i LOVE David Tran!!!! Ladies... go to him. He will make you look beautiful.
The first time I went to him, I wanted to cut my hair from long (halfway down my back) to a bob. This is about a good 7 inches of hair getting snipped away. But I heard so many good things about him that I was willing to take the leap of faith. I told him the general idea of what I wanted, but told him to mold it to fit my face shape and features. He did absolutely fantastic. I got so many compliments on my hair cut and as cheesy as it sounds... the haircut gave me a fresh new look and outlook on life. He is worth his $75 price tag. He's aso pretty quick too! I was done in just under an hour.
I've also been to Carol Kelly once. She was good too, but I think my style and hair suits David better. You won't regret it!!
Stephanie is fabulous! I have lived in Houston for six years and have visited lots of high end salons (and some not as high end) and this is the only place I've visited more than once! Stephanie turned this former salon whore into a monogamous customer.
I never have a solid idea of what I want done, I just give her the general idea of how I want it to look. I end up walking out with fantastic hair that just requires a quick blow dry and shake of roots before I leave for work in the morning. She is also really good at instructing me on how to create a 'do at home when I want to go a bit fancier. She also does a blowout and style that I can make last for a week if I want.
Stephanie is well worth the price to me, and I especially like that I am never pressured to buy any products (they are exclusively bumble & bumble).
Treasure at the front desk is a doll. Even though you can schedule appointments on their website now, I still do not mind calling.
I also get my brows waxed at Cutloose - amazing! I only have to get them done every 2.5 months (yay!) because they grow out so well.
Cutloose also does fundraisers (fashion and skate shows) for the Make a Wish Foundation, which I think is pretty cool.
It's Montrose...parking can be a pain. Plan on arriving a bit early and hoofing it from the surrounding neighborhood.
I cannot say enough wonderful things about either CutLoose or my stylist there, Traci B! I have always loved my long hair and Traci is fantastic at giving me fresh and new cuts/looks but still letting me keep some of the length that I love. I always feel so refreshed and recharged when I leave Traci--all from just a haircut!!! Seriously. Also, you can't beat the location--plenty of great people-watching on Westheimer while you wait!
I've settled on this place after having somewhat negative experiences at many other places in town.
Tracy does a great job, and when I first went said what she was going to do, which happened to be exactly what I wanted. I've been back several times since, and it has been consistently good.
It's $35 for a men's cut, which isn't cheap, but other places (M Salon) charge $50 and the only differences are that the staff have cooler tattoos and don't do as good of a job.
Go to Domy Books and Cafe Brasil afterward, and the whole experience seems a lot less errandesque.
I have been going to Amanda for over two years. I love every haircut and color I have received. Usually I go in with no idea of what I want and some how she manages to give me the best cut. I highly recommend her!!
I'm what hairdressers like to call a "Salon Whore". That's because I'm not faithful to any one hairdresser, i like to hop around. And Jon Chao from Cut Loose is definitely on my Roster. He cuts my hair so that all i have to do when I get out the shower is blow dry, flip and shake my hair out, and it looks amazing! Really easy to make his hair cuts look good with very little maintenance.
I also love Chad and David from Cut Loose too. But the reason why Cut Loose gets 3 stars from me is because the prices here are pretty hefty. Surprisingly hefty in fact. If I want a great hair cut for not so much I'll go see Jeff from hot tops, or Mai from Celadon.
What can I say... they don't call me a salon whore for no reason. ;)
For dudes, Brandon does a pretty good job. I've been coming here for about 8 months. He charges about $35, which is a little pricey to me for a men's cut, but I don't know where else to go in the Heights/Montrose area. I know there's a Sportsclips down the street, but if I wanted someone to just run along the side of my head with clippers like they are mowing a lawn, I'd just have a friend do it....or i'd do it myself.
I stopped going to franchise owned places because they always butcher my hair, it's either too short, too long, too blotchy and just generally effed up. For the other guys out there, you have to make an appointment, which was a weird concept for me cause I'm just used to walking in.
Anyway, I recommend this place for guys who want something more than a clipper cut.
