Best Cafe Latte in SF.
Just happened to be staying across the street and was freezing so I decided to come here for a nice warm pick me up.
Ask and thou shalt receive I was super satisfied!
Staff is really nice and gentle which was is super good if you are just NOT a morning person (like myself). -
Review from Erin S.
This is what a coffee house should be...a place to get coffee or beer, depending on your mood. Most coffee houses in Europe get this, why not here in SF?
We opted for beer since it was 5 o'clock on a Friday. They had a good selection of old standbys & a few craft beers. I tried a Humboldt Brown, which was a nice, dark ale. And get this...$1.95 for a pint. I think that's the cheapest beer HH in SF. I'm pretty sure it's cheaper to drink beer at Cup a Joe's than it is to drink at home.
As long as you don't mind the tables full of mellow students on their laptops rather than a lively bar scene, this is the place to be for a beer with friends in Lower Nob Hill.Listed in: Beeeeeeer!, Happy Hour

Review from James L.
Excellent coffees and teas (I generally hate coffee but the mocha I tried here was pretty excellent), pretty good paninis (though filled with too much cheap cheese), and standoffish service. Mexican Coke available as well, which is a nice touch. Good pastries: nothing that stands out as a must-try but all solid eating.
Altogether it evens out to an "average" rating. I'd probably rate this place four stars if I was an avid coffee drinker/wireless user, but as I'm not the paninis and the service matter more to me. -

This place has a great atmosphere and I feel like that's often half of what I'm looking for with a coffee place. Free Wifi. Good drinks.

A very nice little self service cafe, with a very friendly, even hearty staff, frequented by people living round the corner. May be, you will not realize it's worth, only by passing and looking inside. But if you once have tasted its offerings and atmosphere, you will come back. I preferred toasted cheese + croissant ( very good quality!), capuccino and of course fresh water every morning, sitting on chairs in the sun outside the cafe and doing people watching or speaking easily with other guests. Many greetings to the staff and thank you so much for the time having spent in your cafe.

Looking for a neighbourhood cafe to park with your Macbook? You will fit right in at Cup A Joe!
This is the place to head for free wifi and a side of beer or coffee...and food too. When your a tight-arse backpacker in SF happy Hour beer specials, free wifi and a cool cafe is a dream come true!
This joint is friendly and almost encourages you to linger. Its great for people watching. The staff are friendly and its all good value....
However, its almost TOO cool. Its as if it's time as a secret local gem has ended and now its flooded by "hipsters" vying for a table to perch at, however the real cutting edge hipsters have moved on to the next new thing. Don't get me wrong though it is a great place to head for a cheeky pint, a good brew, or to update your FB status! -

4 stars for the coffee, and for the discount if you bring your own mug. I work nearby and its the best of 2 shops within a 2 block radius. I can't speak to the food or pastries since I haven't tried them, but I don't think you can go wrong with a cheap happy hour. And what's better than a place that serves beer and coffee?

To sum it up: Don't hire douchebags
Returnability: Never
Superstar Factor: On the superstar scale, this coffeeshop is the coffeeshop equivalent to a man who says he is an actor, but really works as shoe salesman and wears stained wifebeaters over his potbelly. Did I mention he likes to yell a lot?
My brother who lives in the South Bay and father from overseas were waiting for me across the street from my building. We were texting as he waited so I could give him my eta. An employee, I believe he is a manager, came out and very rudely told him to get away and stop stealing the wifi. When my brother explained that he was just texting me to try to know how soon I would be downstairs the employee accused him of lying and forced him and my poor old father to move away from the shop all the way up to the garage next door. Based on the courtesy, or lack thereof, shown to my family I will never step through the door of this coffeeshop again (I have been) though I live across the street. -
Review from Amanda F.
I want to hate this place so badly.
I have a sneaky suspicion that it's cool.
I don't want to be cool.
I want to be ironic.
I want to frequent a coffee shop that's NOT COOL.
I feel like that's cooler.
It's a block from my apartment, which means it's a block too far to be my morning-coffee-stumble-spot.
It's cash only, and Lord knows I spend all my cash on candy and taxi cabs.
Hipster students consistently park themselves in prime locations (outside, when it's sunny; inside, by the outlets, when it's not) and they will not be moved for love or money.
But anytime I don't want coffee, I'm usually amenable to beer, and this place sells both.
BOTH, I TELL YOU!!!
And they sell my favorite triangular-shaped massive oaty bars.
And, this one time, the barista saw I was struggling and gave me a bagel for free.
So cool. -

