The beef curry here is the real thing and it's good, and it's a must try if you like Japanese-style curry. The beef in the curry just melts into the sauce and you can tell that they put time and care into making it. The curry comes with a choice of katsu, korokke, etc - we went with the korokke, and the extra crunchy shell of the korokke held up well to the curry. We also ordered a few rolls from the long list of sushi on the menu (including lots of veggie options). They have everything to satisfy the traditionalists as well as those who want to experiment with apple, shiso, and avocado in their rolls. The bentos looked good, too...next time, next time.
Place your order at the counter with the friendly owner when you enter and find a seat in the front by the windows or in the cozy area towards the back. If the 80's J-pop playing over the speakers isn't enough to transport you to a small cafe somewhere in Osaka, the food will.
I've been there three times regardless of its odd location for someone lives in Tacoma. My usual route is to stop by Maruta for grocery and here for dinner since they're pretty close together.
Their food isn't targeted for fancy Japanese food fans - don't expect high-end sushi with delicate works. They should go to Chiso or something. Cutting Board is for those who enjoy casual and homey Japanese food with reasonable price, which may remind you of kissa-ten (kind of old-school cafe) in Japan..especially some of the food menu like curry and yakisoba. The most expensive dish is Samurai bento with lots of stuff for $15. Most of their food is under $10.
As many folks have already mentioned, it's impressive (almost overwhelming) to check out their extensive menu. I've tried several rolls and liked them all. Hokkaido is addictive...very rich though.
Their deep fried food like menchi katsu (deep fried hamburger patte, kind of), croquette with potato, ground beef or edamame, kara-age (deep-fried chicken thigh) is the main reason why I go back. They're very authentic. Love curry with any of deep fried stuff. Katsu (deep-fried pork chop) curry is probably the most common in Japan. Curry is well made probably being cooked for hours and hours. Big portion too - three large croquettes with curry for $8 or so!
Hand-made miso-based salad dressing is awesome. I need to ask to see if they can sell some...
I also have tried chirashi, which was OK...probably will stick with rolls and other stuff.
Service is good. I've never had a bad experience there. Usually the owner does most of the work there, and it's understandable that he may not act like a professional server, and you have to grab your water and silverware. He's always polite and easy to talk to...at least in Japanese.
The sushi is pretty good! I was there for a little b-day celebration for a friend.
Standard prices as far as sushi goes, and you order from a printed excel spredsheet. I actually like it this way, I'm not sure if this is the norm, or if they just didn't have a server that evening.
I think this used to be the Kurry King, and was just turn-keyed into a sushi joint. I really don't like the decor and atmosphere, and hope that will change. It's pretty dingy, and for the price (standard) I want it with at least the illusion of grime removal.
The service was really nice and respectful in that Japanese Sushi chef way. Now that I am a South End Seattlite, I'll most likely be back.
I really like this place. The food is yummy and there's lots of choices on the menu. Love the location since its just a hop, skip and a jump from my house.
Pretty yummy and a fairly large offering, I'm very happy going here
Pros: Good mid-level Japanese food. Nice staff. Georgetown. Satisfying $15 bento: lots of little choices.
Cons: The restaurant is run down. There's really no customer service. Parking can be a little hairy sometimes. Busy street.
For the area, it might be one of the best places to get Japanese food. But be warned, the atmosphere is modest.
Over the last couple of months, my wife has challenged me to find places to eat that are relatively nearby and can cure whatever we're craving. The Cutting Board did both.
Being a Friday night, I called ahead for a table and was glad I did. The setup is one where you walk in, get in queue, order your sushi, then find a table. Being a rather small place, getting a table can be a challenge. However, if you call ahead and reserve, you can rest assured you'll have a seat.
We started with a regular-sized order of Chicken Teriyaki and edamame. The chicken was a lot larger than I expected, and I was kinda full afterwards. I really liked it, but my wife thought it was dry. We both agreed it had excellent flavor. The edamame, was served cool, which I thought was weird, but it was still good.
Then out came the rolls, and they were HUGE. Each roll had 8 pieces. I don't remember anything on the menu saying there were 8 pieces, and given the price range (from $3.50 to $11.00), I was expecting 4-6.
