, and she moves towards him as they make eye contact. She sits down and smiles, apologizing briefly for her planned tardiness, and more awkwardness is exchanged. He politely offers her refreshments and orders for her. She smiles gracefully and thanks him. Just as the conversation begins----
Goal!
The Korean drama is changed to a football match. Such is life when you live amongst men.
Da Bhang is the type of place where you can be the star of your own Korean drama IRL!!! The only differences would be that the guy (or girl) sitting across from you would be only half as hot, the staff is much friendlier and amazingly generous, people would actually be eating, there's probably going to be a lot less tears and heart-wrenching plot twists involving life-threatening diseases, and the soundtrack is much better than the cheesy tunes of Korean dramas (it's only excellent jazz that's played here, including Charlie Parker, Thelonius Monk, Count Basie, and a whole crew of other jazz geniuses).
Aside from becoming an instant superstar, other advantages to this place is a clean, spacious area set with comfortable tables and chairs (padded). The free wifi is great, and there are enough outlets to keep your laptop well-charged. The service is fantastic, and the staff is quite friendly and generous. Come in a few times a week, and they'll really take care of you as if you were there own... or not, but you get the idea. The loo is very clean and well-maintained on a daily basis and the best -- Williams Sonoma handsoap and lotion!
The well-edited menu consists of sandwiches (all are under $10 and the tuna melt is quite good) and a kickass bowl of bibimbop (which comes in a huge bowl full of veggies, and gochujang, or Korean red pepper paste, is available in ample quantities upon request for only $8.50). The desserts look really good, notably the chocolate mousse dome cake and the layered carrot cake, but I've not personally had any. There's a variety of coffees and teas, including their own special blend of Espresso that's quite tasty (see photo) and the Almond Joy (almond coffee topped with coconut shavings) has become a favourite already. The Italian sodas are Monin (significantly less sweeter and higher quality than Torani) and highly recommended as a coffee alternative. There's even kro-yo (Korean frozen yogurt) with toppings!
Why go to certain other chain locations when such wonderful places exist in the city is beyond me.
Korean Coffeehouse with:
Good Food
Good Prices
Live Music
Comfy Chairs
Beer and Wine license is in the works.
I may just move in.
Really cool, relaxing place. Whatever jazz CD was playing, I want to buy it.
The coffee was great. The staff is crazy friendly. The frozen yogurt was delicious and tangy. Their chocolate desserts looked incredible too.
Try putting their honey (which is free for teas etc) on the yogurt. It hardens up like caramel and tastes delicious.
Definitely check this place out.
Ths is my favorite place to grab a cup of tea and use my laptop. They also have very good shaved ice and the hours are great. Its a great space with a little bit of outdoor seating. The staff is really nice as well.
Definitely check this place out.
Rave reviews referencing the free wi-fi, (gasp!) cleanliness, good food and jazz music mandate reeled me in on a panic-ridden Saturday (hey, that's today) when I have so many exams to grade it isn't funny, need to be focused (read: not home), yet able to partake of a bit of nourishment (increasingly difficult in the public arena).
Compared to so many of its competitors, s'clean indeed. But I think that may in large part be par for the I'm Still Relatively New To the Area course. That said, the lighting and bright tones on the walls make it harder to hide little things one might miss at dimmer, "charmingly seasoned" and thus deceptively not-too dingy places. So, for now, kudos. A relatively undefiled delight in this regard. I might actually use this restroom before I leave. Not just hand-washing!
Else...the wi-fi is bhangin'! The music is awesome--no icky, two-chord drivel, no self-indulgent sangin'...outlets easily accessible. And hey, it's off the A-line.
It feels a bit more like a 9-5 luncheonette than a coffeeshop per se. Not a problem. That's just me trying to put my finger precisely on the architectural vibrations I'm picking up.
I ate. And I probably shouldn't have because, well, it just rarely works at a restaurant that doesn't cater specifically to vegetarians, but I was starving and couldn't afford an east side detour, sooo....that being said, they (nice guys) did attempt to accommodate some tweaking of a Korean culinary classic, which might have been more successful had the instructions actually been entirely followed. But digressing, I think most people would have themselves a fine little meal and a grand, relaxing time (I'm actually almost too relaxed to work). If you do frozen yogurt, smoothies, the like--desserts! that's what they're called--based on a visual scan, this must be The Place. And that's no naive melody.
And, yah, I'll be back.
The look...
Simple and graceful. A real Scandinavian feel right down to the inlaid-stone in concrete where you stand, its teak flooring where you sit and its outdoor teak chairs and stream lined contemporary furniture.
