This place is AWESOME. You can get a TON of food for very little cash and it's all delicious. Yes, there's no meat, but you won't miss it. The staff is super friendly and helpful and will help you put together a meal you'll enjoy.
They've recently redone the whole restaurant and it's not so hole-in-the-wall as it once was, but it hasn't lost any of the great flavors that keep me coming back again and again! -

This is a nice little affordable place in North Austin. This is a must try place for vegetarians. They have a lot of repeat/regular customers.
Nice appetizers and great Indian chaat. Probably best indian chaat in Austin. North Indian, dishes....not so much. I was happy to see the new look and decor. The place is well lit and hygienic, clean restrooms and good ambiance.
However, they need to improve their operational process. They have an assembly line if you wanna get their meal deals, but if you order chaat, then they make it and call out the name of the dish and leave it on the counter for pick up. It is very confusing, as anyone can pick it up especially when it is peak time. When you pay the bill for assorted chaat/appetizers, you and them both forget what you have got and how much you owe. They would have been better off with a separate chaat station like the restaurants in Dallas, Houston.1 Previous Review: Show all »

I don't believe I've ever said the word "pleasant" aloud. So believe you me that I'm saying it out loud right now as I type it.
Visiting this place was... plllleasannnt. I'm thinking after 2 more visits of the same caliber I'll bump it up to my first 5 star. Maybe.
At 1pm today it was dead, sad face for the business, but that made for a more calming experience for me. I love Indian cuisine but am entirely insecure in every way; especially in trying to pronounce foreign words. The 2 behind the counter were nice - especially the gentleman who informed me about more discounts coming up after I used my yelp check in discount ( 90 cent savings, what!)
Samosas were more fragrant than I've ever had before. I'm awful at identifying flavors but cinnamon stuck out the most. So nice and light crispy. Annnd 2 hours later they still taste good while burping. EW INO,RITE? samosa flavored keeeeses.
Spring rolls - same but slightly sweeter. I'm not a fan of the chutney or the... ketchup... that came with it OH WELL.
I wanted naan and curry and vegetables and BAM Naan Sandwich! Perfect. Amazing. I stuffed myself sick on it. Grilled naan with peppers and onions and curry. I kind of want to go back for more. now. It was a shit ton of food for $8... tried but couldn't save any for later. -

Hooray! For an atypical indian option. All vegetarian-all awesome. Its a little confusing to catch how to order, but the smiles on the staff eases you through all that. The curry and chana I had were a bit americanized. But thats where the faults stop. Chutney, pickle, chai, and paratha were outstanding. I gotta come back for the idli sambar

I can't believe I haven't posted about their remodel! Curry in Hurry shut down for a week (it was a rough week) a few months ago to take over the space next door to them.
The new restaurant is HUGE, inviting, and (surprisingly) well designed. They've got a new buffet-style line so you can look at all the dishes when ordering - which will be a huge help to the unfamiliar-with-Indian-food crowd since the menu doesn't have any descriptions.
Prices are still a steal, service is still great, and the selection is even greater! I'm going to petition for six stars!Listed in: Thank You, Come Again

