Rustic and cozy, this lovely Sardinian restaurant serves some hearty and tasty food in a warm setting.

The house red is totally decent, and for $25 for a large carafe it is a great deal.

Hanging out there, in the cozy back room lit with tapered candles and reclining against the pillowed banquette, all I want to eat is carbs carbs carbs (and cheese, yes, cheese).  The pastas are all reliable,  the cheeses all excellent and the pistachio pesto crostini is rich, satisfying and uniquely delicious.  The other night they had a salad special of seared duck over arugula, pistachios, strawberries and balsamic, which was great and helped balance the heavier fare.  The cauliflower side dish was disappointing.

Highly recommended, extremely romantic, great staff, laid back and tasty.

Been here twice now .. both times we had excellent experiences.

If you enjoy a place that is warm and inviting, friendly and authentic feeling, with staff to please and food to pleasure then this place is for you.

The food is tapas style with an italian influence.  Cheese, meats and pastas are all delicious .. and a solid wine selection to boot.

Make sure to ask for the specials, on the second visit I was looking forward to one of the other meals I'd spotted the last time but took the special garganelli instead - wow .. full of flavor!

Great local joint without the hype but plenty of atmosphere.

DOC has always been one of my favorite restaurants to go to, you feel like your in italy. I'm married, but it's a great date spot, very low key. They have the best wines and awesome cheeses.

Solid Italian restaurant. Love the rustic, intimate, authentic, and cozy atmosphere. Great spot for a date (very romantic), but they do have room for large parties as well. The waitstaff is warm & definitely Italian which I always appreciate. I mostly enjoyed the atmosphere, wine, appetizers, and tiramisu as my entree wasn't too great (lasagna). Definitely will be back.

A pretty big disappointment.    Pleasant, attentive, informed service and a reasonably rustic and comfortable room, yes, but truly lousy food.

The olives tasted canned, the blue cheese on the salad was cheap and acidic (in an unpleasant, poorly balanced way) and my mozzarella and tomato panini was really, really bland.

The last straw was the hazelnut "gelato."  Tasted like A&P brand, or something.  My guess is a LOT of the stuff they serve comes from one of those Cisco "food service" providers.  Put it this way: there's a pretty big difference between truly good food and not good food, and virtually everything that made its way across our table was dreadfully subpar.

The wine? We were a little cheap--a $38 bottle of Vermentino, which was serviceable, but nothing more than that.  There are some insanely ritzy bottles on the list, so I'm certain you can do much better, if you're willing to spend for it.

A perfect date spot.  Rustic wooden tables, low lighting, heavily accented Sardinian owners and wine by the carafe.  Definitely not a place to come have a big birthday party or for beers with a big crew.  But it is what it is and you probably can't find a more laid back, quiet, romantic bar on the north side.

As a side note, I thought that I left a bag there and came back the next morning.  The owners looked everywhere and appeared geniunely concerned.  They called the people who were working the previous night all to no avail.  About an hour later, they called me saying that they had looked through the surveillance tapes and confirmed that I didn't have a bag with me when I walked in.  So I called the place I was previously and sure enough they had it.  I was really impressed with their concern and effort.  So the owners' generosity and care for their customers make me even happier to give this place a good review.

DOC executes the rustic, candlelit charcuterie shtick with considerable warmth (thanks to flaskos and carafes-) and affordable grace (-of nice Beginner Reds). Light Italian dinner snacks like paninis, crostini, salads and soups (~$10) may be enjoyed in spacious dining area, but as a postprandial destination, DOC is one helluva wine bar.

Snag a table for two and a $30 bottle; lean intensely into good conversation as the wax tears fall from the tall, lone light between you and your companion. Drink liberally; reflect upon life, love and the future. Temper tipples with an impromptu cheese platter, delivered on thick cuts of thick-crust bread.

