Wow all these bad reviews, Im shocked. I live less than 5 minutes away (literally) so I've been coming here for a while. The food is great, I've tried a variety of dishes with no complaints. I have to disagree with the fellow who said everything tastes like it had previously been frozen.. just because something doesn't live up to your specific standards does not mean it is of bad quality. The bread is always fresh& warm and the dishes are flavorful. The thing I frequently order is their Dparma salad, it is absolutely mouth watering delicious with their raspberry vinaigrette. The chicken it is topped with is unbelievably crispy and perfect. Hands down best salad in Winthrop. For dessert I get their coconut sorbet which is marvelous & served in a coconut shell. Check out their menu on the website and give it a try. It's a warm, candle lit, cozy atmosphere brimming with people who seem to be enjoying themselves. It's BYOB so thats pretty cool also. I must say I am slightly bummed out for they don't do deliveries. Wah.

This place is nothing to write home about, took my grandmother here once and right off the bat she complained she could not read the menu because it was so freakin dark in there. (I could barely either)
The food was OK, haven't been here in about a year and don't feel the need to step back in again. -

We went to D'Parma after waiting an hour to get into Rosetti's a couple blocks away.
Rosetti's has always been a favorite in Winthrop with delicious food. I had never been to D'Parma before, but some people I was with had eaten there.
It was great. Also a BYOB (like Rosetti's - which is good!), and the food is also very good. I would say that Rosetti's is just a tad better than D'Parma in terms of food quality, but I would eat at either restaurant ANY day.
Started my meal with a salad and I enjoyed the Shrimp Grill over baby spinach, which was delicious. Several others at my table enjoyed the Fruitti D'Mare Pasta and couldn't say enough about it.
I'll definitely be back to D'Parma! :-) -

Ordinary is a good word to describe the food here. The menu options are ordinary, the food tastes, and is presented, in an ordinary way.
The bread is almost tasteless. My dish was gnocchi. The tomato sauce was tasty, but the gnocchi themselves were bland and tasted old. My boyfriend ordered a pasta dish with seafood on top. There was a decent amount of assorted seafood on the plate, however, the mussels tasted bad, and there's no excuse for that.
The place itself is cute and has a cozy ambiance. I like how it is a small, locally run restaurant. But the food is just too below average to bother going there. -

D'Parma in a word... gross.
This is a wonder-bread-on-the-table type of place. The cream sauces tasted fresh... from the can. Actually, everything tasted like it was a reheated TV dinner. But fortunately we had plenty of time to savor it, because it took the waitress forever to notice us in the half-empty place.
The main appeal of this place, and Winthrop in general, is BYOB so you can bring a nice wine (or buy one from across the street). So you'd think the waitress would at least know how to work a corkscrew. As she was mangling a cork, at least she was nice enough to just put it down and let me open it.
A place to avoid. Head do Alia's down the street. -

I know the reviews are all over the place, and there's a good reason.
This is a pretty polarizing establishment.
I should say, before my wife and I moved in together she lived very close to this place, so we're a bit more biased than others.
This place is a family style Italian restaurant. You're not going to find 4 or 5 star fare here.
The portions are large, the food is heavy and the decor is...eclectic at best. Lots of old wood, horsehair plaster and a giant tree growing in the middle of the place.
When I went, I got an Italian sub- which came on toasted bread, which puzzled me. I also asked for hot peppers and they gave me sweet banana peppers. Despite this, it was pretty delicious. I have had their risotto in the past and liked it very much.
The service wasn't much to speak of, with long pauses and lack of post-meal delivery check in.
As with anyplace in Winthrop, this place is dry, so BYOB. Not sure if there is a corking fee.
So, if you're looking for down-home style over the top Italian where the locals eat, this is your place. On a weekend night, this place is packed to the brim with laughing people with full bellies, it's that kind of place.
If you're looking for an upscale or authentic experience, or somewhere to bring a date for a more romantic atmosphere, I say keep walking. -

I feel a moral imperative to bring down D'Parma's rating. How mean does that sound?
Seriously, I went there a number of years ago and vaguely remember it being pretty good. Now its just poop on a plate. Chrissy is wrong, I had the risotto, gnot the gnocchi. They only way to describe it is undercooked rice in ketchup. Not Heinz either. Crappy ketchup. Maybe even catsup.
And the Waitress acted all offended that we didn't like it.
BTW, my vote for it not being good for kids is not a reflection of D'Parma's ambiance or formality. It's because no child should be exposed to food like this in their formative years. -