Pretty hip coffee shop located in "tender nob". Staff always friendly and lot's of people in the hood that drop in for a cup a joe. The Illy coffee is strong and smooth- nice enough to start your day!
I usually just get a cup of coffee (ice/hot), but on one hot day I ventured and tried the mango ice tea... tad on the weaker side & it was already pre-mixed and ready to go- Hmm, but overall the drinks are good.
Great place to people watch or just to hang out.
Next door is the gypsy palm reader... Just FYI. -

I like this place and I go regularly. There are only two problems that knock it down to four stars. First, the sliding windows do nothing to stop the cigarette smoke from coming inside. The stench can be overwhelming sometimes, and the employees don't do anything about it. Second, inside seating can be scant during certain times of day, so you may find that you need to go elsewhere.

Before heading out to Napa Valley, my Punjabi boo brought me to his favorite place to get coffee when he used to live in SF.
This place is LEGIT! The coffee, the pastries, EVERYTHING! OMG! You must have the pumpkin chocolate chip cake. It is to die for.

I live across the street from this place and find myself going there for a lox and cream cheese (add tomato, onion and capers) breakfast sandwich a couple times a week. I especially love how the one cook always asks customers if they'd like salt and pepper- it's a nice touch.
When my boyfriend and I went in to eat they plated it so that all of the ingredients were separated and you build the sandwich yourself- awesome because I love tons of cream cheese and onions, so I was glad to make it the way I like it. They also give you a ton of everything- I could even use up all of the cream cheese- which is rare for me.
Unfortunately my boyfriend's sandwich looked much less spectacular. A little on the blander side, especially compared to my giant plate loaded with goodies. They also don't have bacon or sausage or anything like that- kind of weird for a place that pretty much only serves breakfast food. They also have paninis, but I haven't tried one yet- I can't help myself- the lox and cream cheese is just too irresistible to me -

Although I'm not a regular, I don't necessarily feel like that should warrant you (the employee) to give me dirty looks, or to just kinda ignore me when I'm waiting there. I understand that talking to some random girl is important, but I suppose a paying customer seems more important than some girl that is just flirting with you to get a free cup of coffee. Oh, by the way...she doesn't like you...she just wants free coffee.
Also, I think it's lame when it takes them forever to make a panini. Guess what, my grandma has a panini maker and it doesn't take that long. Care to know why it is a 15-20 minute wait? Well, the first time the girl forgot and was rather rude about it. The conversation went [her] "Uhm, I forgot about you panini. It's gonna be a bit longer." [me] "Oh. Ok. Well, do you know how much longer?" [her] "I don't know how long they take. Just sit down there and I'll call you when it's ready." The second time it took a while was when the girl was talking to her co-worker, then running back because she forgot to check on it, then left to talk to people, then ran back again because she forgot a second time, then after 15-minutes came up to me and said "Hey...I forgot to plug in the machine. So it's gonna be a while." and then walked away before I could say anything.
I'm gonna pass on going here, because there's a ton of other places that I can go to that are much nicer.Listed in: Hanging in my hood - the…

San Francisco, CA
You would think that in a neighborhood dominated by art school students that the coffee shops would be pretentious and super elite (OH, its the Academy of Art University, nevermind).
I really try to support places like this. Open late, small but not too small, maybe offering a happy hour, it sounds like an ideal SF spot.
But somehow, the coffee quality has continued to decline. The lattes end up being watery and overpriced, and I keep telling myself "It'll be better next time".
If you're out for cheap draft beer, go right ahead. If you're looking for good coffee though, keep walking and get something worth your money.
Atmosphere: Close-quarters, ATM smashed between two tables.
Cost: Average
Try: A ridiculously long happy hour, 2-10pm

Great little coffee shop. We were staying close by and loved this place for breakfast. It is a continental style choices vs. Han's or Golden Coffee. The happy hour is just $1.95 for pint of beer.