By far my favorite was a vegetarian thing my wife ordered. I told her it was a "carnival of flavor" in my mouth. It was amazing, and I wish I could remember the name. It had tempura asparagus, red bell pepper and mango. Wow!
We got a plate of tuna sashimi, and it was good too. Definitely high quality and it met my expectations.
I am sure we'll be back!
Finally got to check this place out over the weekend and I was pretty impressed. I was expecting some really small, beat up, hole-in-the-wall type place but its really not that at all. Well it is kind of a hole in wall and small but the inside was much nicer than I was expecting. There is no waiter service, you just order at the counter. As everyone else has mentioned, the menu is huge. It took us at least 10 minutes to decide what we wanted. We were the only people in the place so we got our order pretty quickly. Yum! Everything tasted delicious and fresh, especially the salmon nigiri. The inari was pretty good too.
I liked the location (right next to Stellar) and it would be a great jumping off point if you planned to spend the evening in Georgetown.
Not a fan of the teriyaki. Chicken was barely cooked, I don't they grilled it? Ordered a 'spicy' tuna roll, wasn't spicy, not sure if it was tuna, definitely was a roll.
Tiny portions on the teriyaki. This is teriyaki country, unacceptable teriyaki.
This place used to be a joint called 'Curry King,' which was a slophouse. Not sure if this place is much of an improvement.
Too many sushi options. Maybe I don't know anything about sushi, but the roll wasn't spicy. Interior is clean.
I feel bad about giving this place two stars simply because their service was excellent. The problem is that I *have* experienced better, and I tend to review more for the food and less for the service UNLESS the service is just so terrible that it makes me not want to come back. Sadly though, the food is what makes me not want to come back here. I reiterate, the service was WONDERFUL. They just seriously need to work on the thought behind the vegetarian rolls.
For all intents and purposes, when we went to Cutting Board we went as vegans, not strict vegans (as we did not inquire about the source of the sugar in the sauces) but we don't eat dairy, and we don't eat eggs in restaurants. Cutting board was quite helpful with the sushi choices as they have a menu key that points to all the vegetarian sushi. First off we either had to cut half of of the choices (due to the spicy mayo addition) or ask for them without mayo. We went sans mayo on one roll, but the rest we ordered came from the non-mayo options. Luckily the man who took our order was careful to ask us if we wanted mayo on that roll, as we had actually missed it. He caught that we don't eat eggs because we asked about 2 salad options (which I assumed to be vegetarian) but the sunomono is made with beef stock (which is VERY odd, and the other had egg in it (not listed on the menu). So he was the one to point out that we might like the mayo removed from the roll, and THANK YOU for catching that!
We made our choices, ordered the veggie gyoza, and a dinner salad as well (vegetarian).
The salad was incredible, albeit loaded with sugar. I should have ordered the dressing on the side as it was truly swimming in it. But it was very good and I'd love to replicate it at home (with less sugar).
The Gyoza (which my boyfriend ordered and I tasted) were lovely, but not typical. The wrapper was crispy and not doughy, and while the change was interesting I think I do prefer the doughy version. The insides were lovely! The veggies weren't overcooked, and they were bright green. I loved them. If it weren't for the wrapper it would have been a health food.
The sushi rolls...ok, here is where we get to my problem. We ordered 2 Inari, 1 cucumber roll, 1 more traditional veg roll with pickled veggies, 1 tempura tofu roll, and 2 of the odd rolls which included fruit in them.
The rice for the rolls was not as good as I have had in other places, and they easily fell apart. The Inari was good, but again the rice...
The pickled veggie roll was my favorite, and if I came back that would be the only roll I would order here. The cucumber was basically for filler, but was decent. I did not have the tofu roll but my boyfriend wasn't impressed (without the mayo I assume it just had little flavor).
The dreaded fruit rolls.
1 roll had lettuce, apple, mango, and cilantro...and perhaps something else, but it was NOT good. Especially not good with soy sauce. I felt like I was eating hamster food. The Cilantro was overpowering, and the rest...well it just was not good. The other roll was similar but also had green onion (I believe) and bell pepper. Again...this is just not a good sushi combo.
Perhaps I am being too traditional about it, but I have enjoyed some fusion rolls in the past, I am not a stickler for traditional if it DOES taste good, but these combos just don't work with rice and seaweed. not to mention soy sauce.
