I don't know what all these other people are talking about, to me the chicken katsu was not BLAND and it certainly filled my curry craving. I guess since i'm not Japanese I don't really know how Japanese curry is suppose to taste like, but it tasted really really good to me. I only wish I had a location closer to me than Cupertino. It was the first time for my boyfriends parents and I to eat here and we were really pleased with the results.
The place itself is clean and modern, and our waitress was good. I'm craving this right now!
You fooled me damnable house of curry, but I shan't be fooled again!
You lured me in with promises of delightful curries atop pillowy piles of rice with delicious veggies or seafood resting gently on top.
Instead I was greeted with CANNED VEGETABLES and only a couple tiny Enoki mushrooms.
Poor beau was accosted by two dried-out miniature shrimp, an old tired mussel that had lost its strength and a bizarre scrap of fish cake.
$10 for a plate with a couple scoops of rice, a 1/4 cup of curry and a tablespoon of vegetables? FOR SHAME!
The restaurant and service far outshone the quality and flavor of this miserable meal.
Curry House?
No,

It was okay. Not wonderful but not horrible. The service was very nice and friendly. It was just the food that came that was pretty unfullfilling.
But this made the trip worth it:
Woman rushed into the restaurant.
Woman asks the waitress, "Can i get a spicy curry to go?"
Waitress asks, "What kind?"
Woman says, "Thai Curry".
Waitress responds: "Um, this is JAPANESE Curry House"
Woman: oh.
:/ Awkward!

I enjoyed the food at the Curry House in SD. I been to the one in Cupertino and they can not compare to the one in SD. There is more selections of food and desserts. I order the weenier and spinach with eggs and rice. Overall the food was good but the weenier was a bit hard because of the cris-cross cut they made on them. They are only missing two stars is because they me a wrong drink, which I ordered the green tea ice tea but I got regular ice tea. They corrected it immediately but our food took forever to come. Plus when you are starving waiting is not your friend. I didn't to try desserts because I was to full. Overall it was good and I would go back for sure

Came here couple of times... the interior was not bad... and clean. The people greeted us in Japanese. The food was a little expensive for a bowl of curry. It's definitely different than the type of curry I'm used to cook. The Curry House's curry was a little blend.
I dunno... I can definitely make curry better than here.

Kinda disappointed with this place. I like the curry places in Japan. Nice atmosphere and decor, the service was excellent but the food was a disappointment. I had the curry with chicken katsu. Katsu was Bland and so was the curry. Curry's supposed to be spicy!
I really love places like Curry House the main reason is because I am kind of a weird guy so for a meal I would love to go to a restaurant where I can get curry, French fries, spaghetti, steak, and wash it all down with a sweetened iced green tea. If you like to eat in a mixed smorgasbord fashion than Curry House is the place for you.
As the name might give it away they specialize in Japanese Curry. They serve curry in three levels of spiciness and the curry can be accompanied by an array of proteins from chicken, beef, wiener (I know this is not a real protein...I just like the word), pork, seafood, and many others. They also serve hamburger and spaghetti, but with a Japanese twist.
If you plan on going you have to try the sweetened iced Japanese green tea. I have learned from one of my friend whom has a very sweet tooth to order the tea with syrup on the side so you can make it sweeter, but some people do like the level of sweetness it comes at, but not my friend and now me. I am totally going to have sugar problems when I am older. I have to say this is not the best or most authentic curry in San Diego...it is a franchise so it is very consistent and decent in taste.