The Menu. Spars but delicious blend of Walfeels (banila pecan and Chocolate ranging from 5.79-6.25 for the basic and 8.50-9.00 for the deluxe. Sandwiches from 7.70 8.50 and salads from 7-8-9 and 11 bones, shaved ice 7-8.00 and smoothies and milk shakes from 7-6 bucks.
As of this writing, I have not visited the bathrooms yet.
OH YAH... did I mention they serve wine and beer?
and also, they also have art on the walls over their seeweed wrap walls lit by their asian inspired paper lamps in the back and their single bulb lamps in the front.
I could do without the Bob Dillan folksy music (thats more meant for coffee houses), I would describe this more of a Condo Cafe ( not loft, just condo ).
Oh yeah... they have you favorite coffees and italian sodas too!
I just ordered a smoothie. The guy behind the counter made it to his liking but he got a little disconcerted when I asked him to put walnuts in it. He didn't have any, so he used pecans.
This makes me wonder if they dropped them on the floor or something for that extra earthy flavor.
I'd been meaning to check this place out for a while. Everyone is right about the space- it's nice- not too crowded, clean, and the manager is really friendly. I came for lunch and ordered the bi bim bop- they had a veggie version with tofu- it was big and healthy though a little pricey at $10. If things had stopped there this would have been a 5 star experience.
But halfway through my studying, I decided I wanted a drink. I ordered a steamed milk. Right after I ordered it, I realized I forgot to order a skim. I asked the barista whether I could get it skim, to which she replied, "I've already put the milk in the steamer." I really didn't want to drink a glass of whole milk, so I asked her again if I could still get the steamer skim because I wouldn't drink it whole. To which she replied again, "No, I've already steamed it." This upset me because (a) the steamer was $4 (w/ tax and tip). A glass of milk with vanilla syrup in it is SO not worth $4 so why the big deal replacing it? and (b) on principle, restaurants should not (and in most cases do not) serve food they know customers will be unhappy with. I understand I made a mistake of not ordering right to begin with, but I don't know any coffeeshop- infamous Starbucks included- that would not have replaced the drink on the basis of customer service.
I sat back down with the drink I did not want in front of me and was so upset I could not study anymore. I know, I know- it's not a big deal, but times are hard and the fact that I had to throw $4 away for a glass of milk that I didn't want (after I had already spent $10 at the place) pissed me off. I am not coming back on principle! Too bad, though, because I did want to try the waffles.
My friends came in here late at night because we felt like getting shaved ice and this place was still open. It's nice and cozy with friendly staff and good shaved ice and ice cream. It's recommended for small groups to chill and chat after dinner =)
Also good for waffles =)
I thought it was okay. They have free wi-fi. It is like in the basement and kind of relaxing. They have a good selection of beers. I dont know-just okay. Black and white photos on the walls.
one day.. Jaxster and I were walking around Greenwich Village and looking for food before a big party we were going to.. cute boy was asking us if we wanted to try their FREE organic coffee for pre-opening promotion.. hell ya! the word, 'FREE', always works yo! since then, been da Bhang numerous times.. relaxing, comfortable, cozy, warm etc..
the name, da Bhang, is 'Old Korean style Cafe' in Korean.. apparently, this place is SO naturally modern-stylish with all of delicious Jazz music!
they serve Fresh Organic Coffee (smooth as silk), Waffle (get Deluxe - 3 toppings + whip cream + ice cream!! worth it!!), Sandwiches (Ham & Swiss Cheese is my favorite so far), small Tart & Cake, Frozen Yogurt (little bit slush type) and even Bi bib bob (believe me, it's much better than creepy other village Korean places).. on top of everything, FREE Wi-Fi!
sometimes, the owner, Eric, gives FREE coffee..
yes.. 'FREE' again!
very clean modern decor. Fabulous waffles, I had mine plain with just a scooch of cinnamon sprinkled on it. Heaven.
Went with a friend on a Monday night because some musicians she met the previous day were performing here. I had vanilla waffles with blueberries that came with a whipped cream smiley face. She had chocolate waffles. They were grilled to a perfect crispness and were delicious. I also had a side of frozen yogurt with my waffles (the owner didn't recommend it, but I insisted). The froyo follows on the Pinkberry trend but is less smooth. I love the modern, but slightly rustic decor of this place. I didn't check out the bathroom, but heard it's pretty nice as well. Service is great and the owner, Eric, is really nice. He says they are planning to add more food in the future - a plus.
Great cafe in a great place. The owners are very kind. The coffee is remarkably good, and every time I experiment with other things on the menu it has been great (I recommend the chai latte).