Share final secrets and swigs as the hour grows late and the candle dwindles. Teeter out, and smoke a cigarette. Rudely recollect that you're in Williamsburg, and not Chianti, scowl, get over it, and go home.

Found this place by happy accident last evening.    We are HUGE fans of the DOC wine shop across the street from our temp digs in Brooklyn.   They are both excellent examples of well run, owner occupied establishments.   Extensive wine selection which we left up to the owner on premises that evening.    Plates were small but perfectly prepared.  We shared  white anchovies on bruschetta, perfectly balanced tart to oil.  My husband went on to the grilled scallops which came on a bed of the most perfectly cooked baby pea shoots that we thought we might have been transported to Chez Panisse!    I had a Sicilian meat pasta which was divine.   Only regret was that our table was next to a very noisy one but such is life.   This will be a regular haunt.

ps: while Yelp site says no cards they do take AmX so this should be updated

Came here with a date, after a few glasses of wine, on the recommendation of a bartender who works nearby. The ambience is nice, very European and for a few moments you forget where you are. It's a pure date place, so I wouldn't come here with the boys ever. The service was friendly, but super slow, and for the life of us we couldn't understand what the waiter was saying, due to a heavy accent. No biggie, it added to the ambience. We had really good crostini and flatbread type of dish. It was heavy on the cheese, which is never a bad thing. They had a vast wine selection as expected, and we had the daily special which was really good.

Overall, this is a really good date spot if you're in the area and looking for something a bit more romantic. Otherwise, I'd probably skip it.

Loved the very friendly and informative sommelier and the delicious wine. Even better they have tastes and glasses. WORD. And I had a delish pistachio pesto crostini, but the cheese plate was major lame. It was like 4 pieces of cheese and I couldn't taste the truffles at all. Plus the cheese itself was basically like Swiss with a few truffle shavings. Nothing to write home about.

But I liked it enough to go back. The decor is very old-school Italy or maybe Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. But that cheese plate better be good next time.

First off, I LOVED the rustic decor and ambiance...very charming.  While the specials were unique items I had not tried before, I found the food a little on the blander side for my genetically predispositioned bold-n-spicy taste buds...

If you plan on drinking white wine, the server's recommendation for the Muller Thurgaw blend was amazing.  You won't find this one often, so definitely check it out.  Oh and word of advice:  Avoid the dried up Tiramisu and just leave with a wine soaked mouth.

Went here with three girlfriends to start off the evening.  The rustic atmosphere is so lovely, as others have stated.  There are tall candlesticks on the tables which I thought were a nice touch.  And the bathroom is one of the prettiest I've seen.

I had a couple of glasses of a red that was suggested, and was specially priced.  The others had a white and sparkling.  All were pleased.

The waitstaff/bartenders were very attentive and charming!

I've gotta try the food next time.

Especially enjoyed the zucchini, carrot, pecorino romano salad. Simple, elegant and delicious. The chef came to see if we had enjoyed our meal which was a nice touch. Highly recommend.

My first experience at DOC was 5 years ago. After brunch with a friend, Tammy*, at the now-defunct Oznot's Dish, we decided that another drink was in order (the perfect way to alleviate our hangovers). One drink turned into a bottle of white, and suddenly it was 1 AM and the room is spinning.  The two of us drank something like 4 bottles of wine and I remember the owner (this very sexy Italian) sitting on Tammy's lap.** I also remember a large group of strangers joining us for a bottle of port.

While I don't recall most of what happened that night, I still had a retarded amount of fun and have been going back ever since. The sexy Italian is still there with his bedroom eyes, and he always persuades me to buy whatever it is he's selling. The wine is the best in Williamsburg, and I always have a perfect experience there, whether it's stopping by for a nightcap or getting wasted on a Sunday afternoon.

Bonus! Did you know they fly their buffalo mozzarella in from Sicily?  Jesus, is it good.

*her name has been changed. I would NEVER hang out with a Tammy.
** Tammy spent the next day on the couch reading the Bible swearing she would never drink again. But that is neither here nor there.