I like Curry House, the service is good and friendly. Whenever I come, my food comes out pretty quickly. The curry isnt too spicy whicy I like. I really like their corn potage and the fried deleux curry. The portion is just enough as well. It fills you up if you are hungry. I'd recommend this place to whoever is craving curry for a reasonable price. The parking can get a little tedious at times though.
The food in this restaurant is so wrong that I walked out crying. I couldn't eat it, and I was upset because I didn't want to be rude to the people around me, but I finally just lost it.
The food here is almost a caricature of the worst stereotypes of southern California: it's so fake! Some of the things look artificially colored. Everything tasted like it had been made with some sort of mix. It's a shame, because there is a lot of really great food right nearby in this same neighborhood.
As an only redeeming plus, the salad was pretty fresh.
However, I found this place extremely disturbing. Asian food is normally very nutritionally balanced, with lots of fresh vegetables balanced with meats cooked in reasonably healthy ways. This place--not so: pretty much everything on the menu has some sort of heavy sauce, lots of carbs, and most entrees have lots of meat, some of which is breaded and fried and stuff. The seafood was really bland, somewhat rubbery, and did not taste even remotely fresh. It's pretty nasty.
And the prices are so high!
Ugh! I can't understand why so many people gave this place such high marks. Call me judgmental, but something must be wrong with people's taste here if this place gets such great reviews!

You know how there's those Americanized Asian food?
Well this is something like that but turned around.
They have Pasta, Gratin, Curry, Soup, Salads, iced coffee, western desserts.. but my favorite so far is crab rice-omlette curry.. sounds crazy, and YES the dish is huge.
I've tried the ordinary curry but the sauce doesn't include any veggies... real plain. But I believe you can customize what you want to include in them. They also have tofu curry which I haven't got to try yet, but I am curious..
The place is ran by House Foods Corp.. so I can't really say the taste is anything spectacular.. maybe i'll put it as"Japanese Dennys"?

I love Japanese curry, and come here out of desperation for lack of beloved Coco Ichiban in San Diego. The salads are thawed (yes, I've had one that is frozen), the curry lacks something, and the people I know who work there.... don't eat there.
Passable.
You can always count on this place to have quick service, and good food. The corn potage is yummy...
I can't give it a 5th star though because you can make all this stuff at home with their pre-packaged curry. Do you think they use the pre-packaged curry in their kitchen? If so, I need to take off a star...

It's on par with good Japanese curry flavor but it wasn't spectacular. It all comes down to whether or not I'd come back for it and I probably wouldn't. I got the Keema Curry which I say out of the other dishes we ordered, is best. Katsu Curry was not at all impressive. I don't remember the other dish we ordered but it was in one of those sizzling pots. We asked for the spiciest and according to my friend, it was not at all. The only thing that half made up for it was the dried pepper that was in the Keema Curry. My guess is that they ask you how spicy you want it, and they have a pre-made batch of that curry sauce and it just isn't what you expect.
The price for this kind and quality of food is definitely not right. Maybe you can try and reason with it by saying you're paying for the restaurant's cleanliness and spacious dining area but, I won't. I'll continue to believe it's overpriced, under-spiced, not on good terms with miso soup and stingy on the hot tea. What good Japanese restaurant makes you pay for hot tea.
If you must go though, try the Keema Curry.

i'm not being sarcastic at all, btw. I sincerely like this place.
I get noodles with Vegetable curry.
I think it's a better choice to get noodles with the curry.
or noodles with spaghetti sauce.
not too many people enjoyed their rice plates....
just stick with noodles.
AND, i would stay away from their chicken katsu. it didn't look or taste like meat... i'd just go to L&L's if i were really craving chicken katsu with a rice plate though...
if you're wondering why i still gave it four stars after reading my reveiw, then go experience and eat for yourself (with my advice of course), it's generally a like-able place.