Review from Doryan R.
It's Curry in Hurry.
NOT Curry in A Hurry. Why? Because it's more awesome that way.
I've been told this place has the best samosas in town. Dubious, I stopped in for some gnoshes. Or whatever the indian word is for gnosh.
It's a pretty straightforward place. No frills Vegetarian Indian food. And it's pretty darn decent with friendly service.
I got samosas, some sort of potato balls (go ahead Keri, chuckle away), and some fried peppers stuffed with curry spice.
The samosas were tasty, but even tastier the next day. And spicier the next day too. I dont' know if they're the best I've ever had, but I DO know that the tamarind chutney was a little to watery for my taste.
The potato balls we're actually darn tasty too. Though flavor-wise, there wasn't much to distinguish them from the samosas. Except they were balls. Balls.
The peppers were outstanding. great flavor, nice spice, and came with a mint chutney which was far superior to the tamarind.
One thing I found out about my palate...i do not enjoy indian Pickle. I got some to go, thinking "I love interesting kinds of pickled things!" No, this is a little too interesting. There's some kinda green ball (see? there it is again!) that's pickled, and I still have no idea what the hell it is. All I know is that it explodes when you bite into it, and there's no real turning back at that point. Holy hell, that was terrible. Well, I learned a lesson. Don't bite the exploding green pickle balls. -
Review from Sarah Z.
Came here with a big group for dinner on a weeknight. We ordered a bunch of appetizers and each got our own entrees.
I initially thought their meal deal sounded really good, albeit a lot of food, but upon looking at their curries.. I had to reconsider. They just did not look right. It was almost as if they had been sitting there for a whole day. They just looked really dried out.
So I thought I would get chole bhatura (a favorite of mine, go to Swad if you want a really great rendition), but that looked pretty dry too. It was seriously just chickpeas. Where was the sauce?
So finally I settled on medu vada, which are fried lentil donuts, kind of. They were freshly made, so they took a while, but I'd rather have them fresh and slow than stale and fast. It was my first time trying medu vada, but it seemed like they could have used some more spice. They were a little bland. The sauce they came with wasn't my favorite either, but I just borrowed the chutney that came with the chili fritters.
Speaking of appetizers, the chili fritters weren't that great, too much breading and not enough chili. The samosas (vegetarian only, as this whole place is vegetarian) were good, not the best I've ever had (see Ken's Donuts for that), but they hit the spot. We also had some kind of lentil sponge cake (but savory) with jalapenos on top. That was ok, but again, seemed kind of bland. I mean, it's Indian food, where are the spices?
Other pet peeves.. they have free water (yay) but no ice (boo). So, unless you like room temperature water, I would buy one of the bottled ones in their fridge or branch out and try something new.
Also.. I don't know if their AC is broken or if they're just cheap like my mom and have it set to 80, but it was HOT in there. They do have one of those tall standing fans, so I would recommend sitting by that.
Bottom line, I prefer Swad, even though Curry in Hurry is MUCH cheaper. But while we were eating, there were about 8 Indian customers who came in, so maybe we just ordered the wrong stuff. -

Eating at Curry in Hurry is like sex: deeply satisfying, slightly messy, and I don't know what the hell I'm doing most of the time.
Tucked away in a corner of a crappy strip mall at the corner of Parmer and Lamplight Village among such gems as Deja Vu Lingerie (seriously? Deja Vu is the last term I want associated with lingerie) and Pok-e-Jo's dry-ass barbecue, Curry in Hurry is easy to overlook. Those who take the time to find and experience it, though, will be treated to an excellent experience in authentic Indian cuisine. Okay, so I feel a little weird calling this place authentic, since I really know very little about Indian food, but every time we come here we're the only white people in the place, which has to be a good sign.
The actual dining area is tiny, but the high ceilings and clean decor make it seem larger than it is. The food is set up in a cafeteria-style display (think Luby's, but smaller and far tastier) behind glass. One suggestion to the management: Please, for the love of God, label the food. As it is, I have to read the descriptions from the menu board and try to guess at what each dish is based on the ingredients I can see. This is an imperfect system at best. Please, label the food either on the glass or on the counter itself, and then write the descriptions of each dish on your neon menu board. That way, clueless fools like me can actually order somewhat intelligently. I still have no idea what the two types of bread or the three types of rice are called, and pointing at one and grunting makes me feel kind of silly.
The food tastes incredible. The spices are perfectly blended, and the flavors fully developed in every dish. The magic of Indian food is the marriage of so many spices and other flavors, and the food here captures that perfectly.
The meal deal is an excellent value, providing enough food to fill you up so thoroughly at lunch that you'll skip dinner. The deal consists of your choice of curry, soup, bread, and rice. I usually just order whatever looks good at the time with my patented grunting and pointing method, and I have yet to be disappointed in anything.
If you're a fan of Indian food, have lunch at Curry in Hurry. If you're not, have lunch at Curry in Hurry and become an instant convert. -