I do hate giving a poor review (because the service was great), but I do think that it would be better to change the vegetarian menu a tad to include flavors that actually work together.
My only service complaint was that we had to sit right next to the bathroom and open kitchen door, not because the place was full, but because the empty tables had not been bussed. Otherwise, again...wonderful service.
love love love the food
fresh and good they have traditional and not so traditional!!!
lots of stuff to try even there house salad is amazing!!!!!
i eat here a LOT and get some thing new all most ever time and i love it all!!!!!!
fair priced for sushi
you can eat cheap here (house salad $4 and some $4 rolls)
Second time back. This place is amazing. We had a plethora of sushi the first time. All of it was fresh, delicious, and creative. Favorite was #29 - hyogo.
Liked the bento less. Got the cutting board bento. A bit too fried, but still really tasty. Extra points for the non-iceburg lettuce salad. Spring greens and hardy green leaf lettuce.
I would come back to this place every week if I could. Prices are very reasonable for sushi and outstanding for the quality.
The menu is extensive, wow actually overwhelming, so many choices. I've only been there once but would definitely go again. Ordered Chicken Katsu Curry the curry tasted homemade - not the S&B Curry from the box. We also had maguro, ebi, california roll sushis all were fresh and good. Others had bento boxes, lot's of fried items, tasty.
This sushi joint rocks.
The service is so friendly, and the menu selection couldn't be better. I'd grown so weary of the standard obligatory veggie options most restaurants have to offer. That was before I met the apple, mango, red bell pepper, cilantro, lettuce roll. Not to mention the fried yam, red bell pepper, avocado on top w/wasabi mayo roll!
Beyond sushi, the bento boxes are the best I've tried anywhere, the spicy teriyaki here is superb -possessing exactly the right amount of sweetness- and the yakisoba is delightful.
Thank you, sushi gods, for gracing Georgetown with this tasty little treasure!
I just had the yakisoba, which was well prepared and the chicken was actually tender and juicy. It was almost too fresh and tasty, if that's possible.
My friend loved her sushi - an amazing looking roll, unagi and magarol nigiri.
Prices are very good (some rolls are around $10, but they are all very large).
pretty good. there are about a dozen rolls, some with mayo (which i'm not picky about) and some that sound really, really weird. i've had the fried tofu roll called Gifu (really good), the veg roll called Ishikawa (really good) and a cucumber roll. decent but pricey - i spent $18 for all 3 rolls and felt it was too much for mediocrity. too bad, because i had high hopes. i'd come back but only if craving sushi and in the neighborhood.
Yes please! Creative rolls I've certainly never seen before (apple? mango? olives? macadamia nuts?!) at pretty good prices. It's a small place, but when we went at about 7 on a Saturday night there was plenty of room for our party of 6. (I think we just got lucky.)
I wanted to try everything, so I'm going to guess we'll be back.
Nice little environment, but unimpressed by the food.
The way the menu presented the selection of rolls was too overwhelming. The choices contained very little raw fish and seemed to be the same roll listed in multiple locations differing only by one or two interchangeable ingredients. (Menu writer: I'd recommend you list each base roll and then the interchangeable options for it. The menu would be drastically smaller and easier to read.) I was also struck, and not in a good way, by how often the sushi included deep-fried items. On a positive note, the eel, as another reviewer mentioned, is quite good though a bit on the cold side.
They serve nigiri Thursdays-Sundays. The pieces of fish are huge compared to the rice below, but all of the fish tasted pretty similar and the salmon was a bit sinewy (unusual in the Pacific Northwest where the otherwise benign salmon nigiri can really stand out).
This place is ok if you're in the neighborhood, but certainly not a destination spot.
Georgetown has many gems and this is one of them. I like best the the sushi. They have a big variety and I have ordered party platters from them a few times. I am not a big fan of the other food they serve because it's fair at best and didn't really impress me being as particular about food as I am. I prefer to rate most restuarants on what I think they make best. Some resturants do everything well this resturant the Sushi is the best item they have and I highly recommend it. I like the rolls because they venture away from the trendy rolls that most people pick like the California roll that everybody gets. I special order sushi platters and I am always happy with the results. :) I have only ordered out I can't really eat at the restaurant most of the time with my son he gets bored so it depends on your kid mine is three and he likes to play more then eat. :) For those that snob over decor..get over it..some treasures the best kept secret is it may look like a dive but hell more for me...cause the sushi rocks..at least fo rmy Japanese taste buds this place rocks when it comes to the sushi I would rate the sushi a 8-9. :)
WOW.