My never ending quest for interesting noodles brings me to Curry House. One order kinoko and kaiware spaghetti, and one order of tarako and ika spaghetti, "to go please". $22. 15 minute wait, easy because I had to do some shopping at Nijiya next door anyway.
Why go to a curry house for spaghetti? Curry house specializes in yoshoku ryori, or "western inspired cooking." This western inspired cooking began to develop during the Meiji period, after centuries of isolation Japan finally opened up to world trade and modernization. Like many things, the Japanese took foreign influences and transformed them into something new and unique. Like the German inspired schnitzel we all know as Japanese katsu today. Unlike the traditional kaiseki ryori (the haute cuisine of Japan), these new dishes were easier to prepare and became common everyday food. Some other examples include croquettes, okonomyaki, cream stew, hamburger steak and curry. (curry came to Japan via Britain, not directly from India, hence it's association with western rather than Asian food).
Oh, and also some interesting spaghetti dishes come from Japan as well, and that is the purpose of my visit. I've had the curry dishes here before and I wasn't impressed. Wasn't bad, just OK. As many have said, you can easily make better at home. But the pasta..
The tarako and ika spaghetti was delicious, I devoured the buttery noodles laced with cod roe and squid, using some of my corn soup as an extra sauce. I provided my own furikake seasoning which just made this dish soar. The garlic bread was the perfect partner for the pasta and the soup. I know I was really hungry so my opinion may be skewed, but that dish was a keeper.
The kinoko... not so much. It wasn't bad (and I wasn't nearly as hungry when I ate it) This one the pasta was perfectly cooked, comes tossed in a soy sauce (tastes like lo mien) with some rubbery hon shimedji mushrooms, topped with grated daikon radish and daikon sprouts. It tasted ok, but I could not get past the rubbery mushrooms. I don't think the daikon/ sprouts added anything to the dish. Might be good for a vegetarian but once was enough for me.
Well there you have it, curry house is NOT an Indian restaurant, but rather a place for quick take out (or dine in) where one can try the delicious and unpretentious western style dishes from Japan.

uh.. does a bowl of rice and some curry have to be $10? when they are making so much at one time... maybe they have no choice, but i have to say torrance location was much much better!!
service was poor and my one star goes to the taste of the katsu (that was decent)
There is something wrong if this place is called curry house when they can't even get the curry right. Honestly, if I buy curry blocks and make it at home, it tastes better than their watered down, strangely sour, not-sweet-enough curry. Also, don't order the shrimp deluxe curry. It looks good, but that's about it. Seriously, this restaurant is all about presentation, and not about taste. The only thing that is good is the hamburg steak they use in the hamburg curry, but the sour curry, of course, gets in teh way. If only I could replicate their hamburg steak at home and use my own curry, that would be divine.
I went to Curry house about a year ago a little after they opened and remembered that I had a pretty good experience here so on Saturday, I stopped here for lunch.
I ordered the stone-pot beef curry lunch special and was pretty dissapointed. I ordered the "hot" flavor over the medium and mild and tasted no spicyness at all. Additionally the stone pot was way too hot and near the end of my meal, it burnt and hardened all of my remaining rice.
It is worth mentioning that our waitress was extremely friendly and the inside of the place was very clean and the decor was very reminiscent of a restaurant you'd find in Japan.
Due to my prior experience in which I ordered the pork katsu curry (which was delicious), I'm going to give this place 3 stars for now and come back again.
The food is very good and the portions will not leave you hungry. I have thoroughly enjoyed this restaurant every time I have gone. I think four stars is appropriate though, as the prices are a bit more expensive than the competitors, and the parking lot is a nightmare.

I thought my tolerance for spiciness was really high..sot I took a big bite of one of the dried peppers in the curry. NOT A GOOD IDEA! I was suffering for the rest of the meal.
Besides that, the curry was tasty but a little too watery. I like curry to be chock-full of stuff, so that every spoonful is filled with goodies (potatoes, seafood, chicken, whatever).
The place is clean though. AND, it's right next to Redberry..yay for dessert.