Michelle always starts with a short consult where we talk about what I would like and I always tell her that I don't want to have a high maintenance 'do and I don't want the layers to be too thin on the bottom (to safeguard against mullets :P) and she always listens! You don't know how hard it is to find a hairdresser that actually listens! Hahah. Don't get me wrong, my friend also goes to Cut Loose for John and he has his own vision for what her hair should be and it always looks fab on her. Anyway, back to Michelle, I love trusting her. This last time I asked her to do whatever she was feeling and I now I love my hair.
Am I feeling controlling about my hair? Do I want something new but don't know what it is? Michelle can totally roll wit the punches.
David Tran rocks. I was bitching to my friend, Becky, the other day because I hadn't had a haircut in 6 months (the horror!) since I'd moved to Houston from San Francisco. I was whining because I wasn't "gonna let just anyone touch my hair... I've had it screwed up too many times... I don't know anyone down here!"
"Quit your pissing and moaning," she says, "and go see David. He's all sorts of fabulous and you won't regret it."
'Hmm," I think. 'Becky's got good hair..."
So I go. And she's right-- he's every sort of fabulous you could ever want in a hairdresser. He's entertaining and fun and stylish. Oh, and I trust him with my hair which is not an easy trust to earn. Thanks Beck-- I owe you some cocktails!!
On one spring afternoon in 1997 I was sitting at Empire Cafe and noticed someone's fabulous haircut. I asked her where she got it cut, and she referred me to Carol at Cut Loose. I have been getting my hair cut by Carol Kelly for over a decade (since my senior prom!) at Cut Loose. I have naturally wavy hair that I sometimes blow dry straight, and she cuts it in a way that can handle both looks without a lot of fuss and styling on my part. I have gotten my hair cut at other places in the past ten years just to see what was out there, but she's the best stylist I've ever gone to, so I keep coming back! She does a fantastic job every time.
I get my eyebrows done by Marie there and get compliments on them ALL THE TIME! I hope they continue working there... forever! I'm glad to have such a great salon in the neighborhood.

Im afraid that i had a very negative experience at this salon - walking out with WET hair (they dont dry off unless you pay another charge) after having a full head of highlights i returned home only to find, once my hair had dried, that i had an inch and a half of 'regrowth' at my roots - not what you expect to have immediately after having had your hair done. I called and they graciously agreed to reprocess my hair, however upon having it reprocessed i found that i still had half an inch of regrowth and my hair had gone a brassy yellow... wont be returning.
I'm a huge huge huge fan of Teri at Cut Loose. Her cuts are very modern, versatile and easy to manage. I visit her about once every three months. She is a little pricey. (Over 60 including the tip). But she is amazingly talented. Highly recommended.
Alas, I'm going to be the voice of dissention here. First of all, I went in for just a simple cut, and the price I was charged was not what was listed on the website (it ended up being close to $15 more, not including tip). Secondly, for the price I paid for the haircut I got, it was not worh it. It's not that it was a bad haircut or anything like that, but....let's just say I haven't been back just because it's near my house. It's a nice salon with a laidback vibe and staff, but perhaps review their stylists on the website first and call and request the one that looks most like the style you're seeking. And be *really* specific about said style--they seem to need that here.
i absolutely love this salon. i haven't had as many compliments on my hair until I fell in love with a girls' hair and begged for her secret. Turns out it was Jon Chao at CutLoose. Since the first time he laid those magic shears near my head, i've never been the same. i don't have the next day hair "no way i can re-create the style the salon gave me", because Jon styles your cut so that it maintains a natural shape that ANYBODY can manage. Chao is one of many stylists at CutLoose who gives you a cut that lasts for about 8-10 weeks. The price is well-worth the low-maintenance, great hairstyle you will be sporting!
Got my hair cut here over the summer. I had never been before, and when i called I expressed my horror of getting my bangs butchered to the receptionist, and she aptly recommended a stylist for me. I'm usually not a big fan of chatting whilst someone chops off my hair, but my stylist was an absolute blast to talk to. He did an amazing job (my hair looked EXACTLY the way I had wanted it), and it even held it's non-frizzyness when I walked out into the rain on Montrose. The price is high, yes, but I've come to learn that with hair--you get what you pay for. Would definitely recommend and go back to.