So impressed. The restaurant is small, but clean. Japanese pop/rock plays in the background. I swear I picked out a song that sounded like "Nothing's gonna change my love for you" by Glenn Medeiros, but it was in Japanese. Anyway.
Self service. You order at the counter and pay at the counter, but they will bring your food out to you.
Caution: There are ALOT of rolls on the menu. Like, 65. So if you have problems making decisions, or have small children with you, this could be frustrating. The menu is a bit hard to read, with all the lines, but it was slow in there, and we were in no hurry so none of this bothered me.
THE FOOD: EVERYTHING was good.
Miso Soup wasn't too salty like it usually is, had green onions, plenty of seaweed and tofu in the bowl. Very tasty.
The edamame was cold, and not oversalted. Why cold? I think to make sure the beans didn't overcook, and it was great.
Beef curry with chicken katsu - amaaaazing. Down to the little pieces of pickled ginger that gave it an extra zing (the ginger is pink, so if that's not your thing you can pick it out). The katsu wasn't that flat, over-fried-with-more-crust-than-meat junk that other restaurants sometimes offer. Nice, thick chicken breast and it tasted wonderful.
Sushi - my boyfriend totally went overboard here and ordered an insane amount of fish for two people. I can't even tell you what we had -but it was delicious.
Go! Take your friends! This establishment deserves adknowledgment for a job well done, all the way around. Kudos!
Yay! A pleasant surprise! I was really hesitant to come here to eat because from the outside this place does not look too hot. Remember this used to be Kurry King? Ew. So if the signage and location weren't bad enough you can see the bare-bones interior from the outside.
It is really clean bright inside with not much at all inside but a ton of menu's. There are several on the wall and all over the order counter.
I wasn't super hungry and got a roll. I spent a lot of time deciding and I got number 29, that's all I remember. I would have liked the tea we got to come in a for-here cup and a not a to-go cup, but everything else was fine/
Yum, I'm so glad there's a sushi joint in Georgetown now! We had a nice first experience there. The selection of rolls is large and includes MANY veggie options. Oh, and they have nigiri now too. The prices and portions are reasonable and everything was tasty. They have other menu options like grilled fish, chicken katsu, yakisoba, etc too. Friendly staff too. I'll be back!
GREAT SUSHI!
Came here with my friend because I was craving sushi and always wanted to try out the new place. Parking was a little difficult for us but we weren't sure if we could park in the lot across the street?
The fish was fresh and all the rolls we ordered were really good.
It's true that they have 65 different rolls and I think they mix sesame bits with their wasabi?
The only complaint I have is that ventilation is pretty bad and our clothes reeked of the smell of grease from the deep fryer.
I took a menu home with me so I would have an idea of what to order next time.
Fun!!!
The owner is very kind. The food was delicious and fresh.
Nara Roll (eared salmon!!!!) is the best so far i've tried.
Tochigi roll is also our fave.
I must (!) go back to try out others.
It's true some rolls are very similar, differing by only one or two ingredients, but still very fun to look the rolls and choose. and especially for Japanese people, really enjoyable to eat the rolls that has the prifecture's name where we are from and discuss about the taste and the signature ingredients.
I would like to request to use "fish-katsu" or some citrous alternating "sudati" for His Tokushima Roll! haha
The owner is so nice that he gave us home-made "nori-no-tsukudani"(Japanese typical side dish that is great with rice =) )
Oh my god...it was really really good. It had my mom's taste...very tender and mildly sweet. I really appreciate his warm heart.
Hope more people find this place and share this great food and fn time =)
Mapquest it and Go Go!!
Pleasantly Surprised...