San Francisco, CA
The $1.95 Beer sign drew me in like a little beacon from heaven. Wait, is it sacrilegious to use "beer" and "heaven" in the same sentence? ((shrug)) Ahh whatever, I don't go to church anymore. Which means I can pretty much do and say whatever the fuck I want, and just blame it on ignorance.
My cousin Griselda D. and I opted for the 21st Amendment Watermelon Wheat beer. Mostly because it sounded fancy. And also because I very much enjoy eating watermelon. I slapped down my $2 and took a seat just near the open window. They have outdoor seating so at the table just outside the window, a faux-hawked art student smoked 1/2 a pack of cigarettes, and all his smoke billowed in from the outside. And mind you, the "window" is the size of a sliding glass door. So ALL that shit blew right in and made my otherwise delicious beer taste like ass. If I were a big, scary burly dude I woulda gone outside and been like "This ain't Europe, asshole! Take that shit around the corner!"
Aside from that, I have to give the place 4 stars because of the cheap beer, obviously. But also because the folks behind the counter were really nice, AND it's a great place for people watching - dopers, hookers and all. Gotta love the T.L.
I'll have to go for my favorite brew, Blue Moon, next time. I wonder if they'll put the fancy orange slice in it. I'm thinking, no. -

San Francisco, CA
Theoretically, Jopa (as I call it) should be the perfect hangout. They have decent coffee, sandwiches, fast internet, a friendly rotating cast of employees and unrealistically cheap beer. Still, Jopa has a few minor flaws that have worn on me over the years:
1)The art students. Their conversations are SO clever and SO interesting that they are spoken intentionally loud so that everyone can hear how creative and unique they are. This is distracting.
2)Their new bathroom is too fancy. There are three, ten foot murals which have more urban flare than my explosive diarrhea. I guess art students like poo-pooing to banksy.
3)They covered up my favorite people-watching window with an enormous "beer special, $1.95 a pint" sign. Consequently, the place has become populated with more art students, whom I hate.
Don't get me wrong, Jopa is fine. The best spot in the immediate area. In fact, I'll probably spend another seven hundred hours there next year... but man, I'm sick of art students, prancing around with their "knight kash," gentrifying my already gentrified neighborhood.
Jopa, decent. Crowd, bad. -

Cup A Joe is my home base. At first this was strictly based on location. My husband and I just moved to SF and love having a close to the apartment coffee shop. This is a bingo.
I go each morning and order an iced coffee then sit down and work. As I have started to become more of a regular I have been incredibly satisfied with this coffee joint.
The staff is very friendly. They are just cool people that do their jobs well. While I have come to chat with a few of the guys regularly, they are not like these over the top chatty types. They're just super fast and pleasant.
The product is always good. Whether it is coffee or a nosh, everything I have had to eat or drink has been above par.
I love that there is always a seat available. Sometimes the inside tables are taken but usually you can find a good spot outside.
You cannot beat the happy hour. Good beers on tap and outstanding prices. All of the prices are very fair.
The only reason why I cannot give the place an extra star is because they do not have wine and you cannot sit outside with your drinks. The latter may change soon.
Be sure to check out Cup A Joe. Especially if you need a place to write or work. It is mellow and comfortable with good people, products, and prices. -

I had walked by this place several times a week for the last few months, and not once had I noticed it. I stand right in front of it waiting for my school shuttle to pick me up, and feel like I had been looking at the place without actually seeing it. Then one day-- BAM! I saw the sign for $1.95 Happy Hour, and it was like a shining light from heaven for this poor grad student.
The best part is that they have my favorite beer (Blue Moon) on tap. So literally, this may become my new favorite place. I haven't had any food or coffee yet, but I plan to soon! -

For you drunk lushes out there, happy hour is $1.50 a pint of Blue Moon and Anchor from 3 p.m.-10 p.m. Let me get that out there now so I can move onto why I like this place. First off, I don't drink so I can't comment on the alcohol but my friends insist that's why this place is suppose to be so great. I counter their binge drinking with mighty large cups of espresso loving made by a surly bald barista who's probably resentful of the fact that I actually make him make me coffee at a coffee house. I love the look he gives me when I order a venti soy mocha during happy hour. :D
I must be on a bit too much Joe as I write 'cause I can see this review not making sense whatsoever but that should be a testament to the power of the Joe. They don't make it beautiful like Blue Bottle Coffee and it's not super sweet like Starbucks-it's a Cup a Joe and there's nothing better than that.
The vantage point of the people watching is fantastic. It's situated right on the corner of Leavenworth and Sutter so you get to watch a lot of tourists walk around, get an abundant amount of sun shine in, and possibly network considering there's always at least 6 MacBooks out and open at any given moment. We were arguing about some new movie called "Sucker Punch" and all of a sudden, some kid that looked like Ben Stiller's love child turns and says, "are you talking about Sucker Punch?" Amazing. I love how great minds think alike.
Aside from the happy hour, extensive coffee menu, and small pastry offerings, this place offers carrot juices, organic treats and health food if you're into rabbit pellets as I call it. This is a wonderful understated part of the 'loin and I'd highly recommend it to anyone in need of a good cafe with a chill vibe.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Joe's is just like the rare, handsome guy who doesn't know he is good looking.
This has quickly become my favorite coffee / beer place of all times. It is non-pretentious, right around the corner from my house, and the service is also laid-back, efficient.
What is not to love about a place where you can spend a lazy afternoon drinking beers, eating sandwiches, surfing the net in jeans and sweats? -