D'Parma - what are you doing to me?? You were my absolute FAVORITE Italian place for miles and miles around (yes, even taking into account the places in the North End - this place was just awesome in their prices and the close proximity to my house, and just being so spot-on!).
And yet... upon my last visit I almost left in tears.
My ziti arabiata was lacking the signature basil leaves (?? - it's only garnishes are jalapenos and basil leaves! When you take way the basil it completely throws off the flavor of the dish!), and yet - the ziti was also horribly over cooked and MUSHY. :(
And... my mother's chicken marsala was so sweet it proved to be inedible. We NEVER send back food. EVER. I've worked in restaurants for YEARS, sending back food is an absolute insult to the chef! And yet... we had to send this dish back. It was inedible! And our otherwise helpful waitress did argue with us about how marsala should taste for a few minutes before taking it back.
Maybe it was just an off day? But it just seems like the quality of the meals have plummeted... which makes me unbelievably sad, and it also made me look SO BAD in front of my visiting from overseas mom, after I promised her an amazing Italian meal.
I still hold out hope for you D'Parma... I do. But it will be a long time before I convince myself to make a return trip. :(Listed in: Eating at the Entrance to the…

not quite sure about this place....heard a lot about it....but was disappointed.....my friend ordered chicken, Broccoli & Ziti and was pleased..I ordered my standby Veal Parm w/ lingune......it was awful....the veal was a very low grade if it wasn't a composite patty. Portions were decent, but not a lot. The prices were on the low side. Maybe go back to better places. But is has it's place. BYOB, which has a plus side.

If you're a fan of cream sauce, this is the restaurant for you - they put it on EVERYTHING. The stuffed mushrooms, the risotto, and my porcini ravioli was swimming in it. Now, don't get me wrong - I like to ignore medical science and enjoy a nice cream sauce every now and then, but for a moment there I was wondering if I needed to bring a defibrillator.
Otherwise, I think D'Parma is your stereotypical townie Italian restaurant. The food is mediocre, the atmosphere is run of the mill, and the wait staff is ordinary. If you're nearby and hungry for Italian, this is the place to go. But it's certainly not a destination restaurant.
Its only outstanding feature is that it's a BYOB restaurant. For a $3 corkage fee you can bring your own bottle of wine - a great way to make a nice dinner much more affordable. But if you can, bring your own wine glasses too, otherwise you're drinking out of water glasses, and that just feels silly. -

Their chicken broccoli ziti is to die for. My mom and I used to go here at least once a month when we lived in Winthrop. My friends and I also used to get take out for lunch. It's BYOB, but the food and atmosphere is unbelievable.

D'Parma prides itself on using fresh, organic ingredients, and while many other Italian restaurants make this claim, the freshness of the meals here really stands out. From the porcini ravioli to the chicken risotto, the meals at D'Parma make one wonder if this is how the food tastes in Italy. Indeed, this is about as far from "Americanized" Italian food as you can get. One note: D'Parma is BYOB, so if you want wine or beer, bring it with you!
If the food isn't enough to lure you to D'Parma, consider the atmosphere; the two rooms are dark and cozy, and would not be out of place at a trattoria in the Italian countryside. While the tables are a bit close together (effectively squelching quiet conversation), it is precisely this kind of atmosphere that gives D'Parma a comfortable communal feel. Adding to this is the fact that most people who come here seem to be from the local neighborhood; everyone does seem to know everyone else at D'Parma.
Winthrop is not an easy place to get to (something that it has in common with Logan Airport), but the new Ted Williams tunnel has made it a bit less out of the way. Whether you find yourself leaving the airport with hunger pangs or just feel like taking a drive to a forgotten little section of the Boston area, it would definitely be worth your while to head over to D'Parma.
Thanks to Nancy K who found this hidden BYOB gem.