It's been a while since last time I paid visit to this Sardinian[1] wine bar. I remember I liked this place, and I have to say I found it to be even better than before. My family is originally from Sardinia (one of the poorest regions of Italy), so trust me here: I know what I'm talking about.

The decor is rustic and very simple: dark, wooden floors, thick wooden tables, exposed bricks, and a lot of white (the warm Mediterranean white that you fin in Southern Spain, Greece, Sicily, etc...). A few authentic Sardinian touches here and there, like small rugs with stylized animal figures, wicker baskets, wooden masks.

My gf and I came here on a Friday night; I was pleasantly surprise to find it not overcrowded at all: we chose to be seated in the large room at the back, which had about 2/3 of the tables empty. I also liked the jazz music they were playing in the background (Chet Baker and Miles Davis).

The menu[2], much like the decor, is simple and rustic. Don't expect a full restaurant dinner here: this is a wine bar, and the menu is designed to accompany and enhance your wine experience. The wine menu, which includes only Italian wines[3], is very impressive. Plenty of choices from Sardinia, of course, Cannonau in primis, but not only: this may be the only place in the city where you can find Carignano del Sulcis. If you prefer white, I would recommend a Vermentino: a dry and aromatic wine that goes great with fish, but holds its ground perfectly well with cheese and cold cuts. If you opt for the house wine, it comes in different sizes: our "small" contained the equivalent of four full glasses. At just $13 this is something you may want to consider if a full bottle is too much, or if you are planning to keep drinking elsewhere after dinner.

There is a wide selection of cheeses and cold cuts. Personally, I would have liked to see a bit more typical Sardinian cold cuts, like wild boar salami. The menu also offers crostoni, includin one with "bottarga di muggine": a typical Sardinian delicacy made of sun dried grey mullet roe that you grate over pasta or salad[4].

For starters, we shared the pane carasau guttiau ($5). Pane carasau[5] is a very thin, flat, and crisp bread from Sardinia. In this case, it was sprinkled with olive oil, salt, and rosemary. We then shared the special salad with beets, soft goat cheese, and apple. I then had the pistokku bresaola ($13; bresaola arugola, pesto, goat cheese mozzarella): the ingredients are layered over a sheet of pane carasau, and melted in the oven. I really liked the simplicity of this dish: no need to be fancy when the ingredients are delicious. I also liked the different textures that make this rustic dish: the crisp pane carasau, the soft bresaola, and the melted cheese. VH had the malloreddus (a short, ridged Sardinian pasta) with salsiccia in tomato sauce. This very simple dish and delicious was the only pasta dish on the menu.

We had enough room for dessert. The menu offered home made tiramisu', chocolate salami, and two specials. we opted for the chestnut mousse, which came sprinkled with hazelnuts and served in a delicate philo pastry. I loved both the soft and firm consistency of the mousse, which packed flavor without too much sweetness.

Our server, Dave, was very good: attentive but totally unintrusive (don't you hate when a waiter keeps coming to the table every 5 minutes to ask how everything is?), and very knowledgeable about the menu.

    $41 each including tip.

This place is good for a date. The atmosphere is simple, warm, very welcoming, and romantic. The small plates will encourage you to share, which is always sexy. Unless your date into ultra-sophisticated, fancy dishes in very formal dinner settings. But if these are the kind of people you're going out with, you're probably not reading my reviews anyway. Good for groups too, thanks to a couple of communal tables.
    -------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------
[1] The only other Sardinian place I know in the city is Cannonau (formerly known as Assenzio) in the East Village http://www.yelp.com/bi...

[2] The menu is hand-written on brown paper, including the very extensive wine menu.

[3] Wines from Southern Italy are very under-appreciated, which also means that they are a great value: Cannonau (try Nepente di Oliena, if you can find it) and Vermentino from Sardinia, Primitivo and Salice from Salento in Puglia, and Nero d'Avola from Sicily.