While their coffee is alright and I do enjoy their cheap beer, the staff just kind of rubs me the wrong way. I have been living in this neighborhood for a while now and I love knowing my local businesses. The staff always just seems annoyed by the fact that they have to deal with customers. I understand that because you work in a coffee shop you are so very cool, but I would kind of like it if you didnt act like you were going out of your way to pour me a cup of coffee. I didnt even ask for an espresso which is much more work. After coming in here every day for ages, ordering the same thing, and the person behind the counter still not even showing a glint of recognition I got kind of annoyed. Meh it isn't bad, I just want better.

FYI, I wrote a review of this place a few months ago, and somehow it was removed recently, so beware when you read these that the stats on this place are totally skewed. (not kidding)
For coffee in the area, check out Sugar at Sutter and Taylor (awesome new cafe) or Cafe Bean, or the Morningside Cafe at Bush and Jones (free wifi). Also, there's a new cafe at Geary and Leavenworth (although I admit, I haven't been there yet).

Avoid. Had a bad experience here, when I ordered a sandwich and saw a cockroach run across the counter. Eeew.
The server quickly swatted the roach, she has great reactions.
Things didn't get better later when I ordered a latte , and it was made with the espresso that had been sitting there for 20 minutes! Nasty.
Don't even ask for an outlet, or you may face the verbal consequences.

Before Cup of Joe, I was a Bean Bag Cafe boozie, but then I found this little nook and feel in love.
Cheap beer on tap, chairs everywhere to sit (Can't do that at Bean Bag's happy hour kids) and humongous windows to mindlessly sit and watch the hustle of Sutter, read Baudelaire or just smoke a cig and enjoying living in San Francisco with a nice cup of Joe. -

Attention whiney pseudo beatnik coffee house snobs: don't go here!
No sofas? Whaaa.
No atmosphere? Whaaaaaa
High employee turnover: EH? I go here every day and staff seems to hang around longer than most places in this town. Maybe I should publish a "zine" and then I too can write long self-righteous diatribes that nobody reads.
This place has:
1.good strong coffee and coffee drinks
2.decent panini sammiches for a decent price
3. cheap pay computers AND wifi - not everyone who lives nearby can afford a new Powerbook. They have never, ever given me a hard time about parking at a table with a laptop.
4.cheap happy hours pints ($2.95!!!), which go very well with...
5.One of the best people watching spots in the whole damned city! There are something like seven bus lines, 8 Acadamy of Art College "dorms" (money making machines for Elisa Stephens) and all the other attractions that make up the Tenderknob within 4 blocks of this corner. It seems like everybody in this area passes this corner at least once a day.
The outside tables are great! I talk my Mission and Sunset district friends into coming here after work, usually through subterfuge (I just want to change clothes...), park them at Joe's for a quick pint while I "go inside my apartment to change", and they end up wanting to stay and return on future occasions. After happy hour, we walk down the hill to Hi-Tide for take out Vietnamese and more cheap drinks.
I've known Joe for 5 years (since I moved here) and the previous comments about him are dead on: he's the friendly face in the white t-shirt who's always a boost to my day. Anyone who wrote negative things about him: I don't believe you. Sorry if you have an axe to grind, but I judge people by how they treat me, not on innuendo. Joe is A number one in my book.
Don't like the owner or the Cafe? Go away. Thanks. -
Review from Tammy C.
Came here around 2pm to grab breakfast. They ran out almost every kind of bagel fillings (salmon shear, lox, and a bunch others, etc) except hummus and cream cheese. I decided to try hummus that I have never tried on a bagel. Maybe they figured it's not what I was looking for, they gave me like 2 big scopes of hummus which was pretty good. The bagel itself was only so so-- a bit dry.
Coffee was like 3000 degrees hot which was wonderful!! They also have wifi for those who want to avoid other real life socializing. Their website has a rule "Do not view materials that may offend those who can see your screen." However, the 2 Macs are actually facing the door directly so it really means don't view anything offensive.
Do like the windows that open up to the streets with more chairs and tables outside. Great place to grab a coffee and a book on a lazy weekend.
Service was really basic, almost standard chain shop feel.
They also carry a similar selection of gelato here!! Now that's a plus. Still prefer Dolce up the street for its ambiance... -