Still good food and fun place to go! Tonight I got the frutti di mare which was packed full of mussels, exactly what I was hoping. A heaping pile of warm crusty bread was a perfect addition to the cold night (and many jugs..yes jugs of wine).
The service was quick and friendly, and there was julienned basil atop the dish (for those of you who claim they didnt have a shred of herb). Prices have gone up a lot, and hopefully they see that they should go back down soemtime, but overall its the same 4 star experience for me.Listed in: The Throp (Winthrop)

I've been to D'Parma's a few times since I "discovered" Winthrop and each time, it's been excellent. The restaurant space itself is small, so getting a table on a weekend can take a little time, but the staff are friendly. It's a BYOB environment, with a conveniently-located liquor store across the street, but overall it doesn't tend to get rowdy.
The first time, some friends and I ordered food for take out. I had the house special risotto with sundried tomatoes in a light vodka sauce. It was excellent. Another time, I ordered a chicken parm meal. The chicken parm was cooked perfectly, sometimes places overcook it and it gets dry around the edges. The last time I was there, about two weeks ago, I ordered a tortellini soup in broth, which was a little salty for me, and a special order of fried chicken ravioli in a goat cheese sauce. The stuffed mushrooms (with pancetta) smothered in a creamy alfredo sauce is amazing, and the mushroom ravioli are good too. -

In a town with so very little to offer in terms of a sit down, delicious meal, D'Parma in Winthrop is a hidden gem. Well worth a drive in for those in the surrounding towns craving a true North End Italian restaurant without having to battle the authentic North End parking crisis.
If you like shellfish, then you'll find perfection in the Dimare Risotto. The shell fish is always cooked just right and as long as you remember to stop off at the local liquor store and grab yourself a bottle of red wine to accompany your meal, ($3 corking fee), your meal couldn't be more perfect.
With this in mind, the decor is homey - but can get a bit dark. Hopefully they invest in some table lamps or tea lights. Yet, even with the relative darkness of the restaurant... or the army of baskets hanging all over the ceiling... this place is a hit every time. -

"What was I thinking" I pondered this after leaving this unique place. A week ago I had just enjoyed the best marsala ever at one of their competitors and then i ordered it here and it did not measure up. I mean, don't get me wrong, it was a damn good chicken marsala, just not as good as the competition.
The food was excellent, far better than most other Italian places. I needed to try this place out because my friends always recommend. I am glad I did. The dining room resembles a small-scale Rainforest Cafe (Burlington Mall) and the staff is very nice!
Highly recommended!Listed in: My Neighborhood

I moved within walking distance of D'Parma not long ago and it quickly became our go-to Italian place. BYOB is nice and I personally like the slightly frigid air conditioning for summertime dine-in. I've had several meals that I found flavorful and fulfilling. I've had generally fair to positive experiences in terms of service. Take-out has been consistent, too. Prices seem fair, although I was a little put off that the prices are almost never what is printed on the menus.
I've enjoyed their eggplant parm and mushroom rizotto quite a bit. I agree with the reviewer who said everything here swims in cream sauce. I'm actually a fan of their sauces, but I do stress it's not for everyone, especially if you prefer your pesto or carbonara more to the oily side than heavy/creamy. Frutti demare was a tasty, solid meal, but not epic. Gnocchi was good.
I think my initial flare for the place has fizzled a bit after countless dine-in experiences. Not that I've ever had a bad experience here. This was a no-brainer 5-star favorite place after my first couple visits, but I'm finding myself less impressed with each new item I try and the consistently underwhelming staff. -

I have been going to D'Parma pretty much since it opened and it has always satisfied. Pretty much everything on the menu was great but up until the last 6-12 month I have noticed a quick decline in quality, attention to detail and poor pricing.
The last three visits have been pretty upsetting. Chicken dishes were the chicken breast was pounded so thin we though it was veal yet oddly they have mixed up veal and chicken dishes before. I used to love the Frutti D'Mare but after getting a plate of rotten mussels and clams it has turned me off the dish forever and took me a month to even think about going back. The last visit I ordered one of the specials which was baked ziti with sausage for $15.95 ... boy did I get ripped off. Not only was it not baked ziti but the sauce has a metallic taste to it. So for $15.95 I received a handful of ziti, bad sauce and some melted chees on top.
Sadly I have to firmly NOT RECOMMEND this place ... they have dropped the ball too many times for me to hand over my green to them. -