I took my friend here for lunch to celebrate his birthday today. I wanted to try it out and see if their sushi was any good. The staff was really friendly as they greet each customer as they enter the restaurant. I had a tough time picking the sushi out of the 65 choices which 50 of them are original. I picked 4 to share and was happy with what I got. I liked the Nara (chicken terriyaki filling with salmon on top) the best. The mayazaki (sp?) was interestingly tasty with the mango and crab filling. The sushi had fresh ingredients and was presented nicely. The only down fall is the quantity. You only get 4 pieces per roll but the prices were not too bad, ranging from $3 to $11 per roll. I would go back just to try out their vast selection of other rolls.
Huge selection of sushi at great prices. And - free parking!
The ingredients were fresh and everything was made to order. I tried the California Rolls, Tuna Rolls, Cucumber Rolls, Seattle Rolls and one more I forgot the name but it has seared tuna, cucumber and lettuce - all of them were REALLY good.
Their spicy chicken teriyaki is also the bomb diggy - their spice isn't just hot sauce slathered on top. It's a mixture of sauteed tomatoes and peppers that sits on top of the teriyaki made out of chicken breast (so you don't get a mouthful of fat like other teriyaki joints).
I really like this place and would recommend it to those in love with sushi! Definitely going back soon.
I almost hesitate to post this review as I am afraid that next time I go the place will be packed! They have a huge and creative sushi menu but for bad asians like me who aren't much of a sushi eater, they have plenty of other choices.
The beef curry is yummy - shredded beef in a real Japanese curry. Add a little chicken katsu and rice and you've got yourself a good, hearty meal for a very reasonable price.
The service was excellent too! We will most definitely be back!
Fresh, fast, fantastic sushi at a great price. We have been here many times since it came to our 'hood and love it!
The staff here are very friendly and attentive. I went there for take out and I was pleased with everything I ate, especially the mackeral.
This place is Japanese owned (very important for Japanese people like myself!) unlike majority of Japanese restaurants, sushi and teriyaki places now owned by non-Japanese people. They serve very traditional style Japanese food like mom's home cooking!
This place is awesome! As a vegetarian, I don't often love sushi places, but the veggie rolls here are inventive, filling, and oh-so-delicious. The yakisoba is also incredibly flavorful and tasty. My husband - a sushi fanatic - raves about how fresh the fish is. And the service is great, too - very friendly, fast, and helpful. We started eating here once a week!
I stopped by this place today for lunch to go. YUM!!! I ordered 4 sushi rolls and seaweed salad. It was delicious and fresh and reasonably priced. Service was SO friendly. They seem pretty excited to be there. I can't wait to go back and try more. They offer 65 different sushi rolls plus many teriyaki and other grill/fry options and salads. This will be a great place to pick up lunch or dinner when i don't feel like cooking!
I had a great sushi dinner here. The fish is really fresh and the staff is very friendly. Price-wise it is very reasonable, I've had cheaper sushi and pricier sushi; I have to say that the pricier sushi was not any better to me but this was much better than the lesser-expensive sushi I have had. They also have a good selection of other items for those with either a fear of raw seafood or who, for various reasons, do not eat anything with a face. They offer several bottled sake varieties and both Japanese and American beer. The only negative thing I can say, and it is really more a function of the space, is that there is no seating right at the preparation area. Some of my best sushi experiences have been when I sit where I can both watch and converse with the chef, I have gotten to try some very interesting items this way. The staff here are friendly enough that if there was a way that they could offer a few seats at the prep area it would truly add to the dining experience.
I was hoping for much better. I talked my lunch date into trying this place out instead of going to the tried and true spot. There may be zillions of "sushi" roll choices... but most of them do NOT involve a raw fish component. The spicy tuna roll was good. We also split a "bento box" which wasn't a bento box at all. We ordered the spicy teriyaki chicken. It wasn't spicy, served on a stone cold dinner plate, flooded in a watery tasteless liquid. Luckily I still had my wasabi dish to douse the chicken in to give it some sort of flavor. Unfortunately, the salad was also swimming in this lukewarm liquid, otherwise the dressing might have been good. The guy working was friendly. I'd say I might give it another try, but I am pretty sure I won't. I'd rather spend an extra twenty to hop the Vashon ferry and got to the Red Bike.
Great, clean, friendly new place in Georgetown. CAUTION!!! They only serve sushi rolls and probably have 50-60 varieties. They do serve teriyaki and some salads. Plenty of parking. Looked like there was plenty to go business as well but small dining room is very clean. Service is incredibly friendly.