Here's the deal..
They rebuilt and it lost all of it's charm.
It is now just a good place to grab a quick lunch that isn't a burger or sandwich. The food is still good and you can actually sit down and eat there now but I really don't care about it anymore. I enjoyed championing my cramped, hole in the wall lunch spot.
Call me crazy but I loved the dry erase boards leaning against the wall that listed out whatever they decided to serve that day. I liked the simplicity of "Pick one of these, one of these and a bread." I even miss the crappy Styrofoam containers (which are evil, I know) that wouldn't close properly cause you had so much yummy packed in there. It was that place that you told other people to go to and tacked on, "It's going to look a little scary but trust me."
Alas, that is no longer. It is now double the size. It has real tables and real chair instead of 2 sets of plastic lawn furniture. It is set up cafeteria style. The Menu I actually think is more confusing. I finally found the little sign that said "Daily Special" and just ordered that.
There are strange 'artsy' photos that look like the cover of Twilight with different vegetables in the hands instead of an apple. No, I'm not proud that this is the reference I make.
I will still go when it is convenient but I pine for the day where I grab my box, my can of soda and sit on the tailgate of my truck to devour my yummy lunch. -

An amazingly nice lady walked us through the various items behind their counter. She can describe them a lot better than I can, so just go pay them a visit for yourself.
We ended up getting the 8.99 deal where you get 1 appetizer(samosas), 2 curries, a soup, flat bread, rice, and dessert. We decided to live for once and got mango lassi's too.
So... I can put away a lot of food, and this really stuffed me. I even had to take a small box home.
Out of all the items, I really enjoyed the green vegetable curry. The okra in it adds a very nice texture. And I know a lot of you will go for the potato curry over the cabbage one, but chose the cabbage! It's really sweet and flavorful and it has potatoes too!
I like how you can get so many different flavors and textures from one meal, a healthy meal at that, and for such an honest price. Highly recommended.Listed in: Cheap, fast, relaxing, and…

Very much a quick lunch or extremely casual cafeteria style joint.
The food was okay-good, some of it leaning towards too heavily spiced.
The amount of food for the lunch special price is plenty! Good lunch portion. -

wow. so most of my reviews have to do with finding good food in austin that is vegan. not vegan trailers, or the such, but being able to go to a place that can feed my meat eating husband, and me, the vegan (and the two vegan kids).
this place is awesome. it's tucked in a shopping center with a small, poorly done sign. the interior is plain and simple.
walk in, and you can see the menu and all the dishes right in front of you.
the food. amazing. authentic. so many flavors. so many options. everything was so tasty. and crazy cheap. so much food... only twenty bucks.
i can't wait to go back.Listed in: Vegan and the Beast

Food snobs can go elsewhere - I love Curry in a Hurry. And now that they've expanded their sitting area, co-workers and I will make the trek from central Austin (10+ miles south) more often. Their samosas ROCK. (Their tamarind chutney not so much.)
A friend and I would stop by there when in the area, always getting it to go since seating was so limited - the expansion was sorely needed! Five of us stopped by earlier this week and we tried different things, with samples being shared. YUM. This is a group of people who eat Indian, Chinese, Korean, Ethiopian, and Mexican on a regular basis; they have experienced palates and are familiar with the nuances of the different cuisines. It was enjoyed by all. -

I love this place! My hubby usually goes to get take out, but since they've remodeled, we thought we would try eating there.
The lady behind the counter was nice, knowledgeable, and let us sample lots of the food before we got a whole plate of it. It was all, of course, delicious. We all got meal deals with some rice, bread, and curry. Some of us got some soup as well. Everyone one of us loved our meal.
I've also been taking my kid here since she was just under 4 months old. They don't mind the loudness of kids and since she's been eating, she always find something she likes. They have plenty of high chairs too.
Why only four stars and not five? Well, when we walked in around 5:00pm the place was a mess. All but one table needed to be cleaned off. Dirty dishes and trash everywhere. I know this dinning in thing is new to them, but hey, get your tables cleaned off! -

I've been here probably a dozen times, including their pre-expansion days. Being the terrible planner that I am, this place is perfect for appeasing one's appetite in [a] hurry. For those not too familiar with Indian cuisine, you have the benefit of seeing a fair portion of what they have to offer a la cafeteria style. Thus, you can pick and choose what looks appetizing - though everything is good. The only thing lacking is ice to go with the tap water.

Very delicious Indian food, very authentic, the name says it all. I couldn't believe how inexpensive this place is too. Some of the food is spicy as hell and bonus points for that =)
All Vegetarian and many Vegan options def an A+ in my book.
Casual buffet style, friendly service always! -

My favorite part about Curry in Hurry is that this is the most authentic homestyle Indian cooking I've found in Austin.
Recently expanded! Looks awesome inside, expanded menu, same prices. Tri-winning!
For about $6, you get a vegetable dish, a legume dish, rice, and bread. I've never been able to finish. Where else can you get two delicious, vegetarian, delectable meals for that price?
I am absolutely thrilled that they have expanded and hope they consider a second location in South Austin!