D'Parma's is a nice find in a town like Winthrop. It's a little out of the way if you don't live in town, but it's worth the trip.
No parking lot, but this is Winthrop so you shouldn't have to drive far to find a spot. The restaurant it self consists of two rooms, the front room where the kitchen and the take out counter are, and the back room which is about the same size as the front room, but there is a little more space. Tons of baskets hang from the ceiling, some plants scattered around and it can be quite dark inside at night. D'Parma's is BYOB. There is a small Package (liquor) Store across the street called Thompson's. They are ok for Beer, but their wine list is lacking.
Now the best part: The Food. The food is outstanding! The Chicken Saltimbocca is amazing. One of my favorite meals hands down. They also serve it with Veal if you so are inclined. The Stuffed Mushrooms as appetizers should not be missed. Whatever is the sauce they pour over the Mushrooms is mouthwatering, it complements the fresh basel so well. Their salad dressing is made in house and is a nice surprise. Ask for it when you get a salad.
D'Parma's is worth the trip, and when the check comes I think you will be mildly surprised at how much food you ate and how good it was, for how little you spent. -

Great Italian and BYO. Great combo. Why does Winthrop have so many BYO's?
The Chicken Saltimbocca is outstanding - Alfredo sauce, not wine, but excellent none the less. -

Based on one recent visit here, I would gladly return. D'Parma is a classic neighborhood Italian restaurant that isn't stuffy or formal. This isn't where you go for classic gourmet authentic regional Italian food. This is the type of place where you go for well-executed Italian-American classics, with a few surprises thrown in on the menu.
It is the type of place where the chicken parm is good (I know, I tried it), the pasta is plentiful, and the sauce is delicious. No, it probably doesn't come from a local organic farm where the tomatoes were hand-picked, but it is still satisfying and makes you smile. I know several people who have been there on several occasions and haven't had a bad meal.
Being BYOB, it makes for a great deal - the prices are reasonable, you get a plentiful serving of quality Italian grub, and you can choose the wine you want from the liquor store across the street. Perfect! -

Went here first time Saturday. When you first walk in you get the feel of loud, suburbian dive, but then...by far and large one of the best Italian food I've had in a long time and and most excellent service. The salmon/chevre bruschetta, antipasto plate were incredible and all authentic. I can't compliment trout w puttanesca sauce enough. Delicious! All the ingredients are crafted together to create these tasty dishes, accompanied with warm crust bread. My boyfriend had veal Marsala which was good, too. Quantty of side pasta was on the small. However, we will definitely be going back to try the other dishes! I would recommend this restaurant to all my family and friends. I wish them well on their success and they've just earned themselves two loyal customers.

I am really confused. How did this place end up with so many stars? After the horrid Antonia's experience, we took a ride up the road to Winthrop and stopped at D'Parma. We had been there once before, many moons ago, and we couldn't remember how we liked it. So we took a chance. I will regret that meal forever...
Let me start with a couple OK things...
1) It's BYOB. I kind of like that. It's cheaper and you get to drink what you actually want.
2) There's a bunch of weaved baskets all over the ceiling. It's a nice effect.
And that's where the good stuff ends.
We ordered the eggplant rolls to start. Mushy and flavorless.
Waitress brought us over a basket of bread. I tore a piece in half to find a very long blond hair in the middle. (insert retching noises here.)
John got the gnocchi which was undercooked and just bland.
I got some linguine with this creamy sauce and chicken. BLAH. Gross. I took one bite and I could feel it on it's way to my stomach where it sat like a rock. No flavor. Just a bunch of creamy noodles in a bowl. I couldn't eat it.
Oh, but here's the best part!
The waitress FINALLY came over to check on us and we said we were ready for the check. She took one look our plates and said,"You didn't like the food?" And I said, "In all honesty, no." That's when she got mad. She said," why didn't you tell me that when I came over to check on you the first time?"
That's when I got mad. She never came over to check on us a first time! She barely paid any attention to us at all!
Needless to say, we didn't order dessert. In fact, we went to the local grocery store and bought ourselves dinner and dessert. -

I used to like coming here for dinner with friends - the place is friendly, the food is ok - but then one of the waitresses moved into my apartment building and caused quite a havoc with all her parties - the police were always there etc. and she was thrown out - I went for dinner once after and my meal was sabotaged - I don't know what they did to it but I didn't eat it - the swordfish I ordered was like cat food --- it has been 5 or 6 years and I'm still afraid to go back