[4] I like bottarga very much; it can transform a good artichoke salad in something pretty unique.

[5] You can find pane carasau at Fratelli Iavarone in New Hyde Park: http://www.yelp.com/bi...

Once again, Billyburg does not disappoint. We came here on a Friday night for dinner, and it wasn't extremely packed with people (which I like). The restaurant itself is spacious, with 3 rooms for dining. We opted to sit in the back room. The place is cozy, dimly lit, has a nice rustic feel, and just downright romantic! Their specialty is Sardinian. Sardinia is an island in the Mediterranean Sea, and part if Italy. And although the food is Italian, it has its own distinct flavours, which this restaurant does a nice job of showcasing. I like that the menu is written on brown paper, it gives the place a simple yet elegant dining experience.
We decided to share a few different things on the menu:

    1.  Pane carasau - a bread made of fine, crispy layers, also known as "carta da musica," it is great with olive oil and rosemary sprinkled on top.

    2.  Salad with beets, greens, apples, and cheese in light lemon sauce - may not be native Sardinian specialty, but still very good and fresh. And...you must eat your veggies ;-)

    3.  Malloreddus with sausage and tomato sauce - typical gnocchi of the island, they sort of look like small mini-croissant shaped pasta.

    4.  Pistokku Bresaola - its your Sardinian version of pizza. Pistokku is a flatbread of Sardinia and it is made with bresaola, arugula, and goat cheese. Very flavourful and not as heavy as a traditional pizza!

    5.  Hazelnut mousse - light, and not too sweet. Excellent dessert!

We shared a carafe of the house wine, which was $13 and we both had 2 full cups of wine. The wine was a pinot grigio. Dry and just the way I like it. The wine was a bargain!

I really enjoyed dinner here, will definitely be back to try more Sardinian fare.

FYI:  This is a great date spot. Such a beautiful dining experience. Sure to please any prospective date ;-) And...you might just get lucky.

I do love my wine.   So when I went here, I was a bit shocked to see a selection of easy-to-find $10 wines being pawned off for $7-$10 a glass.

The most outrageous part ?  They measure the amount of wine before putting it in the glass!   Wow, that really got my goat.  How cheap can you get?  The least any wine bar can do is pour the wine directly into your glass to at least give the illusion that you're not getting swindled.

To precisely measure out stingy portions from a $10 bottle of wine and  charge $10 for it?   See ya...

At Trader Joe's you can get an Organic Primativo for $5.99 that is superior in quality - and a log of Italian salami for the price of one glass of wine here.

I hate to divulge what tricks I have up my sleeve, but it's no secret that D.O.C. is a great spot for a date. The interior is geniunely cozy and warm, and the dim fluttering light provided by candlelight really gives you an out-of-the-country feel. The furniture demands you to relax and take a load off, and quite honestly i've never found a stiff wooden chair so comfortable in my life.

The selection of cheese, while not large, is very impressive. I usually go with the house platter but my favorites are the ricotta salata and the pecorino romano. The smoked meats are great as well, and to wash down the salty cheeses and meats with a full bodied wine is one of life's great pleasures. I haven't tried any of their main entrees but their paninis can definitely hold their own (get anything with proscuitto...why wouldn't you?).

D.O.C. is perfect for those who are part Steve Urkel and part Stephon Urkelle; impress a girl with this great date-spot AND satisfy your cheese cravings with one stone.

I went here on a "date" with a friend I had not seen in some time. We got a bottle of red wine, a cheese and meat plate, and a couple of fennel salads.  All very good.

My friend and I sat and chatted by candle light and almost reached across the table to hold hands. It's that romantic in there!  A great place to take a date. Seriously, everyone was on a date when we went. We were forced to flirt with our waiter.

In the warmer months you'll be lucky if you can grab a table outside.