Underwhelming.
They refused an early Happy Hour for my friend who was celebrating his birthday. They could have scored some stars from me on that one, but they didn't.
Also, the bagels were small, and they just dumped a smaller clump of cream cheese on the plate.
It's like they had something better to do besides offer good service, except that they didn't. -

Located on a corner which is neither Tender nor Nob, Cup-A-Joe is too small to really be much more than a place for me to pop into and grab a cup on my way to elsewhere.
There is a free WiFi gank, so one would think that it would be an ideal spot to sit and while away the hours on Yelp... cough, I mean telecommuting to my job. Alas, the general pace of the coffee shop (pretty bizzy) is not conducive to concentration and the windows let in all the sunlight in the entire Bay Area causing both computer screen glare and general drowsiness. I had a hard time concentrating on my conversation with my coffee companion this morning, let alone being able to focus on Yelp... cough, I mean telecommuting.
They have a great selection of coffee beverages and gelato at Cup-A-Joe... I will keep that on my radar for the next time I walk by there on a pub crawl or something. Mmmm... Gelato. -
Review from Megan S.

I live two blocks away, so I end up going to this cafe a lot. It's decently large, with lots of tables and outlets. They recently set up a high table with lots of bar-like seating, which makes a great set up for their fantastic happy hour special ($1.95 draft beers - which can only be consumed indoors due to pending permit).
Most of the cafes around here are cash only as well, so that's not something to badger Joe over. Some of the employees are a bit brisk, but otherwise pretty friendly. They usually work one or two to a shift, so they keep pretty busy.
The free wifi is pretty fast - I guess you could say it's a good DSL connection. I got about 4 mbps down, .5 up and a 19ms ping. It can vary though, depending on how many people are here and what they're doing (ie: downloading movies or whatever).
As other reviewers have mentioned, the paninis are very good. I've had the turkey and the black forest ham and would choose the ham over the turkey any day.
*** If you go here for food, please be aware - NO ONE WASHES THEIR HANDS HERE. It is the reason why I gave them 3 stars instead of 5. It really bugs me when employees take your money at the register and then go make your food with no break in-between. They also received a questionable rating from the health dept - an 86/100, and I've heard rumors of them having sanitary issues. I hope they read these reviews and start instructing their employees to wash their hands more frequently, especially before making food. -

Why?
There are a dozen coffee shops within a few blocks of this place so why go here. The coffee is mediocre, (at best), the space is crowded and uncomfortable, and the manager is unpleasant. I went there with a group of friends and we moved a couple of chairs that, apparently, blocked access per fire ordinance, (I say this because there was still plenty of room to pass by so I can only assume that this was the reason). The manager gruffly said, "You can't do that", and started manhandling the chairs back to their original position. It was an overt ego trip since a simple explanation would have sufficed.
It pleases me that, considering all the times that we have NOT returned to this place as a result, we have probably cost the manager thousands of dollars. (My friends and I view caffeine as a health supplement.) -

It's tough for me to find a coffee shop near my house that isn't Starbucks. Met someone here for a coffee date a month ago and LOVED the coffee... not so much the company. I've been back a few times since and have now expanded my horizons to their gelato.
You had me at gelato.
My only complaint is that when you order coffee here (versus to-go) they put it in these really nice tall GLASSES.. they get waaay too hot. Not that big of a deal though. Love this place! -

I'm visiting the city and have a bunch of work to do so I was did a little Yelp search for a non-chain coffee shop with free wifi and came upon this place. It's small but delightful. There are a good number of tables and they serve sandwiches, coffees, beers and gelatto.
I got the biggest tuna melt ever. To be honest, it shouldn't have been called a tuna melt because the cheese was not melted, but it was awesome anyway and way too big to eat. I also had a cafe au lait and am now enjoying a beer.
From 4-8pm all 10 draft beers are just under $3 which is fantastic. I will be back the next two days while I'm still in town!
One word of warning: It's cash only. -
Review from Ileana S.
You can't go wrong with a cup of Ciao Bella Gelato on a super hot day.
A note on outdoor seating. Kind of sucks that the staff didn't think about this: If people are smoking outdoors and the coffeeshop windows are open, the smoke travels inside. It's like being back in Ann Arbor, Michigan and getting asked whether you want to sit in the smoking or non-smoking section. No difference. You still come out smelling like an ashtray.
A note on the staff: I came here twice during an hour block and was hoping that the same person was not behind the counter. Not friendly. No smile. No conversation. If you hate your job so much, do the coffeeshop a favor and just quit.