This is yet another GREAT BYOB establishment. When you walk in, it's very warm, cozy and feels like home. There's a wide variety of salads, entrees and pastas. Upon arrival, you are greeted with warm slightly toasted bread, and the oil is infused with something rather tasty too (maybe crushed red pepper??)I had the grilled shrimp entree which was rather tasty. It started out with a little salad (not way too much, but not too little) with Italian dressing, then the entree came with marinated shrimp (medium sized) and raw spinach with balsamic vinegar atop. The main entree is also accompanied by your choice of fettuccine, ziti or linguine. It was all pretty tasty. Only down fall is that the pop is by the can, and it's 1.50/can.

D'Parma's has excellent Itallian sandwiches -- far better than what you can get in the North End -- and the prices are excellent. $5 for a sandwich with fresh-sliced prosciutto and mozzarella is a steal. The people at the counter are really nice on top of it so it's a pleasure going there for take-out.
Dinner is good and very reasonable also. Lobster ravioli is so-so with a heavy breacrumb filling and too much cream sauce but a lot of the other choices are very, very good. Again, the people there are super-friendly, the atmosphere is relaxing, and the prices can't be beat.
Can't go wrong with D'Parmas. -
Review from Julia F.
EDIT:
I think they have a new chef/cook, or something. The last time I was here, just about a week ago - the food was dredful! There was nothing redeeming about the meal. I tried the previously really good "D'parma Salad" it was no good. I tried my sister's 4 cheese gnocchi, not good. I tried my other sister's special of the day pasta dish. It too was salty and not very good. All the pasta seemed overcooked and the sauces were not what they should have been.

I adore this place for many reasons, some of which shall follow:
1) It's a short walk from my Grandma's house. When we are having any sort of family gathering, this is the place we wanna be. It can fit all (sometimes 15 people) of us at one table.
2) It's a BYOB type-a-joint. I love that. Lots and lots of love for that reason. They also don't rush you to get out of there at all, so if you want to sip on your wine and chat (as my family does) it's cool - stay a while.
3) The food is REALLY GOOD. (Perhaps I should have named this reason number one?) Don't fill up on the bread and oil when you get there, you will have a hard time finishing your meal if you do! I have had several dishes from here, usually ordering something new and my sisters and I all share. They have amazing salads and pasta dishes that are not only huge, but really good.
4) If you tell them it's your birthday they bring you a nice slice of Tiramisu and have this recording of the most embarrassing song ever. It's amazing, you might want to say it's your birthday just to check it out... -

A friend of mine chose to go D' Parma's for his birthday recalling the Lobster Ravioli he used to get there with fondness, as we've been coming here for 5 years we have a sense of what to expect. We hunt online for coupons and make sure to call ahead and confirmed with the restaurant if they accepted it. The gentlemen who answered assured us that they would.
We are seated at a table next to a icy cold wall with a draft and behind an espresso machine to boot. The waitress has the appearance of a stand in for the movie Blade-Runner and an attitude to match. We tell her of the coupon and she instantly contested it's validity to us but said she would have to call the manager at the Boston location to see as there was no manager on staff at ALL! (this is unheard of to me btw.) She comes back from the phone call and says that "you spoke to a dishwasher who shouldn't have said that and no they will not accept it." We decide to stay and then order the Eggplant Rolls that were mushy and cold, and a very interesting version of stuffed mushrooms. Then comes the en trees. The lobster raviolis were sized a mere quarter of what they used to be, not only that they were the frozen, pre-made kind with the fake coloring in a rather thick looking cream sauce. The chicken parm was doused in a heap of crushed tomatoes with a very tinny taste to them and not a strip of basil or chunk of garlic in it. The chicken marsala was so full of brown sugar and hard muchrooms that we thought we got the wrong dish. And my chicken broccoli ziti was covered in an insipid gelatinous cream sauce with again not a strip of herb. Meanwhile as we get a load of the array the unfriendly waitress put in front of us, a flock of the new Brazilian team was viewing us from the archway to the b.o.h. I get her attention and say that this food was inedible and then I was accused of trying to get a free meal and that because my friend had eaten some of his ravioli that he enjoyed it. I then asked for the manager and she responded "there is no manager here tonight." I reply. "get me a head chef, shift sup. anyone?" "no... I can get you the phone number for the manager." "you do that" I said. We wait 5 min and she decided to just make the call for me. She then comes back and said she spoke with the mang. and they will now accept the voucher for 25$ off! " I say oh no, 3 people didn't touch their food. We ate your appitizers and they were cold." She says" why didn't you say anything then, huh? Don't take it out on me because you didn't like your meal. Look, he ate the raviolis!" Which were still more than half there on the plate.
My intention then was to only pay for the apps. because we ate them crappy things at least.
It went back and forth like that for several minutes until a male waiter came and just charged us for the appetizers like we had asked for.
This was hands down the worst dinner I ever had with the most rude and lazy staff housed in a freezing cold, uninsulated, relic box of a structure decorated with raw lattice, dusty silk flowers and an out of place bamboo fountain. There's a reason they keep it so dark in there. so you don't notice the slack and all the tin cans they had to open!
PS: and the parking is horrible for this place. -