This place serves the type of food that literally melts in your mouth. It's the kind of meal where you keep going "oh wow" so many times your dinner guest wants to reach across and sew your mouth shut.

My favorites: The crostini with pistachio bruchetta. It has a sweet, salty tangy flavor - out of this world.

I forgot the name but they have a pasta in a wine sauce with goat cheese that literally melts in your mouth.

To echo everyone else, this is an amazing date spot.  It's got low lighting, its not overly crowded and gorgeous homey wood tables.

I am not going to complain about the good looking owner or waiters either. ;)

Can't believe that I haven't stumbled on this place before.  Excellent wine bar in Williamsburg: they have a great selection of bottles, most of which are available for a sizable $3 taste.  The menu piqued my interest and the food looked and smelled great, but I will be honest and say that my friend and I stuck to the meat and cheese plate for a snack.

The m/c plate was okay, but next time I'd just get the meat plate as the cheeses were unexciting to say the least and the meats were quite good.  Also, you can order the plate for one person or two, but our server recommended that we split the one person since the two person option was really meant for large parties.

If I actually lived in Williamsburg, I think this place would fast become my after work standby.

    Slice cheese, arrange on plate...serve?
Apparently too hard for the folks at D.O.C. Wine Bar.

A table next to us--who arrived quite a while afterwards--received steaks before my table received a "specialty" cheese plate. After asking for it, the waiters were completely unapologetic and snotty. And after asking for our bill a couple of times, we just threw money on the table and got the hell out of there.

With an impressive wine list and servers that are super friendly, I could stay belly close to their bar for ages. I was just there on Saturday and I had the nicest pinot nero with some friends. We also ordered one of their delicious crostini, black olive tapenade on rustic bread. Nice.........

Fan-friggen-tastic spot! Took my girlfriend here for a relaxing night after she took her LSATs earlier that day. It's quiet, the food's delicious, the wine's amazing, and the ambiance of the entire place is spectacular!

If you're looking for a party, this is not the place for you. Our dinner was about 3 hours long with an amazing pasta dish and some of the best wine I've had in a long while. We had a great discussion over dinner, and it was just nice to relax on a Saturday night and enjoy each other's company.

I am also surprised at the low review score, so here are some tips: if you'd like a romantic date with your partner, by all means visit the DOC Wine Bar. If you're looking for over-priced drinks and being smashed between smelly, sweaty frat boys and/or half-starved Columbia undergrads, go to Manhattan.

Been going here for years, and the food has been consistently excellent.  Italian regional meats, cheeses, flatbread (yum!), salad, crostini,  panini, a few daily specials and of course, wine (D.O.C., or Denominazione di Origine Controllata, is an Italian wine designation indicating it comes from authentic origins and techniques).

Do go here to linger in a romantic, rustic atmosphere with friends or lovers and nibble.  You can't go wrong with the mixed cheese or mixed meats plates...the pesto crostini is off the hook, the olives are happy olives, not the sad olives you get at some places.  Did I mention the flatbread?

Do not go here when you're really hungry excepting New York-service.  Everything is authentic Italian here, and that includes the service.  You'll need to be patient for your food and your waiter -- even when they're not busy -- unless you're a friend, a baby, a grandparent, or a hot girl sitting at the bar.

Prices seem to be creeping up all the time (the weak dollar?).  You'll need to spend at least $45 or more including wine to get full.  Oh yes, and keep in mind they charge a $6 per person plating fee if you bring your own cake.  Ouch!  I'd like to give this place 3 stars for their prices, but that extra star is because it's a special, unique place.

This quaint, cozy, and romantic Williamsburg cafe has quickly become one of my favorite places in the city. I went there for a very relaxing, European-style dinner (read 3+ hours) and had a fantastic evening. The staff was very knowledgeable and fun; our two waiters recommended a wonderful bottle of Sicilian wine, were very attentive, and overall provided excellent service.