The food here constantly tastes the same every time i go, which is a good thing. However, they get 3 stars because they're service is not always so good. For example, we had a group of 8 today for a late lunch and they forget to make someone's katsu curry until AFTER we asked where it was, since it was missing (this was after they confirmed our order like 2-3times). They tried to play it off with the "oh it's coming" but we knew better, since some of us are experienced waitresses. We then asked her, "did you guys just start making it now after we asked where it was?" and she replied "uh uhmmm yeah". I understand sometimes mistakes are made, but don't approach the problem by trying to lie! Be honest and apologize.
My Big and I planned on getting brunch at The Original Pancake House before my rehearsal on Saturday morning, but when we drove by the restaurant and saw the mobs of people hanging out by the door waiting for tables, we knew that there was no way we were going to be able to eat there and get me back to campus for rehearsals in time.
So, she went through a mental list of other restaurants in the area where we could grab an early lunch and decided on Curry House.
I heard "curry," and thought, "Awesome! I love curry!"
However, when our car pulled up in front of the restaurant, I was bewildered by the sign on the restaurant that read, "Japanese Curry and Spaghetti."
"Curry and Spaghetti?!?!" I exclaimed, "That sounds like a pretty weird combination!"
"Not only is it Curry and Spaghetti," my Big replied excitedly, "it's JAPANESE Curry and Spaghetti!"
I didn't realize why the curry being JAPANESE made a difference until I saw the menus.
We arrived about five minutes before the restaurant was set to open, and there were already four or five couples/families waiting eagerly by the door to get in - I took that as a good sign that the curry and spaghetti at Curry House must have been pretty great or else people probably would not have arrived early and waited for the restaurant to open just to eat there!
Once the doors to the restaurant opened, we were immediately seated by a friendly man who spoke with a subtle Japanese accent (it was another good sign that we were getting AUTHENTIC Japanese curry here!) and our waiter came to take our orders soon afterwards.
The couples and families sitting around us were all speaking in Japanese, too.
I loved the colorful English/Japanese menus with all the small pictures of the different dishes - it reminded me of all the decades-old menus from Japan that my Japanese teacher had us use during skits in Japanese class.
"Karee raisu," or "Curry Rice" was ALWAYS in any restaurant/food-related skit we did in class, but I never realized that it was a special Japanese dish until I started looking at all the different "karee raisu" options on the menu at Curry House.
As intriguing as the curry and spaghetti combination sounded, it didn't sound appealing enough for me to order (what would happen to the curry sauce?? Spaghetti can't soak it up like rice can!), so I went with a safe choice - Vegetable Curry with rice, medium.
The food arrived quickly and I liked how my curry came in a cute little side bowl separate from the rice, so I could control how much curry I wanted to pour on top of my huge plate of rice.
I thought that my "medium" curry had no heat at all, but I liked the savory/sweetness of the curry a lot though - next time I think I am going to go for the spicy.
Even though I enjoyed my "karee raisu" at Curry House, it wasn't a particularly spectacular meal that would have been memorable had it not been for the fact that it was my first time eating "karee raisu" after talking about it in skits for Japanese class so many times before. I walked away from the restaurant kind of feeling like I could have made the same curry and rice at home from a boxed mix for a lot less money.
If I were rating the food alone, Curry House would get three stars, but the clean and modern decor or the restaurant, the cute menus, and the super friendly and attentive wait staff (my water glass was never empty!) gets them an extra star.
Honestly, I don't know whats the difference between regular curry and Japanese curry. They both taste the same to me. Whenever i come here, I always ordered the vegetable curry plate. It's actually pretty decent and the portion was a lot, but then again I never finish my food and always have leftovers.
The price was decent and there were quite a few selection on the menu. The food was mediocre, but service was pretty decent. However It's not a place i'll get a craving every now and then.
Asian fusion from an Asian's perspective.
I had the heart attack hamburger katsu (deep fried hamburger patty over rice and Japanese brown curry) which came with a miso soup or house salad. The brown curry sauce was just brown. I would've like veggies, potatoes, carrots, etc mixed in. Otherwise, it is just as you expect.
The waitress was very nice, cheerful, and helpful.
I felt like this was more of a family restaurant and it's pretty expensive for what you're getting.
I'll stick with the authentic and cheap Asian foods next time.