Probably the best chicken parm I've ever had the pleasure of eating. The chicken was moist, flavorful, and topped with just the right amount of mozerella and tomato sauce. Served with a side salad and a small bown of ziti, all for $11? Hard to believe but it's true. My friend got the eggplant, also wonderful. Not bitter or filled with seeds, just perfect. BYOB, there's a liquor store just across the street if you need anything.

Okay here's the deal on this place. The food is average, not bad, not great. Should you live close by and want consistently average food then this place will do. Should you live more than 20 minutes away there is absolutely no need to go here. The only really negative thing I've noticed here is that its pretty much Winthrop locals. You know in those old west movies when Clint Eastwood walks into a bar then the music stops and everybody looks at him? Very similar event happed to me when I walked in. You would have thought I was wearing a clown suit, juggling 3 french breads with whale cum shooting outta my ears by the looks I got when I walked in here. Note to Winthrop: Not everybody wears Affliction shirts to dinner. Also the dining area is very small. Should you order a LARGE pizza you probably would have to eat it outside!!!!!!!

D'Parma is everything you'd want from a neighborhood Italian restaurant: consistently good food (especially the Italian 'classics'), an unpretentious and convivial atmosphere, and a BYOB policy that keeps your tab low.
It's not gourmet Italian and some things could stand improvement (e.g., the house salad of iceberg lettuce, hothouse tomatoes, and a sharp vinegary dressing) but most dishes are fantastic (I like the linguini with seafood, the risotto, and the carbonara). Nice atmosphere ... lights a bit too low for my taste ... tacky-yet-fun decor.
Skip the dessert and instead, go across the street for some soft-serve and a walk on the beach! -

The atmosphere is great, a bit too dark but very cozy. The food-I've never been that impressed, my last visit I had the risotto and it was B.A.D, tasted like dry rice, it was NOT risotto. Cafe Rosetti's down the street beats this by a million! The atmosphere isn't as nice but the food is far superior.

I went to D'Parma a couple of weeks ago after reading some reviews here at Yelp and I am glad I went. First off, the bread and olive oil is excellent, but be careful not to fill up on it--you want to leave plenty of room. Simply put, it was the best Italian meal I've had in a while. I went simple and had the meatballs and ziti and my friend had the swordfish (piazza?) with red sauce and both were superb. You might say that it is hard to screw up meatballs and sauce, and to a certain extent, this is true--but I defy you to find better! I thought the idea of red sauce on swordfish was weird--but it was very tasty! Like many places in Winthrop, if you want wine or beer with your meal you must bring your own, as it is BYOB. The service was friendly, attentive and infromative. The atmosphere cozy and a bit no frills. There is an open kitchen, so if you get the right table, you can watch your meal being prepared. There is a main dining area with a big fish tank and a side room that handles take out and has a few more tables. The prices are reasonable--most entrees around $15 ( but be aware, if you check out their website, the prices listed are outdated) I went early on a saturday afternoon, and I was put off at first, because the place was empty, but within 15 minutes tables were filling up with a mix of couples, families, and old biddies. I am pretty sure that the sous chef was cooking, so I can only assume that when the Chef is in, things can only get better so I am going there tonight.