Both of us tried their special, a lovely and very Italian pasta dish, and their chocolate dessert. We were definitely satisfied with everything.

I'm also very surprised to read the low score reviews. My experience was nothing but positive. If you are looking for a place to have a romantic evening with someone you care about, this is absolutely you place for you!

The food was DELICIOUS, the wine slightly over priced.
The service was the worst I've had in memory. The worst.

What an adorable spot in the burg.. that's a little off the main street. Easily accessible, yet not too too crazy crowded and loud. Cute space with nice lighting, brick walls, nice bar, extensive wine list (at least it seemed so, I'm not much of a drinker).. it was a great spot to grab a little meal before going to MHW to see Beirut on a chilly Wednesday night.

I had the pasta special (shell pasta in pink sauce with sliced up cured meats and who knows what else.. pure crack).. and it was delish. I just wish the portions were a little bigger so there'd be more for me to stuff my face with. Our waiter was a friend of someone I was dining with so he was of course, awesome. Great recommendations, and when he said the Tiramisu was the best ever.. he was totally right. It was da bomb. Prices are a little steep for the neighborhood and the portions, but I was pretty happy overall (free dessert will do that).

I'd definitely want to come back here and hang out more.. I like the vibe. And the pasta, and the tiramisu.

I enjoyed so much this place that I felt I had to write this review.

First of all, the ambiance is really cozy. The decor, the candles. Everything.

As a starter, we shared the ham, fontina cheese and mushrooms pistokku. Magnificient.

Then we had the malloreddus and the special pasta of the day. Both awesome.

And what to say about the dessert? The best Tiramisu Ive had since I went to Rome 2 years ago. Perfect.

    I totally recommend this place.

I really enjoyed my rustic experience here.  The restaurant is incredibly vast, with three rooms for your dining pleasure.  I'm not sure what this building used to be, but you feel like you're in some kind of medieval farm building or something.  Each table is romantically lit with old school candles, there are some sort of masks hanging on the walls, pillowed bench seating,  Good for groups or couples.

The menus are written on the same brown paper that serve as placemats, none of the silverware matches - rustic rustic rustic.

I'm not sure why there are so many $$$s listed, but dishes are not expensive - mains are no more than $14, and you can get lots of nice things - like crostonis (bruschetta like things), paninis, meat and cheese platters, and these sardinian pizzas.  There are typically not a lot of pastas, strangely enough, but everything we had (salad, crostonis, pasta) was delicious.  Maybe it's a Sardinian thing.

We also ordered a large carafe of house red for $22.50.  Much of the dishes were vegetarian, but not necessarily vegan (although I'm sure you can order it vegan).

Really a lovely little dining experience.

I've been going here for years - my favorite spot in NY, hands down.  (I met the manager and chef a while back when I lived in the neighborhood and they crashed a Halloween party I was having.  Best crashers ever, most fun people ever.)

The staff is knowledgeable, the food is delicious and you can't beat their New Years Eve party.

Tip: If you want a fabulous glass of wine, ask Diego what the specials are - the man knows his stuff!

This is a great date place.
You get a good wine selection and a decent menu and great atmosphere, like you have been picked up and carried away from NYC.

Fantastic selection of wine! Great place for a date, beautiful setting, I especially like the back room.
The staff is very nice and helpful. I am not particularly crazy about the food, although it is very good: fresh home-made pasta every day, but somehow little portions.
However, the wine selection is really outstanding! Most of the time, I just go for dessert and a glass of wine.

On a dark and stormy night in NYC, I met up with a friend at this sweet little paragon of a city meeting place.  Walking in, it felt like I was back in Italy yet with better service and a slight modern feel in a rustic environment.  The wine selection is just magnificent.  We ordered a bottle of red and a cheese sampler.  The lighting is dim and cozy which lends to an intimate feel for a place that really seats quite a few people.  This is a great place to start or finish the evening or even just settle in for the night!
