i've been passing this place by without a second thought for 2 years. those days are over!
i used to… Read more »
This place is under new management and has gone from a dark and mysterious place that is never open into a yummy, inexpensive place to get brunch all day. They also make very good pastries and pies.
edit* they closed for a long time and re-opened again and although they made the place prettier, it kind of fell off of our radar. And now it seems to be no more healthy than sunset diner.
It's still good, cheap and fast, just don't expect any nutritional value whatsoever.
their hours have finally normalized (ie, they are open when you expect a cafe to be open!). they have renovated, and while the place is MUCH better, it still seems like a work in progress. i look forward to joe's getting better.
The last 4 times I've been by here they have actually been open!!!
4 stars for that!
Seriously the other 20 times I'd come by they would be closed. At like 3:30 in the afternoon.
So they are going to lose a star for the random hours, because if I find myself all the way over here and I can't get my coffee, I feel like going Kung Foo on a bitch. There is no where else to turn but the diner, a bodega or McD's if this place is closed.
But I think I am catching on to their system.
- Every other Wednesday and fourth day in the month they probably won't open.
-Every other Thursday and Friday they may be open for a half hour, one hour tops in the 11-2pm range.
-Saturdays and Sundays, call ahead. They may be at a BBQ at the beach or across the street at the park or something.
-Monday and Tuesdays they'll be open till 3:35 (well maybe 2:30 if it's a nice day).
*Not a bad idea to knock on the window even if the closed sign is turned around. I've detected some activity and a mellow vibe floating out from the cracks under the door.
Seriously, seriously...this place is cozy. The coffee is good, but what do i know, I'll drink that bodega crap.
But the vibe, man, is alright.

Decent coffee, good BLT on a bagel, and the owner serves you. Nothing to write home about, but I'll take this over Starbucks any day.
And until Grumpy serves yummy sandwiches, this is where I go when I want coffee and a little something else.
This place used to be never be open. And then, it's be open from say 6 to 8 on a Thursday and then on Sunday morning. You'd walk in and there'd be no food back there, one table has a register and the other has a turntable, stack of records, and boomin' sound system cranking either hardcore rap or slow jamz. There was no menu but whatever you asked for, the dudes (who were either really high or totally loved making sandwiches and meeting people) could usually make something LIKE what what you wanted. It was pretty good, and you left feeling like you hadn't been to a store but rather to somebody's crib. However, it was never open when you wanted it to be.
The new joint has cleaned the place up, has a menu, food on display, damn fine coffee, bagels from Bagelsmith on N7th, and they are open when you want them to be. I honestly think they deserve a ticker tape parade around McGolrick Park for doing what they do. I'm so happy this place is reliably open. God bless you brave coffee and bagel soldiers!
You would think a place with a name like "Cup of Joe's" would have delish coffee. Sadly, the coffee is below average. The hours of this place are bizarre.
I do like how the place is set up. The sandwiches are very good and the people that work here are nice.

New owners have made a difference. Hours of operation are more consistent. Not sure why they weren't open this past weekend. Hope all is well.
Oh, and the mini-blueberry pies are amazing.
When I first moved to the neighborhood, I thought this cafe was closed. At least it was never open when I walked past. Turns out that their hours aren't necessarily irregular -- although they can close for weeks at a time -- it's just that they concentrate on the front end of the day, not the back. And they don't seem to be open much on weekends.
Located in the former location of Ida's Sweet Shop (and apparently once called the Rinaldi Coffee Shop), the cafe sports a handful of tables and a very small grill and kitchen area. They post signs when the grill is on, but when it's not, they serve the simplest of fare: bagels and such. Then there's the coffee and tea.
The coffee is self-serve, contained in those pump carafe things. Just grab a paper cup, push down on the lever, and pay at the counter. A medium cup to go will set you back $1.25.
While there are occasionally people hanging out in the cafe, eating at a table or reading the newspaper, this coffee shop strikes me much more as the kind of place you grab and go. I wish it were between me and the subway -- instead of a block-plus in the opposite direction! That's just enough distance that I'm not a regular.
Otherwise, it looks cozy and comfortable.

Boy, if only this place... opened... occasionally. Cup of Joe's is wonderful, has great food and people, and is a fun place to sit. Except that they close at 4:30. And there's only three tables. And half the time the grill isn't on.
I can't insult it though, because it's such a nice place to hang out. But dudes, come on -- get some tables and hours!

This place cracks me up. It's never open, the staff doesn't give a shit or know how to make anything (i.e. chais and cappuccinos) and no one complains cause there really is a cool vibe once you're situated inside with your cup of whatever and a newspaper.
I dig the kitschy furniture and random piles of stuff, and I'm not being facetious. Their bagels are good, too. The coffee is ok.

Again...back to the wonky hours? Whats with everyone that owns that place? In the 9 years I have lived on this block, there has been a zillion different things in this spot. Why can't someone just make it work? There is nothing else around for SEVERAL block, its a captive audience! I really like the coffee here and would love to drink it on a regular, timely basis. The sandwiches are good and the staff is friendly. However, PLEASE ditch the TV. I hate it when coffeeshops/delis have TVs in them, just kills the vibe. ..::| Rant over.

Yay!
The place is now under new ownership and is now open late (sometimes until 10pm) and now they… Read more »
I'm a real big fan of their iced coffee. It's not overpowering but strong enough to do what you want coffee to do. I love their breakfast sandwiches too. I usually end up poppin' in towards the early afternoon and haveta get my sandwich on whatever bagel is left standing from the morning. Which has been great, I've never gotten egg & cheese sandwiches on everything bagels before (I usually play it safe with a plain or wheat). The dudes who run it are super cool as well and always have good music playing. As everyone else though, I wish they'd keep a steady schedule of when they are and aren't open! It's such a nice spot to have around the corner from my house, but it'd be nicer to know when I can definitely stop in for coffee!
Not bad. Cheap coffee that tastes slightly burnt, but it's actually a decent cup. For $1.50, what else can you expect? This place is kind of half-asses it, but that's kind of what makes it so special. I'd rather have it in my little neighborhood on the park than Dunkin Donuts or Starbucks.

Previously infuriated by the wack-assed hours of this place, I am completely stoked about the change of ownership. I will gladly pay more money for a damn fine sandwich and a perfectly balanced iced coffee, especially if I can rely on said items being available to me between the hours of 7am and 7pm daily (the new guy hedged a little saying "You know, sometimes we'll close at 6:30." OMG dude, as long as you're open every morning, I'm not gonna begrudge you that last half hour!). Those who were put off by high prices should take note of the handwritten sign in the window announcing a price cut in the bagels (I think down to $1.50). But for real, you get what you pay for here: fresh and yummy, they make good use of fantastic ingredients. The Philly cheesesteak is ridonkulous, just as delicious as the real deal, but made of waaaay better quality meat. Home-made baked goodies are also delightful. The folks running it do have a touch of the busy-body (a little overly attentive), but in a Mom and Dad kind of way--because they obviously care a lot and want to make sure you're getting the best. I'd take that over apathetic stoners selling cheap bagels and so-so coffee any day!