Updating my 4* review because the owner contacted me and apologized for not honouring the Yelp coupon. Another reason I've upped their rating to 5 stars is because of the middle aged lady who got my children to eat Indian food and LOVE it. She always gives us samples of the things that we've not had before we order it.

This is one of the best places to eat in Austin. I really like Indian food, but I don't know much about it, though I'm not hard to please. Everything I've had here tastes great. I don't really know what I've had; I don't know what any of it is. But the staff is always patient with ignoramuses like me. I just kind of order stuff at random, and I've never ordered anything I didn't like. I can only imagine how good it would be if I knew what I were doing.
It's all vegetarian. I'm not a vegetarian, and I don't like vegetarianism. But we have to admit that we don't need meat at every meal. And when you don't need it, this is the place to go. Unlike a lot of Indian restaurants, their hours are pretty convenient. I like to do my grocery shopping at the Super Target at Parmer, but, no matter what kind of groceries I get, I always want to stop at Curry in a Hurry for my immediate meal. -

You wont find better faster more awesome curry around.
This is now the place that I compare all my other Indian food eateries to.
I know it might turn some of you off being that there is no meat here, but it doesn't need it. (although, I could always take some home and add chicken.)
The price here is just right, and the flavors are worth 10x the price. For lunch expect to come in and get your food and leave in about 10 min max.
If you want to sit down, there are a few little tables and folding chairs to eat at also. -
Review from Kevan I.
Curry in Hurry is a staple in my gluttonous take-out regimen. It's a vegetarian's paradise of greasy goodness. My favorite items are the samosas (2 for $2), Aloo Sabzi (spicy potato curry), and Kadhi (coconut milk soup). The paneer and cauliflower parathas are also great. I want to try some of the more eclectic items from the chaat menu. :)
The girl that works the front counter is friendly, and she mentioned they were expanding into the space next door soon, adding additional tables and dinnerware to reduce styrofoam usage.
As others have mentioned, there are basically no options for protein here. I do not like okra or bell peppers, and everything else is cauliflower or potato based...served with rice...and roti/paratha...it gets to be a heavy carb bomb. Yes, it's cheap, but so are the ingredients. But it's a delicious, wonderful treat. -

I am a sucker for cheap, fast Indian food. When I lived in Boston, I ate at Gourmet India at least once a week. Same with Shan Grocery, the quintessential cabbie hangout in Chicago. So, when I heard about Curry in Hurry, I had to try it out, even though I don't live anywhere close to Parmer.
There are no meat options (I was a huge fan of the chicken biryani at Gourmet India and Shan), and my dal was a tad bit too watery, but all in all, it was solid. I was a fan of the samosas (I had two while I was there and bought an additional four to go) and the service. The girl working the counter was super friendly and sweet, telling us to grab a seat and that we could pay after we ate. I'd probably bump up my rating another star if the food were more flavorful, but I'll definitely be back -- just wish there were a place like this in walking distance from my neighborhood! -

This place has received great reviews and I am no different. Fast service, huge portions and flavorful.
Rather than a shocker, this is a no brainer. Letting the food sit in the buffet pans is a benefit, it allows the curry flavors even more time to come together.
It's easy: 1 curry, 1 rice, 1 soup, choice of roti!
And I loved that the food had a kick too! -

This restaurant is spectacular, hands down. Curry in Hurry has fast, fresh, indian food that is divine. It's also sooooo cheap. I've gotten full meals with an appetizer, drink and desert for under 10 dollars. Also, the serving are large and will end up being enough to take home for another meal.
You really can't go wrong with that. It's a great place to go if you're not sure about indian food or if you just want to try a lot of new foods because even if you didn't like what you ordered, you only spend 5 bucks.
I've tried many things on their menu too and have yet to find something that I didn't like. Although, I especially like the pani puris. It's an appitizer filled with veggies, topped with spices, and you dunk them in fresh mint water, WHOA! The meals are just so good too! There are so good that I drive all the way from south austin just to eat here. I craveeee it.
Also, if you're a vegetarian this place is heaven. When do you ever have endless options at a restaurant? (there are vegan options as well)
I've been going to this place for a few years now and I'm glad to see that they have expanded and that they are always busy. I'm so happy for these guys. Talk to the owners they are so sweet and love your business! Heck, while you're there take a store though the supermarket next door, Gandhi bazaar. There are lots of beautiful things to buy and have the same owners. The workers are super helpful. Every time I go, I ask a ton of questions and they love that you're interested and go above an beyond to answer any questions you might have.
Just to recap: Curry n hurry is locally owned, delicious, fast, fresh ,cheap, vegetarian, has heaping servings, and friendly staff. You'll love it! -