This is just some normal Japanese curry that is a tad overpriced. Nothing special about the quality of their curry, but their chicken ginger spicy curry was pretty good, and had quite a kick to it. I got a whopping 4 chunks of chicken along with a whole lot of curry sauce with my garlic rice. I took the leftover home because since I got a lack of chicken, I'll just cook chicken at home and mix it with the remaining curry for another meal.
Two funny points:
1) We got six Curry House dollars at the end of the meal to be redeemed for a future visit. Our waiter said we could use as many of them as we wanted during our next visit. So does that mean if I get a $2.95 green tea ice cream and use $6 Curry House dollars, do they owe me like $3? =P
2) The chicken garlic spicy curry has 3 chilis to represent the level of spiciness. It's the only entree on the menu that has 3 chilis. When I asked them if I could decrease the spiciness for this dish, they said "no" because it comes in a package. Nice.....

First time I went here with my roomates, I wasn't sure what to expect. It is Japanese style curry, however, their curry's hot/ spicy level is not true to the terms of "mild, medium, or hot." Their medium is alittle on the mild side, so if you like spicy hot curry, go for either the hot or actually more along the lines of extra hot, which comes with a hot oil sauce. They have spaghetti as a subsitute for the rice, which is good. The portions are a good size and usually leaves me feeling full. However, my cousin ordered the extra large plate of my chicken katsu. When we compared his to mines, we couldn't realy tell the difference, just more rice and curry, but he wanted more katsu too lol ( but not a big deal). A PLUS is that every second tuesday of the month, they have $5 curry plates, so if you are ever on a budget, its a good place to go. It gets pretty crowded on that day, so plan accordingly. Also they are right next to Red Berry Froyo, so if u want some dessert afterwards, it's just a short trip next door and you are all set. In summary, I would recommend Curry House for an occasional meal or to try something new.
I was underwhelmed. The curry was flavorful but it really didn't taste any different from curry you can make at home from the box. The waiters and waitresses were pleasant enough, but the service wasn't anything special... the decor was tasteful and clean but simple. The food was tasty but really unremarkable. Just sort of there... not really standout.
Curry House gets stars for their colorful pictorial menu, as well as for being fast and friendly. The prices are cheap too. On the day that I went, the rice wasn't ready so we had to get the curry on the spaghetti, which was a nice choice because I haven't had too many experiences with Japanese-Italian cuisine.
I don't think the curry was spectacular, but it wasn't bad either. It's hard to tell how different Curry House's curry was from the boxed curry you can make by yourself. There are many curries to choose from....the basic curries have a little bit of meat, no potatoes and have a subtle sweetness to them. Not bad, but not phenomenal. (I'm not too sure if you can get "phenomenal" curry.)
I really liked the chile shrimp, spinach spaghetti! The sauce was yummy---a tasty chile flavor, but it was gentle enough to complement the whole meal.
Overall the meal wasn't bad. Cheap, filling and I really liked the staff at Curry House. They're very polite and very nice. I think it's cute how they give little "Curry House Dollars" at the end of the the meal with your bill. You can use them again for your next meal at Curry House. (However as stated on each Curry House Dollar, you cannot use the Curry House Dollars for your tip.) Ha ha. Very cute.

I love Japanese style curry and have heard about the Curry House chain, so I was eager to try this place out. The decor is clean and modern, prices are decent and service was good.
I ordered the chicken curry and I was a bit disappointed. It was sweet, thick ,mild and flavorful, but it was lukewarm. The corn potage soup had a nice flavor, was also lukewarm. I wasn't sure if this was the norm since I have never been to the LA/OC Curry Houses. Maybe it was just an off day and the stove was not working? Perhaps the workers were hurried? Or maybe my tongue fell off at some point and I just didn't notice! Not sure what it was.
Guess I'll give it a try one more time...