I would normally reserve 5 stars for a great meal at a nice place with great service. This receives 5 stars for the food alone and the service is not so bad (say hi to Binta). This is a good lunch option for a quick sit down or take-away.
Here is what to expect from my favorite curry place in Austin...
Quality home style cooking at very affordable price.
Strictly vegetarian food with many vegan options
New Menu Changes everyday
Everyday the food is cooked fresh and uses the best ingredients.
All served in a styrofoam container to eat on pretty simple tables and chairs... It's not fancy.
I prefer the curry and soup special. The Bengan Masala is always good. If the eggplant and banana curry is served, it's my favorite. -
Review from Jeremy B.

First of all, this place is called "Curry in Hurry," NOT "Curry in *a* Hurry." The missing article "a" should be your first indication that this place is authentic. Here, you will not have to choose between chicken in a barely spicy cream-based sauce and chicken in a not-spicy-at-all cream-based sauce.
More important than the authenticity, though, is the fact that they actually manage to make vegan cuisine taste delicious, and that it is cheap. In contrast to Veggie Heaven, where I ordered some weird synthetic protein that tasted like it was marinated in cat pee, Curry in Hurry works miracles with lentils, beans, and potatoes. The low cost of these ingredients gets passed on to you, the blessed consumer.
The result? For only $6 (281.34 rupees), you get a delicious meal consisting of curry (one of two choices), dal (lentil) soup, rice, and one of two types of whole-wheat flatbread: paratha, which is fried despite not being American; and roti, which is baked and seems to be India's answer to the tortilla. The food is well-seasoned and not too salty. The spice levels vary among curries, but all of them add a nice kick without overwhelming the other flavors. Although portions are modest and the food has no meat, it's oily enough so that you won't walk away hungry (but by no means does it taste greasy). Samosas (dumplings filled with potatoes and spices) will set you back another $2, but these are some of the best I've had. They are well worth the price.
Although Curry in Hurry is not the most filling meal ever, the flavor and variety in each meal is hard to beat at this price, making it an excellent lunch choice. -

Oh...I love myself some Curry in Hurry. Ever since trying it out, I totally crave their food. I love splitting the Thali deal with someone. It's such a good deal. 10 bucks for more than enough food for 2 people (1 samosa, 2 curries, 1 dahl-beans, rice, bread, and dessert).
I love their potato curry-it's a solid choice and very consistent. I've tried their okra curry, cauliflower, banana, and vegetable curries. Some are better than others but I really enjoy them all. They are flavorful and authentic. I really like their rasmalai dessert as well-it's coconut milk and ricotta cheese with pistachios. It's not too sweet but is perfect for ending a spicy meal.
This is fast and delicious meal and now after writing this I may be drooling on my couch. -
Review from Leah R.
Curry in a hurry - definitely as advertised.
Came in, gawked at the menu for a bit, and then ordered a corn/peppers/veggie tomato curry, the mixed lentil soup, basamati rice, and what seemed like baked wheat flour tortillas.
Negatives:
-I agree with the macro nutrient ratio comment - what I really wanted would have resulted in potatoes, beans, rice, and bread. I figured the veggies gave some redeeming quality to my meal.
-I'm not much of a vegetarian, so I just kept thinking - "this would be PERFECT with some chicken in it". I knew what I was getting into, but still.
-No variation on the spice level. I asked for my dish spicy and she said it was pre-made. I guess I should have expected it with the "hurry" part, but still worth mentioning.
You'll notice I gave it 4 stars, so I must have liked something, right?
-The lentil soup was TO DIE FOR. Both of them. I want to learn how to make it at home, but for the price, I might as well just get a large to go from here for take out.
-The price - 6 bucks for lunch is hard to come by nowadays.
-The portion - for 6 bucks I expected way smaller portions. I literally got two meals worth of food.
-The rotating menu. I think it's cool that when I come back, I'll likely be forced to try something else, because I always get in a rut. Since I don't eat out all THAT often, and in Austin, there are just so many places to go, I don't visit the same place very often. And when I do I just have to have my very favorite thing. So, yeah. Rotating menu good.
-They were able to confirm that they did not use peanut or peanut oil in their food, and Joel W. did not get sick after eating there! Unlike our Sarovar fail where they just flat out lied and didn't care enough to check properly and he bit right into a peanut in a dish that was supposed to be ok and almost spewed in the restaurant.
So the verdict? Really liked it. Next time would probably bring it home and cook up a curried chicken breast to eat with it if possible though (sorry, I'm a total meatitarian...) -

You know those places you pass all the time and say "I need to stop there", but then never seem to make it? Well, this was that place for me until I finally did stop in for dinnner. And I am sure glad I did!
All the menu items were vegatarian or vegan, had amazing flavor, and served in large portions. The staff was friendly and helpful (as the menu had only item names, and no description), and the atmosphere comfortable. No more just driving by this place anymore! -

This place is looking a lot nicer since the remodel - more room, new fixtures. Most of the curries are pretty good and always ready to pick up and go in a pinch... This alone would get them 4 stars - but, some of the staff, however, are still there from before the remodel... and still have the same attitude that matched their old facility. Clean up shop in that regard, and they're on their way to much higher reviews!

One can expect the kind of food you will find at home. And it is completely healthy and simple, pure food.
Place is little crowded sometimes, else very peaceful place. Staff is good supportive, and for a meal they charge u $6.48, which is pretty decent to the food quality they offer.
I would recommend this to all, if one wants to taste authentic home food of India, rely on it WHEN AN INDIAN SAYS THAT :) -

Curry in Hurry: they don't have time for articles. I love this kind of place, where the menu changes daily, depending on the whims of the cook and whatever looked fresh at the market that day. It's not fancy, it's more like home-cooking, and I'm often unfamiliar with the day's offerings, but it's always delicious. And CHEAP! This place is a good horizons-broadening place for me too, as an enthusiastic but only partially literate lover of Indian cuisine, because it gives me the chance to try things I would normally skip right over on a menu on my way to my beloved and familiar small repertoire of favorite dishes. The only way I'm not going to order saag paneer or malai kofta every single time I go to an Indian restaurant is if they're not always even choices.
Good for: cheap take-out, people who like to try new things, people looking for unpretentious Indian comfort food.
Not good for: the unadventurous, food snobs, taking out important clients on expense accounts. -

For the longest time, I came here thinking it was called "Curry in a Hurry." Nope, it's just "Curry in Hurry," which makes it that much more awesome. It's tucked away, positioned in the corner of a strip mall, and prior to their recent remodel, I only considered this place for for takeout meals. Now, with more space and expanded, comfortable seating, I'll be back to dine in. I only had momentary nostalgia, missing the old dry erase board menu for a split second, before realizing that the more stylish and polished interior and layout is a marked improvement in every way. The counter now features a display with many of the menu items, which is helpful when deciding what to order. The service is consistently friendly and fast here. There is also an adjacent Indian grocery.
I'm only starting to familiarize myself with Indian cuisine, but I love all of the wonderful flavors that are packed into this delicious vegetarian or vegan cuisine. I usually get the $6 meal deal with aloo sabzi (potato) curry, chloe masala (chickpea/garbanzo bean) soup, roti (flat bread) and rice. Add in samosas (two for $2), which are amazing snacks or appetizers: golden and crispy on the outside with potatoes, onion, green peas, and spices inside. For under $10, including a soda, I leave happy with enough food for two meals.

Cook yourself up some infinite rice. Send someone out to pick up an order of paneer makhani (mmmmmm), bengan sabzi (good) both 16oz (?), and $1 samosas (at least 2nd-best in town), all for $16. Throw on some Montell Jordan while you re-invent your dining experience and eat at home. Have leftovers for 3 more meals each. Recipe for redemption - right on, Curry in a Hurry. Now let me hear the party say...Listed in: Bollywood Lights