I love Curry House just for being the only place in San Diego (from what I know) that exclusively serves japanese curry as their main attraction. I love curry in all forms, especially japanese curry. I used to order the usual chicken katsu curry when I come here with the spice being hot. I haven't noticed no real difference in the levels of spicyness but it's probably because I gobble it all up within 3 minutes. The staff here are always friendly and the decor is simple and clean.
You usually get a side salad whenever you order your curry. I'm usually hesitant with things like this because it's usually the typical iceberg lettuce/napa cabbage/drenched in a blah sauce. But this isn't the case here. It's like a mix of peas/green beans/corn/pinto beans/tomatoes...in other words, a step up to the repetitiveness of your usual salad.
The only bad experience I had here was when I ordered the stone grilled curry rice. The curry sauce didn't mix too well and alot of the rice was burnt. The server asked if I'd like her to mix it all together. I politely declined and regretted it because she probably could've done alot better then I did. I didn't know what I was doing so I ruined my own meal.
If your new to curry, just get the katsu curry with rice. I've never eaten it with the spaghetti so I can't comment on that. Overall, I would recommend it to anyone and even if you have friends who don't like curry, just tell them to order the usual chicken teriyaki. They have it here too =).

Wow! I didn't expect Curry House to be such a cool place to eat. I give them a big thumbs-up for their clean, contemporary design and unique, interesting menu.
Somebody once said to me that one way to tell if a certain foreign-cuisine restaurant is good is if the locals go there. In this case, most of the diners at Curry House were Japanese - so the food must be good.
As the name suggests, curry is the specialty of this restaurant. But they serve spaghetti as well. I opted to get the tarako and ika dish - spaghetti with squid and cod roe. The pasta was cooked al dente and the roe lent the dish a little crunchy-crunch, although I would've preferred the squid to be a little bit "tougher" or chewier.
I promised the waiter that I'll order something for dessert. Too bad they've run out of tofu cheesecake - I would've loved to try that. I guess that's one more reason to go back to Curry House!

Curry alone is hard to do, but they are doing it well, the normal franchises taste. I ordered Katus curry and it was great.
It's pretty good, if you like curry. The selection is big and they come up with new stuff quite often. That parking lot (Nijiya, Shanghai & Sunrise) has potential, if you wanna open an Asian rest. go there, the a place just opened up.

I tried the beef curry and the fried shrimp curry. The beef curry was okay, but it's nothing special. The shrimp curry came with spicy omelet rice that didn't go well with the curry. My mouth was burning after awhile, since I'm not that great with spicy food. Corn soup on the side was lukewarm and bland, which was disappointing.
On a brighter note, Curry House serves better curry than what my (100% Japanese) mom makes. She makes the worst curry ever by adding some "special ingredients" (something like apples, cinnamon, other spices?) that make the curry taste horrible! Once, leftover okra and fish were floating around as well. Compared to that, Curry House is awesome:)

It's the 3rd or 4th time I've been to this particular Curry House... The food here is pretty savory, I always ask for the curry "hot" and can't tell any difference between the hot or mild which bums me out. It's definitely clean and well kept, the staff is super friendly, it's pretty inexpensive, they can accommodate large groups and they have pitchers of beer. As long as you're not going expecting to get blown away by the fantastic cuisine, it's a great standby lunch place.
It feels like a restaurant you'd find in a mall in Japan.

I tried Curry House last night with some friends that frequent it as much as one a week. They have been raving about it for a while now and I was excited to get a chance to try it.
The location used to be a restaurant supply store that was next door to Shanghai City near Nijiya Japanese Market. The interior looks like they spent a small fortune on the TI. Nicely done. There is a fish take with a few clown fish and one blue one. (I know nothing about fish tanks, but we were joking about the fish being Nemo and Dory.
I ordered the Chicken Katsu Curry (Spicy). The chicken was moist and flavorful. The curry was a bit on the sweet side, but I guess that's typical of Japanese curries. I was hoping for it to be a bit more spicy. I do love the spicy stuff.
I grabbed one of the dinner menus and scanned it to add to this post.

I love this place because I love Japanese style curry and spaghetti and it reminds me of home...I used to go to Curry House all the time with my family in Torrance.
I actually like the Japanese Style Spaghetti. It is not as powerful in flavor as the curry, but I love the subtleness of the soy sauce and vegetables. I would not recommend having some curry then trying the spaghetti...it will taste like nothing.
The curry is Japanese style, like the kind you make out of those blocks...and I love it that way.
I also was impressed with their corn potage, which I have never tried before. Mmm corn soup.
